Usually I am not this forthcoming with reviews, allowing the supplier or provider some room to make up, but this is probably my worst hotel experience in the last 10 years. The staff provides below average service, and even manage to watch you carry tons of baggage over multiple trips to the room which feels like an eternal walk from the parking without so much as offering a trolley or assistance. The rooms will probably be way too small for any party with more than 2 people, and for a family of 5, the rooms are painfully tiny, up to the point where you find yourself falling over your own baggage behind every corner because any form of usable space is non existent... To be blunt, this is the type of accommodation thag mkaes me wonder what classifies a building as a hotel as this will more aptly and probably more accurately be described as a hostel or high school dormatory... I would have rated the location higher being the waterfront, but the view is nothing more than a neighbouring roof... I really regret booking a stay here and want to encourage families looking for accommodation in the Waterfront region to search elsewhere if service, family and comfort has any importance to you.

Had a great time, courteous and attentive staff. Excellent breakfast. Could do better on the buffet. Stone throw from waterfront and red bus station. Walking distance of most amenities. Cozy little spa on first floor. Prompt room service, overall great stay. Would recommend it to friends and family.

Hotel is centrally located and has 3 buildings of rooms. Lobby is very small, basically front desk and a few chairs for 3 guests. It includes a water heater to make instant coffee, no coffee pods or ground coffee. I tried calling the hotel two days before arrival to make changes in my reservation since I could not do it on the app and after 4 calls, no one answered. Tried the following day and again no answer. I verified the phone number both with the app, google and another Protea property. Very disappointed. Rooms are good size, large sofa, very small desk and bathroom with both a shower and bathtub separate, but the sink is super small. No wash cloth (I may be used to US standards). Very small TV for the room size and only one electricity plug (SA Type M) for all devices in the room, located at the desk. No plugs next to nightstand. I understand that the standards call for at least one electric plug on each side of the bed, none here. Lacks ceiling light at hallway making the closet useless at night and only a door light close to the bed. Certainly this property is below the Marriott standards I am used to visiting.

A wonderful experience and all staff are very professional and friendly and eager to assist in making your stay as best as possible. The rooms are stunning and comfortable. There is a gym and spa at the hotel and the history of it being a prison before is so interesting. It is close to the V & A Waterfront with many activities for one to enjoy.

Very disappointed with my stay. Let me be clear, the reason I am giving it a two star and not a one star is solely because of the nice gentlemen who helped me when I checked in. The room was in the “second” building, on the 2nd floor, and we checked in during load shedding. Now load shedding is beyond the hotel’s control but no one told me that there was no power upon checkin (and therefore no working lift). When I went (with 3 heavy suitcases) to the lift and found it not working, I went back to reception to point this out and the lady behind the desk looked at me and simply said “You need to take the stairs”. No offer (from her) to get someone to help. The young man who checked me in immediately then offered to help and enlisted the help of his colleague also. Then came the room!! I do not believe this is worthy of the Marriott name. The room is small but that’s fine. What I was dumbfounded by is the fact that there is only 1 plug in the room which has a 3 plug, 2 plug and USB charging port. So if I have a phone, tablet, laptop, power bank, wireless earphones and smart watch, I cannot charge eveything at the same time - imagine the situation if there are two people staying in the room. To make it worse, the plug is by the entrance to the room (far away from the bed). We asked reception for an extension chord and they provided one within a few minutes. When the power came back on, I turned on the air conditioning and OMG…the noise!! It has a whirring sound that is so jarring and the higher the fan speed the worst the noise is. The breakfast was good (food wise) but the service is way below par. They ran out of plates, glasses and coffee cups (the restaurant wasn’t even full). We sat at an outside table that had just been vacated and the wait staff didn’t even bother to bring us cutlery and coffee cups (despite seeing us sit down). I had to ask the omelette chef for a plate to partake in the hot buffet (maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think that’s his job). So disappointing. I could not wait to leave the hotel. The hotel is within walking distance of the V&A Waterfront so location is optimal. I’m saddened to say that I would not stay here again.

It is a decent hotel next to Two Oceans Aquarium. The heater and hotwater worked perfectly for me who need warm room in the winter. The interior looks like a ship cabin, quite unique though. Completed with iron and hairdyer, perfect for me. The room is quite big and comfort, we also can use laundry service for the same day. I love the breakfast, and their coffee is so good, I ordered double espresso every morning to make me ready facing the day.

I stayed here during a conference because it was just going to be too crazy to drive to the venue during peak hour traffic. The staff is friendly and polite. I was fortunate to get a free room upgrade. The breakfast is good. WiFi was average in the rooms. It's better in the GSB. Close to the Waterfront and tourist attractions.

It's not ideal. There aren't any generators during loadshedding and plugs don't work when you have work to do. So disappointing. Restaurant is two buildings away and not a great menu for variety so best to just go to the waterfront a short walk away. Room is tiny

My Anyhoo's...I actually enjoyed the stay. The room is spacious, everything you need is at hand, Awesome location of course. It's not Halaal so that's definitely a downside. The historic feel adds to the ambiance...So...until next time...😉

Had dinner at the Stonebreakers Restaurant. For that calibre of eatery it was an underwhelming experience. The waiter was disorganized & forgot orders, brought wrong things to the table & got annoyed when we insisted on him getting our orders right. We ordered wine for the table & he just plonked it down without even pouring for anyone. Worst was when my steak was taken back to the kitchen so they could give me the proper side & when it came back I could swear it was reheated in the microwave. It was as dry as the Sahara. I've had better experiences than this. Sorely disappointed in the service here.

I'm puzzled how to review this hotel! The linens and towels were nice. But if they're worried about water, they should place the hand towels next to the sink and not the bath towels. The bathroom is enclosed by frosted glass, so if anyone is in there at night, it'll light up the rest of the room. There was ONE outlet in the room, far from the bed. A call to the desk got me an extension cord in just a few minutes. But asking at the desk for more shampoo/conditioner/body scrub (yes, one product) in the shower didn't get us a refill. The grounds are extensive, and there are three buildings: the restaurant is two buildings away from the main hotel. But the history of the buildings is intriguing. The breakfast buffet is ok. There's a short cut to the V & A Waterfront, the Aquarium, and The Shed (a wonderful place to shop for souvenirs), which are just a few minutes' walk away. So for this alone, I'd probably stay here again!

I always enjoy going to Protea by Marriott every time. If we ever go as a family to the Waterfront over a weekend or so, we always stay at this hotel. It is an incredible experience always going to the hotel. Would recommend. Location: It is close to the waterfront, and you can easily walk to Victoria and Alfred. The hotel seems to be sharing a campus with the University of Cape Town. Rooms: My favorite room is the one where there are two bedrooms and a wall dividing the two. It is perfect for families going to visit. However, rooms are not soundproof. Staff: Staff are always friendly. Restaurant: The restaurant is in a separate building and totally worth the visit. We had an excellent breakfast. Spa: There is a cozy little spa located on the first floor.

    1. The en-suite offers no privacy to bedroom as it's all glass. 2. No shower door meant we had to use towels on the floor. 3. The dining room and bar is a block away from our hotel building. Ie. 2 buildings away. 4. We booked 2 rooms, one for my wife and I, one for our 3 kids. The rooms were located on 2 separate floors of the hotel at opposite ends of the building. 5. I personally found the hotel over-priced for what was on offer. 6. The rooms were nice and clean though. 👍

"An extremely high-end backpackers by the Marriott with good proximity to waterfront" 🖋️CONTEXT: I'm currently staying in one of their rooms on 26 NOV 2023, booked for 7 days. I am dreading the next 6 days. I've given it 2 STARS (as I couldn't bear a 1 STAR due to its location). Apologies for using my alt account as this is South Africa, and I don't want any unintended consequences for my review. 🖋️SUMMARY: I'd be harsh and say Marriott's Protea Waterfront is suitable for upmarket backpackers. Based on the rooms alone, you wouldn't think it's a 3 star hotel. I've noted very small rooms even with a 'larger room' ordered, they've made bad decisions with furnishing their rooms (yes I understand the 'historical' narrative): 🤣Only ONE outlet near the entrance (far from bed) 🙄A very small desk 😳Almost no space to place your luggage handcarry must go on the floor/chaise lounge/small coffee table 😭Frosted glass to bathroom gives the illusion of a less confined space but lights up the entire room inconveniencing anyone else in the night 🤕Disproportionately large chaise lounge + coffee table combo guarantees you'll be knocking your shins. 🫠Aircon DOES NOT do cool 17 deg (as set on thermostat), really more like 21 deg... 🤔But seriously this is the least of its problems. 🙃LONG VERSION: MOST OF THE POINTS I'VE RAISED HERE OTHERS IN THE COMMENTS HAVE ALREADY POINTED OUT, SO I AM CERTAINLY NOT THE FIRST NOTICING THEM (MAKES ME FEEL NOT SO BAD TALKING ABOUT IT): 😵‍💫1) SMALL FOR A "LARGER ROOM" AND DISPROPORTIONATE FURNISHING MAKES IT LESS SPACIOUS: Ordered a 'LARGER ROOM' but a disproportionately LARGE chaise lounge occupies too much space there's hardly any room left to walk - this chaise lounge is conveniently paired with coffee table low enough for you to knock your shins into (due to the lack of space for luggage, handcarry etc). HURRAY! You can now walk within limited confines of an already small room and hit your shins while doing so EVERYTIME you walk in/out of your room. 😵‍💫2) YES, IT'S TRUE, THERE'S ONLY ONE SINGLE OUTLET FOR THE ROOM: and YES, it is located near the entrance, AS FAR from the bed as possible. So yes, I am NOT charging my devices using the outlet, I'm doing it via my 40k mah powerbank (while keeping my other powerbanks charged to the outlet). I think you expect this from a hostel, not a Marriott by any stretch of the imagination. 😵‍💫3) YES THE BATHROOM/TOILET IS PARTITIONED VIA FROST-GLASS: in agreement with what other commenters have said, the ENTIRE ROOM is lit at night if the bathroom is being used - surely this inconvenience CAN ONLY be suitable for a single-person use in the room NOT multiple people in room as advertised. BONUS!! The glass partition of the shower is designed so close to the room, you're 100% guaranteed to have water radiate 1-2 meters, which means SHOWER SPLASH WILL BE CROSS THE THRESHOLD FROM THE BATHROOM INTO THE FLOOR OF YOUR ROOM TOO. I'm tempted to leave photos, but due to the sheer lack of space, the photos would look like a bombshell with handcarry, shopping, luggage absolutely shrewn everywhere. My professionalism would demand that edit and label the photos, which seems not worth the effort; I think my words would speak for itself. PROS: 👍The staff seems nice 👍Location, 10 min walk to Waterfront. CONS: ❌Room is small (even for an alleged "larger room") ❌Only suitable for 1 person use (at night, the inconvenience of light through the entire room via bathroom's frosted glass means room is only suitable for 1 person, not to mention the lack of space to actually be in) ❌Extremely inconvenient to have one single outlet located as far from the bed as possible (near door entrance) no less ❌ No power/generator during rolling power cuts (only automatic power cut lights provided) UNSURE: ➖I'm giving the benefit of doubt that the food is OK (though looking at other comments, this might be unlikely)

We had a split double bedroom, four single beds. Small balcony. The other rooms might just be better. The breakfast is a must! 5 stars for the food!

Fantastic service, they really go above and beyond to make you feel welcome. Room is clean and it seems like they recently renovated the bathrooms. I would highly recommend staying here

The architecture is really rudimentary. The breakfast and lunch were great. For the managers: please fix the exhaust, your omelette making person was suffering due to heat. The good thing about the hotel is they provide free water bottles every day. But the internet or wifi is super bad! The staff at the reception is great! It’s more like a lodge than a hotel. So don’t have huge expectations but the rooms are big and with standard interior.

A friend and myself decided to have a breakfast buffet at this establishment for our Valentines day "Singles" affair. The staff were amazingly helpful and always attentive, super friendly does not begin to describe it. We had good quality food and the scenery was amazing. Minus the seagulls taunting one outside, the venue does a fantastic job of creating the right ambience for a morning of overeating and indulgence.

Excellent location-- very easy to walk to the V&A markets, shops, mall, aquarium, etc Free, easily accessible parking. The rooms are small but tidy, although there is no space provided for luggage. The doors aren't well-sealed and you can hear everything out in the hallway. But the wifi was excellent, the beds were comfy, and the location was great. Nice ambience.

Not my favorite hotel. Check in process is very slow. Rooms are a bit funky. My family stayed here twice over our time here and one of the rooms didn’t even have a shower. AC was very spotty too. Never felt comfortable in rooms. Breakfast was good though!

Beautiful place to have a stay in. Receptionist are super nice and makes sure you're at your most comfortable when arriving. Bathrooms are a bit tiny. I would recommend you make sure you choose your room based on pictures. Room service is always on time and makes sure they restock coffee and if the room is clean for you to enjoy. However, the size of the room makes up for that. It is equiped with a smart TV that's quite big. The room is equipped with a telephone to call the receptionist in case you need something. The location is good, 10 minutes walk from the V&A mall. However, the turn in and out of the Hotel is a bit challenging, especially when there is a lot of traffic.

Food is good. Good variety. Value for money. Staffs in general well mannered. Tiny room. No space meant for suitcase. But clean room. Maintenance bad. We had a broken shower hose and a noisy AC. Staff did not respond quickly. One rude restaurant staff. Our package did not include breakfast. We knew we had to pay but thought it was going to be charged to our room and we would settle at check out. First morning, no one asked for payment, second morning the one staff asked for payment. We said our purse was in our room and we had to fetch same. She said in front of all clients "i cannot let you leave the room without payment". How do we pay if we do not fetch our puse from our room? She retained me at the restaurant while my husband went to fetch his purse. She treated us like crooked people. Very humiliating and this ruined my mood until the end of our stay there. Why did they let us go without paying on he first morning? Means the staffs themselves do not know their work.

The hotel is rated a 3 star hotel but I would say it is closer to 4 star. We had the harbour suite (highly recommended) and the views were amazing. Staff were friendly and the room was well equipped with a iron and mini fridge. The parking is also useful and the location is one of the best for the price you pay for the hotel.

Nice, though bit old dated hotel. Rooms are spacious but the structure of the building is so old that you hear every door slamming on the same floor. Very noisy. The bed is good and the shower less because the water turns hot and cold by itself; no fixed temperature level. Breakfast location is 2 building blocks away and breakfast itself is moderate. But don't come too late because most of it has then been out of stock. Fortunately it can be stocked but it takes time. There is no management of continously supplying of food and drinks during breakfast time. Staff is 5 star; wonderfull people who all try to feel you at home. They need an applause! Conclusion: price/quality too low.

A beautiful location in the heart of one of the most historic districts of Cape Town South Africa. Unfortunately the service is putrid especially the restaurant staff of Stonebreakers. Not hospitible at all especially to their own people. They would do good to keep in mind that along with "charity that begins at home so does everything else including hospitality"! If you treat your own, the way I've experienced, being looked down on, a nuisance, untrustworthy, unwelcome. I shudder to think how our guests in this country are being treated. I was part of a renowned international conference SEMC organising team that hosts over 80 country's delegates. In my opinion we chose the worst conference venue this time round. Disorganised and slapped together, reactive approach. Being in a five even seven star area i guess this is why they have only two stars.

Went to the spa. The service was amazing and the ladies that did the massages were so polite. I left the spa feeling like a brand new person and light as a feather.

The room is serviced and pretty good for the price. Their wi-fi needs updating, as I can't connect my Alexa device for music as the technology is outdated.

The location is good, in terms of road access. The room was spacious enough for 2, and comfortably lit. The natural light was pleasant, the blackout curtains were good for sleeping. There were plenty of international power plugs and an iron and ironing board. Plenty of parking outside. Breakfast was very good. Has good business facilities for meetings. Received free meeting room access. It's a bit of a walk to the Waterfront per se. Driving is easier, however you then pay for parking at the V&A. Parking at the hotel is R25 a day. The hotel restaurant is 2 buildings away. In summer it's a pleasant stroll, in bad weather ... No slippers provided, no gowns. The rain shower has no door, so the bathroom floor gets wet. The room we got was similar to, but not the room we selected.

I've been staying at the Lodge for many years, but this time, it was disappointing... I was(for the first time) booked into the East wing. There are terrible water damage marks on the ceiling(±30x30cm) just above my bed, bird droppings on the pillow and the curtain has a hole in it(±4x4cm). I've taken pictures and will email it to you. When I checked out, the lady at reception asked me how my stay was, and I said I'm disappointed. She only said: Oh, didn't even ask what the matter was. Really guys? I stayed at the Fire&Ice the weekend before for the same price, but the difference in standard was like chalk & cheese...

My wife and I spent a week here and although we were initially disappointed with the lackluster views and tiny room, Tawfeeq went above and beyond to make us comfortable. The room service and staff were great too, welcoming and accommodating. Wi-fi speeds were decent with zero dropouts and I was able to get my work done comfortably. The location of the hotel is excellent; safe, secure, convenient. We will definitely be staying again!

The hotel was very neat. I stayed there twice, and what I noted that I was never offered help with my bags. It is very easy to check in and staff is extremely friendly. It is just a bit inconvenient to find your room as the the floor that I stayed on twice is going in a circle. It can be somehow irritated to find your room. The restaurant is fine as I just had breakfast there twice.

The room (Dock Suite) was spacious & comfortable with partial views of the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain, very close to Green Point Stadium, Mouille Point and literally a 2min walk to the Waterfront. Sadly however there was audible noise from the road in the evenings. Great selection at the buffet breakfast but the food was cold. Other than that I had a lovely stay.
