(Translated by Google) “... This sculpture was executed for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese Discoveries and opened in 1992feb22. Conceived by João de Sousa Araújo “in bronze, 3 meters high, representing a young woman, looking at the horizon, wrapped in a sail similar to the caravels of that time, carrying a thick and resistant rope, the end of which was in Portugal and with the other I was arresting the new discovered lands ”. As stated in the donation protocol, the ALA-Academia de Letras e Artes “which decided to donate to the People of Cascais a Monument that, due to its symbolism, expression and grandeur, significantly translated the gigantic epic that was the Portuguese Discoveries”. The Secretary of State for Culture, Dr. António Sousa Lara, the Mayor of the Chamber Dr. Georges Dargent, the President of the ALA, Commander Joaquim Baraona and Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of the PALOP were present at the inauguration. It was placed at the roundabout that marked Largo Cidade Vitória and Alameda dos Combatentes da Grande Guerra. In 2001 relocated next to the Hotel Baía, on the D. Luís I promenade, with a new pedestal in Cascais blue. Because of the construction of the Hotel Baía car park, it was moved again in 2006 to the place where it is today next to Praia dos Pescadores, on Avenida D. Carlos I. ... #historiasdahistoriadecascais

Bronze sculpture of a woman, looking searchingly out across Ribeira beach and beyond, to the Atlantic Ocean and the horizon. She was placed here by the people of Cascais to celebrate 500 years of Portugese discoveries. She stands up high on a limestone pedestal and beneath her a map and compasses are etched into a bronze plaque, mapping out Portugal’s discoveries. Ribeira Beach and the sculpture are only a 5 minute walk from the train station.

Looks like a small statue of a mermaid. Probably a commemoration for local Portuguese sailors or their spirit of discovery. There's not much in the surrounding area outside of a small beach and a plaza leading some standard restaurants. Wouldn't say it's something you have to sto by,, more of an it exists local statue.

(Translated by Google) Bronze statue of a female figure, whose very long hair evokes the rigging of ships. The sculpture, by João de Sousa Araújo, is on a stone base and is a tribute to the Portuguese Discoveries.
