Finally able to visit this iconic landmark on my 5th visit in Cebu. We went here on a Sunday night. The gates were closed so we had to take photos from the outside. There were lots of families and locals gathered in the area. There weren’t much to see but worth checking out still.

Magellan's Cross in Cebu is a significant historical landmark that symbolizes the introduction of Christianity to the Philippines. The cross, housed in a simple yet charming chapel, marks the spot where Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan planted it in 1521. This site, steeped in history, is a poignant reminder of the Philippines' colonial past and its enduring faith. The atmosphere around the cross is often reflective, with locals and tourists alike visiting to pay their respects or simply to soak in the historical ambiance. Magellan's Cross is a must-visit for its historical and cultural significance in Cebu.

One of the first things that struck me was the accessibility of Magellan's Cross. It's conveniently located in the heart of Cebu City, making it an easy stop for tourists. Whether you're on a city tour or exploring Cebu on foot, you'll find it accessible and well-marked. The history behind Magellan's Cross is a fascinating journey back in time. It marks the spot where Ferdinand Magellan planted a cross in 1521, signifying the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. The site is rich in cultural heritage and is a must-visit for history buffs. The historical information displayed around the site provides valuable insights into the significance of this cross and its role in shaping the Philippines. What truly stood out during my visit was the warmth of the local people. They are not only welcoming but also eager to share the history and take photos of visitors. It's a heartwarming experience to have locals approach you with a smile and offer to capture your memories. It's a testament to the friendly and hospitable nature of the Filipino people.

a spot marking the entry of Christianity into th Philippines. just a small chapel like building wherein you can offer candles and a prayer. the mural atop was pretty and the architecture was preserved well.

To go to Magellan‘s cross is free. You don’t need to pay anything but it is crowded. It sits next to a Catholic church that has a mass that usually goes on but there are guards there but it’s very lovely to see the inside of the pavilion with the cross itself knowing you’re stepping in front of history if you’re visiting Cebu, you should definitely visit this place. It also sits next to a couple of market places. The parking is not too far but you will have to pay for it but I think it’s only 30 pesos but as well worth coming to.

Entrance is free. It is also near the Basilica del Sto.Niño where you can offer prayers. We were reminded by our tour guide to be mindful since it was reported to have pickpocketing there.

It is just a metal cross in a stone enclosure behind metal gates. With billions of drippy & droopy candles stuffed in there. Looked like a disgusting mess to clean up. And yes, drippy and droopy were the best words to describe these candles.

Impressive place. Not too crowded. It is a small chapel where people come to admire, to pray, to reflect on the history. The sealing has a beautiful painting and the cross is preserved very well. I liked the area very much and I think it is a must see while in Cebu. Walking distance from other important monuments in the city.

No entrance fee is needed upon entering the Magellan’s Cross. This establishment is also situated beside Minor Basilica of Holy Child of Cebu also known as the Sto. Nino Church. Don’t forget to light 🔥 a candle 🕯️ here after visiting Magellan’s Cross! Better to have your day viewing during weekday, less people are around. A little history from Wikipedia: Magellan's Cross Pavilion is a stone kiosk in Cebu City, Philippines. The structure is situated on Plaza Sugbo beside the Basilica del Santo Niño. It houses a Christian cross that was planted by explorers of the Spanish expedition of the first circumnavigation of the world, led by Ferdinand Magellan, upon arriving in Cebu in the Philippines on April 21, 1521. Along with the Basilica del Santo Niño's church and convent buildings, the pavilion is a declared National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines.

The place was crowded as it was a weekend, most of them church-goers and tourists walking around. It was a nice experience seeing Magellan’s Cross (or what encases it, as the original isn’t actually what’s on display). If you have a private vehicle and get off by the church front, you will be met by vendors who sell trinkets and candles, eager to tell you a story or two about what they’re selling. There are also people who sell refreshments all over the place in case you get thirsty from all the walking you’ll be doing.

It's a historical cross from Magellans first world circumnavigation. 500 years old. Cool to see if you are into history. Not much more to do here than take a pic and move on tho. Plan on about 15 min here tops. It is right next to st Nino church which is of significance and worth seeing.

This is my dream destination! I really love this landmark, and finally i saw it up close. I was grateful and prayed for protection and happiness for my family and myself. 🥹❤️ There were a lot of people when we visited this place, the parking is not that hard to find. The Magellan Cross is the symbol of Cebu, and the image of the chapel appears in the center of the city emblem. This is the cross that Magellan erected on the beach after arriving in Cebu, symbolizing the colonization of the islands by the Spanish king, and is now housed in a hexagonal pavilion in the center of Cebu City Hall. The ceiling frescoes of the hexagonal chapel still retain their original appearance, and the realistic ceiling frescoes on the top of the cross are of great ornamental value. Cebuans believe in and respect this cross with historical and cultural significance. Every Sunday morning, countless good men and women bring incense and candles to pray for peace and good luck.

When we came to this historical place, there were really many tourists and Cebuano's dancing and singing inside the stone kiosk with their long skirts. I don't know what they were doing before. It could be part of showcasing or expressing their devotion. It took them how many minutes with their activity, so it was hard for guests like us to take a solo picture inside. But that was a good decision because we could also take photos of the mural and the cross! The mural was indeed perfect! Seeing the stone kiosk from afar makes you think it is small, but once you get in, you will know that it can house around twenty persons or more moving inside simultaneously. It has two gates, so you can freely get in and out. Before I forget, I suggest you bring your umbrella when you visit this place because it is a few meters away from the other buildings. Also, many vendors sell products, even a nearby Pasalubong Center, that most tourists will surely like. It's just near the place, so you can buy and enjoy the destination at the same time. You can ride a taxi or jeepney to come to this place. When it comes to restrooms, you have options, too! You better keep your eyes open.

This is just my viewpoint. I had so high expectations before going here as tourist. But when I went there I was a bit disappointed at how small it is, not a great for picture. It's of historical significance. But the park where it is located, is nice

Nice monument. For the religiously inclined, some old women will approach you and ask if you'd like to avail of their "padasal" (pray-over) services while moving around some candles. For them to place it at the altar, with the assumption that the Sto. Niño church employees will collect and light them up later in the basilica. Behind the Cross Monument lies one of the entrance to the Basilica. Entrace is free. Most devotees or locals greet the Sto. Niño with a wave 👋 like waving hi to the baby Jesus.

Visiting Magellan's Cross in Cebu City was a remarkable experience me. The cross, a symbol of Christianity's arrival in the Philippines, is encased in a wooden protective casing. The atmosphere was solemn and respectful, with locals and tourists alike paying homage. The nearby ceiling paintings, depicting Magellan's landing, added a vibrant historical context. This visit offered a profound sense of connection to a pivotal moment in history and the enduring cultural and spiritual identity of the Philippines.

On my third visit, Magellan's Cross continues to enchant me, evoking a sense of time travel to the era when the Philippines was first discovered by the Spaniards. The historical resonance is truly captivating. Yet, it's worth noting that the site tends to get quite crowded, and locals often approach, eager to sell candles and various religious items, adding a dynamic layer to the overall experience.

Magellan's Cross is a significant historical site with cultural and architectural importance, conveniently located in the center of Cebu City. However, it can get crowded, and the size and limited information provided might leave some visitors expecting more. Visitors should plan their visit with these considerations in mind. Pros of Magellan's Cross: Historical Significance: Magellan's Cross is a historically significant site, marking the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. It's a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage and religious history. Cultural Experience: Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture by learning about the story of Magellan's Cross and its importance in Cebuano history. Central Location: The cross is conveniently located in the heart of Cebu City, making it easy to access and an ideal starting point for exploring other nearby attractions. Architectural Beauty: The octagonal chapel housing Magellan's Cross is a beautiful piece of colonial architecture, with intricate carvings and classic design elements. Cons of Magellan's Cross: Crowds: The site can get very crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons, making it challenging to fully appreciate the historical significance and take pictures without a crowd in the background. Size: Magellan's Cross is relatively small and may not meet the expectations of those looking for a larger, more imposing historical monument. Limited Time: Visitors may find that they can only spend a short amount of time at the site due to its size and the limited information provided. Maintenance Issues: At times, the condition of the site and the surrounding area may suffer from maintenance issues, such as graffiti or litter.

It's of great significance to Christianity in the country. The cross itself is housed inside the octagonal kiosk right across city hall.

When we started to roam Cebu City, this was our first stop! Beside the Magellan’s cross is the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. The cross was inside of a gazebo that is inside of a plaza. You can side park your car because the parking slots near the plaza are for the government officials as the plaza is near the municipal hall. That means, you can park your car elsewhere near the Basilica church then you walk your way to the cross. There are old women selling candles that you can offer on the cross and pray for your intentions.

This place still captivates my soul that I never miss the chance of taking a single photo every time I pass by in this historic landmark. Being a Cebuano this cross plays a big role in our Christianity / Catholicism. A bit crowded on weekends and during Sinulog since it is very accessible. I like that the government tried to keep this place clean but I also hope that we local and international tourist / travellers would help this effort as well.

  • 4/5 Choco L. 1 year ago on Google
It's good to visit this place and learn some history. However, avoid during weekends specially on Sundays. Since it is just beside the Sto. Nino Church expect a volume or flock of crowd during Sundays.

  • 5/5 Francis “Sun” R. 1 year ago on Google
Prepare to bring umbrellas! Even when its a sunny day dont underestimate Cebu heat! The Cross is kinda small at first glance but when you enter the little building it stands so brilliantly! Please take care however, if you're still cautious or like a germaphobe, please bring alcohol. People tend to gather even with the warnings.

Did a self-guided walk through the historical sites in Cebu City. It was great! While the Magellan cross itself is nothing special, it was a nice place to visit before ending the tour at the Fort.... And the Fort is really cool minus the crowds! 😊
