A historic temple in the heart of Chandannagar. The temple is built in ekbangla or dochala style with very little terracotta work. The temple was damaged in the Third Carnatic War between French and British in 1757 AD and the British looted the temple and broke the original idol of Nandadulal. The present idol of Nandadulal was established much later.

This south facing Hindu temple of Lord Krishna is very near to Chhobighar bus stop ( eastern side) of G.T. road and nearly 2 km from Chandannagar Railway station of Howrah-Bandel rail route. The areas of Chandannagar, like Boro, Gondalpara, Khalisani were very old . Chandannagar was under French reign from 1674 A.D. to 1950 A.D. From 1731 A.D. huge development of Chandannagar were done by Joseph Francois Dupleix , the then Superintendent of French affairs . This flat roofed temple with Ek Bangla ( or Dochala ) porch was built by Indra Narayan Choudhary in 1740 A.D. Afterwards during Anglo-French war , the temple walls were damaged by cannonball. The dimensions of main shrine is 16m(L)*3.5m(W). The dimensions of Ek Bangla style porch ( in front of main shrine) is 16m(L)*4.3m(W). Inside the Garvagriha Lord Krishna is worshiped daily from 7am to 8am, 12 noon to 1pm, 7pm to 9pm. In annual religious utsab SriSri Krishna Janmashtami( Bangla Bhadra month) huge number of religious people come here every year.

It was sad to see such a beautiful temple to be almost deserted. Few people were chatting on the temple stairs and they were not bothered about anyone entering the temple. The deity is so beautiful. It's in walking distance from the Sacred Heart Church

Nandadulal Temple is a small eighteenth-century temple located in Chandannagar, West Bengal, India. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is one of the finest examples of do-chala (double-sloped roof) temple architecture in the region. The temple was built in 1739 by Indranarayan Chowdhury, the diwan of Raja Krishnachandra of Nadia. The temple is made of red bricks and has a simple, yet elegant design. The main entrance is flanked by two tall pillars and is surmounted by a triangular pediment. The roof of the temple is double-sloped and is covered with terracotta tiles. The interior of the temple is plain and whitewashed, and houses a beautiful black stone idol of Lord Krishna. The Nandadulal Temple is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus from all over West Bengal and beyond. It is especially crowded during the festivals of Janmashtami (Krishna's birthday) and Doljatra (the spring festival). The temple is also notable for its historical significance. It is one of the few monuments in Chandannagar that survived the Battle of Chandannagore in 1757, when Lord Clive's British forces defeated the French.

Heritage temple of chandannagar, and most visited place. Historic temple of Chandernagore, the original architecture was similar to the brick temples of Bishnupur. There are several historical temples around Chandernagore, but Nandadulal Temple is the most prominent one.

It is in Chandannagar ,Hoogly , more than 300 years old. Lord Clive demolished the Krishna idol of this temple and looted property worth 65 lakhs from chandannagar itself. Now this temple is being maintained by the local people. There is no trustee board.

The photo of the Nanda-dulal (Nanda's darling = Lord Krishna) temple had attracted us. We knew nothing of its history or architecture and decided that we would definitely see it on our drive to Chandannagar (Chandannagore). we reached it in the afternoon and the temple was closed. we were not too upset and took a few photos, However a young boy from across the narrow lane called out and asked if we wanted to enter....of course we did. A little later an elderly gentleman came and opened the doors ....not just to the temple but to a page in history and two historical figures that every Indian remembers. Siraj-ud-dulla and Robert Clive. Clive sacked this temple, we learnt, slaughtered the local zamindar (Indranarayan Chaudhury ) and his family (the daughter's line remains but the male line is finished), broke the idol and threw it into the lake just behind the temple (it is a pond now) but was once connected to the River and felt its tidal influence. Parts of the original idol were fished out about a century later and re-immersed at Kashi. Today the temple has a new idol. the gentleman kindly showed us how under the ceremonial bed (complete with pillow, sheet and the mosquito net)of the Lord is the way to the treasury that was looted in yore. An ex-army man this temple and its history is a passion with Shri Tapan Kumar Chattopadhayay....and I owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for showing us around and MOST importantly being such a source of information about this temple. He has even marked a place on the rear wall of the temple with a red cross sign: the place where Clive's cannon ball hit it. Today the serenity of this place has to be seen to be believed...but as I closed my eyes to say a prayer for those who died in battle that day... felt goosebumps. Bottomline: Do visit. And do ask if Shrii Chattopadhayay is around. He is a fount of information and a great storyteller and lover of history. I was lucky to have met him...he gave so generously of his time and made history come alive. And it's famous for durga puja also...

The oldest existing monument of Chandannagar, hosting lord shri krishna. It is almost about 300 years old. Marks of canon ball fired during the war between France and Britain at Chandannagar in 1757 can be seen today at the back wall of the temple. It's architecture resembles old Bengal do chala.

A widow with two boys named Rajaram and Indranath being driven out of Jessore (now in Bangla Desh ) was found in Chinsurah ,the adjacent Dutch settlement looking for shelter in the early part of 18th Century.Having failed to obtain such a refuge at Chinsurah arrived at Chandannagore the then French Settlement and got what she wanted. Her youngest son Indra was very meritorious and intelligent and established himself as a successful revenue collector of the French settlement. He bought landed property where he had his residential house and the said temple built. Nanddulal was their household deity and that is why the image of Nandadulal was installed in 1740. While there was strong rivalry between French and British Trade companies as to be predominant in the riparian area, the British forces attacked the French forces and occupied Chandannagore prior to the battle of Palasey in 1757. British were afraid that the then Nawab of Bengal should not be allowed any chance to get assistance from the French and the attack of Chandannagore was just the prelude to prevent the Nawab and French to build axis. During this war Nanddulal temple was damaged but it is doubtful whether the damage was due to use of cannon by the British who always kept them off from breaking any temple or breaking the image. However the image or the statue was reportedly thrown into the nearby pond from where the lower part of the image was caught in the net of fisherman and has been kept in the nearby museum, while the upper part was reportedly taken to Benares and immersed in the Ganges. The temple remained without any image or statute for a long time and the temple was renovated in 1958 and a new image was installed in 2005. There is a committee which runs the temple and the daily worship takes place in the morning and evening. The opening time in the morning from 7 to 9-30 and in the evening from 7-to 9 PM.

One of the few places where Durga Puja is celebrated in Chandernagore. It was a heavenly experience whilst offering anjali on the mahastami morning. The priest's chants in divining melody created a supernatunal ambience.
