A Place with a loads of Historical Value

The museum has small but quite good collection of French and British history of Chandannagar. It treasures books, letters, paintings, photographs, furnitures, newspaper cuttings which depict the rich history of Chandannagar. The Dupleix Palace reflects magnificent French architecture.

This museum is a deception and a scam. Don’t waste your time trying to visit it, unless you want to admire an eternally closed gate, a rusty chain and a rusty padlock. I came many times to this place, even one time from Kokata, when i was announced to be open by the museum cheaters, but it was every time closed. This museum is the erstwhile official residence of the French Governer of Chandannagar province. A long line of Governors is said to have passed through the portals of this colonnaded mansion. It is maintained well, with pretty gardens and a statue of the Marianne (the national symbol of France) located right next to the entrance. The museum has a French language institute within its premises. It has an interesting collection of French memorabilia, that gives you an insight into the French rule in these parts.
