Who is up for history lesson? Ok then I’ll keep it short 😁 The 19th century fortress built by the ottomans in order to control the island of Crete. Needless to say, the plan failed but this beautiful fortress survived in perfect condition until today. It was temporarily closed when we got there but the outside of the fort promises. We could see through the lock hole of the main gate that they were doing some restoration so it will surely be a hit when they open for public. Oh, and interesting fact! The sea the fortress is “looking at” is the sea to which the sirens were thrown after a defeat by the muses in a contest - mythological tale of the muse and sirens congesting in the singing contest. Google it or read my review on the archeological site of the ancient Aptera 😉

Spectacular view all over Souda bay. Amazing sunset. Full of energy, because of the ancient structures. I strongly recommend it.

Fantastisch.

Spent two hours in Aptera visiting the site. Because Aptera overlooks Souda Bay, it has strategic signigance even to this day. The Ottomans recognizing this built this fortress in part to control the local population who were restive under Ottoman rule.

This is an amazing place, especially at sunset. You can get to this place only by road. In the evening, the wind and lamb bells create a special atmosphere. From the top of the hill, there are almost 360 degrees of stunning views.

Beeindruckende Festungsanlage.

Beautiful fortress from outside. Not open for visitors yet though but it's a nice place to see on top of Ancient Aptera. Wish there was more information outside.

Fantastic site, very cheap, visited at same time as knossos and the museum. After exploring the fortress and taking in the views from the top, it's well worth heading up the main street, there is an amazing ice cream Shop near the top on the right. Gorgeous!

Great views of the Souda Bay, but disappointing due to the site being close with no timetable outside! All in all if you visiting Aptera then it is a worthy stop!

You’re only able to visit the fort from the outside and there is no sign or explanation (in English) whether it’s never open or just temporarily closed. Anyways - it’s worth it to walk or drive up the hill to see the fort and to enjoy the view. When you’re in the area make sure to see the ancient city of aptera too!

A partially restored fortress on a promontory with an unbelievable view of Souda Bay.

😐 This is not a beach but the private property of a monastery. Entrance fees are 2,5€ per person. It is OFFICIALLY FORBIDDEN to swim there. As of today water was pretty dirty with sharp stones that would destroy your skin very easily. Concerning the hike, it is a bit technical and would require correc...

👍👍 A merely 20 minutes walk from the monastery. The trail is paved with stones so it’s an easy route. Arkoudospilio (Arkouda = Bear in Greek, the name comes from the rocky formation in the middle of the cave that resembles a bear) is the first checkpoint on the route to Katholiko Beach. From there you...
