We rented their apartment unit with my parents to visit family in the Chester area. We stayed for 5 days. It was the best decision we ever made. The staff was courteous, the location is more than ideal. There are many shops in the area to get snacks or take-out. We never cooked, except for breakfast, but there is a fully loaded kitchen. It was clean and stylish, and close to everything. About a 5 min cab ride to the train station, and a five minute walk to major shopping and historical sites. They made cots available to us, and helped us with directions, or trouble shooting with the washing machine (included in the laundry room). Very reasonably priced, we found, as well. Would recommend to anyone, our relatives will be doing the same, hope to be back to visit another time!

Went for afternoon tea to celebrate my 30th birthday after reading about it online. Unfortunately not as nice as expected, have had better afternoon teas for cheaper elsewhere. Sandwiches were ok, scones were flat and dense with an odd taste and the sweet treats consisted of mostly macarons. Would have expected some small cakes. Felt as though we had received the remnants of what they had in stock. Also tried to charge more in person than the booking price online however they did acknowledge this and lower the bill accordingly. Decor is nice and service was ok. Unfortunately I wouldn't return for afternoon tea.

Went for afternoon tea, lovely place, very pretty inside, but unfortunately the service wasn't great, we were put onto a very high table, even though there was a restaurant and other rooms, when we got there, they didn't have the correct information about the afternoon tea, food and drink came out very quickly, but then not one member came over to see if everything was OK, there was no communication over the drinks or how to pay, I had to go up to see how we paid. I know it's very popular for drinks but I think the service could be better.

Nice different hotel. Friendly staff. Breakfast excellent. Room in the loft could have better electric plug access for kettle. Had to plug into extension lead on floor. Limited shower soaps and cleaning around shower poor. Toilet area not good if you are bigger than 5ft tall. OK if you are a hobbit! Bed comfy and big. Room could be hot in summer. Bar prices expensive.

Room was nice, and breakfast was nice. They accidentally left music playing on the PA in the room below ours (an event space) until 1:30am, which was loud enough to keep us awake. We assumed it was a wedding party, so didn't complain at the time, but it turns out it had just been left on by accident. We should have called reception to complain sooner, and it would have been fixed aooner. Not great, but mistakes happen.

Had a fantastic time at the Bywater wedding this weekend at Oddfellows. Staff were absolutely amazing and couldn't do enough for us. We stayed over and were given the most amazing room. Perfect 5*

Just went for drinks. Sat in the beer garden. Had a wonderful time. The staff were pleasant, we really enjoyed ourselves. The beer garden was superb.

Had our wedding here recently and the staff literally could not have been more fantastic. Rebecca the events planner and the Jay the bar manager (I think) were absolutely fantastic and honestly some of the best staff I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Will absolutely recommend this venue to anyone who asks.

The restaurant is lovely, quirky decor and a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and the food was exceptional. Thoroughly enjoyed our night here. Extensive range of cocktails, and you can taste the alcohol in them. (I've been to a few places where it just tastes like really sweet juice) Only downside... the place was difficult to find, and resulted in us wandering around for 10 minutes and finding someone for directions, so 'O**fellows' is where you want to go, I get its 'The Secret Garden' but maybe a clue would have been handy. Good location otherwise in city centre. We didn't stay over so can't really comment on the rooms (have given 5 stars anyway)

Had a lovely night at the hotel, which included breakfast and dinner. Food good, although the starter wasn't as described. Very quirky- loved the secret garden. We sat out in the pouring rain until late in one of the undercover, cosy heated pods/ seating area. I thought that as the prices are quite steep there would have been some little extra touches in the room. Limited tea bags and milk. No biscuits. The biggest negative for me was the restaurant, the bar area is very sumptuous, however the restaurant has a scandi feel with bright lights and basic furniture. It was perfect for breakfast, but felt like a canteen at dinner. All but one member of staff were pleasant and obliging.

Booked afternoon tea here with my mum during the pandemic and due to commitments was unable to go until now. Natalie was very understanding and accommodating, we are now booked in to go in a few weeks. Really easy booking process and quick responses to my emails. Looking forward to my visit.

Fantastic place and such pretty surroundings. The garden, outside seating is beautiful. I booked a table and planned a marriage proposal. The staff communicated through email to arrange what I needed before hand and it all went to plan. Thank you to the young lad who I asked to bring the ring to table along with some champagne and our favourite drink, baby Guinness's. All the staff were fantastic and applauded after I'd asked the question, she said yes. Amazing night, amazing place and even better staff. Well done guys, keep up the hard work and we plan to be back for another trip soon. Maybe even a wedding booking.

I went for the traditional cream tea with my son and parents after seeing an offer on Groupon and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The service was friendly and welcoming with a great selection of sandwiches and cakes and delicious scones. We will definitely consider eating here again after having such a positive experience.

The night porter is fantastic, the most helpful and friendly member of staff. Thank you, we much appreciate you for our stay. Our room was too hot with no way of cooling it down despite reception help, sheets and floors were not particularly clean, toilet and shower position not great especially with no ventilation. Only reason I would stay again is if the night porter were here , best customer service, went above and beyond to help each time we asked in the night time. Incredibly responsive. Thank you night porter, made our stay. Also cleaning maids in the morning were great, very kind and helpuf, thank you both.

We went out of season so it was dead, but the food was unbelievable! Very good value as comparable in price with very run of the mill alternatives around Chester, but the quality and flavour were really leagues above anything else we had during our trip. Would definitely eat there again!

Had a great night at Secret Garden, unfortunately we were the only two people eating so it did impact on the atmosphere but Ellie May our server and Sam from the bar did their utmost to make our experience enjoyable. Excellent food and cocktails. Good luck with the launch of your new Asian menu and we will be back to sample.

We had a Groupon coupon for two,two course meals with a glass of wine. The food was excellent. Well presented and cooked to the highest standard. The waitress was very attentive and offered us an alternative to the glass off wine each so I had a pint and my wife had a soft drink. All this for under £35. What a bargain in todays price climate. The only cons to this experience was the lack of parking which meant a long walk and expensive car park. To access the hotel you have to go up stairs and I didn't notice a wheelchair access.

Well, honestly … very disappointed with this afternoon tea … a birthday gift voucher for two, with an extra addition … so 3 in total and the third was charged a whopping £24.95 for 4 small sandwiches a tiny slice of sausage roll a selection of small cakes a small slice of sausage and a scone with pot jam and clotted cream and a coffee or tea … this extra cost was split between us all .The Sandwiches were tasteless, along with the very dry cakes and probably a shop bought scone too. Think the only actual tasty bit was the sausage roll portion ! And the coffee … cold and one was only a half cup of a latte and this was in a small cup ! And service well.. not the best .But let’s be positive for the future … and hope the taste factor improves. The second star was for the Sausage Roll !

Myself and a friend treated ourselves to afternoon tea on a Sunday. The food was really nice but the service was terrible. We were there for almost 2 hours and apart from bringing our food, not one member of staff came over to us and it wasn't busy at all. I had to find someone to ask for some more tea, and even when we packed up to leave, no one approached us, we had to go to the bar and pay on the way out. The service really let you down here.

A wonderful afternoon tea. Range of sandwiches included: egg & cress, hock ham, chicken ( not too fussed on this one) and cheese. Scones were tasty and there was a selection of 4 different mini cakes. Tea option taken rather than prosecco. Would recommend.

Had bought afternoon tea off Groupon 2 months ago for me & my gf to use when we was visiting chester city centre. We was quite disappointed & underwhelmed tbh with quality, taste & expected more because previous reviews. Was more so the top layer of cakes, macaroons etc we didn't enjoy. They tasted like pre package cheap shop bought stuff you'd get out lidl, poundstretcher. The staff was very attentive & Sandwiches ,tea was nice though atleast & also the inside interior of restaurant, hotel was very nice. We'd probably at somepoint stay here overnight tbh.

Went here after our wedding meal on the 25th July, the bartender was absolutely amazing. We stayed in Mary's loft and had a lovely night and an amazing breakfast the next morning. My only negative point was the water was luke warm both times we tried getting baths.

  • 3/5 Catherine S. 9 months ago on Google
We had a Groupon Deal and when we attended - we were told the options were not available and it was Sunday Lunch only - despite Groupon advertising other meals. My meal was sent back as Luke warm. So my partner had eaten his meal before mine came back. Service was poor as I think they must have been short staffed. Bit disappointed as have had lovely meals and experiences before. Food is lovely but quite a few things lacking which made me sad as I was so looking forward to our meal.

Unfortunately disappointing. Had booked a good month or so in advance to go for afternoon tea for my birthday and specified I’d like a Vegan option. This they said was fine and I had been before and it was great. Ordered no problem but when it came out was told that they had no vegan scone. Had no choice but to just deal with this news although in my opinion this is not an afternoon tea. Everything was okay but when you pay £21 for an afternoon tea with no cream tea it makes you question the price a bit more! They did say we’ve given you an extra cake however it was just half of another cake that was there. Overall it was extremely disappointing and the staff all seemed a little off like not sure what they were doing there. Not a good birthday treat

Afternoon tea at the secret garden , while very nice , even with an empty venue we were seated by the kitchen door, the table was wobbly , this alone drops what should be 5* to 3*, staff were friendly otherwise, service was fast and the food and drinks excellent, the cocktails are really great here .

Stayed at the hotel so evening meal and breakfast were both served here. Couldn't fault it. Menus were good, portion sizes were large, food was delicious and staff attentive and pleasant. Will definitely be returning.

Attended a wedding here. All was lovely. Stayed in old part of hotel, attic rooms. Got a bit warm as only roof window with limited opening. plugpoints are skirting board height which wasn't good. Lighting is very bright with bathroom separated by a glazed screen so if any night trips to the bathroom required in the dark be careful of the low beams on slanted ceiling. Such a characterful building tho. There is a modern extension for accommodation if preferred.

Very nice setting and atmosphere. Staff very attentive. Afternoon tea wasn't the best we've had, the sandwiches were very small with little filling. 2 out of the 4 were vegetarian (cheese/egg) which are pretty basic considering the price. The cakes were okay, nothing extraordinary. The scones however were amazing. When we asked for herbal tea they didn't have two flavours in which is strange considering they primarily sell afternoon tea

Visited oddfellows for the prestige afternoon tea with my parents, I am vegan but both my parents eat meat. Unfortunately the vegan afternoon was really disappointing with shop bought falafels, hummus with breadsticks, tiny cauliflower bites and an underdone vegan sausage roll. I suspect that most of the savoury section is repurposed from the other dishes they make. The cakes and sandwiches weren't much better. The sandwich fillings were what seemed to be shop bought guacamole and more crumbled up falafel. Not much variety in cake with two pieces of brownie, a flapjack and shortbread cake. No scone either! It's such a shame as the normal afternoon tea looked great and the garden was lovely to sit out in. Couldn't help feel that the vegan afternoon tea was a complete after thought and hastily put together with what they had in the kitchen. Would have been fine if I showed up un announced but I did let them know that I was vegan before hand. All in all a huge disappointment, heart sunk a bit when they brought mine to the table. Would not recommend to other vegans, especially as I was charged the same price for something of much lower quality.

We booked our wedding through Oddfellows. We were super impressed by the communication, attention to detail and care put through their wedding planners. Everything went so well on the day, Rebecca was incredibly patient and ran such a slick operation on the day, making the bride much more relaxed and we were both able to have a brilliant time. The food was outstanding; the main meals, canapes and evening food were spot on. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and would recommend this venue to anyone wanting to have a slightly 'quirky' venue to celebrate their big day.

Had a lovely meal, which was reasonably priced. Good service and they were able to accommodate dietary requests with ease. House wine was very good. Will go again.

It was a nice little place for afternoon tea. The food was great. The staff were great. The only downside was we were sat right next to another table who were talking pretty loud even though there were only 2 of us and a whole empty space. And it was also difficult to get staffs attention unless they walked into our area.

  • 5/5 Cheryl G. 2 years ago on Google
Lovely Afternoon Tea, with a nice selection of cakes and tasty sandwich fillings. Personal favourite for me was plain scones, not fruit ones, traditionally served with raspberry jam and clotted cream.

Dropped by for a drink in the outside space on the weekend. We were not greeted when we came in the entrance and it wasn't clear to us if we needed to be seated by the staff or not. When I flagged down someone they directed me to a table, however we then had an uncomfortably long wait for a server to take our order followed by and even longer wait for our drinks to then arrive. No sign of a waiter to ask for the bill, so I paid at the bar, drinks extremely overpriced especially considering the service and experience.

Enjoyed my visit here. Lovely drinks and dining however my service was a bit slow. However I am more than happy to return and be proven different. Would recommend!

Visited oddfellows for a friend's birthday this weekend and we all had the afternoon tea. The food and drink was delicious, we were also in a private dining room which was great. Only slight issue was that the service was quite slow but otherwise was a great visit.

  • 1/5 Helen O. 2 years ago on Google
Very disappointed. Prestige afternoon tea was £26. Consisted of equivalent of one small sandwich. Thin slice.of sausage roll, hard small fishcakes.Hard scones that we and another table nearby asked to be changed as so hard. Small slightly stale cakes. Service considering it was quiet was very slow. We had to wait and ask for drinks etc. Beautiful building but let down by poor over priced food and poor service.

Good bar with nice atmosphere. Food was OK although we only tried the pizza. We had fun in here and the serving staff were helpful and entertaining. Toilets were of a good quality and were clean. Overall I would recommend.
