Great views from the city walls. Steep steps in places but worth it. Nice stroll with a different view of the city.

Roman walls around Chester City Centre. In all about 5,000 steps, (approx 2 miles) ancient built Roman wall, restored to make a fabulous and interesting walk round Chester city Center. Starts by the river and Chester castle, takes in the city Center, the Roman Amphitheatre, Chester cathedral, the canal, and Chester race horse track. Lots of places to stop, eat & drink, walking tours available if you want. A walk and wander along the City Walls is one of the best ways to discover and experience the magnificent history of Chester. All in all great couple of hours walk taking in all the history and sights of Chester. Highly recommended!

The walk round the city wall is a great way to introduce yourself to Chester. Great views over the River Dee, the shopping centre (get off by the amazing clock tower), the Cathedral, the castle and the Racetrack. Chester is rightly famous for its wonderful black and white buildings, great shops and pubs some of which have a lot of history themselves. It's about 2 miles round, so not too strenuous. After doing it, you probably won't get lost anywhere in the city.

The walls surround the city, providing you with beautiful views of the spectacular city. It is approximately a 2 mile walk on uneven surfaces that include climbing stairs. I wouldn't recommend for anyone with mobility issues.

We did the walls in about 45-50 minutes, taking a more leisurely pace as we read all the signs along the way and stopped for pictures a few times. The walk is well paved, though there are stairs in places, and it's a pretty easy walk compared to other city wall walks we've done. It's extremely picturesque to do the whole loop as it passes the cathedral, racecourse, main shopping area, and more historic sites along the way. Highly recommend if in Chester as it's free and you get to see a good amount of the town.

Lovely high level walled walk around the pretty town of Chester. We were on a boating holiday from Anderton Marina, near Northwich, and decided on route to Chester and weren't disappointed. This walk includes a number of staircases to access it but gives amazing views of the city, River Dee and canal. Looking forward to seeing shops inside the walls tomorrow. There are some essential restoration works happening but it doesn't affect the walk. Definitely recommend. πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘πŸ»

An interesting day out. We walked the walls, walked round the cathedral, went to the river, visited the Sick to Death museum. Plenty of history. Plenty of shops and restaurants in such old buildings too.

A beautiful walk in a beautiful City. Roman walls, Roman gardens, Cathedral views, river views, racecourse views, canal views, Welsh mountain views (a major purpose of the walls) the second most photographed clock in the UK after you know who.

The city wall is a walk, yes you walk along the wall, not a regular wall, you can't walk of the edge, you're enclosed on the sides !!! It's quite a distance the length of it is, at least 2 or more miles long, the wall is very historic like a castle, whilst walking along it you go past some really interesting places like the river side and the suspension Bridge and the cathedral also the horse race course or the shipping areas ! Yes the wall is deffinatly a big attraction for all ages πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

A lovely and interesting walk which takes about an hour. A great way to see the city and get your bearings. Plenty of places to stop for coffee en route. I grew up her abd it was rumpured that William Shatner used to run around the walls for exercise when he stayed at the Grovesnor Hotel.

Chester city walls consist of a defensive structure built to protect the city of Chester in Cheshire, England. Their construction was started by the Romans when they established the fortress of Deva Victrix between 70 and 80 CE. It originated with a rampart of earth and turf surmounted by a wooden palisade. From about 100 CE they were reconstructed using sandstone, but were not completed until over 100 years later.Β The walls are now the one of the most tourist attractions in Chester City.

Chester city walls are a fantastic place to visit. Built by the Romans in the first century of local red sandstone large sections of the wall survive remarkably intact. Walking around the walls is a great way to see the City from a nice elevated walkway, free from traffic it is a very nice relaxing way to travel around the City, and to take in the sights, parts of it go through the main shopping area the famous Arcade on two levels and by the river dee. These are the best preserved city walls outside of York.

If in Chester you should try and visit the city wall And walk around as much if not all that you can . It’s a great photo opportunity for different pictures of the city from different angles and places. You can start and finish your walk in many different places. The wall unfortunately is not accessible at all for anyone with a need for a wheelchair or sticks with many many steps up and down around the top of the wall . Be aware also it can be slippery though out the winter period. All pictures taken by my brother on this visit.

Chester is a beautiful town filled with history. A walk around the walls is a must, takes about 40minutes but lots of information plaques providing facts about the area. Views of the racecourse, cathedral, river Dee, Shops and much more.

The most intact ancient walls, repaired and gentrified in Georgian times. We love walking old walled cities. Stop off at the churches and cathedrals.

A stroll along the city walls is an excellent way to see the very best of Chester. We took our time, stepping off every now and again to see nearby sites; Chester Cathedral, Roman Amphitheatre and Gardens and Chester Racecourse. Most of the walls are really accessible with just few steps here and there. There are plenty of helpful plaques and information boards. Best of all, though...it's FREE!

Each city has something that makes it unique; for Chester, it's definitely it's walls. They provide a fascinating commentary on the history of the city and provide it with much character. No matter where you go in the city, you'll probably end up within eyeshot. They're very well maintained (especially considering their age) and give an excellent route for touring the city. Lately, more sections have been getting closed down for longer periods of time but given the complexity of maintaining such a historic landmark, I'd much rather suffer the slight inconvenience as opposed to the alternative.

An absolute must if visiting Chester. The city walls circumnavigate the historical quarter of Chester and following a decade worth of renovations, the walls are in great condition. It is also completely free to walk around the entire perimeter.

What a lovely town Chester is, didn't do much of the Roman walls as our stopover wasn't long enough, however as we live near York, this old world town is a close second for visitors to enjoy we loved it.

Having grown up local to Chester I used to walk them a few times a year but haven't done so for maybe 8 years and this evening it brought back all the memories with the veiws off the walls and the local land mark's. The perfect way to get around the city, easy to hop on and off at different points to explore some shops and grab some food.

Great way to see the city before you go in. Some lovely views of both the inner city & some of the outlying area. You can circumnavigate the whole city in about an hour or get on & off the walls via one of many flights of stairs, as you work your way around. Little Roodee Car Park, on the south side of the city & accessible from the A483 Grosvenor Road, is an ideal place to park to access the City Wall. From here, heading east & looking across the river Dee, you can see the spire of 'St Mary Without the Walls' in the area of Handbridge. As you hard North along the wall you can see the Chester Roman Gardens outside of the walls confines & the very interesting Park Street inside. You soon pass Westgate Clock Tower. Not much further on you pass the very impressive Chester Cathedral, within the city walls, next is an interesting Falconry Centre. As you then come to King Charles Tower & the walls turn left, to wards the northern edge of the original city boundary, you can look down, what seems like a long way, in to the passing Shropshire Union Canal & then at the next corner, Water Tower Gardens, you can look out across both the canal & railway line now entering the ancient city. There's a slight deviation from the path of the original wall here, as You pass Queens School, but once your back on track you then pass Chester Racecourse on the site of the original harbour! The path then takes you back to the car park where there is a nice little cafe & loos!

What's not to like about Chester? Loads of historical buildings and Roman features, fabulous riverside to walk along, and you are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out. Shops are a mix of boutique and general High street shops, and the Rows are a unique feature in the shopping area of Chester. A walk of the Roman walls around Chester is a great way to see all sides of this fantastic city.
