King Charles Tower, also known as the Phoenix Tower, is a 13th century addition to the medieval walls. In the 16th century, the tower was repaired by the city's Guild of Painters and their emblem, the phoenix, is carved above the door. During the siege of Chester in 1645, the tower was used a battery platform with a artillery piece on each floor. Reportedly, King Charles viewed the defeat of his troops at the Battle of Rowton Heath from the tower, but there is little evidence to support this. Several historians believe he observed the battle from the nearby cathedral tower.

Can only be visited from the outside, not inside

In my opinion this is the most beautiful of the towers on the city walls. It looks particularly dramatic when viewed from the canal below. The tower gets its name from the popular belief that King Charles I watched from here as his army was defeated at the Battle of Rowton Moor in 1645. The tower has rarely been open when I've visited though on one occasion I did get to see an exhibition of Roman archaeology here. There's a viewing platform in front of the tower but if you climb the steps to the first floor entrance you will get an even more spectacular view of the cathedral and its green, the canal and the city - that is if the gate is not locked!

Circumnavigated Chester Walls so many times. Highly recommended. Good views. Can be narrow in parts. Well worth walking.

I am quite interested in all aspects of the English Civil War and would really like to get more information on this site. What on earth is going on with the people who are meant to be advertising the city of Chester when they can't even be bothered to publish opening times and information on this site. I suggest they move aside and let someone who is interested do a better job!! Is it really that difficult to post information about this site so tourists don't waste their time visiting somewhere which isn't available to view. Get a grip you people who are paid to promote Chester!!

Located on the north-eastern side of the city walls. There are a series of steps leading up to the entrance to King Charles Tower. Although entrance to within the tower itself is not permitted, you do get a good view from atop the stairs leading up.

No admission fee to walk the historic walls of the city, some amazing views of the city below. Does get high at certain points so be aware if you have young children that may be afraid

Brilliant, you can feel the age, easily see/imagine the Roman soldiers milling around. King Charles stood at this Tower and watched his army defeated in battle nearby. It's free, you can walk around the whole city Wall's for free.
