My campus recreation center. Best place to release stress during semester and get to access the entire facilities for free. Love the drop-in-classes, the pool facilities including sauna, spa, and steam room.

I live in the Greektown area and unfortunately this is the only large fitness facility with basketball courts within a 2-mile radius. For $95/mo, it is not a great value. Because UIC operates a complete monopoly, they have no incentive to change. Machines are outdated, dumbbells have likely not been replaced since 2008 (facility opening), everything seems to be broken, and the facility is always dirty. Currently, two of the four basketball courts are unusable and management has not made any attempt to repair the courts in over a month. I have expressed further frustrations to management in the past, and they just seem to always brush things off. When you walk into this facility, you will not feel particularly motivated to work out. It’s a shame that UIC has no interest in improving the experience for students or community members, because a solid rec center really makes a difference in people’s mental health. Ultimately, I do recognize that at the least, it is nice that UIC offers facility access to community members. Also, I realize that the times are tough, and it is probably hard to staff the facility with cleaners, as is. But, end of day, we all deserve better.

Love the climbing wall here it has courses and routes for all skill level. The pool and lockers rooms are rather dirty and sometimes smell absolutely awful. The lifting area upstairs is wayyyy too small for the amount of student UIC has. It is consistently packed and if you want to lift you're going to have to wait for a machine to be available. The workers are nice usually and the smoothie bar is very good but expensive.

Wish I had discovered this place before my final semester of med school! Incredible facility with a wide array of programs. The sauna/steam room are very well maintained and rival the facilities at much more expensive gyms in the city.

2 stars for the Incredible facility. Has everything you want…except cleanliness. Such a shame to have this place to use and there’s no pride taken in it. It’s literally ALWAYS dirty. Pic doesn’t do it justice.

Great membership prices if you are alumni of UIC or UIUC or UIS. 6 months minimum membership duration is the only downside.

Excellent facility. Swimming Kickboxing and gym are my favourite. You can also check your fat %. There is a badminton and basketball court inside. Also a quiet place for meditation and yoga. Machines in gym are superb, perfect muscle contraction. They also give towels if you forget yours at home for free. The staff is always taking efforts to keep the place clean n hygienic.

It is small. Shallow and you can not dive. People from the gym come to the swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sauna, and no shower before. People from outside walk inside without taking their shoes off. It is not neat. Not hygienic place.

Usually there's dust everywhere. Sometimes the bathrooms smell like they haven't been cleaned in a month. A lot of students don't wipe down their equipment after use. I wish they had more machinery. I'm always waiting for a machine to be open. At least they have a track, basketball hoops and a volleyball net.

This gym rocks! From top-notch cardio equipment to dedicated boxing zones, it's got everything to crush your workout. Love the massive rock wall and relaxing sauna too. A student gym that truly covers all bases!

Squat rack can't even get plates on the barbell because a support beam blocks it from being put on

This place is a fitness enthusiast's dream come true! The state-of-the-art gym equipment, swimming pool, and indoor track cater to a wide range of workout preferences. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the cleanliness and organization of the facility are commendable. Whether you're a student or a visitor, it's the perfect spot to stay fit and healthy.

Good facility, missing one or two niche pieces of equipment to be perfect. The only downside is the locker room smells worse than an army portable shower facility (if you know, you know). They need to improve ventilation and dehumidification in the locker rooms.

The facility is immaculately maintained, clean, and roomy. As a student, the one disadvantage is that benches are rarely accessible because they are always in use.

The facility is very well kept, clean, and spacious. The only downside as a student is there are hardly ever benches available, since they’re always being used.

Great place to swim laps and relax in the pool. Has a great gym and fun activities during the year. Worked here for a semester and the summer. Staff is verey friendly and cooperative. Although the facility is free for UIC students, its available to patrons at a cost of subscription. Hygiene is maintained and Covid protocols are followed.

4 star rating but minus 1 star because the rec center is closed too much. When it’s not closed some areas are off limits because the sauna or jacuzzi isn’t working. Please maintain the facilities better to prevent issues and increase the open hours.

Old and outdated gym. All the bars are slick and management cares more about spending on useless equipment. Spending close to 20k on a Olympic Eleiko platform bars and weights instead of buying new bars. Perhaps management should look at their priorities a little closer.

Large facility, some machines are worn out, would not recommend going between 5-7pm, insanely crowded. Staff is great and very helpful. Lighting in the gym is pretty mediocre, lifters know the importance of good lighting.

As an alum, I enjoy the perk of working out here for 10 dollars a day. The parking lot needs some work, though. The indoor facility is cool. It's just funny that they have vending machines with unhealthy snacks. What's the point of working out if the snacks are gonna put the pounds right back on? LOL!

I think some of the people posting negative reviews may not realize how great this place is by college gym standards! Enormous, tons of free weights with 4 squat racks, indoor running track, basketball courts, climbing wall, not to mention the aquatic area which is practically a water park (lazy river, hot tub, etc). There’s a gorgeous view of downtown and great natural light. Yes, sometimes during peak hours (4:30-7:30) you have to work around other people to get in your workout. It’s really not as bad as most gyms though. One suggestion: more hand weights in the 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 pound range... there are only a few sets in the entire gym, and people always hide them away for endless amounts of time, because they’re so hard to get your hands on.

  • 4/5 Andrew G. 5 years ago on Google
It's a very nice facility, especially for a university. If they added a few more squat racka and benches this would be a 5 star review

I go to this gym solely because the location is convenient for me. The alumni membership is too expensive considering the condition of the gym. There are always machines out of order, they are randomly closed, the machines are not wiped down by most people after use and it’s not enforced. The black and red mats are never wiped down and when you do wipe them down before use the wipes are black. The black mats are so old they look like they’re crumbling. The machines are dusty, the revolving entry door is filthy, the showers aren’t regularly cleaned, the locker room lockers are dirty I don’t even like to set my stuff inside. Last week they ran out of clean towels because their machines were broken and they didn’t send out an email about it. This morning they were completely out of WIPES on the gym floor. The gym was packed and there were NO wipes to sanitize machines. That really sent my frustration over the edge. It’s a shame because this gym has the potential to be really nice and the students/paying members deserve better.

Clean and friendly staff, sometimes too busy on the weight lifting floor and not enough equipment available. Has a disproportionately high number of cardio machines.

Courts C and D of SRF seem as if they have not been cleaned at all since the start of the fall semester(maybe once?). It is insanely filthy with dirt and dust; it no longer has any grip whatsoever. This is a safety hazard, as it amplifies the chance of serious injuries occurring during play. Simple dry/wet microfiber mopping would make a big difference. The sanitation of this center has dropped overall within the past year. As a regular attendant of the SRF gym I find this disheartening. Overall I would rate 2.5/5 if I could.
