This is an amazing place, not only the home of the BBC TV show The repair shop also our history of how things were made and how we lived and changed with the times. All the staff here are helpful and very knowledgeable, they pride them self's on having over 400 volunteers. Great place for the kids and plenty of open spaces. On site cafe had home made food on as well as a great selection of gluten-free and vegan options. The cakes are wonderful, and they sell local ice-cream again they have a vegan option too. Can't praise this place enough ☺️.

I love this open air museum, it definitely benefits for a visual learner like me. The pond was beautiful with sunny weather. The staff and volunteers were very knowledgeable about the buildings. The most amazing thing is that all buildings have been dismantled then rebuilt it with the original materials and the buildings are still function for example the Carpenter workshop and the dry brick area!!

Great day out at the museum ! I love the repair shop Tv show so it was so brilliant to visit the set ! The guides are so friendly and knowledgeable about all the barns and houses ! Can definitely recommend a visit 😊 I didn’t know this place existed before watching the shows ! They need to advertise more ?

Excellent day out with the family, lovely setting with lots of interesting buildings scattered around to explore. Most buildings have experts inside to give you a bit of history. Allow about 3 hours to explore but could stay longer. Recommended for kids of ages.

From the visitors' centre to the buildings themselves, not forgetting all the really genuinely helpful, smiley and knowledgeable staff, this is a lovely, interesting place to visit. I just wish we had been able to see all of the "exhibits" (which are spread out over a quite large area of beautiful countryside with well-tended paths), but my (82 y.o.) Father was feeling tired...we will be back...but without him 😊

An incredible museum of past rural working and village life, properties and lots more. Preserving our history and run by a great informative friendly enthusiastic team. Worth every penny of the entrance fee and a great day out for all ages. Lots of areas to picnic as well as lake side cafe and educational centre.

I love this place. Old reclaimed buildings from Medieval period onwards. Architecture and History and set in the beautiful rolling hills of West Sussex. All the people at the exhibits were warm, friendly and extremely knowledgeable about not just the buildings but the people who lived in them, it's a rich social history. You come away grateful that we have advanced so much and homes have double glazing instead of wooden bars. The cafe is great too.

A stunning location, covering many acres, most open fields but a fair bit of woodland. Many houses and other buildings lovingly removed from development areas in the south east and carefully relocated at the museum. Clean and modern cafe/shop/loo buildings at the entrance do not seem out of place.

An array of wonderfully historic buildings, equipment and farming gear. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. The cafe serves great sandwiches and the ducks are very friendly. The mill is fantastic - I highly recommend buying some freshly milled flour whilst you're there.

Stunning history. Was mainly going because of the TV series 'The Repair Shop", but it ended up being a very interesting visit. I love when a nation preserves their identity and culture. Very well done and an excellent way to lose some calories. Very nice people, they love to tell you about their history and past time stories.

I have visited the museum from a child and have always really enjoyed a day out here. There is so much history to experience and loving the outdoors it is a great place to be. I think the cafe is really good aswell. We mainly enjoy the picnic spaces but there is a great selection to eat and drink (good oat meal latte and vegan cake) and the staff are friendly. All the staff and volunteers are very knowledgeable and helpful. A credit to the museum.

A wonderful place to visit and go back in time to admire the architecture of old. You could easily spend all day there. You can buy a daily ticket or an annual pass. You can take your own food and have a picnic or there is a café. The staff and volunteers are friendly and informative. There are also plenty of parking spaces available. I would recommend anyone of all age groups to visit as it's interesting and educational.

The museum has curated such a wonderful atmosphere, my son and I go pretty much weekly, as the annual family membership is such incredible value. The charm of the museum never dulls, and come rain or shine it's a wonderful and safe place to unwind. You also can visit the care without paying entry, and the chicken pie I had for lunch was absolutely divine. Home cooked, and exceptionally filling. Being a member offers a 10% benefit at the café also! Staff and volunteers are excellent, with great knowledge not only of the buildings themselves, but of the times the buildings would've been used, and the human experience that shaped the architecture, building and location of each historical landmark. We been at least 8 times this year already and there's still so much for us to explore! We are really looking forward to attending the museum for some activity days in the summer.

Wonderful day out to step back in time - see persevered original buildings from the surrounding area, along with knowledgeable volunteers and crafts people who work in some of the buildings. Dogs are welcome (on lead) but aren't allowed in some buildings. There are plenty of things to see, lots of lovely walking routes, a nice cafe and shop Ample parking and toilets. Everyone we met who worked there was super helpful and friendly. As an added bonus we had a Morris dancing demonstration when we went 🙂 (oh and of course, it's where they film The Repair Shop which you can visit of they are not filming.

A wonderful collection of historical buildings, most of which have someone on the door who can explain the history of the building which really helps to bring them to life, so much nicer than just reading something off a placard on a wall. We had a ticket with entry from 1:30pm and we stayed on site until closing which also included a stop for a coffee in the restaurant which was lovelly with some nice views over the lake. A great place for the whole family, although be prepared for lots of walking.

You need a whole day to appreciate everything, so get there early! Take drinks with you, as the refreshment vans close before the main Cafe & if you are facing a hot day & are still exploring you could have 1½ hours without a drink. Staff/volunteers are amazing, helpful, knowledgeable, hard working & welcoming. It's dog friendly, but be aware there are chickens and ducks wandering round. We found parking easy, and there are portable loos dotted about that are well maintained. The houses are just fantastic, collections, displays, working life, living..... Inspiring & fascinating. Well worth the money. We saw where TRS is filmed but as they were actually filming, we're not allowed near it. Children & adults alike will love it. Thank you for a smashing day.

The Weald and Downland museum is truly a special place, bringing a bygone era to life. We spent a good 4 hours taking it all in. Everything is fascinating, and the attention to detail is impressive. We were struck by how little house design has changed over the centuries!

Fantastic place to visit 10 out of 10!!! Visited the Repair Shop Barn. (You can look in through the doors when they aren't filming). Well set out. Friendly volunteers on site. We watched different activities that were going on.. Good cafe. Lovely cup of latte. We enjoyed it so much that we brought membership tickets. We will be back.

This open air museum offers a insight into how people lived in the past. There were staff there demonstrating how bread was made and tasted the day I went. It's a very scenic place and things to do for all ages.

An excellent museum. There is loads to see here, so very good value. The people here are friendly and informative. It's a unique place with houses that have been saved and rebuilt. It's a history of how we have lived in England since Saxon times. The talk and visit of the Downland Gridshell was excellent. This is an amazing building and the visit of the store below was fascinating. The only one criticism was the quality of the sandwiches in the café, which were a bit dry and possibly a day old. Overall a super place to visit.

It is literally incredible to see houses rebuilt from centuries ago....it really captures the agricultural period. The falconry display was wonderful and we learnt so much as well as watching the birds in action. It was a brilliant demonstration. In fact, everyone involved in building, preserving and creating the exhibits have done a marvellous job. All staff were friendly helpful and professional.. We just can't wait to go back!

Weald & Downland Living Museum was one of my first favorite places to frequent after moving to the UK. The museum has a wonderful collection of various traditional buildings and construction styles used around the surrounding area. It’s an adventure for all ages with tranquil paths throughout the museum. If you’re lucky, the bakery may be open with a fresh batch of baked goods to purchase.

Museum of old buildings. Big site with good access and plenty of footpaths. Good cafe/restaurant too. Great place for families or couples alike. Lots of volunteers to give information about all the different buildings, all of which have been rescued and rebuilt in the grounds. Deserves at least half a day or a leisurely full day to appreciate the whole place. We bought a yearly pass so we can go back and enjoy the place in the different seasons throughout the year. If old buildings interest you it is well worth visiting.

We visited mainly to see The Repair Shop as it was an open weekend. I've never been here before apart from to see an open air theatre production and a classic car show so never had the opportunity to have a proper walk round. There's a lot to see and I didn't manage it all during this visit. The preserved houses were fascinating, especially as each one has a volunteer inside explaining more about each one. There is a nice chilled out atmosphere here with plenty of places to stop for refreshments. There could do with being more benches to sit on and rest, especially for those who might find all the walking more of a challenge. The tudor kitchen was open which was particularly interesting and love the wood smokiness, you really feel like you are back in time. I hope to visit again to see more.

I absolutely loved it 🥰 beautiful countryside in a lovely area. Amazing buildings restored to their former glory, interesting, lovely lake full of ducks & a beautiful café & shop overlooking the water. The volunteers are lovely & very informative. The highlight also was the repair shop & meeting Dom & the Teddy ladies, lovely & obliging. Well worth a visit for all the family. Thank you 💜

Great place with a large area to explore. Sad to see the amazing trades and skills that are slowly disappearing, nice to know they are being preserved in some way. They are doing a fantastic job of conservation here which is duly supported by other activities. Added bonus to see the 'Repair Shop' set from the TV series (non-filming day). Large cafe on site with a great view of their lake. Large amount of parking and space for motorhomes to park.

We had a lovely time with our 4 year old. I haven't been since visiting with my parents when I was younger. Lots of interesting exhibits and the volunteers are super friendly and informative. Lots of outdoor space to stretch legs and have picnics. The only minor disappointment was that the ice creams had ran out!

Absolutely fantastic day out. So much to see and some nice activities for the younger visitors like Table Top Jousting. Fun to watch even if your not taking part. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The facilities were clean and plenty of picnic seating. We love to watch The Repair Shop so seeing the barn was very special. I would highly recommend a visit.

Visited on 7th July. We would need another two visits to see it all. Great facilities, toilets, and ice cream outlets spread around site in Shepherd's huts. Lovely welcoming staff in them and the girls serving in the Cafe. Not so welcoming was the older male on the admissions counter (maybe he thought we were too young to ask for Senior concessions I'm 68 and my husband is 67) and the female volunteer in the museum. Very hot day and gravel path became a bit hard to walk on after a while. We would recommend a visit to all.

We were warmly welcomed by the volunteer staff as we made our way around and they were happy to share their knowledge with us. We had a relaxed day and learned a great deal. It is dog friendly (except the mill building) though there are steep steps in a number of properties. We hope to go back and revisit as there is a lot to see.

My friend and I decided to visit on a Saturday afternoon, during school holidays, to avoid it being very crowded, which worked! There's lots to see and it requires a fair amount of walking but is well worth it. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in history. There are lots of interactive experiences as well as people dressed in period costume, explaining how things were done in that era. Highly recommended.

Excellent day out, kiosk lady's service brilliant. The downland gridshell, very very interesting. Just one downside, cafe served drinks and cake only from 3 o'clock, would have preferred a little more choice. Not impressed with takeaway cups in cafe. However, will definitely come again.

  • 5/5 Catherine M. 8 months ago on Google
Great idea place to see historical building and crafts and the home of the “Repair Shop”. The kids had a great time with making origami mice in the school room, grinding flour at the mill, and watching demonstrations of flint fishing spear making and the blacksmiths doing their thing. The kids loved the mill the best, grinding wheat and being able to weigh our flour and take a little bag home each. The buildings you can go into and experience how people used to live in 17th/18th century Weald. Fascinating pieces ranging from transport to architecture to crafts. The volunteers more than happy to give us some real insight into the space they were in and loved that they were in traditional costumes, it made it feel very authentic. A great cafe on site with a range of hot and cold foods. A lovely shop with a great range of gifts. The Repair Shop was there but you can’t go in, you can stand from afar. They were filming when we went so couldn’t get close. All in all a great day out. We booked online to get the discount if you book before you arrive. Makes it more cost effective.

Lovely museum to explore houses and the way of life through the ages. I managed to get around well in a mobility scooter the paths are a bit deep with gravel in some places and i got stuck once. Got into most buildings and explored the ground floors using my cane, a bit tight with the scooter and the stairs were too steep for me but what do you expect from old buildings!?! All the guides were enthusiastic and knowledgeable, will be back again!

Great place to go. Beautiful landscapes and the museum really gives you a trip back in time. Children loved the play zone. We had to deal with some showers on the day but hey ho this is England and it is what it is!!!

Great museum to visit in a beautiful setting about the development of our homes from the 12th century onwards. All the people we spoke to in the houses were friendly and amazingly knowledgeable. Even learnt where the phrases "daylight robbery " and " a square meal " came from!

I had a most enjoyable day at Weald and Download living museum. I learnt a lot about the way people lived in centuries gone by. If I have a chance to visit again I will definitely go. Also had a lovely meal at the cafe. Thanks for a great day.

A really interesting place to see authentic houses and buildings that show how people lived throughout history. Set in acres of farm and woodland, you can stroll at your leisure from exhibit to exhibit, many of which have a volunteer guide who can tell you about the building you are in. There are picnic areas and a cafe with an outdoor area that looks out over the pond. Of course, The Repair Shop programme is made on this site and although it is a closed set with no public access, you are able to get close enough to see the barn and outdoor workshop. There is ample parking and access for disabled and push chairs as well as dogs being allowed on the site as long as they are on a lead and well behaved.

Had a lovely time visiting and even met Dominic from the repair shop .. lots to do and see . Had such lovely weather with added bonus .. the food is limited not much for kids to choose from . The gift shop is way way over priced .. it’s like someone just picked out random high prices which is a shame for kids to spend their pocket money. They even sell present labels / gift labels just a small folded piece cardboard priced at £2.50 it’s a joke right !!! Like I said it’s way way over priced in the gift shop which ruins it . We signed up online via direct debit and twice had issues getting into the place making us feel like we wasn’t welcome first issue with Parkin then saying the system is saying we joined but the system saying they owe us money but we had our joining account number . Still not sure what the problem was .. very regimental in some ways .. other then that a lovely spaces place

Interesting place to visit. Some old buildings rescued and moved to the museum, interesting to see these buildings preserved plus seeing older skills demonstrated. Visited for a good 5 hours and saw everything, guides had good knowledge of the buildings. A good day out.

A very enjoyable day out, cafe had inside and outside seating but a bit of a wait for food if it was busy, no problem if you just wanted a drink and a slice of cake. Information boards were very good. Paths were mainly gravel or stony so I think they would be difficult/bumpy for wheelchair users

An interesting place to visit to imagine what life would be like in the past. From houses, furniture, gardens, farm implements, wagons, and not forgetting livestock, it's a great day out. The newer Gridshell building is a fantastic, organic piece of art. The venue hosts courses too. Again, highly recommended, especially the wood finishing course, tutored by Philip Hodge.

It was 45 years ago I visited here, it's only been open 50! Oh it made me feel so old, I was at primary school in Ashington at the time though. It has changed as houses have been added but the essence of the place hasn't changed. I love the fact that someone realised that buildings history was being wiped out and these houses needed rescuing. The details of how the buildings where relocated is fascinating. However, there are tools that carpenters used centuries ago that are still used today. Cafe was very busy I think they needed more staff behind the counter to make drinks but saying that they were lovely staff and the food was excellent. A thoroughly enjoyable day out, a well organised museum, with knowledgeable staff and volunteers.

I would give six or seven stars if I could! This is a fantastic day out for a history buff like me. Fascinating reconstructions of old buildings, workshops, etc. And lots of them! If it is a nice day, do the sculpture walk through the coppice woods. Excellent value for money.

  • 5/5 Catherine M. 2 years ago on Google
Fantastic that these very old medieval buildings have been rescued from destruction so that we can understand how people used to live. Really learn a lot here from the information. Loads of green space, lake and paths. Not easy to push a wheelchair along upper path unless you are strong! Nice cafe by the lake, visitors centre with great info. Possible to spend quite a lot of time here as there are so many things to see.

A brilliant day out for young and old alike. A great concept focused on preserving our heritage. Eg. Finding old historic properties in danger of collapse or demolition and rebuilding them using the traditional methods of building. Housed in one of these buildings is TVs famous Repair Shop!! You will love it!!
