What I thought first that I would like most about the Fredericka Manor was the fact that when I first came here I thought it was like a small village. It felt like a small town, but a real neighborhood. And I thought I’d really like that. And then when I discovered Old Chula Vista (which is our immediate neighborhood ) I really liked that because there was a small village and I thought that would be the main thing. But it turns out that the main thing is the kind of atmosphere, the ambiance, the personality of the place. And not only the staff members… the staff members will help you at everything. I just was stopped by a guy who was in charge of the plant and gardening and so on. And he’d stopped me –I’d never met him, but I talked to him on the phone a couple weeks ago–and he stopped me and said “if you need help with that project” (he knew the project, he knew who I was ) “you know I’ll make arrangements”. And when we finished talking, he said “and I have I have some tomato plants if you got a late start.” And everybody’s like that. If I called up today about a couple of work orders and some advice and all the people showed up or called back immediately. And the residents are all friendly. They all seem like they’re glad you’re here. And I talked to my wife about that – why does that happen? And I think it may be because we’re all approximately the same stage in our life and we’ve all made the same choice. We’ve chosen to come here and we feel good about that and everybody’s just friendly and helpful. So the most important thing really is the people. – Frank Marini

My parents currently live here, and have for a little over a year. From the time we first visited to check them out... to the time they moved in... to now a year later, their experience has been wonderful. The grounds are lovely and quiet, it is very convenient to many services and they have several living accommodations to choose from. From the tower, to casitas, to smaller apartment buildings there is something for everyone. There is round the clock service and security so for family, there is a big peace of mind that comes along with elderly family living here. My folks live in the two story apartments, with a lovely little patio. They have their own smaller dining room that they go to every single night in their building. There is also a puzzle room that my Dad spends a ton of time in. They have tons of services, and the residents are very involved in activities and the overall community. My Dad loves teaching his weekly class, it keeps him sharp and he loves to share his knowledge. You know, when my folks needed to get out of/sell our family home for various reasons it was a HUGE adjustment. Fredericka Manor really made that adjustment bearable for them.

First off I would like to say that the staff here is amazing, they make you feel like you have been living here for years. Every morning they greet you with a good morning and a smile. They really go the extra mile to make it feel like home, whether you've lived here for years or just moved in. My mother has lived here for 5 years in a wonderful cottage. Her and I have enjoyed all the different activities like, Bocce Ball, their little golf course that is set in a beautiful area alongside some cottages, exercise classes, walking around the pond, bus tours for residents to a multitude of San Diego attractions, the library, the computer lab, and much more. My mother was quite nervous when she first moved in but do to the outstanding hospitality from every single one of the staff members and everything Fredericka Manor has to offer in regards to care for their customer and activities she has kept healthy and saw this as the best decision she has ever made.

I moved from the San Francisco Bay Area 3 years ago to Fredericka Manor and I couldn’t be happier, I have a lovely cottage with a garage and a yard. There are so many activities here that you can not even take part in them all but I enjoy all that I do, I take 2 exercise classes each day. I take walks at Chula Vista Bay Park to be near the water once or twice a week, I enjoy bocce ball, I’m in the choir, ballroom dancing and line dancing. We are steps away from Third Avenue, a business area that includes restaurants, a tea shop, a bike shop, a community theater with excellent plays. Fredericka also has buses if you do not want to drive to go to many events, San Diego symphony, theaters, grocery shopping, as well as many San Diego attractions. The amenities and staff here are amazing, we have house keeping come twice a month, gardeners, and a maintenance crew that helps us with anything you might need. Fredericka Manor is like living in a small village, most people here are very interesting, well educated, well traveled, with past interesting careers. Our dining room has beautiful views, our residents family and friends love to be invited as a guest and enjoy a meal.

My father moved in to Fredericka Manor Retirement Community 4 years ago and he is so happy! Most important to him was having a roomy cottage and a garage for his car and motorcycle. He loves the beautiful grounds with plenty of walking areas, a pond, rose gardens and a beautiful community vegetable garden. It's great peace of mind for me to know that my 82 year old father has such a full and happy life at Fredericka Manor.

This place should be shut down for the poor care and negligence. My mother in law was here for a couple of weeks after her fall and got no care. When we will visit all the nurses didn't have nothing logged of her food intake and medication or stool. The nurses were always on their phone and took forever to attend the patients. Its so sad that people that are hired to care for our loved one dont care. Now my mother in law is suffering and we are helpless with this situation. Please dont send your loved ones here.

This place is so poorly Run. It has gone way down. We have been coming here for years, but now the person in Charge yells and Screams at people and the Doctor cannot be bothered. They are over run with ants and they do not answer the Call lights. They stole my clothes and Said it was my Grandson's fault! Horrible service and Treatment here, I will Never return. This place is a Dump!

Beautiful grounds, wonderful place to live. My mother was staying there, clean and for the most part friendly. My mother was left without power one night. She was afraid, being in complete darkness, and activated her emergency Pendant, with no response from staff. I called staff and was informed they would bring her a flashlight. I was informed that once her emergency Pendant was activated, staff would respond and if no response, the Executive Director would be notified if he was anywhere in the world. I don't believe that ever occurred, because staff only was aware of my mother's situation due to my personal phone call to them. Staff said the emergency Pendant was not working probably due to the power outage. Very disappointing! I have since emailed the Executive Director several times and have yet to have a response from him. I was later informed he was on vacation. Weeks later and no response. Medications were an issue. I was informed by staff that there was only two staff workers working at night and were probably busy with the other residents. That is understandable, but maybe adequate staff should be hired to accommodate seniors living at Fredericka. Fredericka is such a peaceful place to live at. I think if they correct future staffing issues and plan for power outages it could be a "5" star place.

I agree with dv4. My grandmother spends a lot of money to live here and they are negligent. She is supposed to get her meds through them and they went more than a month without getting them to her. She asked over and over; they just made excuses. Some of the receptionists just ignore the residents when they need help or arrive for appointments. We have been keeping a long list of problems and will be making a complaint soon, too.

In response to Owner's reply to my posting below: Did your “safety protocols” take into account that during the Covid lockdown, my mother lost over 20 pounds in just a few months (she was only 4.8!) and NO one noticed her meals were returned uneaten, or bothered to weigh her periodically? Because we weren’t allowed in to see her, we had no idea she was barely eating. We TRUSTED and were paying your company to care and protect my mother…but you didn’t! My mother lived at Frederica Manor for 6 years, in the assisted living Tower. In the early years, my Mom needed very little care, other meds management. She was a stroke survivor but could get around on her own and was fairly independent. My Mom was a great cook and very sociable. One of the things she and we liked best about FM was meal time – a buffet option was available which my Mom loved so she could see the food, colors, etc. and choose what she liked. The dining room staff for the most part was very friendly and helped her feel cared for (there at least). At the start of Covid, FM took great lengths to ensure their residents were safe (and more importantly, we feel, to minimize deaths affecting their “reports”). Unfortunately and sadly though, to the point of total isolation. Other than caregivers coming in to give meds, assisted living residents had no contact with people. Of course, we weren’t allowed in either so that made it even more lonely. Their meals were left at the door….. like a prisoner in solitary confinement! Near the end, we had to get hospice in to provide additional services…. although some were things FM should have been doing but didn’t. In many ways, my Mom died from isolation, more than her physical health. What was most disturbing is that when she died, there was NO call, email, card, nothing from the Executive Director – the same one that had been there all 6 years and knew my Mom! They were good to take her money every month but not even a lousy sympathy card. Completely heartless. If you want compassion, in addition to necessary care for your loved one – go somewhere else! p.s. Good thing they shut down the Rehab Center (or sorry, the “Care Center”). My Mom spent 6 weeks there of pure HELL!!!
