If you are interested in coins and banknotes from ancient Ceylon/Sri Lanka to the present, then please visit this small museum. It is operated by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the ground floor office sells some interesting publications. The museum is located on the first floor and again there is nothing to promote it. The displays are interesting but I just didn't have enough time to closely look at the exhibits. There is no real signage and parking is a huge problem.

The central point building which currently being used as the national economic museum controlled by the central bank of Sri Lanka was the tallest builing built in 1914. South Asia's tallest lamp also being placed in this building. The first floor of the building is now utilized as the economic museum and the ground floor, there is a shop where you can purchase publications of central bank of Sri Lanka. The reason this building named as the central point is that it is located beside the Chatham Street light house which is the landmark considered as Colombo when measuring distance for towns/ villages.

THE CENTRAL POINT BUILDING The Central Point building, with its stately Corinthian columns, large window panels, circular glass dome, and marble cladded interior, which continues to add lustre and charm to the landscape of Colombo. This picturesque building was designed by Walker and Adams, Architects and construction was done by the Ralph McDonald Company. It was opened in 1914, as the branch office of the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia Limited, an Insurance company based in Australia. It was considered the tallest building in Colombo in 1914, and in the decade following. Today, it would undoubtedly be a construction that many historians would find of immense interest and value, as it exhibits a blend of cultures, traditions, lifestyles, customs, livelihood activities and architecture took place within the bustling coastal city. In 1973, the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment of Sri Lanka (CWE) acquired this building from the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia Ltd. In 1996, its interior was very badly impaired as a result of the massive terrorist bomb blast that occurred at the Central Bank premises, and had been in a highly dilapidated state until 2011, at which time the Central Bank acquired it from the CWE. Immediately thereafter, the Central Bank started the restoration of the building, making every possible endeavour to preserve the architectural and archaeological value of the property, while also giving it the name “The Central Point Building”, as it is known today. The new name suits agreeably, as the building is located opposite the historic Clock Tower of Colombo, which is considered the “Central Point" of the island's road network. As a tribute to the architectural, archaeological and economic importance of this historic building, the Central Bank has established the first ever “Economic History Museum of Sri Lanka” at this celebrated landmark. - Communications Department, Central Bank of Sri Lanka

This is indeed a historically important place for a developing country like Sri Lanka. And I respect the fact, people still value their origins and the past.

This a little treasure for those who are enthusiastic on the history of economics in the world and specially in SL. This museum is located just opposite to the Central bank and it has a collection of coins going back tho the ancient days of our kings. For my surprise the entrance is free for this place. You have to just enter your details in the front desk and you can pay a visit and get an idea on how the cash notes and coins are printed, and the notes and coins of different periods. Also if you are a cash notes or coin collector, some notes and coins are available for purchase as well. The Economic history museum is open on all weekdays except government holidays from 09:00 to 13:15 and again from 14:15 to 16:00 O'clock.

This is a coin museum which as a collector I found fascinating Good information as the exhibits reflect the various stages of Sri Lanka's history although there aren't a lot on display Great place to spend an hour, it's on the same street as the Colombo Fort Clock Tower and a short walk from Galle Fort rail station . Combine with a look at the beautiful old colonial buildings and the crazy busy street markets nearby Bars and cafes close by free entry

Economic history museum was disappointing. However the currency museum was good but not that well maintained . Old coins were covered with some kind of fungus and some of the lights inside the show case were not working.

Owned and managed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, one can learn as well as obtain elaborate information on the history of money in Sri Lanka in this museum. You will also also get a chance to see and learn how money is printed, various stages of money printing and coin minting and also security features embedded in currency notes in circulation in Sri Lanka. The publication unit of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka is also situated in the ground floor of this same building, where you will be able to purchase periodicals and publications. The building itself is a masterpiece of architecture, restored to its original form which it was in 1914.
