Karagampitiya Subodharamaya has a history extending from the reign of King Parakramabahu VI of Kotte [(1412-1467 A.D.)Β Embuldeniya, 2014]. During this reign, a village called Medimala (Nedimale) had been offered to the Natha Devalaya at Pepiliyana (Chutiwongs et al., 1990). At the time, the western part of this village was occupying by the fishing community and hence that part was known as Karagampitiya. In order to banish enemies and to protect the fishermen in the village, the king had erected a Devalaya at the foot of a Na-tree located on a hillock of Karagampitiya (Chutiwongs et al., 1990). However, this Devalaya is said to be destroyed by Portuguese and its stone pillars were brought by them to construct the Saint Anthony's Church at Mount-Lavinia (Chutiwongs et al., 1990).

Important archeological site with many historic buildings. However, incumbents are interested on building new structures rather than restoring old. The varanda in the one of the image house was littered with dog poo coz temple gotta Dalmation as a pet 😜. Main living quarter of the monks and relic chamber are painted with gold paint which is horrible. I do not know how people are not sensitive for these things. Furthermore, white paint is stocked at both old image house and pirith hall ignoring their histiric significance. White washing of them done carelessly where paint marks run across old painted lettering. Apart from negative comments, wall murals at the image house are must to see. They are beautiful examples of sourthern style of temple paintings. Pirith hall or the chanting hall gotta permanent chanting ensemble made out of wood which is further decorated and painted. Ginger beer bottle at middle, may have used for containing water, for chanting. If u are arrive there on a mid week, make sure u request, to open them for u, coz they are always locked. Last but not least, wooden flower altar and ceramic mosaic work on the floor are out of this world. Happy sight seeing guys!!

An underrated historical landmark in Sri Lanka. Filled with beautiful paintings dating back over a hundred years done in the time of kings. Recommended for anyone who is interested in history, art and architecture; but it can be enjoyed by anyone.

An archaeologically protected temple. The image house and the preaching hall are great for the students who study about Kandyan era paintings.
