Great all round views from the top of this lighthouse. There are two levels, if you chose to go upto the second top level, make sure you have a good head for heights. It's a narrow tight staircase and little space to move around at the top. Additionally the railing around the top barely reached waist level for me. It would be all to easy to lose your balance if you lent over too far and fall. Keep back from the edge. Great views out to sea and across the old town. You can pay the small entrance fee in either Argentine or Uruguay Pesos.

What a handsome thing. The entrance ticket costs 1 USD, I had with me a 100 banknote and the ticket lady wasn't able to give me change. Pity, wasted opportunity.

I went to visit Colonia for the afternoon so I could renew my 90-day Visa for Argentina. Booking a round trip on Buquebus was very easy to get to Colonia. Yes, Uruguay is more expensive than Buenos Aires! However, you can still pay with Argentine pesos in Colonia and DO NOT NEED to convert your pesos. The price on the check at the restaurant I ate at worked out to be the same no matter how you paid. Colonia is very old and a great place to walk around for a few hours and learn about the history of this city. There are a lot of places to eat and also to buy souvenirs. It does not take more than a 2 or 3hrs to casually walk around to see the historic parts. They have done a great job at preserving it!

Beautiful medival architecture, I love it. If someone like this theme I really recomend. What to do here ? walk to the streets, sit in coffe house arround the city and waiting for sunset. Here you can back to past to 1920, because on the streets are a lot of old car which inside have table to keep the coffe. Awesome

One of the must go places when you are visiting Colonia Del Sacramento. The light house in itself is very beautiful with a different design, most of the lighthouses are cylindrical in shape but this one is rectangular at the bottom and cylindrical at the top. We have to pay a nominal amount to go inside around 30-50 peso per person and they will allow very few people at a time . You will be allowed to go to the top rectangular part of the lighthouse first and then after sometime they will let you go to the topmost part and the view from there is breathtaking . You can see the whole Colonia from top of the light House .

It's ok you have a nice 360 view but you have to pay 60 pesos to go there. PS: It's really tricky to cross with someone else in the stairs. Better not be claustrophobic

  • 5/5 Fahmi J. 9 months ago on Google • 95 reviews
You can climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse to see the overall view of the old city.

Nice old colonial town, there are a lot of bars and restaurants, you can climb the lighthouse, walk the original streets and spend easily half a day waiting perhaps for the ferry to Buenos Aires. The old town is situated just a few blocks away from the ferry and bus terminal.

The gem of Colonia del Sacramento which offers an excellent viewpoint from it’s peak. You can pay roughly 50 argentine pesos to climb up to the top, but it’s well worth the spend. The sweeping view across the shoreline and historic quarter are breathtaking. As a side note, it is a tight climb up, for those who are slightly claustrophobic. Additionally, it is high so do not look down if there is even slightly a fear of heights!

Great views and worth the climb and small cost. Look south to compare the view of tall buildings in Buenos Aires from the top to the view from the shore, a great illustration of the curvature of the Earth.

(Translated by Google) Imposing, worth seeing! Enjoy it! You climb a fine staircase, the view of the bay of Colonia del Sacramento is impressive! When the river is low, the city of BS AS can be seen more clearly, which is about 40 km in a straight line through the Río de la Plata. The entrance is super cheap, about a dollar. (Translated by Google) Preserved, historic lighthouse of Colonia del Sacramento, known locally as Colonia, capital of the department of Colonia, in southwestern Uruguay. It is located on the north bank - left - of the Río de la Plata, 177 kilometers from Montevideo and off the coast of Buenos Aires, Argentina, from which it is only about 50 kilometers (in a straight line). It is located on the cape formed by the points of San Pedro and Santa Rita. Its Old Town, the historic quarter that encompasses 12 hectares at the western end of the city, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1995 illustrating the successful fusion of Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial styles. The plan is of Portuguese origin and contrasts with the standard prescribed by Spanish law on the West Indies. It is characterized by its narrow stone streets, which highlight its military tradition.
