Waited for over 4 hours in the emergency department only to have vitals and blood work taken then was sent back to the lobby to wait along with like 12 other people. Nobody came to check on us. We kept overhearing very in consistent wait times. One of the medical staff said that we should be lucky we aren’t waiting like others who have been there 13 hours waiting to be seen or for a bed on the main floor. How can you humanely make people wait that long especially when they are in pain or ill. After waiting so long we left and went to OhioHealth Riverside and have had a complete 180 degree experience. Everyone is kind and medical management always checking on your needs. Will definitely be going to Riverside for future treatment.

The emergency room is a hit or miss. The last four times I’ve been there staff have been rude and so have the doctors. They don’t get much time to talk to the patient which makes it hard to get diagnosis. Always too much confusion between the attending and the students. One says one thing and another something else. I feel like they are all extremely over worked, but if they can’t handle the job they should quit. I feel bad for some nurses they look exhausted but still showing compassion and doing their job. There really is not much staff here to keep up with the Columbus area. Such a sad situation. People also dying in the waiting room it’s been a terrible scene the last few times I’ve been there. It gets so crowded, hott, dirty and smells awful.

Got to the ER at 9pm. Wasn't seen until 2:30am. Got to leave at 6am. Was tachycardic the ENTIRE time with shortness of breath and chest pain. Whatever it was stopped about 30 minutes before I was seen. Doctors chalked it up to anxiety. I have had anxiety for 6 years. This was not that. I got to ride out a medical emergency in an uncomfortable chair for 5 hours only to be dismissed by medical staff.

I had open heart surgery 6 days prior and I was rushed out of the hospital after 4 days without the proper therapy by the PAC. Needless to say, had some severe leg pain so I went to OSU ER. First, filthy...bed arms were covered in blood. When I asked the nurse to wipe them down she told me either way it is not good for you as we are not to touch the wipes without gloves because they are made of harmful chemicals. OSU makes enough money to keep the hospital clean or they should really get out of the business. Second, the doctor and nurse responsible for me did not schedule any tests to check for the obvious, blood clots. After waiting in severe pain for 6 hours I finally had my first panic attack in my life(thanks OSU, would have been happy without that). I removed all my heart monitors, the oxygen monitor and got dressed. No nurse checked on me in this 25 minutes of alarms blaring. I had to hit the call nurse button to get anyone. This is when this circus clown admitted he had not even scheduled me for a CT scan on my legs. He even got pissed when a better doctor told him what needed to be done. I decided at this point I would rather die comfortably in my bed than to stay longer, however, I permitted this so called doctor to convince me to stay a few more hours. After 9 hours of complete failure of my care and what I am sure will cost me thousands of dollars, I checked myself out after the nurse told me I should feel privileged because they lost two patients who had just had heart surgery like me in ER. Such an utter disappointment! Later I was told it can take 1 to 2 days before you are admitted to a room. Please explain why we cannot call our issue in and be placed in a queue until that room is ready? At least there is a level of comfort. Personally I would rather die in my bed versus in a dirty room, with a subpar doctor and nurse who would not even know I was dead until a shift change. OSU really needs to implement Tier care in their system. If someone has surgery with OSU they need to ensure they always take any follow up issues with the dedication and seriousness patients deserve. If you value your life do not go to OSU ER.

Strong contender for the worst emergency room in all of Ohio. A family member faced complications after having surgery a few weeks ago. We faced an excessively long wait (7+ hours) despite being in contact with the surgeon prior to arriving. A truly horrendous operation overall. They have a questionable priority/ranking system in place. At one point while waiting there was an older lady who was expressing that she was having trouble breathing. One of the nurses told her that she was fine because she was still able to talk. This seems to be the area of the facility that they invested in the least.

Received more information from the nurses than the doctors in the ER. Mother was admitted from ER after 24 hrs, 1 doctor seen every six hrs during that time. After being admitted for "Outpatient observation" (which if you left it would be AMA and insurance would not pay), unless you hunted down a nurse nothing was done, not even changing bed sheets. 1 of 2 possibilities, either they have an extreme lack of medical professionals (which would shock me for a medical teaching facility) or they are milking insurance companies for overnight stays....either way, they need to do better.

I wish everybody that has a negative review has ever shadowed or worked in an ER. We're not allowed to share why someone got taken back before you, they could be very sick and just not show it. That was the case when I worked in an ER. LSU does a great job making sure everybody's taken care of with the severity of their symptoms. Sometimes you have to wait a long time. There's a lot of sick people, it's not just you. You just have to be patient and know that someone might need something more than you at that moment. It's a hard truth, but, there's a bunch of people in this world beyond your nose. I give them an A.

I’ve got a lot of praise for OSU. They saved my life. I was there for most of the week and all of the doctors and nurses were great and very informative. I only really had an issue with one doctor who discharged me prematurely without following what the previous doctors had recommended, which resulted in me returning. Aside from the one doctor, everyone was great. I got referrals to people I needed to see and got on a treatment plan that has resolved the issue so far. I was also able to call back and speak to ED nurses when I had questions. The only thing I would say could be improved significantly is the wait time. I was there 7 hours before seeing a doctor. I’d recommend going to a clinic or something similar if you’re not facing something life-risking. Regardless, the wait was worth it to finally get help from some of the best medical professionals I’ve personally come across.

4 hours in the waiting room. No one has been called back for over an hour. Have watched several people leave. Employees seem disorganized and unconcerned with patients. I've watched a paramedic sit on a desk laughing with coworkers behind reception desk for over an hour. Very unprofessional. The lack of consideration for patients time and comfort is astounding.

I have been an OSU patient for 10 years, I have always received exceptional care at the hospitals, doctors offices, outpatient centers around town, I have several doctors and specialists, and different therapy services I use at OSU because of my complicated chronic health problems. The care I had received at OSU main campus emergency was the worst care I had ever received. I had complications after an surgery I had earlier in the week at OSU, I was brought in by ambulance from an different hospital emergency where I was receiving fantastic care. I was left on an gurney in an hallway for over 6+ hours at OSU ER, when my surgeon is who transferred me there saying I'd have an room ready upon arrival. I was examined in an used dirty trauma room then put back in hallway in front of nurses station, the bathrooms & hallways were dirty. I watched fights break out in the hallways between police, patients and doctors, other patients saying they'd been in there ER rooms for over 3 days. I was lied to by doctor's, some nurses were completely unprofessional & rude. This is not proper patient care, I was so disappointed and angry over the lies told to me, the risk of infection I put at when I have an compromised immune system fresh from surgery, the conditions of the ER & and danger surrounding me that I left "AMA" from the hospital and refused to go back to their ER!! Step your game up OSU Emergency, it's ridiculous. Also complained to my doctor's office about my care few days later, I was told I'd be contacted by patient experience, but never received call back.

Good shuttle service available from parking garage every 5 minutes Good experience at the reception explaining or guiding with right direction to view the patient I couldn’t view the patient though due to patient code not being available with me. They advised it’s patient confidentiality to not allow viewing or visiting the patient or confirm anything about patient. I had the patient family in India and was worried to know about patients safety or awareness about patient- couldn’t view though 😔 or they said couldn’t find the patient in the database.

They set up your IV in the waiting area in front of everyone and sit supplies on unsanitized seats🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢. Blood drops on the floor🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮. Grossest hospital I've ever saw in my 45 years. My son had a tooth absess they sent him home with pain meds and antibiotic although tooth needs pulled they left him in discomfort due to no insurance. This place would get 0 stars if there was the option!

Horrible experience! Took my sister las week because was very sick and with a lot of pain on her lower back and started getting a rush on her leg. First of all we got there at 12pm we registered her and she waited for 7 hours in the lobby to be admitted (7 hours), she was crying in pain and we kept asking for at least a pain pill and nothing. When she finally got a room the resident came with such a calm, check the symptoms and said is probably just a muscle and the leg "i don't know "did you change detergent? We said no so only gave her pain medication, then the doctor came and said the same thing. But this point the pain started going away because of the medication and they let her go. The next day she woke up still very sick and in pain so we took her to riverside looking for answers. She had an "infection on her kidney" and the rush was "shingles". I always had the idea that OSU was one of the best hospitals but sadly they are far to be. Very disappointed, they were playing with my sister's life. Please do not take your love ones there.

If I could leave no stars I would. I visited the ER one evening , the nurse that took vitals was nothing short of very unprofessional. I explained to her that I had a detached Retina and she put in my chart derogatory statements. she needs to be turned over to OHIO nursing board. Her opinion does not matter. Once I saw the Ophthalmology resident, I told him i had a detached retina, i had one before so I knew . He did a bunch of eye test and a retina fellow read it telemedicine. The fellow on call should have come in and looked for himself you can not make a proper diagnosis from an uploaded image. He stated there was no detachment (WRONG) . This Fellow needs to be thrown out of the program. I went to another eye group in Cincinnati , wow I had a detachment . Amazing that an institution this large has such terrible care and training of a Fellow in such an important field. Sad thing is, I got billed for this missed diagnosis and terrible service from nurse . DON'T GO HERE

My Mother who is a Cancer patient spent 13+ hrs in the ER before having a CT scan. Not to mention she waited the whole time in the hallway. The amount of cross contamination that I witnessed while waiting made my jaw drop. This staff definitely could use a refresher course on infection control. Not to mention they’re rude and condescending. What I really want to know is if the young nurse named Kayla speaks to her mother the way she speaks to her patients. She is young and has many more years of work ahead of her, I do hope she learns a better bedside manner in the years to come. Sincerely, A concerned Daughter of patient

5 hour wait with a patient in congestive heart failure. At 2 hours, she was complaining of feeling worse. I went to the nurse and asked what was happening, suggested that we could leave and not have to wait at another hospital. His response was "why? She's only been here 2 hours. " I couldn't believe it. Then he scared her into staying. Three hours later we are still waiting in the hall to go to another room to wait for a doctor to see if she can be admitted and then to wait for a room. I know that hospitals are short staffed and emergencies happen constantly. But something should be different. 10:53 just got moved to the room to wait for the doctor....

This hospital has a lot of patients and emergencies, so waiting isn't a problem for me. They know I'm there for a specific reason or I'd be at home. I don't abuse the ER like some people do, for pain meds and a quick fix, I usually wait until I'm dying or my doctor sends me in. This hospital is the best hospital I've ever been to. They have done all my surgeries and saved my life more than I can count on both hands! The doctors and nurses are always kind and swift and check in on me when they can. They will aso do anyrhing in their power to make sure you comfortable and have a way home, if they send you home. I will never ever say one bad thing about this hospital. Thank you to all the staff at OSU Hospital. -Starr Lynn Mayes-

My husband got transported there from licking memorial hospital because he had 2nd degree Burns from working at his job they had no beds for him so he had to sit in the hallway of the emergency room.Nobody after they released him took him out in a wheelchair or anything else didn't give him the treatment that he was supposed to get. Didn't help him to the door in a new place had no idea how to get out. Thought the staff was very unhelpful. Would never recommend that emergency room to anyone.

Went with severe stomach pain. They told me to wait for 3 hrs. I got fainted in the lobby due to severe pain. Then they took me inside to take blood and return me back to lobby. Again waited for 1 hr with severe pain. Then got a bed and nurse informed that there is no doctor available at the moment.I waited again for 2 hrs with pain and then I leave without seeing doctor. Please don't go to this emergency. They are the worst.

Beware! Before you check in to the emergency room ask how long the wait is and if there are any beds available. Oh they come out and immediately take you back for tests. I went in for chest pain and headaches. First they did an ekg and blood work then sent me back to the waiting room. Immediately took me back again for x-rays and back to the waiting room. While waiting for 5 hours I learned that people ahead of me had been there for 13 hours. I felt so bad that I couldn't sit there any longer so I left and plan to go to Riverside.

The absolute worst experience I've ever had in an Emergency Room. My Mom had a thoracentesis performed the day before in the Main Campus and came back the following day as she was told her pain deserved emergency attention. We waited for 4 hours in a dirty, full lobby, with nurses who were rude, inattentive, and unconcerned about the care and well-being of the patients they were there to serve. We ultimately left and went to the East branch and got in, spent 3 hours there where multiple tests were performed on my Mom only for her to be taken by Ambulance back to the Main Campus, where at least she got a room and the doctors in the morning. That Emergency Room deserves to be remodeled, or at least renamed, and I could suggest a few names but they are about as impolite as the nurses and staff we had the displeasure to meet. I would NEVER recommend this Emergency Room to anyone, and I will certainly mention this experience to everyone I know in conversation concerning the James. For Shame!

I came here at 7am and was immediately whisked to a room and nurses and doctors helped reduce my stomach pain within 5 mins. I got taken to get a scan it transpired I had kidney stones. The staff seemed to check all the "I care" checks however they seemed slightly distant. But again they helped me and I'm greatful.

If I could give ZERO stars, I would. Triage rooms were DIRTY, staff unprofessional. Waited over 5 hours for them to only do blood work and vitals. I am 3 weeks postpartum, having gallbladder problems and high blood pressure and chest pains, still got no help… there was a guy w a broken hip, he got there before me and waited longer than me … I would not recommend unless you have TIME and PATIENCE

Worst experience of my life. You will wait all day and still not get a room. You will watch as any and everybody coming in after you gets treated before you. I would like to thank Ohio state for treating their students with care (not really) they do not care about the patients In the ER. If you come expect to be In a hot waiting room with no ventilation as everybody coughs a lung out.

Came here for my mom after she got into a car accident. The nurses are rude, inattentive and just didn’t care at all. We tried to get the nurses to come help her, she was in a lot of pain one of the nurses said they would be back in a minute but an hour later nobody even checked on her and when they finally came in they had move my mom’s leg for x-rays and she was screaming in pain, I heard nurses laughing outside of the room. I saw a nurse give me a dirty look. After my mom got her surgery done at 10 pm they couldn’t even get her nothing to eat till 4 pm! Worst hospital I’ve ever been to and I won’t be coming back. She stayed in the James.

Went in the other day for a non-Covid problem, they have me wait in the waiting room multiple times, the same waiting room with Covid patients coughing, even sat me next to one ! they didn’t even bother separating the Covid patients from the others, I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up having Covid from this visit. The lobby is a cesspool for Covid, expected different from a hospital. Staff were nice though.

Absolutely have no words for my experience. I arrived last night around 10pm extremely sick, throwing up profusely and shaking. I remained like that in the waiting room puking into a throw up bag for four hours. I never got called back the entire night and ended up just leaving the emergency room at 7AM, NINE hours later. The people there were completely unhelpful and rude and I would avoid going there at all costs.

I took my ailing mother recently on 9/1/ 2023, in the emergency room of James cancer hospital in Columbus,Ohio for second opinion of my mother’s stomach cancer diagnosed by Ohio Health. But shockingly, I found the nurses are very rude and incompetent to accomplish such noble profession as nursing. My mother had excruciating pain and almost dying. Indeed she expired after 5 days of that ER visit. I told the lady nurse to give her a comfortable chair coz my mother was having the worst pain coz of uncomfortable sitting in the wheelchair. The lady nurse on duty on 9/1/2023 around 10:00 pm yelled at me and my sister when we asked to give a better chair to keep my dying mother. The other male nurse did the same thing to my sister who was accompanied my mother in the ER. I had the worst ever experiences in that ER. I think we the citizens of the most powerful nation deserved better facilities, care and attention for the patient like my mother. Particularly I am talking about 2 nurses one male and other female (I didn’t know their names). These two nurses are brute and discriminatory. They don’t deserve to work in the James cancer hospital.

Came here for a rabies shot with my kids. Spent 4 hours in that dirty place waiting for someone to administer the vaccines. Had to come back a few months later because I had a period lasting 20 days of intense bleeding. The midwife I was seeing urged me to go to OSU ER because they were from the OSU group and could see the results plus they had all the gynecologists down in the main campus ER. When they collected some blood from me, I had to sit in a bed with blood droplets from someone else. And now that I'm anemic but not so much that I need a transfusion, they want me to go back home with the same problem I came. The doctors told me that figuring out the problem was not their job. It would be my personal doctor's problem. Great. Thanks for the huge bill and not solving my problem. I'm very frustrated. I also forgot to say that I arrived at 3pm. It's now 9pm and I'm still waiting for someone to discharge me.

When I say I would never I mean never come back to this ER, I was transferred to this ER from another ER where I was told that the OB team was going to be waiting on me when I got there for me to have to have been seen in the ER again when I had already spent 5 hours in another ER. When I got there they had no ETA on when someone would see me knowing I had just had an hysterectomy and a open wound. I sat there in this nasty place where people had been there over 6+hours and still no one was coming to get the patients, there were people with IVs in their arms in the waiting room and not in a room. The staff had no sense of urgency when it came to people who came in. I feel like if I was a drunk or someone on drugs then I would have been seen right away. Even when I told them I was in a lot of pain they didn’t do anything. This ER is poorly ran and I would never come back. I love the rest of the hospital but this ER no thank you.

Was sent here by wifes cancer Doctor. Can not say enough good about them at The James or Martha Morehouse. With that said, the ER visit was HORRIBLE. Over 6 hour waiting. Saw people come in way after us get treated first. They were not critical. I believe they forgot about my wife until I brought it to their attention.A LOT of workers just sitting around , laughing and haveing a good time. Nobody was doing anything. We will NOT BE BACK, and can not recommend this part of the hospital to anyone!!!!

The only reason they get 1 star is because there's no such thing as a no star rating. I was there for 3 hours, but I was lucky because I could leave. While I was there.. 1 man in his 70s had been there for 8 hours 1 80 yr. Old lady was there for 4 hours 1 lady in her 70s with intense kidney stone pain was there for 3 hours. These were the people that got to know out of 14 other patients. When I told the guy at the front desk that I was leaving, he said, "I can't tell you when they'd be ready for you. We're doing our best. Your best? If this is how OSU runs an emergency room at peek efficiency, they should just shut it down.

Husband had cat scan for severe pain after colorectal surgery. Abscess was found and were told to go to Ermergency room. 2 Hour drive to Columbus. Arrived at Emergency dept. They drew blood and took blood pressure. Sent him back to waiting room. Still sitting here after 3 hours. Asked if we could go to car and be more comfortable and they could call our phone when they were ready. We were told no. May leave but afraid it could be risky for his health .

I had to go to the emergency room because of inconsistent vision problems. I met three amazing people who made a depressing situation, feel as if the sun was shining for the first time like I was seeing the sunshine for the first time. I met Terry, Chyna and Elisabeth. Initially I felt like I was going to start crying but after meeting them I felt so much better. I also felt like I have more hope. They made me feel like I was a human being, and not a number. Also, my doctor was very thorough and kind hearted. When I was anxious, she was patient with me and set me at ease. This is a great hospital to go to if you want to experience a team of people who respect you, are kind to you and have a great sense of humor.

Waited 7 hours to get no treatment. Staff was terrible, tests weren’t ordered until hours after they said they would. After not eating all day and being told not to drink fluids due to future testing it made me feel neglected. They never even gave me an idea how long I could expect to wait either. I have a kid at home and they just acted like I’m okay. Now I’m at home in pain no idea what to do but after that I’d rather risk waiting for my regular doctor and hope nothing too bad happens in the mean time.

I really expected better from OSU and their staff. Truly disappointing. Security treated us like criminals before letting us in for treatment. The officer at the door was a pushy jerk who would be better suited as a prison guard than an officer of the law. YOU sir are a perfect example of why people think so poorly of police. The nurse made me feel like we were a bother. We had to listen to a drunk yelling the whole time who was being treated in the middle of the hall rather than in a room. We never even got a diagnosis. Pathetic and disappointing. You should all be ashamed.

It’s absolutely horrible how people including myself have been here since 9am and still in waiting area. You are not that short staffed. I’m not here for myself but I see what ppl say about how OSU treat ppl differently due to insurance or other concerning issues. My daughter just asked about her room AGAIN and was told the average wait time is 8hrs. What the hell how the hell is a wait time to see a doctor 8 darn hours. This is why I go to Riverside because this place is a joke. And the bad part is the ppl are being seen by STUDENTS. So 8hrs in the waiting room and another how many hours once taken back. This place is a joke!!!!!

A previous review I wrote got taken down because I accused the staff of being reckless with their care. Which is true, just look at all the other reviews. In my particular case, my rn gave me an anti-inflammatory injection, shortly after I told him I couldn’t take any anti inflammatory medications. Plus they refused to give me opioids when I had both a shattered tibia and wrist. The resident who initially examined me I'm pretty sure was trying to break my leg even more. This was before I demanded he order X-rays to see that these bones were broken. Even still he didn’t have a clue what to do. BOTTOM LINE: GO ANYWHERE ELSE YOU CAN!!! THIS PLACE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR LOVED ONE!!!

I wish there was a zero star option. On March 18, 2022 I went there because of a small injury with bleeding. The man at the reception (not a doctor or nurse) told me they would not help me. I checked in and was told no doctor available. Waited for one hour and no doctor appeared. Then I asked how many people were in front of me. The man said that the number doesn't matter and it's not like in a restaurant, but without further explanation. I gave up and left there. I am telling my story not to complain; I don't care about this unhappy event at all. I am telling the potential patients. If you need emergency care, think twice before choosing this hospital.

DO NOT GO TO THIS ER!!! It is always extremely crowded, you will have to wait several hours to be seen. I just ended up leaving and going somewhere else. You would think since they have so much staff that you would be seen pretty fast, but no. Most of them were just walking around and not really doing anything. And the building is huge so you would think they would have some rooms you could stay in while you’re waiting, but no, you have to sit in an uncomfortable chair in the waiting room, if any chairs are even available. OSU is supposed to have some of the best medical care you can get but it did not even come close to living up to that reputation. Just go to a different, smaller emergency room unless you are literally about to die because MAYBE then they will pay attention to you.

For such a renowned hospital this ED is terrible. I’m interested to know the max occupancy in the tiny waiting room, as it is not posted. Zero people were called back the first 1.5hrs we were there. People lined up in wheelchairs in the halls. Soiled blankets all over.

Horrible experience….for such a large hospital, the waiting area is so very small….the process was humiliating and unacceptable. I can’t imagine treating a human being like we were treated. No one’s loved one should have to suffer the humiliation we did in their patient intake! The staff was caring and compassionate, but whoever the powers to be planned their er area should have to suffer like those that need their services in a transplant hospital. I’ve been in many emergency rooms in various hospitals and never had to wait 8 hours or more to receive care…. Never never again if I can help it will me or my loved one go to this er…we had no choice since our loved one needed to be treated in a transplant hospital but I will be checking out other transplant hospitals in Ohio after the experience we had here, it will forever affect me.
