It’s interesting, yes. Gives a unique experience of the times and the stories behind it. Lots of the jail is closed off, would be nice to be able to see some of this as the curated rooms are very clean and almost inviting (much like the jail would not have been). Could be a little more gritty and real rather than manicured. Also access to all the top floors were closed due to damage apparently so we didn’t get the great views. There was no eta on when they would be open again. The staff however were absolutely fantastic.

This place is in walkable distance from Fitzgerald park via Shaking bridge. The entry fee for adults is 10 euros. It is good place to experience the feel of jail. Can click some good photos. Can spend 1-2 hour in this place. Have a good car parking for few cars.

The Cork City Gaol was one of the best attraction I visited in Cork! You can discover a lot of things about what happened in the last two centuries and you can also have a lovely tour around the beautiful building. Everything is clear and well-organized, so you can easily do your own visit without the guide. I would come back again, because my experience was amazing! The price is quite cheap (10,50€ adult - 8,50€ student/senior - 6€ children under 18) and I recommend it to everyone who is going to Cork. The guided tour start every 30 minutes.

This was a pleasant surprise. My expectations were fairly low, but we’re exceeded. This is a very cool walk through an old structure that has a pretty rich history. There are life size figures throughout and a number of interactive audio visuals. There was a small gift shop with snacks etc in it. This is indoors and outdoors with staircases. It can be a bit chilly indoors as it is all stone. There are bathrooms inside. Fun place to check out if in Cork.

Highly recommended. Free short term parking outside enough time for visit. Sad but interesting history. Lovely grounds. On top of hill with views of Cork

Great value for money. It's well laid out and the storyline as you navigate your way through the jail brings home what people endured, for little to no crimes at all really. Lovely architecture and the grounds are beautiful. The staff couldn't have been nicer as well.

Purchased tickets in advance and had a brief wait to check in. We had a great time on our guided tour (2pm daily) - guide was very knowledgeable and provided great context for things and stories about actual prisoners who stayed during the years it was in operation. Parking available right outside front gate. Very cool architecture to see up close. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Cork.

One of the best place we’ve visited during our trip to Cork. I would recommend getting warm clothes because there could be cold inside rocky walls. It was very pleasant to find some guides in Russian (and many more languages)! We have been in many places around the island but this is the first one which has Russian in their guides. Thanks a lot, very thoughtful highly recommended 👌 😀 👍 😊 👏 ☺ 👌 😀

Had a very good time at this historical site! It is well set up, the map with information they give you is great and the audio guide (for additional 2 euro) was somewhat beneficial but I found the pamphlet provided gave enough information if you want to save a bit of money. Would recommend!

Never been inside a jail before so this was a first and unique experience. You are given a paper guide which is very informative and easy to follow. When you enter the prison there is also someone you can ask questions and who shows you directions Each point of interest is marked with a number which makes it easy to follow and referring to the paper guide you able to read up about the event. What stood out was that even young girls of 10yrs were jailed here for petty crimes. You also have an opportunity to go into a cell which is rather small. Towards the end there are some exhibits and an interactive quiz where you able to learn more about prison life and what was made by prisoners Once you done inside you able to walk around the outer walls of the prison and view the small courtyard prisoners walked around in ,their only form if exercise

A brilliant trip to the past with this fascinating prison. Walking through the cell blocks was very immersive and makes you understand what historic prison life was like. The staff were very helpful and the prison was big enough to spend over an hour in. Going on a Tuesday made it less busy which was a benefit but I'm sure it wouldn't be too packed on the weekend either. If you're having a city break in cork, it's definitely worth going to this incredible prison.

It's an interesting museum and a beautiful building with a small, well kept garden. On the second floor there are some interactive games to play.

A great place to visit and see the history of the place. There's an audio selfguided tour, but it is an extra €2 but is full of information. My 9 year old was laping up the audiotour, which was a suprise. Keep you eyes peeled for the ghoul on the children level of the gaol 👻. There is even a bit at the end of the tour dedicated to the first Cork radio station that was transmitted from the gaol in the 1920s. It is definitely worth a visit. We used the cork tour bus, which goes around the whole city, and you can hope on and off, which makes it really easy to get to when you have children in tow.

I visited on a weekend and bought the ticket on site. You can purchase ticket with paper guide or they have audio guide as well. I went for the paper guide because it was cheaper and pretty much everything is written in the leaflet. They preserved the jail in 19th century and has prisoner’s name and statues in the rooms. It is described in the leaflet as well. If you love history, must visit. They have a little projector room when you reach the end. I was amused to read the prisoner’s story and to view how the jail looked like back then. In the first floor, they put something like a horror story with lights. I was pretty scared to look at it. I would recommend to visit the jail.

Very interesting. Worth the 20m walk from city center. Self guided with audio 21 stations. You can see the outline of the original jail. It was circular until expanded to look more like Kilmainham. Exhibits give a good feel for what it must have been like.

This is definitely recommended. The tour itself is clear and easy to follow at your own pace, and really makes the stories come to life. We were greeted by a lovely staff member named Shauna who welcomed us and told us everything we needed to know. The location is central and easily accessible and the building itself is stunning.

Nice visit, but so absolutely cold. You can go up the stairs in the gaol, which you can't do at others like the one in Belfast.

Went to the Easter egg hunt. I personally think it’s not a very suitable place for children activities. The mannequins are very realistic & one particular cell had a 9 year old child being beaten by a warden & had blood running down his back from being whipped.

  • 5/5 Tanguy W. 1 year ago on Google
The experience was amazing, been there with a friend of mine, we really enjoyed it. The audioguided is really well made you learn a lot about the history of the place. The biggest room full of stairs and cells is beautiful, I won't say that I would have enjoy to be imprisoned there but I must say it's great! Must do if you are in Cork!

Came here early in the morning and had the prison almost all to myself. It's well worth a visit and the staff was really, really nice. They also offer an audio guide with great narration which I can recommend as it makes the experience more complete.

Enjoyed visiting this old prison. Was fairly extensive, and many locations had very lifelike "occupants"! Had not originally planned to tour here, but decided to stop and see it. Only 4 stars because I was not too interested in seeing a prison, but once inside was interesting!

Worth a visit! they have done a great job in synthesising an engaging and stimulating historical narrative for the prison turned museum.

Great experience for all ages. Crazy to think children were held to the same standards as adults and were held for petty crimes. They’ve done a nice job restoring areas for the public to view.

One of our best experiences in Cork. It’s a very immersive visit with stories of real inmates told through the headphones with the choice of multiple languages. The building is really beautiful and clean. The staff were helpful and friendly too.

Really fun museum and certainly worth the hike up the hill to visit. I wish there were more focus on it as a women's jail, but overall it's a great spot.

Enjoyed my visit to Cork city Gaol, chose the self guided tour. There was a map provided. Each viewing point was numbered & the map provided gave details of the history. History was presented very well and all staff were so pleasant & helpful.

The Irish word for Jail is Gaol. This prison dates back to 1824. The gaol closed in August 1923, with all remaining prisoners either released or transferred to other prisons. This prison once housed not only men, but women and children too. Children were arrested and locked up for months or years for theft and other petty crimes. The museum is a really cool way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Nice place for holiday. I was invited for a small party. As I've never been here, it impressed me. From outside looks like medieval castle. Inside reminds American movie's jails. Cells occupied by maniekens, representing ancient prisoners. They can be mistaken for alive. If you are going to be accompanied by a guide, it will be the best exhibition. Recommend to visit 🏰

a short walk away from cork city centre and certainly worth a visit. we had a tour that was about an hour long and contained interesting stories about some of the inmates, the type of food they ate etc while the jail was running. you can walk around the grounds and see the ruins of the debtors jail and old jail hospital. you can walk into some of the jail cells as well and even see graffiti from the old prisoners. there's also a small radio museum inside the jail. a good place to visit if you're interested in history.

The Gaol is a great morning out. They always have something on to help engage the kids, be it a story teller or quiz with prize at the end. It has a really interesting history. Note part of this is on the second floor with steps up so take that into account when visiting. Cannot recommend highly enough. I have gone with 8 year olds and 10 year olds.

A unique historic and audio guide experience. Allow 45mins to 1 hour. Works well as part of a 1 day Cork visit on foot if you prefer to tour without public transport.

  • 5/5 Daniela H. 1 year ago on Google
Ticket costs 10€ for adults (8.5€ for students). It's a good place to know about the history of the Cork. Ticket comes with a map of the place, everything well explained, signs everywhere. It is a big building sonypu can spend about an hour there. There is also a small giftshop inside. After visiting the building you can walk around the gardens.

We (a late 30's couple) enjoyed our trip here. We went on a Saturday and it still wasn't too busy. It's worth paying the extra couple of euro for the audio tour. We spent a couple of hours here, including the Radio Museum and found it value for money.

  • 5/5 Sandra B. 11 months ago on Google
Took the tour to hear stories of why the prisoners were there. Most were petty crimes, understandable during those times...a place to sleep and food to eat. Nice tour...guide was very informative.

This historical site receives high regards from almost who visit. While the grounds and buildings were beautiful, the historical site haunts with the retelling of those imprisoned here. So, while beautiful and impressive, it’s a saddening tourist attraction in my view. I suggest the audio tour unless you enjoy reading to learn about each numbered station. The wax figurines make for an engaging visit and retell the stories of those imprisoned here. Bathrooms on site… costs about $8-10 per person to visit. I’m
