Wonderful and clean with very friendly and helpful staff. The food is light and delicious. If you’re looking for healthy, this is the place. You start with a base of white or brown rice, or noodles, then add a protein, and then get to dress up your meal with a variety of vegetables and sauces. Any of the ingredients can be made into a bowl, tacos, soup, or wrap. It’s moderately priced around $9-$10 per serving. Would highly recommend if you’re in the Union Park Avenue area.

$38.70 for 2 small bowls of soup and 1 BARLEY filled bowl of noodles, steak, and corn!! These prices are absolutely ridiculous for such a small amount of food. The one in murray at least fills it up much more for the same amount. If you expect a good sized portrion of food for a reasonable amount, don't go here

I love the bowls. There's a vegetarian option, and you can choose brown rice for less processing. I love all the veggies and the delicious sauces. The portions are generous, but I'd rather make a second meal of it later than share! I don't recommend the beef, I don't think I've not liked it the two times I tried it. I'll stick with tofu or chicken. They have a great mix of sauces... it's called Tiger something. It's so fabulous.

I’ve been to every single zao and it was disappointing to be treated the way I was treated today. The staff on Sunday was absolutely rude. She was an older Latin woman and I never got her name but I gave her a $100 bill and she rolled her guys at me because I was paying in cash. Then she said next time if I ever pay for a meal that price I need to not have $100. She also rushed us while she was making the bowls and the portion sizing was truly a disappointment. If I’m paying for an 11 dollar bowl I expect more than an employee putting a singular cilantro leaf and literally 3 pieces of broccoli. After the super rude encounter we called her out and said we didn’t appreciate the way she treated us and she literally just continued to argue instead of taking accountability. One of the most disgusting experiences we ever had.

Why is this the only location that has awful portion sizing? I eat at Zao about twice a week, it’s my favorite. I visit several locations because my job requires me to drive around. I counted 4 tiny pieces of chicken in my bowl today - which is interesting because there’s a .75 cent surcharge on chicken at the moment. So charge more but give less? Come on. This has been a pattern also - not just today. It’s a pretty simple fix - if we’re paying $11 a meal, give what customers pay for.

I love a restaurant that lets me pick and choose things. My selection was delicious and I highly recommend this combo: Yakisoba noodles Chicken meatballs Wok seared vegetables and corn Yellow curry Cilantro and carrot daikon Peanuts Crispy onions Can’t wait to come back and try other combos!

Good service and employees. Food is average. I would not come back due to simplicity and ease of making it at home. No special taste to the noodle bowl. Good for a quick lunch when you have no time to cook at home. I can just simply buy materials and sauce and make it on my own. I just did not feel my money was worth the experience.

This place is great, I’ve gone twice now. The prices are pretty competitive with places like Cafe Rio, you can tell that the ingredients here are a little fresher. Workers were efficient. Star lost because one worker did not speak English which made ordering very difficult, and then when I had a question about which sauces they had later, he was unable to answer. I think diversity is great, but when a customer has a question, the employee should be able to speak in the dominant language of the area.

The food is delicious, the atmosphere is vibrant and stylish, and I am always fulfilled by going here. I like their menu model where your choice of meat is the aspect of the meal that is priced, and you can incorporate that meat into any of their 5 delicious options. My personal favorite (and the envy of my family who all got bowls) were the chicken tacos. Marinated chicken topped with carrots, lettuce, and cilantro gets a fresh kick from red Korean sauce and the chipotle lime aioli. Three tacos is plenty to fill anyone up, but the wonderful thing about Zao is that you leave full and refreshed, not like the bloated full you feel after a big burger. I'm excited to go back.

Good food. Have been here a few times since they opened. Kind of an Asian version of their Mexican counterpart next door. You pick the base (noodles, rice, or sandwich) and then select a protein and what you want on top. Overall the food and service has been really good, but with so many "fast service" food options in the area I haven't felt this place is very memorable and I often forget about it. Good food, but not an overall amazing experience that I'm dying to experience over and over. Try it once and move on.

Line is rarely long and they can move you through quickly. I'm not vegan but when I got a vegan-type bowl and asked for crispy onions they were thoughtful enough to ask if I was vegan because they were not. Thanks!

Sooo, very, very delicious! We continue to love the bowl and the chicken tacos. Yum yum yum! We had never tried it before and tried it about a month ago, maybe more... we get it every Friday night or Saturday night since. The tacos are so ridiculously satisfying. Spicy, sweet, tangy and fresh fresh fresh. 😋 🌮🍲

The bowls are a generous size and can feed myself and 2 daughters, ages 4 and 2. Ingredients are fresh and consistently good. We like the teriyaki or lemon grass sauces best.

  • 3/5 angelsgirl85 1 year ago on Google
Food here is good quality, like other Zao locations. The service is much slower though - front and back prep don't seem to communicate well so you always have to wait for something to get cooked or get replenished. The staff seem to just go through the motions without any hustle or pride in their work.

Great fast casual Asian fusion restaurant. It is a build-your-own at the counter type of place, so you pick the basic framework, the protein, then the toppings you want and the staff builds it for you as you move on down the line. The fountain beverage selection of mixed juices is great. I always try them all and then fill up my cup with my favourite. The whole place is always clean and tidy, and takeaway options are easy.

I just bought a delicious looking bowl from Zao. I specifically asked if the noodles were Gluten Free. They spoke to each other in a different language and then told me yes they were. I second guessed them but I got them anyway. The first bite I knew in fact they were NOT gluten free. The language barrier was a little tricky, there were two things I said I didn’t want but I got anyway. Both guys were super sweet BUT with dietary restrictions and in the restaurant business they should be more careful.

This fits in that fast casual build your own category. Nice Asian inspired flavors for bowls, salads, taco, soup etc. Today I got a noodle bowl, steak was cooking up fresh so I opted for chicken. The builder misheard when I asked for “super sauce” a combo of their green curry and lemongrass sauces, and got tiger sauce instead. Decided to roll with it since sauces are not really something you can undo once they are applied. It was decent though I’ll likely stick with my usual going forward.

Food was great! My favorite base for the “make your own bowl” is the yakisoba. I just can’t get enough of those noodles! They also have their own variety of drinks including a mango 🥭 juice that I really loved! Overall Zao’s Asian Cafe is just a really yummy and quick place to eat! (they make the food really quick :))

Love the food. Came here because Cafe Rio next door has a long line that wasn't moving. We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food is. We've already come back again. Table was a little sticky. Even so, I'm sure we'll be back again!

Zao is one of my favorite restaurants! I love how quick it is to get your food and they have tons of vegan options. My favorite things to get are either the rice noodles with teriyaki sauce and veggies or white rice with yellow curry and veggies. I've had questions about their menu, so I've emailed them and they respond quickly.

Absolutely amazing food! I absolutely love the decor and music that really sets the environment here. Zao definitely doesn't skimp on good ingredients either! They let you know if the quality of certain veggies isn't up to their standards and what they have used to replace it until the quality gets back up! I definitely recommend this place!

  • 4/5 Christie W. 3 years ago on Google
So here's the thing. The components on their own are good, I just don't like this particular combination of flavors together. I wish there were more options for vegetables too. But honestly this seems like a solid place overall, just not for me.

Delicious healthy fast and reasonable. My biggest complaint is that it's too salty I think they need to reduce the sodium or have that as an option

I had a tofu teriyaki bowl that was delicious, especially the tofu. I do wish the carrots weren't cold. The mango drink I had was pretty good, just seemed a bit watered down. Still, I'll be back!

  • 4/5 Chris R. 4 years ago on Google
Great food, fresh, healthy, and a lot of options! Banh Mi, noodle and rice bowls, salads and soups. Better than Teriyaki Grill to compre it to another restaurant... more options, flavors, and much better! Ordered the noodle bowl with chicken, veggies and a sweet and spicy sauce, very good. Gave it 4 stars for only having one meal here I will be back.

This is usually one of my go-to places but tonight was just bad. I’m not sure if it was the yakasoba noodles or the tofu (or both) but the whole meal had a burnt flavor as if the wok flame was turned up way too high. On top of that, when I walked in there was an overwhelming smell of smoke/ash, almost like there is no vent in the kitchen and the smoke smell permeates everything including your clothes. Anyway it’s disappointing when basic expectations are not met. If you burn the food, throw it out. Don’t create a poor customer service as a result.

I love Zao! So many gluten free options and the staff have good knowledge about possible contamination. The person making my bowl happily put in fresh gloves when I requested it due to my high level of sensitivity to gluten. And the food is delicious!

Zao is usually one of my favorite places to eat. Well today I got the soup (which was my first time) and it was funky! There wasn’t any broth and it seemed like mostly just meat. The broth was thick and not very good. I am totally bummed! I tried to eat as much as I could cause I hadn’t eaten all day but I can’t swallow another bite. I’m so disappointed! It’s just plain noodles with meat and like 6 princes of corn :(
