Fantastic and interesting place. Highly recommend you visit and do get a guide. Well worth the $ 20 for a guide. Go in the morning when it's not hot nor humid. Take some bug spray for your clothes and bring water. You will pay twice to enter , but it still adds up to being only ten USA dollars total.

What a cool spot! You do have to pay twice to get in, but it’s not much, and the money goes towards maintaining the place. We didn’t get a guide as we wanted to go our own pace, but they are there if you’d like them. The ruins have information plaques so you can read about the history of them. The pathways are nicely maintained and there is so much wildlife around. Tons of different flowers blooming, and so many iguanas and lizards! We even saw bright blue butterflies flying around. There are so many ruins and you walk through parts of the forest/jungle to get to them. It was a hot day, but really nice in the shade of the trees. The shops are pretty nice too, with reasonable prices. Shoutout to Enrique, one of the shop owners, who gave me a cool pamphlet about the Mayan zodiacs and showed me which was mine (it was my birthday that day as well).

I have been to several other of the big Mayan ruins, so I was not too sure what to expect here. Was I pleseantly surprised with this site. The importance to the Mayan beliefs of fertility and being born are clear here. In fact life and birth are so sacred here that it was never a site of human sacrifices as many of the other Mayan sites were. I recommend paying the $20 for your group to get a guided tour and then exploring on your own.

This was one of the coolest things we did on the island! Admission was $10/person, but get a tour guide, it adds $20, but is absolutely worth it!! Request Fanny Gonzalez, she loves her Mayan ancestors and showing visitors through the site. We spent three hours here and walked the entire site. It was awesome learning about what happened here and why. There are vendors up front so expect to be accosted by those selling their wares. This site is shaded but it is very humid so bring water and bug spray. We rented a scooter in town and it was an easy drive out there.

Very very interesting. I was in Cozumel on a cruise and really was expecting just to lay on the sun and bask But a show excursion took us here. Learned a lot about the Mayan people and culture. By the tour guides admission, the signage dates back to the 1990s and a lot of new knowledge has risen since then. But seeing ruins from a millennium ago, generally still in excellent shape ... I love the culture.

Beautiful place! I'd highly recommend stopping by the guides table and investing in the "tour". We had Jose and he was fantastic. He really brought the site to life with his intimate knowledge of the place and insights into Mayan culture. Pro tip: BRING BUG SPRAY. I have never seen so many mosquitoes in my life.

TOURIST TRAP! Highly recommended to stay away from this place. They charge $7 per person entry and then an additional $6 once you get past the stores. After the first pay gate, mosquito repellent is up sold immediately, then after the second gate there really isn’t much to see. This is a replica of the Mayan Ruins, with mosquitos 🦟 everywhere. It’s at most a 20 minute walk. Not at all worth the entry fees.

While a mostly destroyed site, this is a must see! One of the only places the Mayans never did human sacrifices and is very unique. Take them to come here and don't rely on the signs, you will need a local guide to walk you through it all help you understand this rich history.

Definitely interesting to see, hard to navigate on your own. I’m sure a tour guide is worth it, but we only had limited time! Be aware that there are 2 different areas to pay. The total ends up being around $11 USD per person. Bring your own bug spray!!

Very nice walk through the ruins. Price is reasonable, as it is smaller. Little paths that take you to different ruins. You can spend about 1 hour here and you have seen everything. Please take mosquito repellent .

This stop was part of a cruise excursion, it was well worth it! The guides did a fantastic job explaining the history and significance of the site and its structures. Shops are out front, for souvenirs. I would recommend bug spray and maybe a bottle of water, but it's nothing more than a brisk walk.

I liked it. We went with a tour group from the Carnival cruise Line. Several people went to the Mian ruins. Then lunch, then the beach snorkeling. I enjoyed listening to the tour guide discuss the history of the ruins. I recommend going. Two thumbs up.

Very good information from our Mayan decendant tour guide. It was a beautiful day to hike along the paths and walk the 500m to fertility temple too. Nice archeological park

A great ruins site. Make sure you walk all the way to the back to the bigger structures. They are easy to miss and very worth seeing. Guides available but we choose to explore on our own.

Absolutely fascinating! Our excellent tour guide (Patti - has Mayan ancestry) gave a wonderful history lesson. This was a "must visit" for Mayan women to ensure successful childbearing and the only temple that had no human sacrifices.

Got to the ruins later in the day, not knowing it closes at 4 pm. Most of the area was flooded due to the heavy rains. However, what we got to see was incredible. Will go back and see the rest one day.

Was there about 10 years ago and had to go back. Largest group of Maya ruins on Cozumel. There are approximately a dozen structures and Maya roads that connect to the rest of the island. Entrance was $13 per person and I highly recommend having a tour guide! Miguel was our guide and was fantastic! He had many pictorials including maps and his knowledge was impressive. Plan on an hour and a half to two hours. Don't forget the sunscreen and bug repellent as you'll be in the middle of the Cozumel jungle. There are multiple gift shops at the entrance to purchase drinks, snacks, and gifts.

Last winter we went here and stopped on our bike ride around the island and it was even better than expected! A lot more to see and walk around and explore than I had imagined. So many awesome structures. I wish I had read up on it a bit more beforehand or even done a guided tour but that's usually not my jam. Would've been worth it had we started our bike ride earlier. If I went for a second visit I'd do the guided tour. Overall a great spot to check out.

Very interesting place to visit. Though there are lots of signs/plaques with good information, it's well worth having a local guide. Make sure to take a hat and, though I was OK, some people needed insect spray. There are a few shops to buy souvenirs, some are way too expensive (no movement on $10 for a fridge magnet) while others are happy to negotiate.

I am a tourist @ heart. This was my first time on a cruise and this was the excursion I selected. We were told at the beginning that this was not the big ruins. Everyone sighed. However the guide and the rich history of the ruins made this excursion a great one.

We visited over the holiday and enjoyed our day. Not nearly as large as others we’ve visited, but a nice place to explore and learn. We got there about an hour after opening and the grounds were still very quiet. By time we were leaving around noon, the cruise tour groups had arrived and it was much busier. And hotter. So, if you can, get there earlier in the day for a more peaceful, cooler experience. Bring water and bug spray as there is some walking through jungle areas and the bugs are out. It was also a touch muddy in spots, and we had to wash down our shoes after. All in all a beautiful place of history on the island!

We have been to many of the ruins but this one has such energy that you will not find any where else. Had an amazing guide. We usually scuba dive in Cozumel but I think we will come back here and spend more time.

Overall, this was a good tour. We chose this because we had a toddler and stroller with us. This was a fairly straightforward site. It took about 45 minutes to go through, and we had the option to hire a guide or walk the site alone. We hired the guide, and it was pretty insightful.

Enjoyable archeological site… not big and definitely not like chichen itza, but still very interesting and great walk in the jungle. This is great to spend 2 hours of your time if the weather is not great for the beach. Easy reachable with car or taxi or buses. Recommend to have a tours guide if you want to understand the history.

This was so cool!!! Our guide was Thomas and he was a WEALTH of knowledge! He did such a great job of explaining the Mayan culture. WE seem so primative in some aspects compared to this ancient society. Thanks, Thomas, for a wonderful day!

Nice natural setting. Our guide was fantastic and knew the natural aspects as well as the archeological. Was very quiet when we were there. A few other families but the place is so big it really felt like we had the place to ourselves.

I was expecting Mayan pyramids similar to what you can find outside Playa del Carmen. These are much more modest, and most of the ruins date from between 1200 and 1600 AD. Nevertheless, this staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Also, the shop owners were super helpful, especially when I was looking for a black men’s T-shirt with the Mayan god, Ix Chel on it. I echo the comments from other reviewers – bring mosquito spray! I was 100 yards down one shady path and my calves were covered in mosquitoes! Otherwise, worth the visit. I visited on a scooter and the long drive was really pleasurable.

Extremely hot, bring a fan, water. Mosquito repellent is a MOST. It is your genuine archeologic area! Beautiful area in the middle of a jungle. You are in contact with nature!!! It was a ceremonial site. Super peaceful and not too much traffic. Able to enjoy the place.

Great way to see ruins without spending the entire day plus taking ferry to Tulum. Tour guides are amazing and worth the money. Ivan was the best, super charismatic and informative. Friendly lizards everywhere!

We felt like everyone here was just trying to make a dollar.. $15 for a can of bug spray!?! They warned us that the mosquitoes were bad & that we needed the spray. No problem, but damn! $15!! They charged extra for a tour guide to take us through, we declined. They charge to just get in the door, then charged again to walk through the site. Then charged $30 for a group photo. Just ridiculous. I won't be back to this part of Cozumel. They must think we stupid or rich..🤦🏽‍♀️😠 At the souvenir shops, they tried to get us again. $40 for a t-shirt!?! Are you serious? They need to have the prices posted instead of trying to negotiate everything. And then say tips are welcomed & if you're an honest & polite person, we will leave a tip. I felt more harassed than anything. Just sad, it was not a pleasant experience. 😕

Absolutely breathtaking. Best excursion with the best tour guide, Patrick. He was so knowledgeable about the history! Going to the bee sanctuary was also incredible!

We went here on a tour as apart of our cruise . And we enjoyed here. We even had an incident with our youngest child and the staff and persons were so helpful. But it really showed a piece of history and how far our civilization has come. Drink plenty water and keep hydrated.

Short, quick tour stop on a cruise excursion. Would have loved more time to hear about all the buildings, culture and details of this Mayan site. Some really great views of what this once great city must have been like as well as very interesting insights into the Mayan society. Very worth spending some time with a guide here if you are interested in history, archeology or Mayan culture.

What a lovely and interesting historical site. We had a great guide, Jose, who helped bring the history alive for us. We learned a lot about the Mayans and about the island itself. I would definitely recommend visiting this site.

  • 5/5 Osei X. 1 year ago on Google
Small, but an important place to the Mayans. It's based on a goddess. From our experience get a tour guide and if you can choose a woman. Her passion for this space made our tour so much better. We found people without a tour listening in as she explained the different sites.

  • 5/5 Britt M. 2 years ago on Google
These ruins are interesting and seem to be the hub of the island at one point. The guides here are far less "pushy" than some at other sites and worth their retainer. Be respectful of the ruins and consider hiring a guide to help you understand the history.
