What a wonderful weekend. This was our second time camping at Somabula. We camped at Egret campsite, and it was amazing. Saw all the plains animals and enjoyed the bird life, peace and quitness. Will be back again. Ina & Gerhard

What a lovely nature reserve around an hour's drive from Joburg. We stayed in the Hadeda camp site which was very private (including our own bathroom and shower), had lots of shade, and had a beautiful view. Thanks to Siyas for the friendly service and to Moses for looking after the camp site. We will be back!

Really nice , every campsite has it's own ablutions, fireplaces , and hot water, there is a lot of wildlife everything is well maintained and marked, so it would be difficult to get lost.

Perfect place to escape the busy city life and stay in the lap of mother nature for a few days. We stayed in the self-catering 'Pumba' -chalet closest to the dam. The surroundings are absolutely beautiful and soothing as heaven. Somabula is such a peaceful and quiet property with lots of area for a scenic walk or longer hike with their well marked hiking trails. We arrived on Friday settling into the chalet, watching the sunset and ended the day unwinding and watching the sunset having a braai at our chalet. We spotted 4 giraffe on our Saturday morning walk, some ostrich, buck and beautiful birds on the Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon we had a visit by the property's horses on their way to have a drink and snack at the dam. The chalets are well equipped and bedding is crisp clean. On Sunday morning we had our usual hiking group join us on a lovely hike where we spotted some more giraffe, zebras, ostriches, kudus before heading back to Johannesburg rejuvenated and ready to take on the week.

If I could give this place more stars I would! What a gem. We saw a few unusual animals like the bush babies jumping around in the tree right outside our house. And the dungbeetle gathering his dungnall together. And a family of bushpigs too. It's so relaxing and calm here. I enjoyed an early morning hike and got to see behives and walk across the dam wall. The chalets are very clean and all we needed was there. What a pleasurable stay. There's no signal so nobody can bug you eitherπŸ˜‚ I would suggest taking a torch with because we enjoyed looking around by the braai. I think we saw more here in 2 days than we would have at the Kruger for the week. So many unusual animals. I regret not booking for longer because this place is breathtaking. Thank you Somabula Nature Reserve❀️

Nice hike, not very hard with beautiful vistas and quite a few animals to see like Blesbok, Giraffe, Blou Wildebeest, Eland, Zebra, Impala and more. We didn't book any lapas but it's definitely worth your while to book one and have a picnic or a braai there. They all looked very well situated and well maintained. Not a lot of shade so take a hat.

Peaceful location just outside of JHB and Pretoria. Excellent spot to get out for the day with the family and take a walk around the reserve.

Had a lovely weekend stay at Somabula. Close to Jhb and Pta, and very reasonably priced too. Our family enjoyed our comfy thatched chalet. Lots of bird species to spot. We will be back!

My friend and I had the most amazing experience, as we turned a small curve on our trail, we came face to face with a giraffe. We were literally within touching distance of each other. We were so unprepared for the encounter, we couldn't take pictures even though I had my phone in my hand. We just stood there, taking in the massiveness of this giraffe and it also just stared at us. That was truly amazing.

Went for a hiking trip but there was a heatwave. However Sonja was very accommodating and will be going back there another day to benefit from the payment that we made. Thanks Sonja

Camping is basic but adequate it is a bit on the expensive side but it is close to Pretoria. The game viewing is rather domesticated but it is great fun that you can go game viewing on foot. Will vist again especially for the kids.

It's not a bad hike. Its a bit boring to be honest and keeping a look out for tics is a must. Amazing wildlife did make up for it though

Beautiful hike. Lovely scenery. Don’t check in before 8am for the hike. Sias was not very friendly towards us.

Somabula Nature Reserve is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful get-away in the beauty of nature. It has an abundance of bird and insect life, as well as a selection of animals to enjoy viewing as they run across the lovely valley nestled between the hills, or when they come to the numerous water sources. Somabula offers a variety of camping sites and quaint chalets for different sized groups with convenient comforts. Staff are friendly, but other than the daily cleaning of the braai areas, you hardly notice them as they go about their duties. There is some noise that carries across the river between the chalets and camping areas, but this is minimal and guests of the reserve seem to respect that request to keep noise levels to a minimum. We have visited numerous times and have experienced no noise coming from the surrounding areas or Cullinan while staying in the chalets. The road that leads off the main road to the reserve is paved with bricks and the dirt roads that are used to reach the various accommodation offered is also easily drivable with an urban vehicle. Most of the roads through the reserves can be driven with an urban vehicle with some patches needing to be taken carefully, and the 4x4 route must only be handled with a high clearance vehicle. In my opinion, the best way to enjoy the reserve is on foot with numerous routes that will easily keep one busy over a weekend, and this offers great bird and game viewing. Day visitors are allowed but through pre-booking only.
