I had so much fun riding in the train. I suggest to give the tourist a booklet about this place and they can play good music like songs from the 60's and 80's (ex: ain't no mountain high, close to you by the carpenters, i love you more today than yesterday) songs like this. Some tourist are oldies and I'm sure they would enjoy it more everytime they would hear the song you guys played they will remember the place and their loved ones that they had so much fun. It was my first time to ride in a train something like this and it was a good experience. I came from a far far place and I will definitely promote this place for a new cool adventure to go to. 🥰

Went for our Anniversary. Did first class lounge. $97.50 each. This did include a $20 food voucher each. The trip itself was nice. Very nice and comfy and warm. If you do the lounge I suggest you sit close to where the bar is. We sat clear in the back and it was like pulling teeth to get my hubby coffee let alone any refills. It’s called SCENIC but honestly there is no scenery. Dumpy houses and hillsides mostly. But the ride itself was nice. The Conductor was sooooo friendly. He told us him and his wife owned the lounge car and the car behind us. Made it more personable knowing all the info he gave. Went to Frostburg and had the shuttle take us up into town. It started hailing when we left the train lol. Not much to see or do there. Mostly everything was closed so we just walked around for almost two hours. By then the sun was out. Took shuttle back down to train. Once back in lounge car, we finally hailed the young guy who was the waiter. Nice guy but he was sooo busy you had to really get his attention for any orders. I had the chicken sandwich and I highly recommend that to everyone. My hubby had the turkey sandwich. If your not very hungry I say get it. There isn’t much to it. I will show a pic of menu as well. We also got the cheesecake with blueberries. I paid the difference from the $20 voucher and how much I went over. Was never give any napkins or silverware. So we had a rough time while eating. Sooo bring a few with you!!! We had to ask a few times for something to stir coffee with and getting creamer took forever so be patient. All in all it was a good way to spend the day. Not sure I would do the lounge car or trip again.

Wow. Just stop reading this and book the trip! What an amazing little day trip. I've lived less than an hour away for over 20 years and after experiencing it, I cannot believe it took me so long to go. The staff cares about what they do and it shows. You can feel just how much these people LOVE their "jobs." Very friendly. Very helpful. Very accommodating. There is something for everyone even those who aren't very into trains. You don't have to be into trains at all! Wanna take the kids and let them have fun while you relax? Book a ticket. Want to leave the kids or whoever at home and have some drinks while someone else drives? Book a ticket. Seriously this is a wonderful little gem hiding in plain site. Great prices, wonderful staff, and so much fun.

We purchased 7 tickets on the Polar Express Train for the dome car, 80$ person. Very disappointed! The ride was to be 2hours, put lasted 90 minutes. The staff rushed through the experience which was not how it was mentioned when we bought the top dollar tickets. They said we are going to the North Pole although when the train reached the opposite end of the tracks there is nothing there to indicate the North Pole which didn't make you feel to believe! Didn't Santa Claus boards the train in Russia through with not really spending time and talking to the children as the story indicates which was another disappointment as well. Our tickets were for the 5:30 ride and it was getting dark, which you couldn't see outside the train and the kids became very bored and this was supposed to be FUN!

Went on the Frostburg trip. The ride was great. We opted for the upper dome seating. Wow 360° views. A bit chilly because of the cold weather and older glass but the views were unbelievable. Brunch was included big bonus. Once in Frostburg we were shuttled into town. That was kind of disappointing because the shops were closed all but a very few. (A coffee shop, Lady Bug store and a local essents store) So not so good on a Sunday morning in March. Plan on trying their Murder Mystery dinner trip. Sounds like it will be a blast.

My wife took me on the scenic train ride for my 60th birthday. I had never been on a train of any kind. I was so excited and the excursion did not disappoint. We chose the open car which was very enjoyable since it was a picture perfect day. Might not be a good idea if rain is in the forecast but definitely a good idea if there is no rain due. I plan to try one of the dinner rides next. I would suggest to bring your own food on the open car. The hot dogs we purchased left a lot to be desired. But overall this was a great experience for a very fair price.

We truly enjoyed our train ride on the Frostburg Flyer. Our tickets were for the air conditioned coach seating but we walked about the train and ended up in the open air car. It was so interesting and being up front near the steam engine was a thrill. We will definitely do this ride again.

Grandsons loved the train ride. A long day however as it a 4.5 hour round-trip outing. When you get to Frostburg the hike up hill into town is daunting but there is not much to do at the station. So you hike up to grab a bite or just hang out. We did visit the carriage museum next door which was interesting.

We had a wonderful excursion on the railroad traveling from Cumberland to Frostburg and back. I highly recommend the observation car as it was very comfortable and offered a great view of the Maryland countryside. We were also able to go downstairs in the car to a lounge area to escape the sun from time-to-time. I did try the open car for about 30 minutes; however, with the heat and humidity and diesel fumes, I'm glad we had signed up for the observation car. The railroad staff were friendly and helpful with any questions we had. The only nit on the entire excursion involved getting on and off the train. My wife has significant mobility issues and needed help with using the metal boarding stool. The staff was reluctant to offer any help or encouragement to her in boarding or in getting off the train. We did okay on our own; however, we would have been much happier if assistance had been offered. A concern over liability issues may have been part of the problem.

My husband and I brought our grandchildren to ride the train. They are 2 and 6 yrs old and love trains. They absolutely loved the train ride. The Conductor moved us to seats that had a full window for them to look out as our original seats only had part of the window to see out of. They gave information about certain key places along the route. All the staff was friendly, the train was clean. We really enjoyed ourselves.

First of all, it’s supposed to be a scenic ride, but the windows are all dirty. They could’ve at least cleaned the windows in between rides. So to get good pictures, I had to go to the open air seating. If you do go for open seating, sure the fresh air is nice but you will also get the smoke, leaves, and bits of dirt. The uphill hike (road or stairs) in Frostburg is not recommended for anybody with mobility issues or heart condition. There is a shuttle that’s crowded. Maybe they should expand the shops and dining choices in the level of the station. 90 minutes is not enough. So we didn’t really explore Frostburg. When you book, make sure you choose the right side of the train coz that’s where the views are. The train didn’t flip or did the turntable, they just reversed (engines both front and back) so the right side still gets the best views. That said, it was a nice experience to tick off my Maryland to do boxes. Autumn was in full bloom.

Terrible, homeless living in the station. Contracted them about it and the response was to block me on social media? Talking about the homeless at the station = inappropriate? Guess so...

Nice relaxing day. Wonderful staff, Shelby is awesome. There could be a bit more signage directing folks and communication on what’s going on. Did not know there was a shuttle to take people in town and was not aware our train tickets would gain us entry in the carriage museum. A big thanks to your hard working crew for making it a great day! Roll on 1309!!!

Highly Recommend, some of the best scenery on any scenic railroad in the east. Rode in the dome car which I highly recommend, comes with some snacks and drinks. Well worth the price for the sights made better by the dome.

Fantastic experience. Would definitely recommend going during mid-late October to see peak fall foliage. Get there early to get a seat in the right side if the train as it has better views. You can also get up and walk around so I walked to the outdoor part where you could hear the engine and whistle and smell the steam from the coal, even getting hit with light soot debris. Will be going again!

THE BEAST OF THE EAST! Truly a once in a lifetime experience! The crew was amazing, well trained, EXTREMELY well experienced. Getting to not only SEE a mammoth Steam locomotive in action but to also OPERATE the controls and Pull the whistle was truly incredible! 11/10! Hope to visit again !

We thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end! The Cumberland station is easy to navigate and parking was convenient. The train ride was wonderful! I'd suggest to sit on the side closest to the station, for best views, if possible. Autumn was in full bloom (on 10/21), and the sights were breathtaking! Frostburg station was very nice also. There is a steep walk (up several stairs and then up a hill) to get to most of the shops in Frostburg, but if that isn't doable, the shops and museum on the same level as the station will definitely suffice for 90 minutes. We loved everything about this adventure and will be back again!

My husband and I took our 6 and 9 year olds for the Polar Express ride and it was great! We chose the table car and it was perfect to enjoy our hot chocolate. The staff was friendly and great with the kids. Polar Express music played, the book was read, Santa stopped by and took a picture and the train car sang Christmas carols together. Overall a great experience!

Had a great experience in the lounge class. Perfect for those who prefer a 21+ environment with great drinks. Car attendant was very friendly, and the crab ball appetizers were excellent. A very relaxing day.

Where to begin! This was an amazingly fun and exciting activity. The staff goes above and beyond to accommodate everyone no matter which seating level they purchase. They have a free shuttle that will drive you between the Frostburg station and downtown Frostburg. Specifically the hotel/museum that has a brunch restaurant, bar, and speakeasy inside. It is also very close to many shops and restaurants. We ate Mexican that was about a block away. You have plenty of time to check out the museum, hotel, eat off site, and even grab some amazing moonshine from the hotel speakeasy/distillery. I have lived 45 minutes away from this little gem for over 20 years and I am kicking myself for not going sooner. My wife and I had a wonderful time and my 5 year old thought it was the coolest thing ever. I could literally go on about the wonderful staff all day. These people truly love their jobs and it shows! Add this one to your list and make the trip whether it is for the day or a weekend. The best day trip I've ever had.

Tony and I stopped at the Western Maryland Railway Station to visit the building (historical value) talk to the agent and see the museum. We found out the train schedule and found out because it was mid-week we were not going to able to ride the train. So we are going to try in the fall. We strolled around the building checking out the gorgeous interior. There is quite a lot to see outside also in the plaza and park area. Free to check out plaza and building, there is a gift shop but a cost to ride trains.

This past Saturday, I went on the Evening Dinner Train excursion with a few friends. Let me say, it didn't disappoint. There was also a Murder Mystery show going on during the excursion. The food was excellent, the only thing I would have to say is be careful that you check your silverware once you sit down. Two of the four of us didn't have a knife, so we shared our silverware. Overall, it was a fantastic trip for the price. Got a three hour train ride, dinner and a show.

Lovely ride on a lovely day. One person handling ticket pickup for 300+ passengers. Stupid. Lounge attendant in first class excellent. Need to clean the filthy windows. If I had purchased dome seats, I would have been bent.

We had a wonderful experience! The polar Express train ride was a magical experience for both my 7 year old and our 12 year old! The girl with the colored glasses can really sing!!!!

I realized that they had gotten the dome car in just two days earlier and it was very nice. I would have given 5 stars if I could have seen out of the windows and taken photographs like I had planned to do! Please clean the windows at least for the next groups of people coming in!😕 We weren’t able to get lunch because that hill was inaccessible to anyone slightly handicapped. Busses were filled too. Hamburger stand was tiny and had a line a mile long. We had to go into the little store and purchase little Debbie cakes and Reese’s pieces and hope that that would hold us to our dinner on the way home. Maybe you should recommend a picnic lunch and add more than 3 picnic tables to accommodate all those people. I would certainly have brought one had I have know this ahead of time. It was a beautiful ride and the staff was awesome!👍🏼

I'm a train buff so I went mostly to see engine 1309 for the first time. The engine is massive and a work of engineering art! The train ride is always fun with beautiful scenery! Train was sold out so my friends and I had to sit with strangers, but they were very nice people with interesting stories. I love this place!

Quint train ride, Was a tad bit underwhelming. Without having the fall colors in full bloom, the scenery was unimpressive. Too many trees cover the landscape views, so when the trees aren't showing fall colors, it's not as exciting. The train itself didn't quite have the period ride I was expecting. Don't expect something unrealistic. But it was nice.

We just spent Sunday afternoon on the frostburg flyer in the lounge class car. It was very comfortable and the drinks were good. We had a good time met some nice people. We walked up into frostburg saw some neat little shops and had brunch (really could have used some more time) went back to the train and went back. We would do it again.

Awesome place with a ton of history. We did the rail bike tour and it was very cool to come into a historic station on rail bikes. Great amenities and local food options within walking distance.

$45 a pop to sit behind a live steam engine, getting to watch it in operation up close and personal is a bargain. It's incredible to see such a large, righteous machine in operation. Just give it a try! Great views of the mountains, you can buy wine. It's a proper way to honor an old railroad. Give it a go! Amtrak or MARC, and the museum should really consider working together to help bring people to the area by rail from the DMV. I think both them and Cumberland could benefit from such a train route. Cumberland is worth a day trip, and so is visiting this railroad.

My experience was fantastic and I really enjoyed the trip it was very scenic as the name implies I loved the open air car and the weather was perfect. And Frostburg was beautiful it was interesting to watch them turn that locomotive on the turntable. And 558 was beautifully restored locomotive. I will definitely do this again

Delightful evening with family and friends. Performance was engaging and entertaining with actors that seemed to be having as much fun as the guests. The food was very good! And the service, while short staffed, was excellent. Can't wait to come back. Thanks WMSR.

I'm not sure if it is worth $150.00 a person for a train ride. But the cars are neat as can be, you need to check them all out. The diesel and the steam engines are beautiful. The station and platform look like new. You guys keep it all in amazing condition.

A lovely day out! This was such a treat from start to finish! We started the day with a visit the C&O canal exhibit on site. Great way for the whole family to learn more about how goods ( mainly coal) was transported by the canal system. It provided a lot of jobs in the area and was quite innovative for its time. The train station is a step back in time. The entire process was easy to navigate. I especially loved the conductor shouting “ ALL ABOARD “. We were in coach and it was very clean and comfortable. The air conditioning was a great relief on this hot summer day. They have a lovely little concession to get some quick treats for your ride to Frostburg MD. The train conductor or (someone else not sure) was an excellent tour guide throughout the journey. My only complaint would be the lack of a shuttle from the Frostburg station to main street in Frostburg. While there were things to do at the station, the town of Frostburg was fun to visit. We did have to walk a very steep hill ( there were also steps) to get to Main Street. I definitely recommend taking a trip On the Frostburg Flyer soon!

Beautiful experience, especially in the fall with the leaves. Get in line early so you can get a good spot on the train. Highly recommend the open air car if you can. When I went it was quite chilly which I think caused more people to not want to sit outside, but on the way back, everyone wanted an outside seat when they saw how pretty it was and how much better the views are.

  • 5/5 Hakan A. 1 year ago on Google
I would recommend this beautiful scenic train ride to anyone, but wish someone else had told me the following points first.... 1) the beautiful scenery can be difficult to see when the foliage is on the trees, try autumn or winter for a clearer view, 2) select seats on the side of the train that faces the loading platform at the Cumberland train station else you won't see any scenery from the train except the mountain wall (and of course select seats on the opposite side of the Frostburg platform on the return trip), 3) when you reach the Frostburg station, the walk uphill to the main street in town is very long and steep. It was a nice day trip overall, would do it again.

Nice train ride between Cumberland and Frostburg. 1.5 hours each way with a 1.5 hour stop in Frostburg.
