Update: I’m a black belt and was trying to leave. I wrote the owner a letter explaining I’d be ending my membership. I wanted to broaden my training and take a hiatus but still drop back in for open mats. Instead of acting like a mature business owner, the owner got physical and escorted me out. They’re kind people until you don’t give them money. But there’s more: To the comment: “Thank you for sharing your concerns J, and despite the inaccuracies, your going out of the way shows we still mean something to you.” That is incorrect. The reason I’m going out of my way is to warn people to steer clear of your twisted academy. One star review because this school is misogynistic and anti LGBTQ. Two of your instructors have a background of domestic violence, one of which you let run the kids BJJ program. To leave the school you must turn in a letter stating so. I handed my letter to leave the school to the owner, who reacted in a hot headed way. Meaning, this is when my jacket was grabbed and I was thrown out. This is after 5 years at the school. The issues at this academy are deflected away from the owner labeled as somebody else’s fault. He likes to label others issues with him as “victim mentality” and not his prerogative. He is immature, manipulative, and acts like he cares until you stop giving him money.

The culture at Lake Effect Martial Arts is one of inclusivity and positivity. The Instructors are all well versed in their art and the students help each other reach their full potential. The higher belt students are great at mentoring the lower belt students. This is a wonderful experience for children and adults alike. As an unathletic man in my mid 30's, my time at Lake Effect Martial Arts has put me in the best shape of my life and taught me its never to late to start something new and take better care of yourself. I cannot recommend enough.

Traveled into Buffalo for work. I was recommended to check out Lake Effect Martial Arts by a friend. I travel frequently and always bring a gi in hopes of finding a gym to train at while in town. This is by far the most welcoming gym I've been too. Both by the Instructors and the students. I took part in both the Defense class and the All levels gi class. Good techniques, Good Instruction, amazing locker room setup and ample mat space. The Professors took time with each student on specifics to the drills we were running. Great experience and will be going back the next time I travel to Buffalo. Thank you to Michael and Doug for the specific technique instruction.

I joined LEMA in early 2023 as an “older” student with zero combat sport experience. The coaching staff is welcoming, knowledgeable, and extremely patient. Experienced students are also welcoming and willing to offer little tips and tricks that helped them along on their journey. The class schedule is very accommodating, allowing me to train at least 3-4 days a week while working a 9-5, and raising 4 kids with my wife. I would recommend this gym to anyone looking for a new challenge!

Can't say enough good things about this place. Stopped by during a work trip to Buffalo and got extremely valuable mat time drilling and rolling. Even had 1on1 with multiple black belts which I wasnt expecting as a quick visitor. The professor and students were very welcoming and treated me like family from the moment I walked in. If you are in the area, I highly recommend this place. Looking forward to coming back in the future.

Everyone at LEMA has been very welcoming and it is a great place to learn from knowledgeable coaches. With two locations they have a lot of training options for your schedule. I started jiu jitsu there last year and at 43 years old it's gotten me in the best shape of my life.

I moved to Buffalo, NY, back in September 2021 and started practicing bjj at Lake Effect Martial Arts. I came in as a black belt from another school and was not only immediately welcomed with open arms but part of the family atmosphere that is a staple when training here. The owner and coaches provide realistic training to match your needs but also push you to achieve more if that is what you need/want. Hands down the best place to train in Western New York!!!

Dropped in for a class while in town visiting family. Great rolls, instruction, and atmosphere. Very nice facility, too. I'll definitely visit again next time I'm in the area.
