Trail is located on BELLE ISLE STATE PARK. A recreational vehicle pass is required on MOTOR vehicles entering the park. Great views, parking at beginning of trail. Trails may be wet due to high Great lakes Water levels. Trails loop end is underwater at this time (May 2020) Trail makes loop around field or goes across bridges to a loop. Scattered park benches along trail to sit.Construction of infrastructure has left parts of trails a bit ragged at this time. The Eagles on the island can be seen time to time and other wildlife are around during mornings and evenings. Walking or bicycle thru the trail is permitted. Famous Livingstone lighthouse is along path.

GET THIS! The picnic tables at the entrance are out in the flooded water, you can't read the info signs, the trails you see here on the map are BOTH GONE, and there's a desperate attempt at a makeshift gravel trail (nice and wide) that leads PAST (not up to) the lighthouse, AND RIGHT TO THE WATER'S EDGE! It is beautiful. BUT TURN BACK AND GO THE SAME ROUTE TO RETURN. The stingy golf course barricaded the end of the trail around the lake. You CANNOT get through. Lots of cool bugs, flowers, and NOT a lot of ivy - very cleaned out trails. Excellent views the entire way! Lots of runners, bikers, dog walkers, and young adults! Not many kids - no bathrooms way out there. No water. Be prepared. Everyone seems to smoke weed (mostly the stinky gross commercialized laced weed but some legit homegrown stuff too that doesn't reek), and desperately cover themselves in all manner of cologne and perfume - that kinda leaves you nauseated if you're not anticipating it and holding your breath. Everyone smoking the nasty weed (young, hot headed kids) also like to mess with tourists and pretend you can hike all the way around but it's bogus. The sweethearts are the natural weed smokers who are actually really fun to meet and hang with for a minute; they even offered to kayak with us! I mention this because shockingly you can smell who will scam you and who is -less likely- to cause you a problem.

Easy and pretty hike with two trailheads. (Have walked with my toddlers.) The North trailhead is at the (new) nicely paved and painted parking lot and the South one is about 150 feet away by an "authorized vehicles only" sign. The north side walks close to the lagoon, though in late spring to early fall months, the heavy foliage obscures most of the view. The south trail is along the river with nice views of boats and Canada. Both trails meet up at the Livingstone Memorial marble lighthouse. There is also a deer run style trail that goes right along the water. Personally prefer to walk that late fall to early spring as it can get overgrown. Between the two trails is a large prairie/meadow area. Have seen families flying kites and playing there. Note, it does have a fair amount of wildlife, including garter snakes (non-poisoness and whenever I come across one, which is rare, they hurry in the other direction). From the lighthouse, there is a trail that goes over a small bridge that looks out on the lagoon on one side and Lake St Claire on the other. The trail continues to the golf course, where there is a fence to block going further. Several short trails deviate off this one, including Hipster Beach. When it rains, definitely bring wellies as puddles abound. I've been here many times and have always felt safe. Have had the opportunity to see great blue herons, bald eagles, beavers, tadpoles, and many other types of smaller birds and mammals while walking out here. Obscure factoid: in the 60s, there was a Nike missile site out here.
