William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse

Tourist attraction Historical landmark

👍 It does have a nice hike to reach this place. But the memorial has a closed gate around it. Can’t get close but it was a good small hike. There is a trail around this place to the person who love to walk / run around waters. People often mention lighthouse, walk, beautiful, Detroit, Belle, marble, Isle,

Really enjoy the relaxing walk out to the lighthouse. It's not 'magnificent' because it is smaller and it is gated off but it is a truly beautiful art deco lighthouse (which is a rare style). There is free parking. No picnic tables. A light walking trail. We let the kids jump in and swim in the little lake area nearby and they had lots of fun.

We enjoyed walking the path to this pretty marble lighthouse. It is very unique and has a nice view of the Detroit River and the Canadian shoreline. It is a nice area to view the lake and "salty" ocean freighters as they head up the river towards Lake St Clair or downriver to Lake Erie.

Oh my God. I heard a story between the two countries ( USA and Canada ). But I have seen flags of the two which means they are at peace with each other.

Well worth the short walk from the new parking area. If you line up your sight you can see a perfect view of the lighthouse through the sculpture "One World under Michigan Stars" sculpture. This lighthouse is made of all Georgian Marble - the only such lighthouse of its kind in the country. It was named for William Livingstone an icon of Detroit history. Mr. Livingstone is responsible for the Livingstone channel in the lower Detroit River.

This beautiful historic lighthouse was built in 1929 and is the only marble lighthouse in the nation. It is also only one of two constructed as a memorial in michigan. The lighthouse is in beautiful condition surrounded by a fence about 20 feet from the structure. It's located in a beautiful quiet area of the island just a few minute walk from the parking lot. Make sure to visit this lighthouse and check it out while your on the island.

«Designed by renowned Detroit architect Albert Kahn, the Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse was located at the northern head of Belle Isle, facing Lake St. Clair. The ornamentation of the monument was designed in 1930 by Hungarian sculptor Geza Maroti in the Art Deco style—a classical fluted pillar but with additional modern opulence. The 58-foot-tall lighthouse was sculpted out of Georgia marble – the only such structure in North America. Its bronze and glass lens, originally from the older Belle Isle Lighthouse that was demolished in 1941 to make room for the Coast Guard station, generates an 8600-candlepower beacon visible for up to fifteen miles»

Really cool lighthouse with a green copper door. Makes for a great walking tour on this furthest point on Detroit’s beautiful Belle Isle

One of the most unexplored places in Belle isle probably due to all the road constructions. If you want to see beautiful sunsets and have a quite walk this is the place

Cute lighthouse on the Detroit River, notable for being the only marble lighthouse in the U.S. You have to walk about a quarter mile to get there, but it's well worth the visit as part of a Belle Isle visit.

I love this place! So beautiful. Beautiful marble edifice to honor decades of service to the Great Lakes by William Livingstone. TIP—> there are three wonderful Sides of the marble lighthouse. Very sadly, one side has graffiti tagging on it. Why oh whyyyy!!! 😫 The entire walking trails are lovely also. Did you know Belle Isle is bigger than Central Park in NY? TIP—> bring a bathing suit if you want to take a dip! 🏊🏾‍♂️

Belle Isle is very pretty. The memorial was surrounded by beautiful flowers when we went in September.

A quiet walk through the park with lots of wildflowers to take in and views of Heron lake and the river traffic. Unexpected plus
