This is my second Generator visit, the previous one was in Paris. They are very similar in style but a bit different in substance, naturally. I had a few issues again here but for the most part it was a pleasant experience. The walls were very thin and my neighbours were very chatty at 3am. The mattress was painfully hard and the pillow annoyingly thin. I woke up most mornings sore and with a stress headache. The private room was surprisingly small, especially with luggage in the room, but they did their best to fit out the room appropriately. The location was a bit off centre but had a few great local features like the Jameson brewery distillery tour in the same building. The restaurants in the plaza were pretty good, especially the BBQ restaurant over the road. All up, it was pretty good but has room for improvement.

Stayed at end of August with 3 friends in dorm to ourselves, reception staff friendly but the room and common stairwells/hallways were filthy. Clear that the sheets were changed but little else. This after asking to move rooms because an earlier one also looked like it hadn't been cleaned. The reception offered to send the cleaners, but I ended up doing it myself so I'd know it was done properly. Cleaning cloths were black afterwards, so not just a case of high standards.

I've never stayed in a hostel before and was a bit nervous about this trip. I stayed in an all women room. The rooms were simple but clean. Each bed has a reading light, small ledge for personal items, and a plug. Each room has a bathroom but there is a larger one with more showers and bathrooms on floor one. I stayed three nights and found the other guests to be considerate. I was never worried about security. All of the key places are within a 20 min walk. That may be a lot for some but it was totally reasonable for me. There are plenty of things to do on the same block. The hostel has plenty of community areas including a nice bar, restaurant, pool area, and additional games downstairs. They also have nightly events such as music trivia, live music, and movie night. The staff were all nice and helpful. If Generator is a chain with locations in other cities, I would stay again.

Noise of doors slamming extremely loudly all night, toilet downstairs was disgusting, building site noise all day beginning with someone banging a hammer on the wall beside our room from 7am, no kitchen to cook and no food available, stairs were dirty and needed a hoover, windows were dirty, shame as the bar and downstairs area is quit good and well laid out. Very young inconsiderate crowd, apparently there's a jacuzzi room ERM......

Best hostel I've been to so far. Excellent staff, place feels like it's run professionally which is very refreshing. Lively atmosphere where a person in their 20s or 30s would feel equally comfortable. Think of it as a hotel with dorm rooms. No kitchen or food storage. Very comfortable beds. Good location within walking distance to buses, trains and museums.

I have checked in easily. The stuff was super friendly. The bed linen was clean. They also offered a "spin the wheel" at the bar for a welcome token. The location is great. The Dublin bike station is nearby and also there are several grocery shops that work late. Enjoyed the stay. By the way, there is a hairdryer, soap and shampoo

The toilets were always in a deplorable state of cleanliness. People were disrespectful, speaking in the staircase. Fire doors slam and make noise every time someone goes to the bathroom.

A pretty comfortable hostel. I found the bed and blanket quite comfy, which allowed for a good sleep. It was clean. Only the bathroom was not the most practical, with the sink being so small and low, and the bathtub being so high. The staff was very friendly, even though I checked in in the middle of the night.

This hostel experience was not very good. Even though the hostel has a really nice lounge area and the single room was very nice, it's location is not very convenient and we did not feel safe in the streets nearby as there were always several homeless people around, one of them even threatened us on the streets and followed us inside the hostel and no one in the hostel did anything about it. Definitely not a good experience!

The generator had decent rooms, comfy duvets, and was in a great location but I will come back for the staff. Jason is the kindest, most welcoming, and helpful individual I’ve ever met in my travels. He ensured our every need was met and had an answer for everything. Klaus at the bar made the very best drinks, has the best style, and is such a kind and funny individual. Despite what it took to get to Dublin from the USA during a pandemic, these guys made it worth it!

We were here last year in July 2022. We have never stayed in a hostel before, but this trip lived up to all our expectations. My friends and I booked a room for men and women with a shared shower and bath. The room is new, clean and modern. Each bed has a reading lamp, beautiful storage drawers and sockets under the bed. There was a sink with a mirror in the room. The room was not serviced during our short stay, but we had no problem with that. The room was very quiet and we slept great. The shared bathroom was large, with plenty of showers and sinks, as well as toilets. All key places are within a 20-40 minute walk. But to some places it was necessary to go by bus. It might be a lot for some, but it was perfectly normal for us. The hostel has many public areas including a nice bar, restaurant, and additional games downstairs which are on the reception floor/ground floor. They also host evening events where many people gather. At one of the parties, a raffle was held for gifts, when we moved in, we were given some numbers, if I remember correctly. We gave these numbers at the bar, spun the wheel and won tickets to the observation tower near the hotel, which we were very happy about. All employees were friendly and courteous. Breakfast was buffet style. There was plenty of food and drink. Check-in/check-out was very quick and efficient. We did both online and just went through the front desk to pick up/drop off key cards. The hotel is classified as 1 star, I would say our stay in the room was much better than most 3 star hotels. I would definitely recommend it. Highly recommend!)

Incredible spot. Spotless clean too, and shout out to my namesake Kev at reception- as cool casual yet total professional as they come. Fair play Kev and all there. Top class (and Guinness is outstanding!)

This was a fun hostel. Guests and staff were very engaging. I was in a 4 bed Co-ED dorm. The bottom bunk had enough head room so you could sit up and read. They have a lift, bonus. There was lots to do nearby. The bar also had some good food to offer. They had plenty of seating in the main area of you wanted to relax. I recommend.

I checked in last night and had no issues. Staff was super nice and went out of their way to welcome me. There was an issue with someone smoking in the room and they addressed it right away. I am so glad I stayed here. I would definitely recommend staying here. Rooms are clean, linen is clean and you just have to bring your own towels and hygiene items. They do have everything you need at the desk and it's all reasonably priced. I am bummed I only got two days in Dublin but definitely glad I got to visit. The people here are amazing and I talked to everyone. I feel like the locals are just good people at heart. My kind of place. Thank you Dublin 🥰

They don’t clean the room, don’t change the trash, has no kitchen, and even asking a glass with water is a painful experience. It’s the worst hostel I ever been

I can't recommend this hostel enough! The reception was always there to help and I loved how you had your own charging ports and lamp in each bed space. The little divider helped to feel like you had more personal space and the locker they give you is huge enough to fit your carry-on and other bags inside.

The vibe is beautiful, the rooms are spacious and well set-up. The bathroom has a bit of mold and the water gets everywhere, but they put a lot of work into taking care of it. The rooms are hot, but overall good. They have laundry downstairs, but it is usually busy. Their breakfast is an absolute joke, but other than that, everything is awesome.

The 8 bed dormitory in which we slept in was extremely muggy and had very low ventilation. The whole night was uncomfortable and hot. They will also treat you in such a condescending way to the point in which food and beverages aren’t allowed in the room. The whole experience felt like I was in a strict catholic boarding school where breathing was restricted. Honestly, I’m shook by how many good reviews it had because I am not impressed. The price is definitely not worth it by any means. As Gordon Ramsay says “Pathetic”.

I love Generator. I mean if you want a fancy stay, it’s not the place you would look for but if you are looking for just staying for a night or alone with a cheap price and an international atmosphere, it would be the great place for you. The Dublin branch is at the good location and full of kind staffs. You can walk to the center in Dublin and find food just across the street. Oh, Jameson museum is also just next to it. Haha Don’t forget to bring towel and shampoo (preferably slippers too) because it’s shared shower room so it’s up to you to make sure your stay comfortable.

Well... it was pretty cheap, but it did look like it. Dirty rooms, thin walls and some pseudo dj who played too loud music in the lobby/bar area. But in the end we liked that it was pretty central, we were able to sleep and shower and other than that we weren't really in the room. The room we stayed in was really small, it was almost impossible to all get ready at the same time because of the lack of space.

felt very safe, close to the river! beds were comfy, room had an ensuite. 24 hour desk service and not too loud! lots of grocery stores nearby and 15 minute walk to downtown. outlet and light at each bed, and lockers are large and very secure under the bed. place felt very clean and safe, would stay again!

I'm currently at Generator Dublin. I'm a tutor on a trip with students. I'm lying in bed as I type and, for the past hour, have been listening to about 12 young people, from a different trip, running up and down the halls, yelling, shouting, singing, banging on doors. It's impossible to sleep. It's just gone midnight. Security said they'd check but it's unclear if they have because the noise continues. It was the same on previous nights. That time the person responsible for the loud young people was informed - after multiple complaints from other guests. Up to 10 young people had been running up and down the hallways. This morning a young lad actually banged at my door. My colleague, on a different floor in the hostel, has experienced the same. It's fair that young people get excited but it's bizarre and it seems the accommodation has no control over the behaviour of its guests or has not informed them of expected behaviour. Two different groups have behaved this way. It's also fair to expect some noise in a hostel but guests running around and yelling in hallways is excessive - ridiculous. If the excessive noise and bad behaviour of guests happens over a few nights and on different floors it seems like a feature of the accommodation not a blip. I've stayed in hostels before and expected some noise but not this. I'm at work so, as a tutor leading a field trip, I'd definitely not recommend staying here.

Very welcoming, as soon as the bar opened we got personal service. Wonky pool table, but it creates an interesting game. I may just be tipsy. The guy in the picture was the only successful participant of the Guinness game. It doesn’t change his hairstyle.

I stayed here for five nights it was great value for money and I have to say I've stayed in many hotels and none are like Generator the place is always clean, the staff oh my god!! their always friendly it was the little things they did for example the staff communicated with me before my arrival that helped set my nerves at ease, even at 1am I spoke to Nicholas who was super kind, fun and friendly I'd chat with him all night!! The minute I walked inside the place looked amazing very inviting. The rooms are nice very secure the bed is the most comfortable bed I've ever used. The Generator (Dublin) was a home away from home I'll be staying here again!! Couldn't recommend this hostel enough. The staff are my main reason to come back they ALL!! deserve a pay rise. I'll miss the Generator 👋🏻

Great location, rooms were spacious, beds were okay. It was very noisy at night since our room was looking over the street. Toilets didn't seem to want to work. If you're looking for a cheap place, with a great club like atmosphere, this is your place!

  • 5/5 Peter S. 2 years ago on Google
Super fun and interesting place! Both the different nationalities behind the bar en reception! It's in the middle of all the interesting places, and has access to so much interesting stuff. Absolutely worth renting a room at!

  • 2/5 Callum K. 1 year ago on Google
Staff helpful but hostel in general insufficient there is no bathroom in the room you are required to go to another floor to use the bathroom, rooms hot, noisy and do not have a basic curtain for each bunk which rather standard for hostels now. The nice bar/entrance gives a false impression of the accommodation you are going to.

The location is great! Only 2 tram stops away from city center. You'd also walk which doesn't take you a long time. The rooms were clean and there was a really nice atmosphere

  • 5/5 Richi R. 1 year ago on Google
Cheapest you could find with a close distance to the city centre. Big bar, loads of fun activities to do and live music almost everyday. Cost me €90 for 3 nights during Easter holiday. Stayed in a 6mixed en-suite room. Beds really comfortable and everyone seemed super friendly.

If you like sleeping in a really hot room with no air ventilation ( there are no air vents in the rooms) and where the room windows barley open then this is the place for you. I was sweating profusely in my sleep and the staff just gives a dinky fan which doesn’t help at all. The bathrooms and showers are alright not the cleanest and could use a lot more cleaning. This is my first time staying in a hostile and it’s probably gonna be my last after an experience like this. For the most part the people in the same room as me were all good people no rowdiness at all. The beds are pretty comfortable.

This was the first hostel I have stayed at and overall I enjoyed the experience. The location was fantastic and within walking distance to popular locations within Dublin, and is a very short walk to public transportation. The only notable bad thing I can say about my stay is that there seems to be some plumbing issues and toilets had regular difficulty operation.

  • 2/5 May S. 1 year ago on Google
Stayed here for a few nights in a women only dorm. Nobody else had reserved the hostel so I had the room to myself for 3 nights. I can say that my room had never been cleaned. There were old towels in the bathroom and the previous people’s garbage strewn everywhere for the duration of the stay. Makes me wonder how often they do anything except strip the beds. The storage locker was big and location decent.

  • 2/5 The M. 11 months ago on Google
Staff is a very mixed bag. If you talk to the right person a simple problem will be fixed immediately, as it should. If you talk to the wrong person you'll be waiting hours and have repeated conversations while getting stonewalled that's it's not their problem. (looking at you long and black-haired short guy with mustache) Apart from that it's a run of the mill hostel with a cool bar in the bottom. If you want a relaxing stay for several days avoid, if you want to have a good time for a couple days, good option.

  • 4/5 Chris T. 6 months ago on Google
A pretty decent hostel in Smithfield, just a 15 min walk to Temple Bar and almost everywhere else touristy. The female dorm room is quite spacious and clean, the counter staff are quite helpful and the amenities are pretty decent. There's a bar, pool table and buffet breakfast on the ground floor for those interested. Jameson Distillery Tour is right next door. I can't find anything to fault them for other than the shower drain which gets clogged up easily.

I stayed here over a year ago with my partner for our anniversary! Kevin was absolutely amazing, he sent us up to the tower which we had never done before and it was AMAZING! definitely worth it! A lot of steps but at least I closed my rings 😂 Room was incredible and all of the staff were just so helpful and had such a good energy!

  • 2/5 Clara 2 years ago on Google
While the staff, the location and the welcoming area were great, the rooms and especially the bathrooms were gross. The rooms looked like they hadn’t been cleaned in months, while the bathroom ceiling was covered in mold. We even asked for extra cleaning, but I doubt that we got it. The so-called breakfast we paid for consisted of yogurt and cereal, because they were out of bread. The coffee was okay, however the orange juice tasted like water with urine. I expected it to be a little bit better considering the price.

  • 2/5 Leeawuleena 6 months ago on Google
it’s more of a hotel with dorm rooms than a hostel. there’s not really a hostel vibe at all, or at least that i found. For the price you do get nice amenities (clean and spacious) but they charge a lot for every little thing - to rent towels, use the washing machine (€7!), etc. Also no food allowed except from the internal bar/restaurant which is expensive and not good quality. Good for groups, or an overnight stay, but solo travellers not so much.

  • 4/5 Sehaj B. 1 year ago on Google
Nice place for a hostel. Crown was good. A harpist comes and plays on Sunday it was the most beautiful thing I experienced at this hostel. The place is clean too. There’s storage lockers in the basement paid by the hour.

Pretty disappointed with Generator Dublin, quite different from Generator Miami where I’ve stayed before (I loved Generator Miami): - Paid 120 euros for a bed in a six room dorm on a floor with no washroom for males - no pad locks or towels provided - No social events organized whatsoever, not even a WhatsApp group of the folks in the hostel which was a big disappointment - you can’t carry your own food or drinks to the dorm! First time I’ve heard of such a rule at a hostel. - staff was nice but what else can they do? - check in is at 2 and check out at 10 am. And they’re anal about it and charge extra for a later check out say at 12 Location is decent but I’m never coming back again. Really disappointed.

One of the best hostels I have stayed in. Great location , great security and fantastic wash areas and bathroom facilities. Rooms were secure. Feels like a hotel without the pricetag!

  • 5/5 Naoise S. 5 months ago on Google
This place exceeds expectations. Rooms were incredibly clean and neat at hotel standards, lots of nice amenities available (balcony, shelves and small table, smart tv), good beds. Secure and safe, with great facilities available downstairs (great reception with travel items available to buy, games room, bar and restaurant), buffet breakfast was of good quality. Very good location with a view onto Smithfield square and a minutes walk to the Luas for easy access into the city centre and beyond. Would recommend especially for groups and single night stays

My friend and I even had 4 day stays at this establishment. We enjoyed our stay, the person is very welcoming and available! The hostel is very nice! Negative point: cleanliness. the sanitary facilities and the rooms are really not clean and that's a shame for the asking price ...

  • 5/5 Nicholas H. 4 months ago on Google
Got upgraded from 8 bed to 6 bed dorm. The bathroom was nice and there were lockers available. Atmosphere is great at night and they offer breakfast every morning. The room had lockers and hand soap. Body wash, shampoo, and towels were available at the desk for cheap.

One of a convenient place to stay with your friends, last minute bookings also worth. Downstairs pub closes at 11pm and friendly staff. Rooms are okay but washrooms are not soo grate. I would say Much more young travelers friendly, all the good places and pubs are walking distance. Overall good experience and this is my second time in generator. 😎

We had a fantastic experience at Generator Dublin! The atmosphere and ambient feel were truly enjoyable, creating a warm and inviting environment. The live Spanish music on Sunday night was a delightful surprise. The reception staff, Gio and Vicente, were incredibly hospitable and welcoming. They went above and beyond in helping us with recommendations around the city. We highly recommend Generator Dublin for its great vibes, friendly staff, and unexpected musical treats.

Stayed in a private room. Very spacious and very clean. Staff more than happy to assist around the clock. Very safe and secure accommodation. Great location. On the doorstep of many amazing restaurants and a 2min walk to the Luas if you want to go shopping or visit museums. Lockers available to leave your bags in after checkout if you have time to do more before you leave the city. Will definitely be back.

The location here is not quite as good as it might seem if you're wanting to see the city center. The facilities are fine, though the bathroom layout (1 floor for men's, 1 floor for women's, but 5 floors of rooms) is not exactly ideal. Also, its gigantic - which I don't necessarily mind, but might not be everyone's ideal.

  • 4/5 Hugo D. 2 years ago on Google
The generator is nicely placed, there is pubs, good restaurants around it. The bar inside, is a bit pricey but it's always enjoyable to spend some times with some friends and a beer. We were in a 6 beds bedroom and we stayed for 4weeks and the worst problem that comes to my mind is the quality of the beds, we all had some aches for days !

  • 1/5 Peter E. 2 years ago on Google
Staying 7 days for 7 people (good purchase probably) , city center is close to the hotel, that is okay. But never go and get there... Even if they try to get you with priceless discounts... For example, we still couldn't get in to our chamber because the receptionist was too lazy for doing anything... Horrible, never mind getting there!!

  • 2/5 Lavinia W. 2 years ago on Google
The rooms were nice. I stayed in a 4-bedroom. If there was a problem and you told someone at the reception it was always fixed fastly. But there were a lot of issues, the toilet stopped working twice during a week and the shower looked like it wasn't cleaned for over a week and the drain was clogged. So that was kind of disappointing, since I was paying 50€ per night and had to share the bathroom with 3 strangers. I expected a bit more, but once again they were fast with fixing after you tell them, but housekeeping, which came daily wouldn't do something without a complaint first.

  • 5/5 Kris M. 1 year ago on Google
Clean, affordable, great location (10 min walk from city center or 2 min by luas (tram). They helped resolved an issue i had very rapidly. Great staff at reception and bar. Inclusive. 2000% recommend this hostel. Just missing an USB plug at the head of the bed, but they have 2 regular and a light.

  • 1/5 Andrew C. 1 year ago on Google
Firstly, the room is was in was next to the entertainment space so it was loud with music blaring away and people coming in and out of an external door by the window so it would've been impossible to sleep without earplugs. I was awoken in the middle of the night by the security guard that I had been allocated a bed in the incorrect room and that my bed belonged to someone else and I had to move myself and my belongings to another bed in a different room. That I could be told incorrect information where my bed will be is appalling. If you enjoy having to change location in the middle of the night then come here, but otherwise stay literally anywhere else.

Overall a good experience. Well located and a good place to hang out as well. Love the live entertainment, I was there on a Wednesday and they had some really cool live music. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Shoutout to Casey and Martin who were real gems at the breakfast bar and helped me with some extra requests due to food allergies. Would definitely come again!

The staff is very friendly and helpful. My phone and money was stolen out in town and they helped me get through that ordeal with minimal issues. Hands down they are like family. They also have an amazing harp player that plays there every Sunday. I definitely recommend staying here.

This way my first experience staying in a hostel and it did not disappoint. It was very modern! It had a nice little area for breakfast and they also had a bar. Also, they had some pool tables downstairs which was neat. The rooms were very nice and clean. The only thing they can improve on is their breakfast as I felt like they didn't have enough variety of things to choose from. But besides that I recommend this hostel if you are looking for somewhere to stay. Far enough from the craziness but close enough for you to take a 20 minute stroll to.

  • 4/5 Sierra D. 2 years ago on Google
It was so amazing the front desk Jason was extremely helpful and so welcoming!! I would rate it five stars however housekeeping kind of lacked in our bathroom… our drain didn’t work so our shower flooded and once the water was on the ground there was icky pieces of past that didn’t seem it to be mopped before we came. I think overall I would stay here however if you are a germaphobe pay attention!! Staff otherwise make up for it completely, such an amazing experience.

  • 2/5 Ian L. 1 year ago on Google
Overpriced for what it is. They nickel and dime you for every little thing too. It also does not have air conditioning, which considering it cost $800 for three nights, was mind boggling to me. Would not come back here. The staff is nice though.

Gave a star because staff on reception are very nice. But it’s very hard to sleep in the rooms. Very hot with 5/6 people in it. Beds are very uncomfortable. For a hostel visit, they are charging crazy money.

Generator hostels never fail. The place is very nice and the beds are very comfortable, the staff is very friendly and attentive. Whenever I travel alone and want to stay in a good but low-cost place, I try to make it a Generator hostel.

Stayed here for a stag do. Highly recommend. Rooms were hot and the window was behind a bunk bed but it wasn’t unmanageable. They provided a Fan for us. Our favourite part of the hostel was the bar with pool tables. Table football and jenga. A good place to start the day of drinking. Location is brilliant. Shops and cafes are across the road and a pharmacy is a minutes walk.

Really good hostel. The beds are super comfortable and clean. Rooms are spacious and bathrooms are big and clean. The bar is really good, cheap prices for beer and there's live music sometimes. Just be sure to bring an adapter because the beds don't have USB ports

The staff and location and the building are great. The 6 person mixed dorm was pretty hot in July - we had a window which was open but it's one of those suicide windows. It's safe and the showers and bathrooms are very clean. Lots of places to work if you're doing a business trip and good wifi. But no kitchen which I knew about ahead of time. If there was a good hostel with a kitchen I'd prefer it. I can only eat out so much before I have my fill - it's nice to have a fridge with some fresh options can keep for myself. I got the sense that my stuff would be safe in the rooms and I wasn't disappointed. For the more paranoid you can get a lock to put your stuff under the bed. The bed was surprisingly comfortable and the pillow was great.

Stayed in Dublin with some friends for the weekend. We booked the room with the private bathroom. It was clean and beds were so comfy! The hostel itself is nice with plenty of games and entertainment to enjoy the eve! Friendly staff and perfect location! Highly recommended 🍀

Lovely place to meet people, a lot of place to take a drink and/or relax in the shared space. The room was pretty good and feels like new. The bathrooms were quite clean and not too crowded for the number of people in the hostel. Highly recommended.

If you should ever travel alone as a Girl, please don't stay at this Hostel !!! The Smithfield Square is a sketchy place to stay at as a Girl traveling alone. SO PLEASE be aware of everything and everyone around there!!!! Also, there's no common kitchen or microwave. So there's no place to heat up your "food". Food and Drinks aren't allowed. So watch out for that. The rules are very strict and the staff has to follow these rules. So don't take offense right away, but be VERY direct if anything should ever happen to you or you feel unsafe. The good thing is that the guard station is right around the corner, if you should ever have the need to report smth. PS: In case you feel unsafe: CONTACT THE GUARDS ! The authorities in Ireland will take good care of you.

It's a very good place for all ages particularly students learning English. Good food, great entertainment and a 5 min tram ride to the city centre when you can get details from reception and tickets for wherever you want to go. All and all a very good stay, considering that l am a native of Dublin and l visited , friends and family. Valerie

The rooms have a reasonable level of comfort and the hostel is very well situated, but the prices are too high for a hostel. We also had a major problem with housekeeping that had not properly cleaned the room and a very dirty bed in which sb had had an accident... And we had booked a more expensive private room, so I'm not sure how this is dealt with in the dorms. Good point is that the night shift staff was both kind and reactive and had the room cleaned when we signalled this point. The day staff however didnt check the room and didn't react when told there was something wrong. I wouldn't say it's an absolute no-go as the rest of the stay went fine, but there are better options out there.
