I was a remote patient here in July 2020 and would advise caution to anyone seeing treatment here. The psychiatrist I was assigned to, a Dr McManus, showed in the two times I engaged with her remotely in Microsoft teams meetings zero empathy, compassion or basic clinical judgement and she was extremely rude to a family member whom I had asked to be present with me on the second occasion. I was so unhappy at her approach that having debated going into hospital under her care for a few days I ultimately decided to ask for a change of medical team and get treatment as an outpatient. This was largely because of the delay of three weeks in getting admitted from my initial contact requesting admission. I had also been told by admissions that a change of team was not a normal request so It appeared that to me that another few weeks could be taken off the allotted 100 days on my plan while waiting for a new consultant . I thought it would be wiser to discharge myself and wait for an outpatient appointment so that I would have sufficient days available if I needed to spend an extended period in hospital for the rest of the year. The response of the Clinical Director to my request was a four line letter advising me to re-engage with my local mental health service. I had sought treatment in SPMHS because my local Day Hospital service had effectively shut down due to the pandemic and I had put the psychiatrist on notice of this. For the 12 days I was a remote patient, my insurer was charged €7,717.44 - the same as a patient who was physically present in the hospital. I don’t know how a facility can justify charging a remote patient the same as an in-patient when a remote patient incurs no catering, cleaning or maintenance costs. I pointed this out to their Finance Department and was informed that SPMHS has the full agreement of their insurance partners for this and that as it received no statutory funding it had to charge for its services. For a charge of nearly €8,000.00 I had a 40 minute initial phone consultation with a registrar, a ten minute call with a pharmacist, two half hour appointments with the psychiatrist I was assigned to, a phone call with a nurse each day that generally lasted no longer than 10 minutes in which I was asked a series of rote questions, a list of online activities such a pre-recorded lectures most of which you could get for free on YouTube with better reception, a phone call with a social worker for feedback on why I had requested a change of team …that was it. I don’t have anything positive to say about SPMHS except that the nurses I spoke to were decent – even their administrative staff were incompetent - I was told by one person in administration that she did not know the email address of the person she told me I had to contact to request a change of team so I had to located it myself on their web site. She also told me that the charge per night was €500.00. Subsequently I was informed by their Finance Department that it was €608.18 per night. When the bill was settled by my health insurer six months later I discovered that the charge was €643.12 when I broke down the final amount into 12 nights. By dint of persistent phoning I eventually managed to access treatment on the public system where I was treated with the basic respect, compassion and dignity that had been lacking in St Patricks. I wouldn’t normally write public reviews particularly on such a private matter but I feel so strongly about the way I was treated (particularly during lockdown in the middle of a pandemic) that I am posting it here.

After 22yrs being a patient here I was bullied by Dr Sorcha Mc Manus . Complaining to the director was a waste of time and also was going through the complaints process . Even though they do courses here regularly to improve your self esteem , to teach you how to to stand up for yourself , how to deal with bullies etc .It does not work inside the walls of of the hospital..Those of us who are unfortunate to suffer from our mental health are at these doctors mercy but when one or more turns on you when your in a fragile state its unforgivable .After months of endless letters and emails the end result is I have no team no consultant no st patricks hospital anymore if I need respite . I was under the amazing Dr Corry I saw her every 3 months what a come down a brilliant psychiatrist to a blundering BULLY

Absolutely useless staff and doctors, my brother was a patient there and I can not publish what I witnessed in St Patrick's Mental Hospital. Their main concern is money and how long your Health Insurance lasts. My brother tried to take his own life the day after been discharged. Enough said!

LET THE BUYER BEWARE. The care my father received was abysmal. My Father was admitted to the high dependency Dean Swift ward. While in his stay here he was assaulted on THREE different occasions by another Patient. He was first Punched, then a glass of water was fired at him unprovoked, and on the third occasion he was thrown on the floor which resulted in him fracturing his hip. He was admitted to St James hospital where he was 36 hours on a trolley before he was admitted, he was accompanied by what appeared to be porter who had limited English. Despite St James doing the best they could and where the care and communication was excellent, they could not manage to get my father mobile again where he DIED of Pneumonia. The autopsy revealed that my father had suffered an allergic reaction to the medication he received in St Pats which caused all his muscles to lock thus St James could not get his mobile again. In the Dean Swift Ward the staff spent most of there time filing out paperwork as opposed to being in the ward. The exercise facilities are smaller than a tennis court. The consultant Dr O Ceallaigh went A-wall for two weeks before the last assault, the only response I could get from he secretary was that he was in court and unavailable. The consultant didn't seem aware of what was going on in the ward, as he rang me up on a Sunday after the assault and told me " He did not believe anyone else was involved to which he later retracted the following day. They performed to independent enquiries, neither of which examined his medication and all they did say my father was a difficult case. Complete damage control, it took a staggering 18 months for the second enquiry to complete I contacted the metal health commission and they said " they do not comment on individual cases " thus It appears the private mental health care in unregulated or self regulated!!! Poor communication throughout, PS. It seems unusual that all the good reviews of this place seem rather scant on information and details!

Terrible hospital, being private, all they care about is getting the money. My mother is not well at all and she has been in there for weeks, she has not seen one counsellor or therapist since she's been there. They let her lie on her bed all day popping in occasionally telling her that breakfast/lunch/dinner is ready. They have done nothing to help her mental health and even when you ring and speak to the staff they will all give you different information, she had an out patient appointment at another hospital and I rang up to confirm that a taxi will collect her from the hospital and when she gets to the other end someone will meet her there, one of the nurses told me "she could go on her own, there's no need for someone to meet her" my mum is also in there because of alcohol abuse!! They don't give full care at all and it has left my whole family completely at a loss. I would rather try public then this shame of a hospital. Her consultant even had the nerve to say the nurse are keeping a close eye on her and her personal hygiene and say she is looking after herself very well, last time I was in she hadn't washed her hair in over a week. So disgusted.

Attrocious treatment of a family member here, vhi charged 20k for 6 weeks of a few phone calls, we are no further along and still need to seek treatment elsewhere. I cant comment on in patient care as she didnt receive any even though vhi were charged as if she did. I dont feel this hospital cares about anything but making money im so dissappointed, some individuals nurses were ok but this hospital needs an urgent overhaul and vhi need to make them account for the money its giving them!!

I have been an inpatient in St Pats for a month. I left after a week on dean swift in february, due to the incompitence of senior staff. within this admission have not seen a social worker, therapist, counselor, physio therapist or had any meaningfull interaction with a doctor. I have witnesed drug dealing, intimidation, masogony go unchecked or conveniently ignored by staff. i have been transfered through four beds on three wards and have no daily program or routene.this place has made my life allot worse. the website is fradulent, do not believe a word of it. And if you care for your own recovery or the recovery of a loved one; Do not sign in to this hospital. Dean swift is turning in his grave.

I would give minus 5 stars if I could. Went in here as a teenager with mental health and addiction issues. I was treated with judgement and no compassion or empathy by nurses and doctor Conor farren absolutely worst doctor ever.I would go as far as saying dangerous as I left feeling even more isolated and tried to take my life again. This place did me more harm than good. I believe that If I had received decent care here and been treated with deceny and empathy my life might have went a completely different way and I might not have went through 7 more years of hell. I will say to be fair that the actual counsellors were very nice and genuine but doctors and nurses were horrible and totally unprofessional. Please heed this caution and avoid as I would not like any other vulnerable person to be treated the way I was still years later upsets me. I have received a millions times better care from some public hospitals.

Psychiatry is not about healing, there all about labeling. They get it from the DSM Manual, its the slating manual. Psychiatry will never be about healing. They don't heal, they just label. They have the audacity to all themselves doctors, there look downers and abusers, stay well clear. and they laugh all the way to the bank. Lets end the Psychiatric abuse its about time it comes out. Hush Hush. Healers not in a million years slaters instead. Have you ever heard of doctors leaving someone with there condition for life. This is what these monsters will do. You will forever be left with your LABEL. And the Stigma that comes with that. Take your health into your own hands. These people will not make you better.

I could not be more disappointed with this team who could not even pretend to care about my family member post-discharge. Prof Farren, Aisling, I hope you are ashamed of yourselves. Once the VHI payments stopped coming, they wouldn’t so much as take a phone call. Disgusting.

My father was admitted to the Dean Swift Ward, Communication was extremely poor, As the previous review states - Doctor O Ceallaigh is incompetent, the turnover of staff is so high on the Dean Swift ward that nobody knows whats going on, the staff seems to change daily, no continuity of care, try ringing O' Ceallaigh or getting in touch is impossible. O' Ceallaigh himself has not a clue whats going on in the ward. Tried asking the registrar how my father was, the only information I received was that there's no change, but in reality she hadn't a clue. I went into his room he was banging him head off the wall. Costing approximately 500 euro a day and the place is a circus, and even at 500 a day they charge additional to do the Laundy. If your sick I would advise going into the public sector as a private patient. Avoid this place at all costs. The Website is fraudulent, "non profit", if you want to see where the money is going - take a look at the private car park where you will find a dozen 6 series BMWs or its equivalent. It is an absolute disgrace what goes on here, I wanted to make a complaint about St Pats but there's no one to complain too. The mental heath commission do not comment on individual cases so the question must be asked - How in God's name do they regulate this place ??

After a bad brain injury 17 years ago I was sent from Beaumont to St Pats and I was lucky enough to have been under the care of Mick McDonagh. He not only got my psychiatric symptoms under control (there were some compulsize behaviours due to the temporal lobe damage) but he also got my seizures under control. I am now an economist of considerable repute (I topped my class Mick and now a manager in one the biggest marketing companies in the world!!!). Two of my best friends in the UK are psychiatrists - they speak of Mick with such reverence that I know I was a lucky man!!! Thanks mate - aside from an odd seizure here and there my health is great!

First class facility. I was very fortunate to recieve excellent care from Dr McManus and her team over the summer, and was treated with utmost compassion and respect by the nursing team on Stella Ward. I really cant fault one thing about this hospital and credit it with getting me well again. I would give it more stars if I could.

Learned from my team at St. Pats that I had been living with a misdiagnosis for 8 years and was on a tablet I didn't need to be on. Dr. McManus' progressive approach had me weaned off a tablet that wasn't at all necessary to my mental health - which at the time was extremely poor. I was told my issues were as a result of an emotional issue rather than a clinical and that changed everything. I can't recommend the place enough. I'm a new man since leaving and am no longer reliant on meds to stay well. I don't know where I would be if I hadn't been checked in. From the nurses to the ground staff to my support team, I wouldn't have a single word to say against them.

Excellent service and care to those in need. Vast majority of staff are amazing, helpful people. Dr McManus & her team are excellent. You will always get out what you put in, and this is emphasised across the hospital. All the support is there for the taking. You will be supported through the in patient and outpatient process. I don't recommend remote care until you've spent some time in the hospital. It should be an option for when you are finishing up care so that you have full understanding of the hospital and it's support when at home.

Dr Gavin Rush and his team are absolutely amazing with me. By the time I met them I was so lost and unwell that I doubt anyone thought I would survive. I have improved so much in the last number of years it's hard to believe. I could never praise them enough. I reckon my consultant is probably the best in Europe, I'm very lucky.

My sister went in in the worst possible state ever, after almost attempting to take her life, the doctors and receptionist turned to say β€œoh well if you don’t have €30K or healthcare we can’t do anything” no sympathy no nothing, these are the people who supposedly β€œlook after” our mental health. Absolute joke and I hope they get the taste of the exact same medicine when they’re in need, nasty people working there. All need to be sacked and replaced with robots because even they have more feelings and empathy towards their patients than these stupid people

Saint Patrick's hospital is brilliant ! The staff are absolutely First Class ! The care , help , support , kindness , and the treatment I received was outstanding ! The consultant , doctors , nurse's and the staff on the ward I was in could not be better ! When I was admitted I was not in a good place but with their help and treatment I am doing very well ! As for the hospital itself , it is absolutely spotless ! The food was delicious and you have such a choice ! The grounds are well maintained and the garden is so tranquil ! There are so many activities available both during the week and during the weekend ! I would rate Saint Patrick's hospital very highly and would recommend it to anyone ! Thanks a million to all ! I have no problem giving Saint Patrick's hospital five stars because it is well deserved !

I went into St Pats with no will to live and no belief that things could get better - and then they saved my life. Long story short, there's no magic pill, and a lot of work goes into getting and keeping your mental health under control. I spent most of my time in hospital questioning and second guessing the doctors, wondering why more wasn't happening. I thought I was supposed to leave if hospital "fixed". Once out of hospital, partaking in the groups, trying my best to trust the advise I had been given, and putting in the work, my mental health and life is the best it's ever been! I'm so grateful. I would never have believed the progress I have made is possible! St Pats and their groups offer compassionate, holistic and personal treatment plans and support. Small, incremental steps to recovery! My Dr, Paddy Power is great. The facilities are fantastic, the staff are friendly, and the food is nice.

I have been a patient here a few times with the last few years. First off I will say that I have the best consultant and team imaginable. Dr Gavin Rush and Irene Keegan are without doubt really fantastic with me. They listen, they allow me to have input in my treatment and from an OT perspective they and the OT I had (Enda Larkin) came up with some really good ideas to help me get back to work and back on my feet. I wouldn't have survived without their help and patience. Treatment can only work if both sides are willing to put the effort in, the team's encouragement and reassurance made it a lot easier for me to work with them. Wonderful wonderful people. I did the Radical Openness program about 3 years ago. I found that helpful in many ways but not perfect, it was very confusing and kind of turned me into a doormat. One of my fellow patients on that course was bullying me but the course leader took her side. He has damaged me a lot, often telling me that there is nothing wrong with me, I shouldn't be in the services etc. Nothing could be further from the truth, he also implied that I'm only looking for attention. He is in a powerful position and blocks a lot of treatment options for me. He obviously doesn't understand anything about depression, anxiety, ASD or PTSD. Needlessto say the other patient that was picking on me got away with it all. She was also a lot prettier and well to do than me. Even my course mates stood up for me but to no avail. My consultant and team stood by me too. Overall my experience has been very good but in my opinion they seem to have got rid of some of the helpful things they used to have, like mindfulness meditation and some lectures on various aspects of mental health. They were always presented in the mornings by staff but now it's often dvds instead. Maybe it's just that it's summer and therefore holiday time but most of the optional extra curricular activities at present are either bingo or quizzes. Still, they definitely saved me and continue to help me. The staff all work hard and I have never met anyone of them who wasn't kind, respectful and brilliant.

My sister attended this hospital (April-may 2020) under the supervision of Dr. Mc M. The doctor and team operate from a completely clinical, cold medical model with such a lack of compassion for their patients. My sister left still feeling suicidal and Dr. Mc M response was if she takes her own life that will be her choice. There was no communication (bar 1 zoom meeting which Doctor Mc M which ended abruptly), no aftercare plan or outreach support. She was recommended a therapist who only had availability for her in 5months. Throughout my sisters stay the care by staff was dismal & the hospital social worker failed to turn up for a pre-arranged meeting with my sister. She was self-harming but was left to her own devices and the attitude by Dr Mc M was she is inflicting this on herself. I find it so depressing that trained professionals, have the qualifications but complelety lack empathy & compassion for the patients, to such a degree that patients are at risk here. Plus there is no communication with family and staff were rude at times, no basic courtesy. This is one of the worst hospitals in ireland & the cost is astronomical. HIQUA NEED TO DO A CAREFUL INSPECTION OF THIS FACILITY. This hospital is failing patients. My sister is doing great now but got a completely different diagnosis from St. James mental health service than the one she got from (Dr. Mc Manus) in St pats. She credits St James with getting her life back on track. I dread to think what would have happened if she followed the Dr. In St pats advice. Shocking. Investigations are needed.

So called 'doctor' Marie Naughton of the Temple ward. If you are admitted to this hospital you will not be treated by her with dignity and respect. You will be treated with extreme suspicion and hostility in a cold and punitive "medical" model. You will feel and be subjugated. You will be spoken to and treated as if you are not even a human being, as if you are an inanimate object. Your basic human needs, including your sense of security, will be disregarded, neglected, and abused. You'll be met with extreme condescension and will be gaslit and manipulated. Your humanity will be trod upon. You will be systematically dehumanised and your whole sense of self will be shattered. You will be spoken at in such an officious, highhanded manner, you'll feel as if you are back in primary school being spoken to like a child, or being cross examined in the witness box. She has absolutely no understanding of the nuances of people, of how to talk to people, of how to deal with people. I have been left profoundly demoralised and traumatised by this so called human being and it still haunts me to this day. You will be left psychologically, spiritually and psychically damaged. This person uses fear to control people in a very deliberate and calculated manner. The coldness with which I was dealt with by this person was absolutely chilling. I've had warmer, more cordial, and more humane interactions with Gardai, even in bad situations. It is completely unacceptable that anyone would behave like this or treat people like this. The worst "person" I have ever met. Not a shred of humanity. Triggered a deeply dangerous crisis in my whole entire life. Behaves as if having a medical degree means that every thought that enters her head is objective fact and her word is gospel. You'll be judged and your honesty and integrity will be attacked. This person is completely unsuited to this line of work. Anyone as socially inept and lacking in compassion for human beings as this should NEVER be working in psychiatry with severely vulnerable people, particularly with such a backward, punitive, hostile, abusive, medieval mentality. Patronising and alienating. An extremely invidious, hateful woman. A bully. Nurse Ratchet. This entire situation deserves national exposure and needs to be subject to an external review.

Three referrals and three refusals from this hospital which claims to 'advocate for those experiencing mental health difficulies'. It is difficult to understand how you can be an advocate for mental health while also turning away those who are most vulnerable. Absolutely devastating experience for this family and not an unique experience if I am to believe the allegations made by a psychiatrist working in mental health. There are places available but the hospital won't allow this person to avail of a place. This hospital needs to be subjected to an external review but first we need to find some one who cares.

My father was assaulted three times in this place. The third time was the end of him. He broke his hip, St James's done their best but he died there. The autopsy showed that he was also having an allergic reaction to the medication he was receiving at St pats which caused all his muscles to lock which Dr O Ceallaigh put down as parkinsons disease. When this occurred I discovered that St pats is regulated by the metal health commission and that the metal health commission do not comment on individual cases so when you have a problem there is nowhere to go. They have this in-house system where. St pats investigate themselves, it was a complete white wash. HIQuA do not cover private mental heath hospitals. In short AVOID, , just because it has an extortionate price tag does not mean the health care is good. Terrible place, really poor communication. This is what pats have sent me. The facts are another patient first threw a glass of water at him, secondly he was punched, On the third occasion he was thrown too the ground where he broke his hip. St James hospital told me that they me they couldn't get him mobile again because of the muscle damage caused from medication he received at pats. This is recorded on the autopsy we received from St James. Fact, pats appointed the investigator into the case, so I am at odds to what piece of information they regard as being incorrect. Hi Tony, we wish to offer our condolences to you on the loss of your father. We strive to provide a high quality service that is grounded in a human rights ethos.
