Let me just say that I didn't dislike the place, but as a chef I expected more. I'm not going to list all that I didn't like because that would be unfair because I am a very qualified cook. However, certain protocols should never be compromised. I ordered two pork chops, Mac n Cheese and yams. The chops were thin and slightly over cooked but had good flavor. I ordered two chops but it appeared that I had only one that probably was cut and made into two. The Mac arrived lukewarm to cold and wasn't fresh and the yams were a cross between being mashed and a casserole. The owner was very sweet and amiable and that made my visit pleasant but the food was not par with the service. I almost asked her could I offer some quick assistance to help expedite her orders but digressed. Will your experience be better or worse? I don't know, but I would imagine that if you go when the sides are made fresh, I'm sure that it'll be better. Let me add that I was specific because I'm hoping that your experience will be different and better than mine. I'm rooting for this place!

Classic kitchen and a must have in Durham. The real Durham. The part that the new buildings and construction dust can't cover up. Here in Durham North Carolina for the last 30+years. One supporter has been coming here since she was 10. Who else is here God is here. Bible verses everywhere. This is a favorite stop on every credible tour. The oxtails are amazing. I found my grandmother's house. The cooking is like home. All is right with the world. Thank you.

Listen! I've been here twice out of the 8 years I been in Durham. I wish I would have came more. If you want Southern soul food no frills and thrills; come to JC's. As we know everyone cooks dishes differently, so the way she cooks may look different from you mama or grandma. Regardless, the food is delicious. The Turkey wings are tender and flavorful. Green and cabbage were also good.

Food wasn't good, Yams we're dark brown and it wasn't brown sugar and they were mush no sweet potato shape or color at all. People were friendly but no one else came in. Cobwebs were on table legs and plastic tables were stained. The cook took our orders and also covered the cash register. She was asked if the lemonade was made on site. She answered, Yes, but it was powered lemonade with fresh lemon sliced added. My other attendees we're not pleased with their food either. Fish soggy, oxtails over cooked, and my country styled steak was not steak but was hamburger shaped in a rectangle shape. I feel bad writing this but I don't want anyone else to have this experience.

The ox tails, rice, yams and potato salad were cooked to perfection. Very friendly staff. You will NOT hear vulgar language and obscene music here. I love the atmosphere.

While someone did explain that they hadn't planned to be open all day...the staff was extremely nice...however, the service was very slow. The food was served at a good temperature but wasn't very appetizing. They were out of several sides which you didn't find out about until you were waiting for your food. I'm sure this place is great for someone. They have oxtails and pig feet and other things on the menu.

I ordered a double cheeseburger and it was good. But the fries were dark like it was cooked in old grease. I also ordered 3 chicken wings and they weren’t good at all. They were dark and smelled like fish and tasted like fish. It seems they deep fry everything in the same fryer or don’t change the grease very often. I worked in food service 16 years and we changed the grease once a week so I can tell when food is fried in old grease
