Incredible part of the old city. Edinburgh castle itself would take almost the whole day to visit. The Scottish whiskey experience is not to be missed. The tartan weaving mill is excellent and loved the bagpipes being played on the road. I would love to visit again.

Absolutely magical and stunning street. The buildings really make you go back in time and all the different pubs and shops give a very nice atmosphere to the area. It's also a splendid walk to get to the castle. One of the top things to do in Edinburgh

Fascinating artitecht and quite amazing old city vibe. This is must visit place if you are on tour to Edinburgh, generally very crowded but really good place to have a real feel of the city. Quite a few great picture spots here and good street side food on offering. Can easily spent few hours here roaming around.

Edinburgh's famous pedestrianized old street is very popular with tourists and locals alike, which makes it so busy anytime, It's a lovely easy stroll towards Edinburgh's castle, with numerous churches, monuments and attractions along the way. Absolute gem of a street to visit, has everything from food, drink and gifts for everyone, well worth a visit.

4 stars only because all the shops are very much "tourist priced" however 5 stars for simply having a great place to sit, enjoy a coffee, talk with friends etc... Just make sure to bring a decent budget if you plan to come here often. Also, try to come outside the festival dates (pretty much any time except August) as it will be packed from rear to ear with tourists

Journey Through Scotland's History - The Royal Mile, Edinburgh As an extension of our NC500 journey, we visited Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile, an enchanting street that encapsulates Scotland's rich and varied history within its bustling thoroughfare. Stretching from the majestic Edinburgh Castle to the regal Holyrood Palace, the Royal Mile is a feast for the senses. The cobblestone streets, centuries-old buildings, and the vibrant atmosphere make it feel as if you've stepped back in time. There's something for everyone on the Royal Mile. History enthusiasts will enjoy exploring the many closes (narrow alleyways) leading off the main street, each one with its own story to tell. The various historic sites, museums, and landmarks, including St Giles' Cathedral, offer fascinating insights into Scotland's past. Shopping enthusiasts will find a variety of unique stores offering everything from traditional Scottish tartan to locally crafted jewellery. The numerous restaurants and cafes serve a wide range of food, offering something to suit every palate. Do try the traditional Scottish delicacies! Street performances, particularly during the Fringe Festival, add to the lively, festive atmosphere of the Royal Mile. Despite its popularity, the wide street and its many offshoots mean it never feels overly crowded. Easy access to public transportation and well-signposted pedestrian routes make navigating the Royal Mile a breeze. Do remember, it's a fairly steep walk, so comfortable shoes are a must. In conclusion, the Royal Mile is an unmissable part of any visit to Edinburgh. Whether it's history, shopping, food, or just a vibrant atmosphere you're after, the Royal Mile has it all. It's not just a street; it's an experience that perfectly captures the spirit of Scotland.

A great experience. We didn't have much time so this was our microtour. The architecture is beautiful. There are plenty of nice shops for souvenirs. And a few pubs and coffee shops too.

The Royal Mile is a succession of streets forming the main thoroughfare of the Old Town of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. It connects two royal residences (the Castle and the palace of Holyrood House), it is also home to parliaments old and new, law courts, a cathedral and churches, and a vast range of visitor attractions, walking tours, shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs.

You can take ghost tours, eat, drink, see the castle, see the palace and many other things. It is an amazing vacation! You won't believe your eyes on the beauty the street beholds! It is a must see!

Long street where you can see different artist showing there performance. This variations goes from showing owls, singers and some bagpipes. Is is a straight line from Edinburgh castle to Holyrod castle. A lot of nice places where you can eat, so go for it you will not be disappointed

Edinburgh's Royal Mile is full of history, restaurants, shops and unique experiences, making it a must-see destination for anyone visiting the city. At one end is the Edinburgh castle which is incredible in and of itself. Make sure you are ready to hike up stairs and/or steep hills while visiting the castle. The history is worth the workout. Also, along the Royal Mike is Mary King's Close, another fascinating historical tour of the homes and streets underneath the city. Street performers along the Royal Mile included a bagpipes and an owl handler.

We spent part of Friday and most of Saturday walking up and down the Royal Mile. It you are looking for traditional souvenirs, you will find it here. Prices vary from shop to shop, I bought a stuffed animal of 6#s less than a store a few doors down. This area has a lot of great restaurants and all kinds of street performers.

So much to see and do from buying luxury clothing and top quality whisky I was shocked to see so many brands of malt whisky.. we made our adventure to Edinburgh castle took a ghost walk tour later that afternoon. The buskers were so funny and a joy to watch.. The Scottish people we came across on our 4 day visit here were the best people we have had the pleasure to meet... Thank you Scotland for the very warm welcome.. food, location, people, transport, historical buildings were just fantastic .. see you again Very soon 👍😎

During the Festival Fringe, this place is lively and buzzing. Great vibes. Seek out the street food places to avoid getting shafted by the marked up prices in regular haunts.

This may be one of the most gorgeous stretches of road in the entire world. A mile of walkable cobblestone extends from the gate of Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Abbey, at the base of Arthur's Seat, a rocky promontory on the eastern fringes of the city. In between, you will marvel at the breath-taking gothic architecture, an uncountable number of museums, galleries, cafés, pubs, restaurants and shops, purveying the entire spectrum of goods for which Scotland is best known: tartan plaids, whiskey, bagpipes, swords, heraldic iconography, cashmere clothing and accessories, and more. Oh, and you'll find several other hidden, historical landmarks, oddities and other interesting little secrets, if you dare to venture into the various alleys, tunnels and cloisters along the way down. This is the reason you came to Edinburgh in the first place, and the memories of your experience here will be those that will stick with you the longest. History, heritage, pride: it's all here, on display, enshrined in the glory and majesty of its authenticity. Alba gu bràth!

Absolutely beautiful old part of the city . Loads of little pubs and cafes mingled with great history and friendly people . The castle atop the hill is an obvious highlight but every hidden nook and cranny offers something new (old?)to be discovered. I will return here without a doubt .

Last time in Edinburgh we came here for a walk. Loved it. So naturally we came back this time around. There was a festival going on in town. And the streets were packed. And the Royal Mile so much that there really wasn't a chance to walk. People squeezing, pushing, rushing. No fun at all. Shop entrances blocked with people standing in the streets. There was just no way to enjoy any of it or to do a little shopping. Of course, the Royal Mile is a must-do for visitors. Especially for first timers. And with less people we would have stayed and enjoyed it as well. As we did before a few years ago. But this time we just stayed a few minutes and left due to the overcrowded streets. Surely some spots worth checking out if you arrive on a quiet day: Castlehill and Edinburgh Castle, the Scotch Whisky Experience, Tolbooth Kirk or the mighty St. Giles Cathedral. We'll check the Royal Mile again next time in Edinburgh of course. Maybe we get lucky.

Engaged Couple; we stayed just off the Royal Mile; but the Railway & attractions were all within walking distance. The Royal Mile has numerous bars, restaurants and landmarks to interest anyone...

A lovely little walk, you're surrounded by so many beautiful buildings & you can literally feel the history as you slowly make your way down the cobbled road. The street is lined with cute little cafés, pubs and Scottish gift shops so there's no excuse not to visit and grab a little keepsake. We visited when the fringe was on, so if you'd like to avoid major crowds I'd advise coming at an alternative time! But the bustling atmosphere is incredibly lively and adds to the magic of the city!

Absolutely gorgeous place to feel Edinburgh vibes. If you're in the city during Fringe festival you can catch a lot of street magicians, jugglers, mime artists on Royal Mile. Lots of pubs and cafes to catch a breath when you're tired of walking around the city.

Long road leading up to Edinburgh Castle. Always busy, lovely shops, particularly if you want souvenirs or whisky. If you're not fit or have trouble walking, I'd suggest going g downhill and not up or better still, take a break in one of the many pubs/ bars.

Great place to visit, we were lucky as when we visited it was Fringe week so the mile was full of acts taking place creating a wonderful atmosphere, lots to see and do with plenty of places to visit including St Giles Cathedral

Worth a visit. Loved our time walking up and down, popping into shops and cafes for bites to eat. Even with the fringe crowd, the ambiance felt great and joyful. We have visited multiple times during our trip. Keep your eyes peeled the nooks and crannies off this road for added delight! We stumbled on the writers museum and went in to learn a bit. Did the same with other museums along this stretch as well.

Our trip coincided with the Fringe festival - place was mobbed! Otherwise, an experience walking up/ down the famous mile and admire the Edinburgh Castle. Lots of street performers, souvenir shops and restaurants dotted along the street. Tip: don't just buy from the first souvenir shop on the top of the mile! We noticed that shops further down along the mile were selling at cheaper prices! Would imagine that the atmosphere is slightly less hectic and more enjoyable outside the Fringe festival season (which happens the whole month of August)!

Really beautiful street views. We went there during Fringe festival, it was quite crowded during day time towards the castle. But the buildings alongside were quite amazing. Somehow we experienced quite low mobile internet connection around this area.

The most lively and great area overflowing with tourists, few historic buildings and the way to the Edinburg castle. Restaurants coffee shops, souvenir shops, street performers etc make this the most visited and must visit places of Edinburg.

Here for fringe. Architecture wonderful. Loved the buildings, quirky ginnels, and the history. Loads tourist shops and plenty of places to dine. However, I couldn't get in to see the castle.

The main artery of the old city of Edinburgh. Linking the city castle with Holyrood house palace, the street is lines with historical gems such and the city cathedral, the old parliament house, the museum of optical illusions, the edinburgh city museum, and many.more, not counting the endless shops, cafes, restaurants, street shows, colorful homeless people and an endless supply of kilt wearing bagpipe players. Anything from mainstream to fringe, old to current, you will find on the royal mile.

You can't visit Edinburgh without coming here some of the architecture is just mesmerising, if only walls and buildings could talk they would probably have some amazing tales to tell.

  • 4/5 Matt G. 2 years ago on Google
Picturesque street to walk down with loads of boutique shops and scotland souvenir shops. Id recommended walking from the castle towards Holyrood as its down hill, and then you can get a bus back!

Nice steady mile walk from the bottom Queens Gate opposite the Scottish government building to the top of Edinburgh Castle. Along the way there are different monuments that you will embrace. Most attractions are nearby such as St Mary's underground walk and Edinburgh dungeon.

  • 4/5 Joanne J. 2 years ago on Google
Stunning architecture lines the streets to Edinburgh Castle. The streets are buzzing with many people and tourists and plenty of souvenir shops, pubs and street performers can be found here. It is a spectacular area to walk through and explore. I would recommend having an umbrella nearby if you plan on exploring the area as there aren’t many roofs covering the streets or walkways.

  • 5/5 Johnniewon 2 years ago on Google
Interesting historical street. Loads of character. With interesting stories. It is a tourist trap, but who cares. If you want anything resembling traditional Scottish clothing, food and drink. This is where to be.

  • 4/5 M L. 1 year ago on Google
The Royal Mile is at the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town, with Edinburgh Castle at its head (to the west) and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at its foot (to the east). The name comes from its tradition as a processional route for kings and queens for the last 500 years. The length which measures 1.81 km is approximately one Scots mile long, which is longer than an English mile but hasn't been used since the eighteenth century.

Very busy in the day time but nice and quite at night. Lovely area to walk in, but do wear comfortable shoes as the roads are not all even. Lots of shops on the road to get unique items but do make sure to compare with the other shops to get a good price.

Amazingly well preserved historical site. Rich of details and culture, instagramable pictures wherever you point your camera. Beautiful during sunny days, rain and even at fog nights. There are so many gift shops which I tried really hard to control the temptation of buy everything.

Within a block of the Royal Mile there is so much to see and do, if you like Scottish history and culture. The museums and historical sites are at every turn, if you take your time to explore the area before and take your time to explore during your walk. Don't be in too big of a hurry or expect to be spoonfed.

Love this beautiful place. 😍 The Royal Mile (Scottish Gaelic: Am Mìle Rìoghail) is a succession of streets forming the main thoroughfare of the Old Town of the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. The term was first used descriptively in W M Gilbert's Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century (1901), "...with its Castle and Palace and the royal mile between", and was further popularised as the title of a guidebook by R T Skinner published in 1920, "The Royal Mile (Edinburgh) Castle to Holyrood(house)". The Royal Mile runs between two significant locations in the royal history of Scotland: Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. The total length of the streets between the Castle and the Palace is almost exactly a Scots mile (1.81 km), hence the name. The streets which make up the Royal Mile are (west to east) Castlehill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street, the Canongate and Abbey Strand. The Royal Mile is the busiest tourist street in the Old Town, rivalled only by Princes Street in the New Town.

Great place to visit. Loads of shops bars and restaurants. The fringe festival is held here every August. That's great to see. You can get a hop on hop off bus for £10 and do a tour of the city. It takes you right up to the castle. Great place to visit. Wavely Station is where you get of on the train right in centre of Princess street.

The Royal Mile in Edinburgh is a stunning strip lined with historic buildings and cobbled roads. Advocates Close and Mary Kings Close can be found here. It is also a meeting point for numerous ghost tours. The Mile is close to Edinburgh Waverley train station, Edinburgh Castle, The Scottish National Gallery and much, much more.

  • 5/5 Teresa H. 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful and breathtaking. No matter which way you go the skyline is dominated by Edinburgh Castle. If you ever get the chance to visit Edinburgh go.

  • 5/5 derek n. 1 year ago on Google
Enjoy the Gotlic architecture around you when walking along the Royal Mile - with Edinburgh Castle on one end and the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the other. I googled, it is a 1.9km ~ 1.18 miles walk. :)

  • 4/5 Sunny G. 11 months ago on Google
A very busy road with a lot of tourists. On one end of the road is the Edinburgh Castle and to the other is the Holyrood Palace but one can experience a lot of attractions in between. A lot of souvenir shops and restaurants. You can enjoy almost any kind of dishes. Lovely area and the railway station is just a few mins walk from this road.

  • 5/5 Craig 10 months ago on Google
Great place to visit and spend a few hours walking about and visiting all the historic buildings, whisky tasting classes and other Scottish doings in and around the area. The castle is also even more impressive in real life than the images. A must see 👀

  • 5/5 dinesh v. 10 months ago on Google
The royal mile is a must see place if you are in Edinburgh. The vibe was awesome. If you go a little early you can click photos when its not over crowded, but the mile is beautiful only when there are lots of people around you, that gives you a different buzz

  • 5/5 Nate H. 10 months ago on Google
The Royale Mile has something for everyone. Pubs, Restaurants, Cathedral, Inns/Hotels and live performers of high quality all around. The shops are not too over priced considering it is such a tourist location. You can eat at a different place every night and not eat at the same place twice. Edinburgh Castle of course is the main attraction to visit. You could easily spend your entire day on the mile with family, friends or even solo. I would also recommend riding a tour bus your first day so you can get a feel of the many options of places ro visit.

  • 5/5 Foto M. 11 months ago on Google
Too crowded. But really lovely. The old town is amazing. Shopping, eating, you should go there and see everything. Mile is only a street. You walk 20 min from one side to the other ,where you find the entrance for the castle. Few roads around it are very beautiful and full with restaurants ,coffees and shops.
