A
hospital
(plural:
hospitals)
is
a
health
care
institution
that
provides
treatment
to
patients
with
specialized
medical
and
nursing
staff
and
medical
equipment.[2]
The
best
known
type
of
hospital
is
the
general
hospital,
which
usually
has
an
emergency
department
to
treat
urgent
health
problems
ranging
from
fire
and
accident
victims
to
a
heart
attack.
A
district
hospital
is
usually
the
main
health
care
facility
in
its
area,
with
a
large
number
of
beds
for intensive
care
and
additional
beds
for
patients
requiring
long-term
care.
Specialized
hospitals
include
trauma
centres,
rehabilitation
hospitals,
children's
hospitals,
hospitals
for
the
elderly,
and
hospitals
to
deal
with
special
medical
needs
such
as
psychiatric
treatment
and
some
categories
of
diseases.
Specialized
hospitals
can
help
reduce health
care
costs compared
to
general
hospitals.[3]
The teaching
hospital combines
helping
people
with
teaching
to
medical
and
nursing
students.
A
medical
facility
smaller
than
a
hospital
is
often
called
a
clinic.
Hospitals
have
a
range
of
departments
(eg surgery,
urgent
care)
and
specialist
units
such
as cardiology.
Some
hospitals
have
outpatient
departments
and
some
have
treatment
units
for chronic
diseases.
Common
support
units
include:
Pharmacy,
Pathology,
and
Radiology.
Hospitals
are
typically
funded
by
the
public
sector,
health
organizations
(both
for-profit
and
non-profit),
health
insurance
companies,
or
charities,
including
direct
charitable
donations.
Historically,
hospitals
were
often
founded
and
funded
under
religious
orders,
or
by
charitable
individuals
and
leaders.[4]
Today,
hospitals
are
staffed
by
a
large
number
of
specialist
doctors,
surgeons,
nurses
and
healthcare
practitioners,
whereas
in
the
past
this
work
was
carried
out
by
members
of
established
religious
institutions
or
volunteers.
However,
there
are
several
Catholic
religious
orders,
such
as
the
Alexians
and
the
Congregation
of
the
Bon
Secours
Sisters,
that
still
focus
on
hospitals
in
the
late
1990s,
and
several
other
Christian
denominations,
including
the
Methodists
and
Lutherans,
also
operate
hospitals.[5]
According
to
the
original
meaning
of
the
English
word,
hospitals
were
originally
"places
of
hospitality",
and
this
meaning
is
still
preserved
in
the
names
of
some
institutions
such
as
the
Royal
Chelsea
Hospital,
established
in
1681
as
a
retirement
and
nursing
home
for
veteran
soldiers.
