This ancient, historical bridge - in Kafr El-Zayat - is the one under which Prince Ahmed Rifaat bin Ibrahim Pasha drowned, because the train conductor did not notice that the bridge was open for a ship to cross, so the King of Egypt went to his brother, who was ten years younger than him, Khedive Ismail.

Initially, the railway was constructed in 1853 in two stages, the first from “Alexandria - Kafr El-Zayat”, and from “Kafr El-Zayat - Cairo”, and the Rosetta Branch separated the two links, and the “Robert Stevenson” Company, which established the Egyptian Railway, established a berth in Rasheed branch, and its crane transports the cars of the train coming from Alexandria to Cairo and vice versa, and transports them on a ferry to the second mainland. The train cars, which were 3 cars at the beginning of operation, are reassembled, and there was one trip daily for passengers and another for goods, as there were no bridges at that time. On May 15, 1858, during the return of Prince Ahmed Rifaat from Alexandria and while the train was crossing the Rashid branch in Kafr El-Zayat, the royal carriage was lifted over the ferryboat, with Prince Ahmed Rifaat Pasha, Prince Abdel Halim, and some courtiers inside it, due to the ferryboat’s imbalance, and the carriage fell into the ground. The Nile River, and Prince Abdel Halim survived by swimming to the banks of the Nile, while Prince Ahmed Rifaat Pasha died by drowning inside the sunken train car, where it was said at the time that “due to the size of his body, he was unable to get out of it.”
