signs of a very volcanic past, this part of the western desert is called the black desert (الصحراء السوداء) which starts from around Bahariya and continues South for a while, is littered with black volcanic rocks. The black desert is very interesting and is even more interesting when contrasted with the other areas of the desert between the oases.

The black desert is very strange. I enjoyed walking around it and climbing some if the mountains and looking at this weird natural creation. Dont forget to wear caps, sunglasses and sun screen because it is hot and hard there. You can spend around an hour there it would be enough.

The Black Desert, also known as the Farafra Black Desert, is another fascinating desert region located in the Farafra Depression of Egypt, not far from the White Desert. It is named for the dark-colored volcanic rock formations that dominate the landscape, creating a stark contrast to the nearby White Desert. Key features and information about the Black Desert in Farafra, Egypt: 1. Location: The Black Desert is situated in the Farafra Depression, one of the oases of the Western Desert of Egypt. It is located in the New Valley Governorate, approximately 550 kilometers (340 miles) southwest of Cairo. 2. Geological Formation: The Black Desert gets its name from the abundant black volcanic rocks scattered throughout the landscape. These rocks are remnants of ancient volcanic activity that occurred millions of years ago. The volcanic material, including basalt, basaltic tuffs, and volcanic ash, has given the desert its dark appearance. 3. Contrasting Landscapes: The Black Desert is geographically close to the White Desert, and the two regions offer contrasting landscapes. While the White Desert is known for its white chalk formations, the Black Desert's dark volcanic rocks create an entirely different visual experience. 4. Dunes and Sand: The Black Desert features extensive sand dunes, offering a classic desert experience with endless stretches of rolling sand dunes, which are a common feature of the Western Desert. 5. Desert Safaris: As with the White Desert, the Black Desert is a popular destination for desert safaris and camping adventures. Tour operators in Farafra offer trips that often combine visits to both the Black and White Deserts, allowing visitors to experience the diversity of landscapes in the area. 6. Farafra Oasis: The Black Desert is located in the vicinity of the Farafra Oasis, which provides a green contrast to the surrounding arid desert. The oasis is inhabited, and visitors can explore the local culture and hospitality of the people living in this remote region. 7. Starry Nights: The Black Desert, like the White Desert, offers excellent opportunities for stargazing due to its remote location with minimal light pollution. Similar to the White Desert, the Black Desert is a unique and mesmerizing destination in Egypt, attracting travelers seeking an immersive experience in the stunning and varied desert landscapes of the Western Desert. Exploring both the Black and White Deserts offers a fascinating glimpse into the geological wonders and natural beauty of Egypt's desert regions.

Its soooo beautiful. It is volcano's lava. When you approach the mountain the lava are balck rocks. When you start walking up the mountain and you approach the summit, you realize that the volcano's lava made the rocks all pressed one against each other. Something phenominal. You just have to wear good climing boots or shoes. Some rocks are slippery. Must be careful. It is the highest summit in the black desert. I have never immagined that a desert can be or have a magical view

The Black Desert is an area of volcano-shaped and widely separated mounds in western Egypt, stretching for around 30 kilometres (19 miles) between the White Desert in the south and the Bahariya Oasis in the north. Basalt sills cover the majority of its mounds, giving them their distinctive black appearance. The Black Desert's mounds, which may reach heights of 100 metres (328 feet), vary in size, composition, height, and shape, with some being black due to iron quartzite and others being more reddish due to iron sandstone. Volcanic hills on the fringes of the Black Desert show that black volcanic dolerite erupted 180 million years ago, indicating the Jurassic era.

What a placeeee!!!! Seems out of the world. About a six hrs drive from Cairo one can reach this place via Bahariya oasis. Mesmerizing, scintillating, awesome - can't be defined in words - probable volcanic eruption in this place has led to the formation of such a unique landscape. Stand in the glaring sun, stare and absorb.

This desert is fantastic. Despite the great effort required to reach the top of some mountains, it is well worth going there to contemplate the surrounding area. It is too beautiful. A great lonely place to reflect on life and contemplate the nature and beauty of God's creation.
