My daughter, who is studying in Florence, has been vomiting food and liquids for a couple of weeks. She was hoping that it is some sort of a stomach flu or a bug and that it will go away by itself. It didn't. Since she has not been able to keep food nor liquids in her stomach for extensive period of time, loosing energy and weight and after experiencing another day of heavy vomiting, she presented herself at the ER around 9 pm last night. The doctor did not want to examine her, looked at her from top to bottom a few times and concluded she is a drug addict and sent her away...to some institution that is dealing with drug addicts (his words) We have now found a private hospital for her to be treated, get blood tests done and a proper medical care. Unfortunately she did not catch your name - but i am sure if you are reading this you will recognize your poor behavior! SHAME SHAME SHAME on you "Doctor"! You should be thrown out of this profession and leave this job to people who really care! Ps. to whomevers is looking for urgent medical care, avoid this place at all cost. There are plenty of good doctors and hospitals in Florence.

my son studied in Italy for the fall of 2018. He went to this hospital's ER for severe abdominal pain. They made him wait for hours before taking care of him. By the time they got around to helping him, his appendix had ruptured and he was septic. The surgery was much more difficult than it should have been. He ended up hospitalized for a week. He left covered in bed bug bites.

I went to take a blood test 2 weeks ago, all was well. and I came back today for taking my blood test’s result. And I definitely feel racism from a reception woman who working at Centro Prelievi. There was no one beside me, I just had to wait until they finished their chatting. And finally one italian man told me that I just could go directly to the reception due to the fact that they were doing nothing but talking each other. So I approached her and said “Buongiorno!”. She ignored me but just told me “DOCUMENTO!”. I was so surprised by her behavior. And when I recieved my result and I said again “Grazie!”…still she ignored me. Right after I left the reception of Centro prelievi, one Italian man approached her..she totally said “Buongiorno!”. What was that all about?? Because I’m asian, she could just ignored me like that?? Shame on you, woman! And please fire her as soon as possible! Who does that racism these days?! I went there today between 11:45-12:05pm. Every staffs are very friendly and nice except this woman with all her racism attitude!

Excellent care, kind and considerate staff, even though I spoke no Italian and the ER was busy. The doctors were very sharp and knowledgeable, and accurately diagnosed a subtle and unusual injury very quickly. I had an immobilizing cast on my ankle and was on my way within a few hours, for an out-of-pocket $10! (I did have to buy crutches at a local pharmacy, $35, [same ones in US when I got home - $200+]). Follow-up medical treatment here in Florida ran well into five figures, to determine that the Italian physicians were correct, and there wasn't any real further treatment. Who says socialized medicine is such a bad thing?

As others have stated, if you are American, your care is likely going to be rationed. Doctors who are genuinely unkind and rude. Of note, they also speak very little English. Almost impossible to have a conversation. Also, they don’t accept travelers insurance or insurance In general. Bill was 435 euros which was paid on the spot. Will have to submit receipt to insurance yourself. Don’t believe the hype of these other reviewers.

What happens when you are visiting Florence and your appendix bursts? If you are lucky (like me), you are taken to Santa Maria Nuova hospital - the oldest hospital still active in Florence, Italy, and in the world. Founded in 1288 the hospital has been serving patients without missing a single day for over 700 years – even during plagues, wars, and natural disasters. Martin Luther was treated here and Leonardo da Vinci used to perform autopsies for his anatomical studies behind these walls. Since their times they renovated a little bit (LOL) and today, Santa Maria Nuova is the only hospital in Italy to have achieved the ESO-Angels Diamond Status Award, making it a model hospital for the highest medical standards in Europe. My surgery was complicated due to the infection, but went very well. The hospital is modern and clean, doctors were extremely knowledgable, nurses very skilled and exceedingly friendly, everybody spoke English, and I am on a good path to recovery. For sure, a different kind of experience that Lonely Planet doesn't write about.

Yeah this place really sucks I was waiting there for ages and they didn’t do anything. Considering I was coughing up blood and I had a broken rib. they just kept getting confused and I had to keep explaining what was wrong with me over and over again. like 100 times I’d rather you know... fall off a cliff again than come back here again.

One of the worst experience I could ever imagine. I would rather prefer to be treated by a quack then go there. One expect the doctors and nurses to be empath or atleast show some decency rather here i found them to be rude and did not care about their patients. I have had better healthcare in third world country then here. My friend was suffering and was bedridden for more than a week. Called him an ambulance who was a nice guy and took him to the hospital with care. Upon reaching hospital it was never ending misery with my friend literally crying his eyes out with pain but the nurses show no empathy or emotion to atleast administer him some first aid and said that this is not an emergency case. IDK what they expect as an emergency case. Prolly a person who is D*ad is considered an emergency case. They should prolly close the hospital and transfer its funds to morgues atleast there it would be useful. This is been done to a person who has italian health insurance I cant imagine what foreigners go through in this god forsaken place

A miserable experience. I was here for stomach pains in mid-May and will never return. The staff was rude and dismissive to my issues and after charging me $100 to misplace an IV in my arm, they just told me to go to another hospital because they could not diagnose me. Also the WHOLE time I was in the hospital a woman next to me was moaning in severe pain and the staff was laughing and joking around rather than attending to her. Incredibly frustrating, lots of waiting, if you are in a serious emergency this is not the place to go.

Went to ER with what I thought was bad cold. Very through and efficient exam. Turned out to be severe bacterial pneumonia. Admitted to the hospital for 10 nights. Care was excellent and through. Included CAT scan and multiple EKG's. Very pleasant staff. Highly recommended.

I want to add my comment to the other positive ones because those positive comments are the ones who contributed to the hope I needed to take my sick and unable to breathe husband to this place. We got a Uber and arrived there at 4am. There was a police officer or security guard who showed us the button to press for assistance. He pushed that button and a nurse immediately came out. My husband was the only one allowed to go in, and the police officer respectfully showed me the waiting area where I could have a sit. They all spoke English and the ones who didn’t were patiently trying to explain. My husband had some blood work done and was sent right out to sit with me. A nurse came 20 minutes later and took him for some more blood work, x rays, and tests. He was nebulized and administered medicine. The nurse came out to let me know what they were doing to him. Husband was sent outside to wait for doctor to arrive. When doctor arrived he gave him the good news that he didn’t have pneumonia but had acute broncchitis. He prescribed some medicine and was sent home. We were treated professionally and with respect. Nurses and doctors were busy attending other sick people, but that didn’t stop them from being kind to us no matter how we looked like or our situation. While waiting outside we came across inpatient patients yelling at nurses, at the security guards and over all loosing it. They definitely altered the peace of the other patients waiting in the waiting area and that of the patients inside and hardworking personnel. Husband was telling me he saw something similar inside where a patient was yelling at nurses and nurses were yelling back to try to make them understand. The facilities have immaculate clean bathrooms people in the waiting area can use, and well supplied vending machines also. Chairs to wait and plenty of outlets to charge your phone. The waiting area was a bit messy, and people should be more responsible and pick up their meses. In the morning, we saw a lady come out with a cleaning cart to wash the floors and pick up garbage. We are so grateful this place exists, grateful for all the personnel who make it funcional until today. You’re truly angels and heroes. We experienced pure goodness. $400 euros well spent. And the medicine they prescribed ended being $25 euros. I hope this review serves anyone in desperation like we were.

I’m Questioning this hospital's credibility, especially in light of criteria for emergencies and the accuracy of the 24/7 claim. The professionalism at this hospital is concerning, as they assert that certain issues are not deemed serious enough for treatment, leaving one to question the purpose of being a 24/7 facility.

Some nurses and doctors are a joke and rude lady at the entrance. Even if youre italian i guess in a hospital you got to learn English especially in a veryyyyyyyyyyyy touristic city.

From the moment you step in the door to when you sit down with the doctor, interactions were unnecessarily rude and unprofessional. With male doctor Francesco Prosperi Iovi in particular, he went out of his way to be less than kind, to say the absolute least. Would not recommend receiving care from here.

Went to emergency for extreme and very painful swelling of my right foot probably due to insect bite. The nurses and Dr. Bitossi were top notch. I was triaged, admitted, seen and treated within 30 minutes of my arrival. Dr. Bitossi was very thorough and administered an ultrasound to check the vascular system of my legs and feet. A fun fact too: Leonardo himself interned at this hospital. The building is of course beautiful on the outside and very modern inside. I’m from Canada where our healthcare/hospital system resembles the third world in comparison. This is an example of how an advanced country should deliver healthcare services. Thank you to everyone at Ospedale Santa Maria Nuova!

I Went there because of a herniated disc in my spine. I was in excruciating pain to say the least. Waited alone on a stretcher for 6 hours and stared at the ceiling in a hallway. Not even a blanket to keep me from freezing. The nursing staff must have assumed that since i am not yet confident speaking in Italian, I must not be able to understand it, and proceeded to make fun of the way I was dressed while standing right next to me. I finally decided to hobble out on my own since it was apparent I was only there for the staff's amusement and not going to receive any actual care. An absolutely useless place if you are not Italian. I even had to remove my IV by myself. This place is a discriminatory hell and I was forced to trade my tour of the Accademia Gallery for this completely traumatic experience. Say all the bad things you want about American health care, but even an uninsured person would NEVER have close to this this experience at even the poorest hospital in the US. I have seen better medical care in homeless shelters and at the county fair. For all the money tourists bring to this city, you'd think they would treat you just a little better. They treated me like a 3rd world refugee and left me in a hallway to rot.

Admitted here and was not provided the Fit to Fly form to go back to the UK - this was in 2019. I have submitted emails asking for information about my stay which a UK specialist described as 'inconsistent'. No help over the phone or vis email to date but am seeking a Subject Access Request. Repeatedly hung up on before even asking for a SAR which is required under GDPR

Very. Clean, they stopped using towels after COVID19, so for now they’re using bed sheets (no shedding), The staff was very kind, friendly ,and all were helpful, everyone who treated me spoke English well, I was very impressed with the knowledge and caring of attending physicians (this is a teaching hospital). I found the experience was very revealing. It has been a while that I encountered such Respect and Care for the well-being and wellness of patients. Unfortunately we’re losing these traits in the US, not many Hospitals can claim all these accolades at once. Another detail, ( when I was able and allowed to eat),the food was Incredible, delicious, healthy, Wow! One negative thing, they need to place Screens in all windows, but I understand, it not being a priority for a Teaching hospital, that takes in every one and treats everyone with the same respect and dedication, regardless if you are Italian or not, regardless if you have medical insurance or not. Thanks for Caring, Thanks to all your staff, doctors, nurses, and all other staff working together to make people feel better soon. All in all, one of the best hospitals in the world!

I was here at the 20th of August. My foot was hurting, suspected I might have a fracture. An X-Ray was made and unfortunately I really did fracture it. Later got a cast put on me and advised what to do. Thanks to the EHIC card that I took with me all was free of charge. I have to say huge thanks to the Dr. and other personnel. The only downside I was there for roughly 4 hours. Of course, there were probably more serious cases than mine. But anyways, many thanks! From Latvia

I recently went under surgery at Ospedale Santa Maria Nuova and I literally had the best experience you can have in hospital. The people working there are just amazing, they're so kind and gentle that you actually feel comfortable. I wish I could have the chance to properly thank everyone's working there, they're just wonderful people.

My husband had an awful accident while reaching for his luggage on a train en route from Venice to Florence. He knew his leg was broken. We were transported via ambulance and ended up in the ER. I would like to thank VALENTIN and his amazing staff. What should have been a nightmare ended up as simply a not that great dream. Thank you to all of the folks in the ER that cared for my husband with LOVE and humanity. We will never forget you.

If I could give a lower rating I would. This is my first review of anything ever. My father arrived in the ER very early in the morning on the 23rd of December. After we were denied access to see him, he was not put into a bed in the ward until 24 plus hours later. No one was allowed to see him for that entire period. He had plenty of horrible stories about his treatment during his time in the ER by the staff. I was completely horrified. It is understandable they do not let family sit with patients in the ER as they are better able to treat them as poorly as they want to without repercussions. I cannot believe what my father had to say about his time there and I am horrified anyone would be treated as such while very sick, especially in a foreign country over the holidays. Absolutely insane.

Went with a fractured ankle, sustained whilst visiting Florence from UK. Reading these reviews I was worried, but don’t be! I saw triage, a doctor, x-ray and orthopaedic doctor and all spoke English to me and were very professional. The nurses were smiley and friendly even though it was a very busy place. Yes, you have to wait but it’s no big deal when others are worse. The cost was really reasonable. Thanks to all the doctors and nurses for your care.

Arrived with my daughter- young adult in the ER at 9:30 pm on Tuesday for allergic reaction to nut allergy. She was taken in immediately started on 2 liters of fluid. A few things no one at triage desk or security desk. Lucky for us another American was there told us where to buzz the staff. The MD only one on was good. I was not allowed inside with her. Some staff spoke little English. The remedy is invest in a program where you can offer 24 - 7 interpreting- simply done on a IPAD. It could save lives. So many Americans in Florence and others, should be a no brainer. Hospital administrator should also think about staffing housekeepers all day and night. It was a little dirty. You will be given discharge papers sent to a kiosk in the waiting area were you check out and pay your bill. 41 Euros for us. Overall good , my daughter is much better. This hospital ER needs be a few improvements to enhance a better experience for both Patient and family members. Many thanks to Dr Francesca Romana Ermíni for her skilled care

GRATEFUL FOR SUCH PHENOMENAL SERVICE I arrived at the emergency ward on the early morning of the 23rd of October with terrible respiratory problems and struggling to breathe. I was met by the staff at the entrance my details taken and immediately prioritised. I was nervous about my treatment as person of colour and a foreigner BUT every single nurse, doctor, porter and attendant acted in the highest professionalism and were truly kind, caring and considerate of my state. The doctor ran tests and I had to be admitted in the ICU ward. The level of thoroughness, efficiency, care and diligence was remarkable. Each test and blood sample was explained so I understood the process. I truly felt cared for and supported. I couldn't be more grateful to the entire staff that worked in the ER and ICU wards on the 23rd - 27th of October 2023, you not only saved my life but showed incredible compassion towards me. Thank you!!
