Splendid Basilica, one of the main ones in the city of Florence, built next to the Dominican convent. The numerous works of art collected here are fascinating, covering a large period of time from the mid-1400s onwards. There are many chapels, paintings, frescoes and liturgical furnishings preserved here. For a visit consider at least 3 hours of time! Not to be missed!

We had to queue for a long time in the heat outside with a disgusting smell whilst huge tourist groups went in. There was one person selling tickets who did not speak any English and just yelled at us in Italian. The signs are lying (in English at least) you cannot get a reduced ticket if you are 18. Entering the church, there is a staff member who picks and chooses who they think is dressed appropriately. Young women are made to wear hot blue coverings. At least these are provided for free but they are ridiculous. The Holy Trinity is currently covered by scaffolding for restoration, it says this on their website but not on signage before entry. There are about 10 steps leading up to see the painting, but there is another rude staff member charging €1,50 to go up them! Absolutely absurd as the entrance fee is already €7,50. Even the courtyard has a huge stage in it. It's hard to believe a church this important is unapologetically scamming their visitors with false signs and unnecessary charges. The grandness of the building can be felt from the outside, and there is far better artwork and architecture elsewhere. I'd only suggest going here if you are really desperate to experience the architecture first hand.

(Translated by Google) The Museum of Santa Maria Novella in Florence is housed in the ancient Dominican convent of the same name dating back to the 14th century. The Museum of Santa Maria Novella is annexed to the basilica of the same name, constituting one of the most prestigious monumental sites in the city of Florence due to the extraordinary quality of the numerous artistic masterpieces kept in it. The museum itinerary, prepared by the visiting itineraries, unfolds through the famous Green Cloister, by Paolo Uccello, frescoed in the 15th century and depicting scenes from the Old Testament. The Green Cloister takes its name from the dominant color of the fifteenth-century frescoes that make it up. It continues with the hall in the ancient Chapter of the convent also called the Cappellone degli Spagnoli since it was sold in the sixteenth century to the family of the wife of Duke Cosimo de 'Medici of Spanish origins, populated by splendid frescoes dating back to the fourteenth century by Andrea by Bonaiuto. Further on you pass into the Cappella degli Ubriachie in the halls of the then Refectory and Amphitheater where you can admire a permanent exhibition consisting of splendid stuccos framing as many unique frescoes by a student of Agnolo Gaddi dating back to the late fourteenth century, as well as precious fabrics period, furnishings, embroidery and clerical vestments among which the clerical habit of St. Thomas of Canterbury dating back to the sixteenth century stands out. All these objects belonged to the ancient treasure of the church of Santa Maria Novella.

(Translated by Google) It is a Church that has been forgotten in the tourist tour of Firenze, but it cannot be like that. The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is a work of art and has to be valued. A visit to this church is more than advisable. Through all the frescoes on its walls and its beautiful architecture, this church deserves your visit. It is also worth visiting its museum with works of art that are wonderful and that tell a story of Firenze through Dominican eyes.

(Translated by Google) There is no better way to visit the entire complex of Santa Maria Novella than to take a guided tour of the entire complex. In fact, annexed to the church are the buildings of the convent, with three monumental cloisters: the Green Cloister, the Cappellone degli Spagnoli and the refectory which are now part of the Museum of Santa Maria Novella. In the internal chapel of the convent, there is the interesting table of the Dominican effigies, the work of an anonymous master of the first half of the fourteenth century. The Green Cloister was built after 1350 by Fra Jacopo Talenti and is characterized by the frescoes by Paolo Uccello "on the green ground", hence the name of the cloister, from the first half of the 15th century: on three walls frescoes with "Stories of the Genesis "by Paolo Uccello and his circle (eastern side) and other artists (Stories of Abraham on the southern side and Stories of Jacob on the western side, of 1440-1450); it was restored in 1859, subsequently damaged and partially restored after the flood of 1966. On the northern side of the Green Cloister there is the Chapter Room or Cappellone degli Spagnoli, also by fra 'Talenti (1343-1345), entirely frescoed by Andrea Bonaiuti around 1367-1369; the cycle, in an excellent state of conservation thanks to a widespread restoration, depicts in various scenes the role of the Dominicans in the fight against heresy. In 1566 the Grand Duke Cosimo I assigned the room to the religious functions of the Spaniards, hence the name, following his wife Eleonora of Toledo. Also from the Green Cloister there is access to a passage, which is called the four doors, because it has one door on each side: in addition to the door to the Green Cloister, it has one for the Great Cloister, one for the upper floors at the bottom of a ladder and one for the antirefectory. The Great Cloister, however, remodeled in the years 1562-1592 by the architect Giulio Parigi on commission from Eleonora da Toledo, was frescoed by Florentine artists of the 16th and 17th centuries (Poccetti, Santi di Tito, Cigoli, Alessandro Allori, etc. ) with Stories of Christ and Dominican saints; it was the seat of the marshal and brigadieri carabinieri school and today reopened to the public. The old library opens up, the former papal apartments, of which only the chapel of the Popes remains, and the majestic former dormitory, with three long naves supported by monolithic pillars. All of this is now completely open to visitors and even more wonderfully illustrated by the boys of MUSE, a THANK YOU to the super guide FRANCESCA!

The whole claustro was pretty but one of the staff members was rude and seemed annoyed that we were using a tripod to take pics which made literally no sense.

This is one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever visited, its architecture and design is stunning. It has a lovely museum as well to check out. Its collection is very well kept, preserved and displayed. Theres lots to do and see in and around this area. Theres also some of the most famous historical people from the Florentine region buried here. I really enjoyed my time spent here, and I would definitely recommend visiting amazing church and its museum.

Simply a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and an unexpected interior/exterior which makes its usability even more complete. You would never know it from how the complex looks after the chaos at the station exit. Here too you should return again and again given the closed parts, others under restoration and inaccessible, others still visible under restoration by paying a supplement to the ticket (Trinity by Masaccio) Advice: book the very good audio guide because you risk not finding any available and arrive with a ticket already purchased online if you want to skip the queue. Thank you Florence, coming back every time is never enough.
