Used to really enjoy going to this gym when I would come home from the military. They used to give a partial membership which was affordable and made sense considering I would only be home for a couple of weeks at a time. Just tried to do that same type of membership and was told by the supervisor that it isn’t possible and that it would be $80 for the remainder of December and all of January, even though I would only be around a couple of days in January. I’m not sure if they make up the rules as the go or what but they don’t seem to have any good programs for service members. Not military friendly, would not recommend to service members or veterans.

This is a good place if you just want to work out, but it's hit or miss with swimming. The family pool unexpectedly closes at least once a week because of chlorine issues and soap in the locker rooms aren't consistently filled.

Update 9/2019: For the last month or so I've noticed a disturbing trend at this YMCA. During the mornings on Monday-Friday the staff at the front desk tend to lean politically to the right and intentionally turn one of the televisions to Fox News. It's disturbing because YMCA is a non-profit establishment and the employees shouldn't reinforce their political beliefs on patrons. Despite many requests from many YMCA members, the television always starts the morning with Fox News. This is unfortunate. 6/2019: This place is pretty good place to workout and swim. If you get there early enough you can always get a swim lane or machine. During the summers many kids start coming around 6:00 to take up the pools. The televisions in the morning tend to always play Fox News and Christmas music is on during the holidays. Overall, a good place if you want to workout in a clean facility.

Update: arm pad replaced on bicep curl machine. Thank you! Still a few drain flies in the shower area. Whatever you’re doing is working, but keep at it! Cleaning protocols still not posted (to my knowledge). Locker locks are confusing. It’s so easy to lock yourself out. Saw teens goofing around while supposedly working out. One appeared to be under 16 without a wrist band. Better supervision May be needed in the workout area. Would love if you would ban cellphones in the workout area. So many sitting on machines on their phones: not working out. Original review: I like Sage YMCA! (There is no other Y in Chicagoland to match.) First request: repair worn out pads on exercise equipment. I was told several weeks ago that this would be done soon. How long is "soon"? Second request: Transparency on cleaning protocols. Suggestion: post the protocols on line and on bulletin boards. How often are the hot tub, pool, steam, and sauna deep cleaned? Locker rooms: how often are they deep cleaned? I brought to the attention of the front desk that the shower area had at least a dozen drain flies on the walls and flying around when I was there (just the shower I was using). He indicated that they were aware of the problem and that it had been reported to management. I would like to know that some mitigation effort will be taken within a few days, not weeks. Is anyone reading these posts? I would love to see a response from management. Thank you!

Pretty good place to workout. I do have an issue though, and it relates to the mornings. The Y opens at 5 am and many members get there about 5 minutes before opening to get a swim lane or just to workout. The problem is that the parking lot lights don't turn on until after 5 in the morning. There have been a number of times where I almost witnessed or have been in a car accident because of the darkness. Please consider turning the parking lot lights on earlier.

Great clean YMCA. More updated facility with a good variety of work out classes to attend. There’s something for everyone. I took one star off for less than friendly front desk staff and the inability to communicate with one another to fix a simple problem. I went in trying to get a membership card for my son because they forgot to assign one when I enrolled. Front seat ladies made like I was lying and had to find the paperwork to “verify” everything I was saying. They could find it, took 2 ppl over 10 minutes than when getting the card said we needed to take a picture. Waited for that as well only to find out it didn’t work. Got home and the membership card didn’t work as well! I understand things can happen but dealing with 2 to unpleasant ladies made it all the more challenging.

I was super excited that the Sage Y opened up about a month ago or so and just recently started to come back. I was disappointed last week to see staff not wearing masks correctly. It's really odd to observe how staff closely interact with patrons and disregard the rules to cover the month and face with a covering. I feel less safe going to this Y because of this concern.

The disc golf course here is pretty fun, despite being mostly really short shots. Some specific shot shapes are required on some of the wooded holes, which adds a bit of challenge. The wooded holes are quite overgrown right now, though. The course could use tee pads and tee signs, and a bit of upkeep.

A few months ago the staff decided to turn music on in the fitness and weight lifting area. But it is very loud, especially in the weight area. Complaints were made to staff who told us that management did not care, a letter to the editor fo the local newspaper was made because of a lack of response from the management and additional complaints continue to be made. Yet, Sage YMCA DOES NOT CARE! The music is so loud that even with headphones you can hear it and one can no longer listen to audiobooks. There is no good reason to play music on the PA. People that want to listen to music bring their own. It is just loud and disturbing. The ironic thing is that if a member were playing music they would be in violation of the loud music policy, but the staff exempts itself from a policy that it hold paying member to! Join another gym, Sage YMMCA does not care about you or your experience!

The Y used to be a good place to go to for a hard workout and recovery swim...until I was falsely accused and wrongfully banned for "pleasuring myself" in the hot tub when my arms were in the water for a short period of time like a few minutes before I kept them out. It's common sense to not do wrong things like that in public...it's a hot tub where muscle relief is the purpose of it! Hope the staff's ways have changed, and a shame that this YMCA lost a loyal customer...

Friendly customer service. Much better prices than surroundings fitness centers. Offers fitness classes, swim lessons, open swim, personal training. Has a kids zone so you can work out in peace.

It’s a great facility with great staff. Unfortunately the referral program is a sham. If the person that refers you, leaves, your price goes up - you then need to refer someone else to regain the discount. The kids zone is never open for kids under 3 and rarely open for kids over 3. Family swim area is so small and cramped, it’s not enjoyable. So, for $95 a month, we simply couldn’t justify the cost. I fear Edge fitness will hurt Sage more than COVID ever did. Sad to leave, but their strict price policy lost me. If you do join, do the body pump classes, the instructors and workout is great!

The building was partially rebuilt in 2014, and now features a number of quality new amenities and athletic facilities to make use of. They have an Olympic-size pool with stadium-style seating for swimming competitions, several large workout rooms, a high-quality cycling studio, top-of-the-line equipment throughout the building, a smoothie bar, and many other features. The old Family Pool remains, but otherwise, most all of the facilities are thoroughly modern. The gym has a comfortable seating area with a real fireplace as well.

i was in the sauna “i’m 15”and the lifeguard came in all aggressive saying that i need to be 18. but the guy at the front desk said you have to be at least 13 years old. and i told her that and she got more mad and and kicked us out.

So far good. Zero issue. Clean, bright, and almost no crowd - maybe has something to do with time of the day I usually go. The competition pool is great for casual lap swimmer. The prices for the family is very reasonable. The child care while you work out is a huge bonus!

First time there during pandemic, this place truly knows how to keep their customers safe. Temp check at entry, lots of places to hand sanitize, social distancing guidelines followed. I feel safe going there. 😊

The YMCA is a corner stone for a healthy community. As long as you read the schedules call in ahead of time to make sure swimming pool is staffed and respect the fact the Y has classes that encourage community that might infringe on individual time at the amenities you will have an excellent experience! The staff is top notch, the p demic has really hurt staff headcount and member enrollment as well as class offerings so please be patient. The Y helps families of low income so it is much worth the membership. Great weight room and yoga studio. Excellent family and competition pool and also has good childcare as well.

Literally one of the worst aquatics department in the Chicago YMCA area. Even after renovations the pool is still unavailable for paying members.

Great location. Looks like they updated the building. Not on the nationwide program yet but they let me visit. The steam room was no joke. meaning it gets real hot. The steam room, sauna and hot tub are near the pool, communal. I didn't lift but I took a peek and there was no more than 5 barbells which is a little alarming. Overall great staff and facility. Definitely worth it.

Went out of way to be unwelcoming to a child with autism who simply wanted to use the swimming pool. The staff insisted he must pass a test to use pool , a test that an autistic child cannot pass DUE TO THEIR DISABILITY that prevents them from following standard instructions!! The parent asked for and was denied reasonable alternative accomdatuon to demonstrate proficiency in swimming. As a reminder The ADA guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with Autism in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications. The ADA was signed into law on July 26, 1990, by President George H.W. Bush. Shame on you!

Good atmosphere and clean and pleasant with a resort-like seating area - also had a PowerPlate vibration device like I needed. Staff are really good and parking, access from roads, etc. are convenient.

If you're thinking about joining here save your time and don't. Was told membership can be cancelled within 5 days and wont be charged for following months. They now say it was originally 5 business days until it was changed to 15 day last month... Plus front desk are extremely unprofessional. Forge or Edge I would highly recommend over this dump.

I never have had a good experience at any of the YMCA locations. The facility is normally dirty, the people at the front desk never are trained to have any information for the services that they offer, and the swimming instructors are never really that good. Pretty bummed that it still hasn't improved.

Nice facility with nice staff however a little greed going on with this outfit when I always thought YMCA was meant to bring a community together. I have a job that provides Cigna insurance with fitness direct which helps pay half of our monthly dues. Gf lost her job, but we’d like to still be able to stay fit but they wouldn’t even consider working with us or the third party. Elgin uses this program, can’t you? Please consider.

All in all it's a really nice place. Staff is friendly and the YMCA is always clean. If I'm nit picking I would like to see a full size basketball court someday. However I know that would require a renovation/expansion but may be worth it in the long run. Otherwise no complaints!

Very nice facility. Everything is clean and at the times I have gone there have always been plenty of machines available. The hot tub is nice because there is no hot tub at the foglia YMCA where I usually go. I’ve gone to a couple yoga classes there as well as a Zumba class and I’ve really liked both. The Zumba class really made me sweat! Friendly staff.

This facility has developed into a very nice family oriented health club. However, its popularity is one of its pitfalls given the facilty, locker rooms, and parking are a bit undersized during peak times. Although not 24 hours, the hours are quite extensive so avoiding peak times is quite easy. Its membership fees are really reasonable and they even offer scholarships to those families/individuals who require a bit of help with costs. There's a lot of programs available for both adults and kids, however a bit thin on offerings for teenagers. There's plenty of open swim times and always lifeguard staffed. The facility overall is clean and maintained but on occasion a bit slow on making the minor fixes to torn coverings on weight equipment, etc. There's free wifi that makes it easy for kids to do schoolwork while parents are exercising. They have a good childcare area but since no longer have young children, don't have details on that. There's also a snack bar that's adequate but a bit pricy. Plenty of open gym times as well but sometimes some of the basketball players forget they can't take over entire court during this time. Employees are very personable and the onsite personal trainers will always answer fitness questions and taking it one step further, can provide paid personal training for a very reasonable price. The only real serious issue I've seen is that lack of courtesy shown by the swim team participants who seem to think it's appropriate to flood the locker area of the locker rooms. The facility needs to make swim team coaches accountable for their teams and ban teams from using the pool if they cannot conduct themselves properly. The maintenance staff has enough to do than having to mop up after the swim teams. We've been members for several years now and are happy we made the switch over to the YMCA. Plus, the membership can be used reciprocal at other YMCAs in the area. Great benefit there.
