These ruins were spectacular. They are located at the top of Oppenheim- about a 5 minute walk from the city center. They are located right next to a vineyard and you have a beautiful view of the Katharina Cathedral along with the rest of the town. It appears that you can enter the ruins 24/7 with no entrance fee or any kind of barrier. It’s a great place to go for a visit with the family and children.

These are truly impressive ruins. Set on top of Oppenheim, the view of the Rhine Valley and the town are breathtaking. The vineyards surrounding the ruins only enhance the romantic atmosphere. On the weekends during the summer, there is wine tasting organized by local wineries. If in town, don't hesitate to hike up to this hoary site!

A great destination for a romantic walk in the evening... The castle itself was probably built in the early 13th century. The oldest surviving written mention of the "Reichsburg Oppenheim" comes from 1244. The castle burned down during the Oppenheim town fire in 1621 during the Thirty Years' War. It was only after the Thirty Years' War in 1668 that the castle received its present name "Burg Landskron". During the Palatinate War of Succession, French troops under Ezéchiel du Mas (Mélac) blew up the keep in 1689. In the years that followed, the citizens used the ruins as a quarry. In the 19th century the ruins became the property of the town of Oppenheim, which in 1875 built a viewing platform on the stump of the keep. In 1978 the castle was transferred to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Between 1990 and 1994, the state had the ruins extensively renovated and archaeologically examined.

Wow. What an awesome piece of history to see and experience. Thank you for preserving what remains so younger generations can see and read about Oppenheim's history. This is my daughter's family's history and worth the visit.
