A friend suggested carls and I'm so glad she did. I love an eatery with history and a locals favorite. Anytime I come to Fredericksburg I will definitely get a cone.

Overrated. This is one of those spots that the locals hype it up but its not that great. The ice cream itself is okay, its a small step above most fast food ice creams. But the price makes it not worth it, especially when they dont even fill up the entire cone. Ordered a large and most of the cone was empty. They basically only fill over the top. Paid over $5 for this? And they only take cash? No thanks

Absolutely amazing! We were in town for 5 days and visited twice. The first time I had a vanilla cone which was so good we had to go back. When we went back, we grabbed a quart each of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. I was thrilled to learn they offer insulated bags for slightly longer trips because we were staying about 30 minutes away. When we got to our home away from home, the quarts were all still solid. We enjoyed those over the next 2 days...so creamy and delicious! It should be noted they are cash only which I know I've seen in other reviews and questions but that can't be shared enough! I would hate for somebody to get there and not have cash...what a disappointment that would be!

What a great spot for some good old fashioned frozen custard!!! We’ve lived here for two years now and this easily became our favorite spot for some ice cream! Last night after our anniversary dinner over at Fahrenheit 132 we decided to stop by Carl’s. Completely made my anniversary date complete. Bring cash with you when you go as they only accept cash! You won’t be disappointed!!!

The root beer slush float was delicious. The staff were very helpful and the service was great.

Good custard and milkshakes at a reasonable price. Their pineapple flavor is usually my go to when visiting. But please note they’re cash only.

By far the best frozen custard I have had! Really creamy and sweet custard. Better than Freddy's. Will come back again!

So this gem has been here a long time! The ice cream is old fashioned and simple. It is also very good! This is a great little after dinner place with a lot of history! If you get the opportunity you should go! And eat it very slow and enjoy the history! This is the last one of these places around! Enjoy!

Best soft serve I've ever had in the area! The only better for me is located in Alamogordo, NM, called Calichies Frozen Custard, just the best!

Swung by for the first time after moving to Fred. on a Saturday, was highly recommended and they absolutely delivered on every front! The place had a line wrapping the patio area (great 1st sign) but every minute like clockwork we marched forward. Service was excellent and the custard incredibly delicious! I was not expecting such an easy price ($5 for a mountain on a cone). Definitely a perfect place for a cold treat with a cool classic style.

We give it lots of nostalgia points, the custard is good. The prices are on the high side.

How could you not absolutely love Carl's? I cannot come up with a way. Don't want to as well for Carl's is the perfect place. It has tons and tons of positive memories and feelings. It also brings you to another time and place where good feelings prevail. My favorite treat is the plain cone chocolate. It is nearly impossible to not love it. Yet, a chocolate malt is really good as well. Do yourself a favor and go ahead enjoy yourself - you'll thank yourself!

Absolutely loved coming back to my hometown to show my son where I grew up and to let him have some of this world famous frozen custard

Now that I've been here I understand why they're so busy. Delicious!! They don't have a lot of fancy options like some places do but what they do have is very good. A little pricier than some places but worth it. I had a Large cone which is their medium at the cost of 5.25. I will definitely be going back again

There is always a line at Carl's regardless of when you drive by. We decided to make the trip and circle the block for parking. This is an ice cream stand with no inside seating. There were a lot of families enjoying their ice cream cones, sundaes and milk shakes before the heat melted them. Even though there was a line, it moved pretty quickly. My soft serve cone was good! I really like that they stay open late. It makes it so easy to stop by to have a delicious treat when you are craving something special after dinner.

Carl's is a Fredericksburg staple. I enjoyed it as a student at Mary Washington College 30 years ago, and it was wonderful bringing my family there this summer. The flavor & consistency are fantastic! I was only disappointed by the size of the shakes: barely bigger than a hand.

When I Moved to Virginia many years ago my new neighbor ask my sisters and I If we wanted to go get frozen custard Well back then we didn't know any better and said no because it didn't sound very appealing. We have since realized what a mistake that was !! The only bad thing is trying to decide whether I want a sugar cone or a shake, oh wait I may get the hot fudge sundae lol

Honest review.. the ice cream is excellent and the best as far as ice cream can be but the price for it is dam near ridiculous. I bought 2 cups and 2 shakes and it came out to 28 bucks not to mention the portion size is so small for that amount of money

Frozen custard, shakes and sundaes, dishes and cones. That is what is on the menu at this landmark 1947, ice cream stand, that has of fans far and near. Lines and limited parking during peak operating.

Wonderful frozen custard shop. Cones, cups, sundaes and shakes - what more do you need? Really nice "old-fashioned" custard stand. Make sure you bring cash as they don't accept credit. Super friendly staff!

Fun and neat old place. Has retained it's vintage feel down to the old ice cream machines visible from the order window. This is an old school walk up type place with a limited menu but what they offer is good. Very limited outdoor seating on concrete benches. Can get a little busy but orders are received quickly so there is no extended wait times. Nice place to take a few minutes and have an ice cream, float, sundae or shake. Worth a visit.
