This year's Open Monument Day included a visit to the world's first cavern power plant in the Drei-Brüder-Shaft. It was in operation from December 24th to July 10th, 1972. The support association (Drei-Brüder-Schacht e.V.) organized tours, gave answers to questions from visitors and ensured their physical well-being. Thanks to the active club. Since 2019, the Der-Brüder-Schacht has been included as part of the Erzgebirge/Krusnohorí mining region and bears the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site. A display board provides information in three languages.

An extraordinary technical monument. Historical control room (marble) and winding machine, interesting exhibition on dewatering. Please register your visit and tour in advance.

There is a historic cavern power plant in the Dreibrüderschacht. This was in operation from 1913 to 1945 and 1953 to 1970. The impact water from the many water solution tunnels dug by miners was used to generate electricity underground. Actually not an entirely uninteresting form of environmentally friendly energy production.

The last use of the Three Brothers Shaft was as a hydroelectric power station at a depth of several hundred meters. The reservoir was above ground. The water was channeled through underground mine tunnels. With the large difference in height between the reservoir above ground and the power plant underground and the water flowing through the tunnels at high speed, the turbines were used to generate electrical energy. After the invention of alternating voltage, a high-voltage line transmitted electricity to Freiberg. The operation of the turbines and control of the shaft system took place in the above-ground control center. Many individual measuring devices and switches were necessary, where today there are screens in a control room that show an entire system of this type at a glance. Unfortunately, you cannot visit such a cavern power plant, like a hydroelectric power plant beneath the dam wall of a reservoir. You can clearly see the reservoir. But the power plant is located in a dark cavity deep underground. However, it is very possible to understand how the power plant worked until fifty years ago with a tour through the Three Brothers Shaft Association.

We were able to discover an interesting museum here on the day of the open monument. The shaft is the first cavern power plant in the world to use hydroelectric power from underground drainage tunnels to generate electricity. What a clever idea. Very well explained during a guided tour. Get to see some machines in action. Class!

Clean energy is not a “modern invention”. The district electricity plant on the Dreibrüderschacht is an impressive facility for the re-use of mining in the Freiberg district. Although it is unfortunately no longer in operation today, it is still worth taking a look at the exhibition, the original control room and the historic winding machine. There are sufficient parking spaces at the foot of the area, and the hiking and cycling path passes in the immediate vicinity.

A very interesting museum facility for all mining enthusiasts...an underground energy power plant that is over 100 years old and is still functional. Cannot be reached by public transport and if so, then take a slightly further hiking trail ✌️
