I have been on two official tours here and I would still pay to do them again. This is definitely a gem here in Fresno and I can't believe it took me til my 30s to go! The history behind this place is so inspiring! They have done a great job preserving the underground space and trees. The staff is so incredibly kind and knowledgeable, each time I have gone I have gotten something new from it. The first time I went was during quarantine so certain parts were off limits, I went again about a week ago and got to see the full tour. They have a cute little gift shop area to get some souvenirs and even the cutest hand made jewelry! You can also buy the citrus from that is produced from these historic trees during the season. :) I will continue to bring friends who visit me from out of town, it's definitely a must see! Each season brings new views as well, in the spring the roses and citrus are in bloom. In the Autumn it's a different energy, yet just as beautiful.

Beautiful underground garden and living quarters all of it the result of one single inspired man. I recommend the visit, the place is beautiful and the guide did a very good job. We had a great time!

Absolutely stunning place. Yes it’s pricey but so beautiful and amazing that ONE man dug it all with hand tools. I felt so inspired!! I wish I had come here to visit sooner. Lots of information from the tour guide and it was just wonderful.

Absolutely amazing place to visit! 100% recommend going even if it’s hot outside! We went for a 9:30 am tour, and even when it got to over 100 degrees outside it was still relatively cool down in the gardens, especially once we got down to the lower level. The architecture is incredible, and hearing the history of one man doing it all was so fascinating. Our tour guide was so sweet and incredibly knowledgeable. She was very sweet to my boyfriends sister who is claustrophobic, making sure to warn us before we went through a small space, assuring us we’d be in an open area soon, and offering to have someone guide us back to the gift shop to get some air and water if it got to be too much. Luckily it wasn’t too much and we were able to enjoy the whole tour! We went with our 8 month old baby in a carrier and she had just as much fun as we did looking around at everything. The place is absolutely beautiful and I look forward to coming back with my parents the next time they visit us in Fresno!

How do you even review a place like this? This place is completely unique, like nothing I've ever seen or experienced before. The physical place plus the incredibly inspiring story behind it, the way it just keeps going and going, it's an incredible man-made miracle. Our tour guide was excellent, too - I forget his name but he's in my photos here and he was SO nice, such a great speaker, very knowledgeable, and really made the experience extra special for us. I can't stop raving about this place, it's probably the best and most interesting thing in the city of Fresno. Heck, it's a highlight for the whole state of California. Amazing, breathtaking place.

Never in my wildest dreams would I expect a part of such interesting history to find in - Fresno. The story of one man’s dream and never giving up told through underground mazes and citrus trees. The words and pictures won’t do this place justice. If you’re nearby make sure to spend a few hours learning about this amazing place and how it came to be. The guides are very knowledgeable. Highly recommend it!

Absolutely amazing. What an incredible hidden gem! Fantastic, super friendly staff. Wheelchair/walker accessible as long as it meets the width requirement posted on their website. They also have events at the ballroom area that sounds like a really cool experience; would love to be able to go to one sometime. Don't miss this unique experience!

I encourage everyone to visit this place. It’s very fascinating. The architecture, smart and creative ideas and the design, each and everything about the vision and execution is fantastic. Should be a school trip or fun family outing. It’s inspiring, educational and cool. Our tour guide was the best! She answered my son’s questions and encouraged his curiosity.

We went here as walk-ins without a reservation and got on a tour starting within 6 mins. Our tour guide was Sarah and she was so perfect and made the experience so interesting. The only critique is I wish she’d remind people as we went along the tour to not touch the walls because people started getting lazy, leaning and putting their shoes on the walls as we were standing around. They should also know how to say those phrases in Spanish since over half of our group spoke Spanish. It was quite a unique experience and we got lots of pictures.

Tour guide was super friendly and nice. Also knowledgeable about the place. I want to taste the fruit on those trees ☹️☹️☹️. I think tour people will buy some fruit from the tree to taste if they sell it. Sadly, they don't. It would also be nice to have a night tour when it's dark 👻. Over all, worth it.

Absolutely amazing place; excellent tour guides who are very knowledgeable. You cannot self-guide, so make sure to get a reservation ahead of time if it’s the busy season or weekends. We went on a Thursday and we’re able to get on a tour group happening soon after we arrived, but don’t chance it otherwise. What an amazing story, so many years of hard work, botanical wonder and a historical gem.

Wonderful place to visit! Definitely a hidden gem... I recommend making a reservation, though... My husband and I went on a whim, so without a reservation, but luckily we were able to get in with another group. It's way bigger than I thought it'd be. Beautiful and so interesting to learn about the man that built it. Not wheelchair accessible.

Wow this really is a great place, we went here when the weather was super hot and it was great to get out of the heat, underground it's at least 15c cooler. Theres loads af amazing history down there and great old fruit trees with fruit growing on them! You have to take a tour, it was $24 each but we'll worth it. About an hour tour underground. You get to see all the plant and the crazy network that the guy built with his hands

One of the best experiences I've ever had! Was meaning to visit long time ago but for one thing or another it didn't happened. This time I actually visited with my military son and my teenager daughter. We all enjoyed this experience and will totally recommend to everyone to visit when in Fresno ♡

Came here with zero knowledge or expectations and was blown away. Chris did an excellent job of leading us through the tour presenting us with the story of Baldassare Forestiere and answering the questions the group had for him. Definitely recommend stopping by!

Katie was an awesome guide. It is so incredible to see what one man can do. The whole family really enjoyed themselves which is rare with teens but it's impossible not to be amazed and inspired. Purchase your tickets in advance online and there are plenty of different start times. Even in a warm 90⁰ day it was pleasant.

This place is an amazing gem and piece of history. The tour guide was incredible and she was so patient with our kids in a pretty big group. The amazing underground gardens are something to behold. The tree grafting is unbelievable. This is a great story of an Italian immigrant working extremely hard to make their dream come true.

Well it's a little funky but very interesting, very 😎. Which was why Balassare Forestiere went underground in the first place was to escape the heat, He built a full residence underground with mostly locally sourced materials, and mostly by his own hand. Planted trees and vines to supplement in income but created a wonderment to humankind, It's a great story of an immigrant who carved out his own path 👍 Yes to getting reservations, I don't know just how busy they get but the tour groups are necessarily small because of space limitations in the passageway.

What a wonderful story, and a brilliant m mind. Getting to walk the tunnels and the Vision of another person was breathtaking. The grounds are well maintained. The tour guide was knowledgeable. Nice knowing that the family is still involved. Parking is abundant on the street. Buy tickets online. Check in process is easy and quick. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this local gem. No filming on the premises. Pics are ok

Very unique setting and so much effort and creativity to set up the numerous rooms, meaning behind the designs, and much more. A must see if you are in the area. Tour doesn't allow video or voice recordings, added a few non-tour videos.

Though unassuming from the outside, I’m very grateful that by chance we happened to stumble across this place. The staff were all incredibly friendly, and our tourguide Lateishka (sorry if i misspelled your name!!) was absolutely fabulous & welcoming to everyone visiting. The gardens / tunnel construction were awe inspiring to behold. This was such a lovely historical attraction to have come across and I highly recommend it to visitors!!

Very educational. Inspiring to hear and see how one man's lifelong dream became such a beautiful marvel. All those years digging! What discipline! Against the grain. Under the radar. Beneath the surface. He even used scrap metal. One man's trash, is another man's....... A precious diamond carved from unexpected rock. Won't soon forget this place or experience. Side note. I was really hoping to eat some loquats. But alas I visited it out of season!

I highly recommend this amazing underground home and garden that shows what the perseverance and hard work of one family can accomplish, most of it 40 years of work by one man. See most fruit trees grown in the area up close. Informative guided tours.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour! The tour guide was friendly, kind and knowledgeable. I had a reservation and arrived early so I was allowed to enjoy the rose path and benches outside. There was plenty of shade. The greeter remembered my name and used it as she was making sure I was comfortable and enjoying myself. The story of this place and the man responsible for creating this space is fascinating and inspirational. Well worth the money and time well spent. I would do it again and bring a friend! There seemed to be plenty of parking around the property. Street parking nearest the entrance.

The Forestiere Underground Gardens is a fascinating and unique attraction in Fresno, California. It is a series of subterranean gardens and rooms that were built by Baldassare Forestiere, an Italian immigrant, over a period of 40 years from 1906 to his death in 1946. The gardens are located in a residential neighborhood, and the entrance is very unassuming. But once you step inside, you are transported to another world. The gardens are cool and refreshing, even on hot summer days. The walls are lined with plants, and there are even fountains and pools. Forestiere built the gardens as a place to escape the heat and to create a personal oasis. He was a very talented craftsman, and he used a variety of techniques to create the gardens, including hand-digging, bricklaying, and concrete casting. The gardens are a testament to Forestiere's vision and determination. They are a fascinating example of folk art, and they offer a glimpse into the life of a man who was ahead of his time. The tour of the gardens is led by a knowledgeable guide who will tell you about Forestiere's life and the history of the gardens. The tour lasts for about an hour, and it is a great way to learn about this unique and special place. I highly recommend visiting the Forestiere Underground Gardens if you are ever in Fresno. It is a truly unforgettable experience. Follow me on IG @travel_and_eats_usa

We loved it! My tia got me tickets as a graduation gift and it was such a cool experience. We went the first week of July and it was the first weekend to be triple digits (recommendation: schedule it when it’s not too hot outside) The tour was about an hour long and our guide, Chris, was well informed of the property and spoke beautifully. We are going to come back in the spring time to enjoy cooler weather and to see the flowers in full bloom.

On a really hot day in Fresno it's good to go underground because it's about 10 degrees cooler. The gardens are great but the architecture that this Italian created almost single handed is absolutely fantastic. The labyrinth that he designed was more impressive to me than the gardens themselves and the way that he was able to integrate them.

Noticing and driving by the historic landmark signage for years now, I was finally able to enjoy a tour. The intensive work this man put into his creation is amazing. His imagination and skill, both with digging and the fruits truly make a unique place to visit.

Would definitely recommend this unusual place. The tourguide was full of information and very excited to be doing the tour. Its an amazing story of a Sicilian immigrating to Fresno and building his dream. Which was kept alive by his family after his death. You can visit by guided tour only.

After living in Fresno County my whole life, I finally visited this historic landmark in May 2022. Well worth it! The natural beauty of this place is striking, the quirkiness, and the very interesting story and history of dirt turned to a dwelling to a well-beloved Fresno treasure. Our tour guide was amazing! You can tell she loves her job! I would definitely bring anyone visiting Fresno here. Online/phone reservations are required. The online ticket process is very easy.

I lived not too far away from Fresno. Moved away many years ago. I have tried to go there in the past but did not have tickets in advance. We actually tried to do them online and thought something was wrong. They told us it was booked for the day and I said oh my gosh I'm from Washington State and this has happened to me several times. The lovely lady spoke to somebody and came back and said can you come at 2:30 and said yes but instead we waited there and it was lovely just sitting there waiting for our turn. And it was worth it I was amazed by the whole underground living. Growing of the citric trees. How he did all this with the tools he had and he just left a legacy there for Fresno California. If you get a chance to go it's out of this world that's all I'll say. And it's nice and fresh down there.

Great hidden treasure (literally hidden underground) with an amazing story/history. I highly recommend this spot for a quick break while on a road trip or to learn more about the area if you're a local or history buff.

My sisters and I toured in mid September. The weather was perfect because it was still warm out and we were able to notice the difference in temperature and still be comfortable. Shoutout to Lisa, a wonderful and patient tour guide. The plat life is amazing. As a California native, there is still a lot to learn agriculturally. A must for anyone who loves history, especially stories about people who persevere and have a vision. I hope to visit again for their events and if there is ever a time they sell the fruit being grown on the trees - I believe there is a season for it.
