Small space with various exhibits throughout the year. Well located next to Tokyo Midtown. Came here for the recent event: 2121 Futures In-Sight. Installations are separated by categories: fashion, technology, food, politics, art, etc. and their predictions for the year 2121 from experts in these fields. There were lots of text and some of them had English translations. Would recommend for those interested in the future and how technology has and will change over the years.

I went mainly for the architecture of the building, which was great. The exhibition themselves are nice, and very interesting if you are a designer, but can get repetitive at some point. It is 1400 yen for admission, so think about it twice.

A beautiful exhibition space hosting design-related exhibitions. I went to see “The Originals” exhibition and loved it. It showcased many different contemporary design masterpieces and did a good job at explaining and exploring the exhibition thesis. A must-see for design enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The park the museum is set in is also very beautiful.

One of my favourite venues around Roppongi and in Tokyo in general. First of all the entire place was designed by Tadao Ando, so that alone gives you a reason to go and see it. Then there are the exhibitions which I also find amazingly curated and presented. I highly recommend checking out the most recent exhibition which is up until December 2022.

I think your experience will vary greatly depending on what is being exhibited at the time. The exhibition that we went to unfortunately did not interest me so I felt that it wasn’t worth the ¥1100 admission fee. However, the architecture itself and also the free entry exhibition area were very nice. If you are not interested in the current exhibition, just simply skip that part for best result.

This is a really unique museum! I went while they were displaying about the Arc de Triomphe being wrapped. But they change their collections often, so it maybe be different now. It is very well set up with some interactive portion and videos too. Also, while I was there a guide gave us a brief overview of the history and goal of the design center which was super interesting too. I definitely recommend it if you like design~

The building and gardens alone justify a visit: high art in architecture IMHO. The current exhibition (Nov23) is in two parts. Galleries 1 & 2 feature the theme of design materials. Gallery 3 is a separate exhibit of the work of the glass artist (whose name I forget) who designed the Tokyo Olympics torch. I enjoyed them both.

(Translated by Google) Master Tadao Ando’s art museum architectural work, the design concept is to pay tribute to the Japanese national treasure-level costume designer Issey Miyake, using Miyake’s unique concept of using traditional Japanese origami design to make clothing with a piece of cloth, and folding a piece of paper into the entire building. , To complete this case, and at the same time, in order not to affect the park view, the volume of the building is buried as much as possible in the ground. It is a very splendid sketch of public architecture work, it is worth coming to experience~~ (Original)

Small museum with rotating exhibits. Very unique design to the museum itself--underground. The museum, sitting in the middle of a small park in Tokyo, looks like a tiny 1-floor building with an interesting roof structure, but it actually extends underground a fair distance. Only one other floor below, but wider below than above. On our visit, provided a fascinating multi-media overview of the life of a modern art pair, and examples of some of their work. 21_21 doesn't take long to visit, but was worth the time and money. Recommended.

I was sold on this when it started with a quote by Carl Sagan (appropriately framing the entire exhibition in the cosmic context of spacetime) 🌌🖤🙈 As our global, collaborative effort towards the climate emergency gets severely sidelined (sadly due to us being stuck on all things regional identity-based), “The Futures In-Sight” exhibition IMHO is a hugely thought-provoking, and era-appropriate exhibition for all who feel the urge to connect and focus on what we can do together as global people 🌎 If you can read Japanese you may get a little more from it, as some of my favourite parts of the exhibition were quotes from thinkers / artists / scientists etc. active in different fields on how they think of, and from our future in the year 2121 in connection with the now (as well as the past). But they also have a QR code for each quote and installation which loads the descriptions right into your browser. So a workflow for getting them translated e.g. via Google Translate, I imagine would be relatively seamless ↔️ If you’re a philosophy-oriented person (in absolutely any disciple or background) I think you’ll really appreciate the exhibition! And lastly, what I always fail to describe with words, I hope these gazillion photos would help fill some of the void ✏️📸

A beautiful building set amongst a meandering park setting. The gallery spaces themselves are quite small but well curated with good descriptions in both Japanese and English. The primary gallery downstairs is much smaller than expected, so the entry fee is a bit expensive but worth the visit for the architectural pilgrimage alone

(Translated by Google) I like the events here because they are unique every time. There are new discoveries. The building and exhibition are not very big, but you can get a lot of satisfaction. On the contrary, it is also recommended to drop in casually because it is not so big. Also, the illuminations outside were very beautiful! There are many foreigners, and I felt the atmosphere of watching the illuminations together, regardless of adults or children, was very warm.

Sightly design! Tadao Ando and his concrete underground lair. It's neat and resembles the mines of Moria in here minus, the balrogs. There was a text iconography-type exhibit, which wasn't super cheap (¥1500) so I'd recommend tracking down some discount tickets in Shinjuku or Ueno before you go. I feel like this would be a good venue during the summer to escape the heat. The display space to the left as you enter was free! Glorious. There was a bunch of stuff by an American guy there. I was lured by the name "Monet" on the outside. It was ok. Don't miss the other cool spaces around Midtown! So many! Also a nearby ice skating rink, but there's no way I'm risking my life on that thing.

Heavenly spaces, smart exhibitions, layout and atmosphere is perfect. Issey Miaki, may he rest in peace, gave the architectural gift to humanity, a Tado design, precision construction in a heavenly garden. Experience it. The staf wear the Miaki designed clothing, an extra for the visitor's delight.

One of my favorite museums in Tokyo in terms of architecture (by Tadao Ando). The museum has two buildings: one main building and a second smaller one that usually hosts free exhibitions which is nice to check out after an afternoon of lounging on the grass area at Roppongi Midtown.

  • 5/5 Salman M. 5 years ago on Google
The museum is a collaboration between an architect and a fashion designer. Tadao Ando expertise strikes you so beautifully that you completely get dissolved in whole ambience of this building. A small angular structure welcomes you into the museum and then main exhibition halls are located in basement. A wonderfully placed courtyard brings ample light into the basement and keeps the basement alive. The exhibition at display was worth the visit ss well.

A tiny but elegant place designed by Ando. Its sharp shape makes it so eyes-catching, but grey tone concrete surface looks so calm in the place, blending as a balance feel in one’s sight, wordless!

Fantastic gallery. When you was here the audio architecture exhibition was on show and it blew my mind. Fantastically well put together and not too busy also. The building itself is worth a visit too, especially after seeing other architecture by Tadao Ando before in Naoshima. There was also a second smaller exhibition and the shop had some tasteful merchandise too. Great place and a must visit if you’re in Tokyo.

It’s a nice exhibition that reveals how Parisian wrapped Arc de Triomphe for creating energy for the city. However, there was not many things that could be look, a bit pity. The museum (architecture) is excellent for sure, I definitely love it and quite recommend to someone who fancy at design of architecture.

A very unique architecture showcases some well curated exhibition - Wrapped Project by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

  • 3/5 Moven M. 1 year ago on Google
I really enjoyed the building itself; however, the actual exhibit - the wrapping of arc de triomphe was terrible. It’s merely a very rough collection of videos telling you how they did it and it was difficult, but it never even talked about the why or the story behind the reason or thought process to wrap it. It was disappointingly mindless. On top of that, the videos were cut by amateurs that have no experience in storytelling and showed a bunch of bland scenes that could have easily been sped up. IE, we don’t need 2 minutes of people standing around and preparing to do something in a 5 minute video. Definitely do both recommend this show.

The centre was not large but the exhibits were well curated. The current was displayed original furniture designs and the further developments. Interesting to see the origins of commonly seen furniture pieces and lifestyle objects. In addition, the facikity was sited in the middle of a beautiful garden. Can acces through the back of Tokyo Midtown Shopping Centre and cutting through the beautiful little park. Much better walk than walking along the roads as recommended by Google Map. Also I noticed two different pairs of parents brought their little kids. Both kids were crying loudly, to their embarassment. The inside of the centre is built mainly with cement and is somewhat dark. Might look frightening to kids and they won't understand the exhibits.

I have been visiting 21_21 Design Sight since its opening and I'm always in awe of the beautiful exhibitions that take place throughout the building. The design by architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake is breathtaking and brilliant. Today's exhibition featuring The Original is a wonderful way to look at all of the great designs from around the world that are universal and timeless. I must see if you are visiting Tokyo! GH
