Wandered in here (two of us) on a Tuesday, late May 2022..about 6ish as a walk in (did not book). Situated on street with a good vibe not too far off the tourist trails. Had been up and down a few times as on route back to our hotel (Pestana Carlton..see my review on that) and also a nice no nonsense bar (Chico..see my review on that). Good reviews were a draw for this curry house...and in short, they were not wrong. This is a reasonably priced place with good service and a cracking curry. We were first in for the evening and chose to sit outside (the inside is small...nothing fancy..but would have gone in had the weather been inclement). It didn't take long for the tables to fill around us...assisted by the taste bud busting aromas emanating from within. We went for pompadoms with chutneys, onion bhagis, lenti dahl keema nan, rice, and chicken vindaloo with a lamb shashlik. Added a bottle of white wine (served in ice bucket) and a cold litre bottle of sparkling water. All came to a tad over 40 euros. Generous portions...so much so that the inevitable doggy bag was requested and duly delivered. What I liked about this was that they provided us with the foil trays and bag to decant ourselves rather than take our meals away and arbitrarily just 'slop' them into containers (resulting in a later still tasty..but visually unappetising 'gloop'). Spent around an hour and a half in the gaff. What was amusing was that they asked us to momentarily move as our table was directly beside the double doors to the gas bottles that fuelled the cookers. Not wanting to risk a riot by cutting off the curries..we duly obliged while they switched a bottle. All took under a minute...and we were reseated to continue feasting. In summary...easily as good if not better than some of our best curry houses in the UK with bonus of being somewhat cheaper. Cheers India Gate and well done. Will definitely be back when next in Funchal to see how you are faring and hopefully again get some great curry. 👍😁

We came in for an early dinner (6pm) and were seated immediately! The food here is really quite lovely - we tried the palak paneer, dal tadka, channa masala, garlic naan, tandoori roti and basmati rice. The flavour was delicious - the dal tadka and channa masala especially. The papak paneer and dal tadka were a bit salty, so I’d recommended letting them know if you have a strict salt preference. The garlic naan was better than the tandoori roti (which was a bit too crisp making it hard to eat with your hands). The service is attentive and helpful - the food also arrives quite quickly!

Food is great, they have a lot of options that might confuse you. But just ask the waiter for help and he will guide you in the right direction. When you order your food order rice with it its not included in the dish because of different rice choices. If you are with 2 big eaters order 2 rice plates if you are a small eater just one should be enough. Add a garlic naan for taste and you will have a great eat here. They will serve you a mild version of the dish and ask if it’s spicy enough, if not you can say that you want it spicier and they add a bit more spice. They do this because it’s easier to add spice then remove it. And this prevents that the food is not tasty because of the spice level, and gives everyone what they want. For sure a great eat and a place to return to.

Beautiful food and excellent service. The menu is broad so there is something for everyone. I tried the butter chicken with a variety of naans and it was amazing, great value for money very filling.

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Funchal. This is our second summer here and we keep coming back whenever we want a great meal. The Butter Chicken or Chicken Korma is our favorite. The garlic Nan is excellent and of course get the Piluw rice.

This was by far some of the best Indian food we have had. The service is very good. We had the garlic naan, Chicken Tikka on the sizzling plate which was served with a delicious curry, and the Chicken Madras served with Basmati. The quality of the food was so fresh and delicious. My partner is Sri Lankan, so we like it spicy! They did not disappoint. I highly recommend!

Went to India Gate during a visit to Funchal and oh god the food was insanely delicious! We went for the chicken tikka masala and the prawn curry with pilau rice, jeera rice, garlic nan and the chapati. The flavours complement each other so well. Truly a party in your mouth. The personnel were also friendly and down to earth people. Really recommend this place to anyone who loves Indian food or is trying it out for the first time. You won't be disappointed!!!

So delicious and perfect for vegans that are struggling to find good vegan food on the island. I had vegetable soup and Aloo Gobi, super tasty, medium spicy. Staff is also very friendly.

We found this restaurant thanks to its good reviews on Google!! It was very very good. I don't really like risking eating Indian food when I am away on holiday but this was fine. We had the chicken and a lamb shashlik, both dishes were great, not your usual meat that you can find in some Indian restaurants. You won't be disappointed. I could eat it again..

Best Indian food that we had on the island. Pretty authentic. Interior, especially restrooms, need a makeover.

Some of the best food I have tasted in my whole life. The food was absolutely incredible and a must try for anyone who is in the mood for Indian food. This is the best Indian food that I have ever had and that says a lot given that I am South African. It's located in an alleyway and the inside of the restaurant is somewhat lackluster but overall a pleasant experience.

We visited India Gate at around 10:30 which is kinda late, but we had only just landed in Madeira and we were so glad this place was still open after a long travel day! We opted for a chicken patia and a prawn patia to start and they were lip smacking good! Proper butterflied king prawns and a rich spicy curry sauce. We then shared the butter chicken with pilau rice and my only comment is that I should have asked for a it a little bit spicier, but that’s my fault. Again rich and buttery and served in a single portion pot with an individual T light to keep it bubbling. First night of our holiday and I’m already planing to end the trip by re revisiting and going all out! Food mentioned with two large beers came in at 30 euros.

I’m a fan of indian food and this restaurant was one pf the best. I had the chicken madras which is very spicy, not for the weak of heart. I’ve also tasted butter chicken, the flavour was amazing.

No Cobra! OK, Super Bock works well. 3rd Indian meal this visit. We know this street as " Retaurant Street"...although higher concentration in the narrow old town district. Lots of choice. Came via the Prince Charles (not on Google and should be renamed!.) Massala pops a bit too well done but tasty. Main menu a little predictable but still very flavousome. One chicken Lilypuri and a lamb achari. Service was good..at home we usually spread food out over more time. Prefer slower service...as long as beer flows freely. Garlic naan needs free Polo mints! Achari very pickled..which I like. Tima not so much. Food and 5 beers...44€

Good food and the flavors are delicious. However, the service is lacking. It will a five star for me if the waiter was more friendly, more smiles and less taking orders like a robot.

I've been to many different Indian restaurants around the world and this one in Madeira is clearly one of the best. The taste is immense! And the service is excellent.

Such a nice staff. Warm and friendly. Mr. Kailash spoke English and German. The food was delicious. The interior could been little more fancy but the most important is the food! We came back some days later with a friend from Britain and he said that this food was the most delicious he had for years! And mark that England is famous for its good Indian restaurants! I had a Bhuna dish and we shared a Naan bread! Lovely once again!!
