I've been waiting to see this place since 2015 but it was close. Finally I saw it and it was amazing. As Portrait photographer this place amused me and every portrait was an inspiration. My family is from Portugal but migrated to Venezuela. And seeing the history in this museum made me a bit nostalgic. What a great place to know about photo and story of Madeira. Super recommend and people is great. Take your time to read and to watch the video. I already recommended to my whole family when traveling there.

Superb museum dedicated to photography. The place is a completely renovated former photo studio. The different rooms allow you to travel back in time with period reconstructions. Vicente is a famous Madeiran photographer. Its photographic background is immense and bears witness to life on the island over the years. The building is magnificent, completely redone, beautiful rooms (photographic chambers, painted backgrounds, chemistry tools and utensils). Photo enthusiasts will have a very pleasant time there and others will be able to discover beautiful things. Do not miss

A place out of this time. When pictures were a luxury for the few. Precious moments when time stopped for the length of a single photography. The museum is both interesting for the memories of Madeira past and the history of photography, maybe some still remember from childhood or family album's. Staff is very friendly and the entry will not break the bank.

Very beautiful workshop and photo studio reconstructions. Don't miss the photo exhibitions retracing the history of Madeira over a hundred years. The people at reception are very pleasant. The small bookstore offers a nice selection of photo-themed books.

Very interesting museum, lots of things to see. Especially landscape photography (I mean, the whole Madeira is a gem for the genre). It's not just about photography but the history too, and what can give you a better idea of history than a photograph! Btw the entrance is only 3€

A very interesting dive into the past of photography and the famous Vicente family of photographers. They were the official photographers of Sisi when in Madeira and then of the Portuguese royal family. You can see landscapes and portraits of old Madeira and the studio which was famous for all the different backdrops. These were ordered in London and were a big part of the appeal of the studio for the family or own portraits.

This is the very best museum in Madeira. We are so glad we stumbled upon it, had a great time there and learnt a lot. Superbly curated! Very well informed and super friendly staff. The young gentleman at the entrance was particularly helpful and gave us a great overview. The images are still with us. We'll definitely visit again next time in Madeira.

Very nice museum showing mood of the time. To get the most of it - read the stories behind the pictures, that will give’s you the context. There is an elevator to the exposition so no problem with accessibility. There is nice coffee shop right behind the corner of museum.

Very classical photography museum. Little too overstaffed but focused on old skool local photography. Building is just as beautiful. And with an entrance fee of only 3,- a must visit.

Fantastic museum that shows old photo art and gives you an insight into the island. Also shows quite a few hard working people for lousy pay. Definitely worth a visit and entrance fee is €3

We were reading about this museum and realised it was only a short distance from where we were staying. It's very easy to miss just walking by. Even if you have little or no interest in photography, it's well worth a visit for the historic photos. You'll be surprised at how much there is to see there. Everything is really well presented and only 3 Euros to get in. Staff are also very friendly and helpful.

We spent a couple of hours here. It was v interesting to learn about the history of photography in Funchal and to see the progression of the different photographic processes and equipment. Staff were v friendly and chatty. There are many old cameras on display and the original props that were used for camera shoots from the early 19th century.

A unique photography museum based on a photo studio that existed for more than 100 years. Everything is preserved including the interior, fixtures and photographs. A wonderful cross-section of the history of the island and its inhabitants and guests

This is a very interesting place to visit. The building and old atlerie is in a remarkable condition. There are lots of beautiful old black and white photographs showing old Maderia.

A very informative museum about the early development of photography . In the processing rooms there are still faint smells of the chemicals that I remembered from my days in darkrooms back in the 1980’s. All the information is written in both Portuguese and English and the photographs give a good insight into Madeira at that time. My only criticism would be the ridiculous amount of staff that made me feel ‘watched’. The price of entry is so low (3 euros) that everyone should visit this unique building.

Classical museum. If you look for spectacular pictures of Madeira you are in te wrong place. Also, the entire atmosphere was very awkward. All staff seemed to be having a bad time. Lastly, there was way too many staff. We felt under surveillance te whole time.

A wonderfully presented museum in a stylish house. The exhibition was very informative and the overall furnishings were solid. The highlight was the small cafe in the adjacent courtyard, where there was an inexpensive espresso at the end. Absolute recommendation for Funchal visitors!
