Take the cable car in order to reach the botanical garden for an amazing experience, because the views are spectacular! The entry ticket for the botanical garden is sold together with the cable car ticket if you wish to go this way. The garden is beautiful and has a great diversity of plants, totally worth the stop! Big thumbs up for the cleanliness of the toilets!

The gardens are lovely, not quite as much drama as Monte but they are beautiful and much more educational. It looks like they are slowly redesigning areas and those look especially good. I saw some comments about weeding, and in some beds yer there were a few weeds but it was still much better than my garden! Entry was much cheaper than Monte and the variety of plants was really impressive, definitely worth a visit!

Lovely garden, in need of a little better upkeep in places, possibly a hangover from the pandemic. The cacti are spectacular, however, and it's worth a visit for these alone. Great city views and a couple of good cafes for a spot of lunch. There's a minimum spend for card so have some cash handy if you just want a drink.

Worth a visit, especially if you are into plants and flowers. Was surprised by the variety of plants. There is a pond with turtles on the lower level of the Botanical garden, as well as toilets near the pond. Took us around 2 hours without transfers with funiculars. Do not forget to visit a Tropical garden nearby. In my opinion much more lovely! Plan around 2-3 hours for Tropical garden as well. You can buy tickets to Botanical garden together with tickets for funiculars and save some money.

Beautiful way to spend a day in Madeira. There’s so many flowers blooming, different areas dedicated to different species. If you love flowers you won’t be disappointed here. Even if you’ve been there before you will see something new on your next trip as we did. Not all flowers bloom at the same time of year so there will be something new every time you go. They also have a great cafe for food and drinks with an amazing view. No complaints here. Just all out natural beauty.

It took us a while to visit but it was worthwhile. Beautiful, classic botanical garden layout with many areas of focus. Two sets of parking ( one small directly opposite and a larger one slightly downhill). Specimens from around the world which befits Madeira’s location as a provisioning post for explorers. Succulents, tree ferns, bulbs, etc. Roses past their best now. There is a little ( natural history) museum which is a little dated but with some interesting coral and displays on Madeira and Porto Santo Geology. Unfortunately there is no access to the herb garden which appears to be indoors. Will return again in the winter season to see the gardens again.

Wonderful and well maintained botanical garden, we had a great time, basically it was giving a really diverse experience. Definitely worth visiting! On the contrary, at the coffee bar, the food is not really tasty despite of the high prices - so I recommend to avoid it, and maybe grab something more delicious outside the botanical garden.

Garden is pretty enough to kill some time in Funchal and offer a decent view of the city below. We accessed via cable car. Visited in January so potentially not as many flowers this time of year. Mostly enjoyed the gardens but you'd be fine to skip it too and just do cable cars.

You can reach the gardens by bus which stops outside or by car where there are car parking spaces outside. The gardens open at 9am and cost approximately €8 per person. You will need 2 hours to visit. There are lots of ups and downs. There is a cafe on site. It is reasonably priced. The service was slow and could be more welcoming. There are toilets in different parts of the gardens. We were hoping to take the cable car to Monte Gardens, but it was not running the day we went.

We visited Botanical Garden at the end of April, and we spent about 2.5-3 hours there. The upper part is bigger, but it offers fewer extraordinary plants than the bottom part. There is also a small museum with stuffed animals, stones with plant prints and corals but you won't spend there more than 15 minutes until you are a huge fan of stuff like that. We chose this place instead of Monte Palace. It seemed for us more natural and closer to the character of the island.

Brilliant Gardens with loads of great view over the city. It has quite a few different rooms and environments and apparently has the largest collection of tropical plants in Europe. I particularly liked the cactus/succulent garden and the palm lawn (which has a large pool full of ninja turtles). There's a wee cafe and museum, but minimum spend is 15 Euros if you have a card - bring cash! A pretty good botanical garden all in.

The variety of plants here is amazing. Takes about 2 hours to go around and see everything. Not suitable for the disabled and saw some people with prams/pushchairs/strollers struggling in some areas. Good value for money (€7.50 adult entrance). Bus 29 and 31a go past the entrance.

On a hill above Funchal, we travelled up on the cable car. Very scenic. It was busy at the bottom, I would suggest trying to get there early to vent the crowds. The gardens are lovely and it's a quiet location. Great views and there is a cafe overlooking Funchal.

Absolutely worth the €6 pp entry fee. Just beautiful landscaped gardens with so many kinds of flowers and plants I’ve never seen or heard of. Incredible views over Funchal and to the Atlantic as well. Make sure to go on a sunny day as it makes all the difference. We spent about 1.5 hours here.

Fabulous gardens, with excellent range of flowers. Work was being undertaken on the footpaths, flat shoes recommended. Gardens are split into plant sections, all are worth a visit. Local bus from Funchal stops outside the entrance and further bus stop outside the exit. If taking a taxi get the price agreed before getting in and check the price is for the journey not per person.

Great selection of plants and flowers, amazing cacti, you need 1/1.5 h to visit it all, free parking just 3 min down the road. 6€/person. recommended.

One of the top tourist destinations. Bought another day pass on local buses. (€4 having bought the card plus pass yesterday for €5.) The 31 or 31a take you there from seafront. (Buses start from multiple places so check route maps.) Buses are amazing chugging up narrow, winding streets with inches to spare each side.. €6 entry to gardens each Can pay more to catch second cable car to Monte. The seafront cable car does not go here. It goes straight to Monte. Change and come down I guess. Great park if you like plants. Very steep paths. Small cafe. Walked back but calf killer and cars whizz by in game of chicken. Super views. Small rubbish museum with terrible taxidermy and very moth eaten bird specimens.

This place is nice if you’re a plant lover. It’s not the best botanical garden I’ve visited but does have a wonderful and diverse amount of citations and plants. The cactus garden is the most spectacular one to see. There’s a few cafes and the cable cart that goes up to the mountains. Be prepared to have your best walking shoes and to be walking a lot up hill.

A really nice visit is the Botanical Garden. You will see some koi fishes, nice flowers, kind of old tile gallery, a magnificent stone and Chrystal museum and much more. The entrance with 12,5€ is high but price is it abdd so absolutely acceptable.

Lovely... there is work to do however what we saw was gorgeous. It is evident the team put so much love into what they do. Worth the visit.

Perhaps less spectacular than the other one just next door, though with its charm and more educative way so I really enjoyed the visit here

Very much ok but doesn’t compare to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden! Perhaps we went the wrong time a year but not much going on and not as impressive as the pictures! The topiary garden was basically non-existent despite us having seen lovely photos of it! The medicinal section had little plants out and nothing was explained/labelled as to what they’re used for, same for the native to Madeira section! There were some nice bits like the hibiscus everywhere and the cacti/succulent section!

Nice garden, but nothing very special considering price to pay: extra cable car + park ticket! Would vote for Tropical garden next time

A nice place to visit for a casual afternoon stroll. It's quite lovely but it was a little underwhelming. Perhaps I was there at the wrong time of year for flowers. I also found the entrance fee a little high for what it was, £7,50.

A fantastic garden up in the hills of Funchal. There was so much variety and plenty of room to spread out. I particularly enjoyed the cactus plants, the turtles and those views. Quite tricky to get around if your mobility isn't good. We bought a ticket which includes the cable car to Monte. The cafe was delightful with good prices and great views.

Nice garden, but if you’re not a huge fan of flowers or don’t have enough time, it’s not a must-see in Funchal in my opinion. Also, it’s quite hard to get there from Funchal – you’re gonna need a car or a taxi.

  • 4/5 Berglas71 5 months ago on Google
Really nice botanical gardens, filled with a huge variety of flora. The views down the hill into Funchal centre are spectacular. You can either drive up to the gardens, get a taxi, local bus ( bus stop outside the lower entrance) or like us come up the main cable car, exit out to the right at the top then walk down to the botanical cable car and then into the gardens at the top end. ( this was €36 return for the main cable car and €22.80, including botanical garden entry fee, return, for the garden cable car, pay for these at the cable car, prices correct as of Nov. 2023 and based on two people) However, if you are infirm or struggle with hills, you might find the walk from cable car to cable car a bit of an ordeal, definitely not suitable for wheelchair users. The gardens have a cafe and toilets. In the garden are a wide variety of plants, a small museum, souvenir shops and a hot house ( which was shut during our visit). Even though November is considered winter here (24°!) Most of the plants were at the end of their season, so there are not many flowers, spring and summer are the best season for these. Having said that, there was still plenty to see. Be careful of the footpaths, and yes, the gardens are on a hill, so you will be walking downhill/uphill throughout your visit. There is a large pond with fish in it and smaller pools with floating plants on them, so beware, do not stand or let children near these as they look like solid ground but do contain water.

Very nice and diverse botanical garden, go there to see all the cacti trees and flowers and plants from all over the world. You can spend a couple of hours just wandering around the garden. There are plenty of signs so the chance of getting lost there are slim to none

A really enjoyable place to walk around, with some fantastic flowers and plants on display. It is very hilly (as with most things on Madeira!), but worth it. I bought the combi ticket (both cable cars plus Botanical Garden) which I thought was good value for money.

What a beautiful place to hang out. I took a bottle of wine and a book. Amazing views of the harbour and the valley. Well manicured and managed. A lovely marine collection too. A bargain and well worth a visit. Would be awesome if they had a monthly or annual card so that I could afford to visit more often. Thank you for this piece of peace and tranquility 🌴♥️

Found this on our 5th visit to Funchal. Been to Monte Palace Gardens a couple of times but never got round to visiting the Botanical Garden. As beautiful as MPG but in a unique way. Great views of the harbour and many relaxing places to sit and watch the world go by. Will go again 100%.

Amazing flora, amazing views. Not stroller friendly though, if you’re travelling with a baby/toddler, don’t forget to bring a carrier. The bar serves mean banana milkshake!

Very nice botanical gardens. You can find inside so many many special of plants. Beautiful and very knowledgeable. Fee for entry is just 7,50€ and you can also get to viewpoints and look at city from above. Worth to visit. I am not mentioning adrenaline ride up here by bus 😌 perfect experience. Inside the areal are toilets and small buffet.

The garden is really good with a lot of interesting plants. However I miss name plates on some of them. When it comes to the cafe, called pub on the map, I strongly advise you to not visit it. The women working there were extremely impolite and treated us really badly. Everyone can have a bad day, but this was so much more than that. Not service minded what so ever and on top of that the minimum about to pay with a credit card is €15. And when I wanted to add things to my order to get up to €15 (I didn't have enough cash) they rolled their eyes and started to talk about me in Portuguese (which I don't understand). So do yourself a favor and don't visit the cafe! The garden: 4 stars! The cafe: below 0 stars!

Nice large gardens to spend a couple of hours wandering around. They are terraced and steep in places so be aware if you are less mobile. Nice cafe with a splendid view over Funchal to sit in and enjoy the scenery.

5,5€ entry for adults. Garden is very large you can calculate up to 3 hours for seeing every corner. Hundreds of different plants with signs with the name on it. A lot of possibilties to take a pause and relax on a branch. You even have faboulas views over Funchal.

Beautiful! One of the most beautiful botanical gardens I have seen. Relatively small, but very well cared. I do like the part where you can see the fossils from Madeira, some kind of little museum in old building. There are plenty of viewpoints on the area as well as places with refreshments. Strongly recommend 😀

You need to get to the cable car early and buy tickets for gardens at the same time because the queues for the cable car get very long if you get there late. There are 2 x cable cars to get to the gardens. The gardens are great but you will need a few hours to see if property. Go in the spring is the best time to visit. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Small but very unique and well kept botanical garden. Certainly worth a visit when staying in the area. You can also ride the funicular here.

Although visiting in Feb/Mar there was still an abundance of plants and flowers to enjoy. A lovely morning or afternoon out when in Funchal. Highly recommended!

  • 5/5 Jim P. 1 year ago on Google
Really impressive gardens, easy to walk around, though on the side of a hill. There was so much to see, even if we were there at a poor time of year. Spring flowers were just starting to appear. Well worth a visit and, combined with the cable cars to get there and the Monte gardens, finished off with a toboggan home, a great day out!

  • 3/5 Lindsey H. 2 years ago on Google
Although there are a good collection of different plants here, the plot seems tired and there are a lot of areas under repair or construction (Aug 2021). It needs investment and a lot of work to bring it anywhere close to the beauty of the neighbouring Palace gardens. We visited both during our holiday to Madeira as we have an interest in horticulture, but if you only have time for one garden visit and enjoy the beauty of gardens more than wanting to see the different species of plants, then I'd definitely say stick with the Palace gardens. It does have a very small natural history museum on site that may be of interest too.

  • 3/5 Vsevolod R. 2 years ago on Google
Not worth visiting in august: fountains not working, many areas under repair, the place looked dry and tired. But you can still find some interesting and beautiful flowers.

If you are looking for a viewpoint where you can enjoy the full view of Funchal, this botanical garden is the place to be. It is a tranquil oasis on the island with bright colorful flowers and trees. There are two cute dogs and a few cute cats at the cafe, don’t forget to greet them!
