I was not impressed with the harassing/ aggressive nature of these fruit sellers. I appreciate that they’re trying to make business but it did make me feel very touristy. We finally gave in to have some fruit from one of the stalls upstairs. Having lived in Asia for 25 years I know how fresh fruit can/should be at a reasonable price. I should have been more picky to check the fruit I was given myself. But I could see it was overly ripe to the point when it was mushy. For €35 euros I certainly feel very ripped off. I could get fresh dragon fruits from Thailand for a fraction of the price.. Warning also for those who get nauseated the smell of fish. Not the best spot as the market with fish has an overpowering smell. The only nice bit was the plant section.

DO NOT BUY FROM THIS STAND! GUY SPEAKS GOOD ENGLISH BUT LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE PRICES. Charged us €12 for a date with a walnut in it and €6 for a mango you can buy in a supermarket. Other traders are expensive but worth buying some of the exotic fruit. This guy lets the entire market down I’m afraid!

Very pretty, colorful, beautiful 'presentation' but also very expensive compared to smaller stores. Also if you are like me and it is hard for you to say no, do not talk to the sellers that want to give you a sample of the fruit. If you decide to buy something they will try to force you to buy more by putting more in the bag without your consent. Of course if you point it out, they will give you less but prize will not be fair. You will still pay more for less.

The place looks nice, but the vendors chasing after you waving their banana-pineapple hybrid trying to convince you in different languages to taste it are really annoying. Some of them from the second floor got very rude once I declined and started to shoo me away.

Overpriced fruits and dried chillies. A real tourist trap to stay away from. The store owners will approach to let you try different samples without telling you the prices. You can take photos and try the samples but don't buy fruits there. Fruits that are on the street are much better in terms of prices.

Read! The place has an amazing atmosphere and is beautiful. However, the prices are extremely high for the exotic fruits which are sold mostly to tourists. The salespeople are well prepared and offer tastings of different fruit types which will make you want to buy some fruit - but don't! Go and walk around Funchal and buy from smaller sellers on the street or the supermarket. We walked outside the market and stumbled upon some fruit stalls maybe just some 100m from the market a the prices were 3-4 times less than in the Farmer's Market. We got played and bought some stuff which is fine, but we were surprised to see how huge the markup at the market was!

Colourful market with beautifully displayed fresh fruit and vegetables. A feast for the eyes. Best to come here on a Friday when the island’s farmers themselves have stalls and sell their own local produce. For us, visiting on a Thursday, it was a pretty market but it was very touristy too. Prices were expensive and most stalls are aimed at tourists. The fish market downstairs was fascinating. Small but a good selection of fish etc, with lots of locals shopping.

The Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers' Market) in Funchal is a bustling and iconic market that offers a diverse array of fresh produce, flowers, local crafts, and traditional Madeiran products. The market is renowned for its colorful and vibrant display of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. You'll find a wide variety of locally grown and seasonal items, including exotic fruits like passion fruit, bananas, and custard apples. The market also features a dedicated area for beautiful flowers and ornamental plants. It's a feast for the eyes with a burst of colors and fragrances. In addition to fresh produce, the market offers a variety of traditional Madeiran crafts, textiles, and souvenirs. You can find items like wicker baskets, embroidered linens, and ceramic tiles that reflect the local culture. The Mercado dos Lavradores is housed in a historic building known for its distinctive architectural features. The facade is adorned with beautiful Portuguese tiles, and the interior is a lively and bustling space filled with the vibrant energy of locals and tourists alike. Make sure to check their opening hours and days before you visit! The prices are expensive, but there are some fruits that you will only find here.

I really expected a big market full of products and stands. But its quite small and the stands are all selling the same overpriced fruits all over again. Some look quite bad and seem to be on their last day of shelf life or even past it.

I came on a day where it was raining off/on which really cut down on the crowds because this place can be a madhouse when the cruise ships are here. If you want to just wander, enjoy all the colors and various things to see and aren't looking to actually buy anything it's great. It's just one of those cool things to see if you can catch it at a good time but the fruit is seriously over priced and really geared to grab tourists. If there's an empty table somewhere to sit and just watch it all do it because it's certainly a people watching place!

The place looks nice if you want to take some photos, but DO NOT buy fruit or vegetables here. I was told by a local that this is the place where vendors scam tourists and sell them overpriced products. You can find reasonable priced fruits/veggies in smaller shops and supermarkets in Funchal

Definitely worth the visit to experience all the colours sounds and smells but I’d never buy from these types of stalls. I didn’t see any locals only tourists which is never a good sign. We did see lots of fruit we’d not seen before. Worth a visit for that.

It is a clean, colourful and beautiful food market! It has all kinds of products: fish, meat, vegetables, fruits, flowers, souvenirs, bakeries, cafes. The prices on the fruit are a bit higher than in other markets but it is worth it!

Smaller than expected market with quite expensive prices. Second floor is a bit cheaper (monstera fruit €19/kg vs €29/kg downstairs..). Vendors are pushy but overall nice to walk around and have a look. For mangoes etc better to buy by the street where it’s only €3-4/kg.

So, it is colorful and plenty of life. But only for a walk not really shopping. Many fruits and veggies are available, but there is authenticity lacking. All is prepared for touristic purposes and very expensive. You have to be very careful once tasting - fruits for tasting can have a sugar added and once you will buy some might taste differently.

The market is full of fruits and flowers which I've never seen in my life before. The flowers and plants seeds are sold by the women in traditional dresses. I saw a lot of tourists there. Except the fruits, flowers, souvenirs, coffee and wine shop there is the fish market downstairs. Plenty of regional, fresh fish. The market is located in the city centre.

One of Madeira attractions. Wonderful place to buy fruits and souvenirs. Fruits on the ground floor are more expensive

Worth a visit to see this market place even if only to wander around and browse the various fruit, fish and flower stalls. Souvenirs, leather goods and clothing etc can be purchased here too. Tourist info office on 2nd floor.

Fascinating market in the old town largely selling fruit but also some fabric and souvenirs. Nearby but not in the same building is the fish market. Fruit here is expensive but very different and the local stall holders are knowledgeable and happy to tell you all about their produce.

📣 Just visited the charming farmer's market here in Madeira! 🌿🍎 Such a delightful experience exploring the stalls and discovering unique souvenirs. And oh, the variety of fruits available there was astonishing—I came across so many delicious ones that I'd never even heard of before! 🍓🍊 A truly memorable visit indeed! 🌸🌞

It's a wonder place to spend time & alwamy first stop when I'm here (as it's close to bus stops and has bathroom, in the back on top floor). But please, please, please don't buy passion fruit here for 25 euros a kilo. It's an insane rip off, since you can buy it all over Funchal at small fruit stands or fruit stores for 1/20 the price! Enjoy.

The market opens at 7am, only open for half a day on Saturday and closed on Sunday. In the market there is opportunity to see them preparing the fish, buy fruit, vegetables, plants, flowers, seeds and herbs. It is displayed over two floors. The stores can change depending on the day of the week. It is colourful. On the top floor there is also a restaurant that is open the same time as the market. The market is used by the locals and you can see them come and go. If you want to purchase something the traders will explain which products are used for what.

Very beautiful market. Worth seeing. It is beautifully structured and you can see many varieties of fruit. It is not cheap. A red banana was 3.5€ and a pineapple banana was 10€ each. Only the pineapple-flavored one was ripe, the red one was still raw.

Really cool place. I would recommend being cautious of prices as some of the fruit stands were very expensive but everyone was friendly and there are plenty of places with good prices and amazing produce. I would highly recommend the cafes on the ground floor and sparking one on the first floor. There is also an amazing fish market on the far side. Well worth a visit if you are in the city

Great and wonderful market dull of home made stuff, fruits and vegetables. Also in back is fish market which we miss. You need to come asap. Good place to buy some exotic fruit to taste. It is possible to pay by card almost in every shop. Building have multiple entrances so u can’t miss it.

Interesting place to visit. All kinds of fruit and veg, local leather and Ccork goods, fish market interesting (but not for the faint-hearted).

We went there to buy some fruits, got the chance to try them in advance and choose 6 fruits and ended up with a bill of 60€! Totally not worth it! Do not take chairs upwards, they will really rip you off! In the markets on ground level you can get the pineapple banana for about 5-7€. When we got home, we recognized that they even gave us the wrong fruits. Don't go there! It looks really nice there, but the people upstairs were not honest.

Amazing. So much produce. Loads of interesting stalls selling all manner of fruits and vegetables, also has a bustling fish market for the freshest fish you could possibly want. Highly recommended.

Lovely market to get fresh fruit, flowers souvenirs. Lots of the traders let you try the fruit before you buy which is great. Also you can see the fish market and see what has been brought in that morning and purchase fresh straight off the boat.

Beautiful fruits' stands, prices are very high. Market closes at 1900. We came at 1800, and 80% of the stands were closed. Update: we passed by in midday. The market was very busy and vivid! Don't wait to late afternoon hours. The stalls on the right that sell exotic fruits sometime sell them at much higher prices. We paid 18 euro for 4 (four) fruits. Not all the fruits they put in the plastic bag were exactly the type/quality of what they gave us to taste.

Definitely overpriced market focusing on tourists, however it's possible here to taste fruits before buying them. Nice experience to eat pineapple-banana and others strange things. A little crowded, watch your belongings.

Similar with mercados you get in other cities like Barcelona, Genova and so on. It's very colorful, fresh and crowded. A lot of vendors give out little samples of exotic fruits. I've tasted local grown banana and it tastes amazing! Totally different than South American bananas! There's fresh fish available and lots of seeds and dried stuff available.

Very famous place in Funchal, a lot of fruits and vegetables! There is a part of the market where they sell local fresh fish 🎣 The prices are for tourists.

Excellent selection of fruits and vegetables. In addition other clothing and other tourist items for sale. Prices were lower here than around The Forum area.

Loved the wide variety of fresh produce (specially fruit, veggies and fish!) and the busy-market vibes. Full with tourists but also locals.

Been here on two visits to Funchal and had a really good time here on both occasions, very much enjoyed the shopping. Lots of tasty fresh fruit and vegetables here as well as a wide variety of beautiful fresh flowers. Around the fresh produce stalls are a wide range of tourists shops. Next door is the fish market where you can see the freshly caught scabbard fish. The upstairs has a couple of eateries but if I was to recommend anywhere inside it would be the little drinkery where you can get one of several freshly made ponchos. Very tasty.

Lots of vendors selling fruits and goods. Only a few selling fish. Pretty fun to browse. We tasted a number of things, then had a steak sandwich to share. A few good cafes and restaurants attached so you can browse, and then sit down and eat or drink.
