Excellent and friendly place to stay. Rooms large with excellent views of the beautiful sea and the hotel gardens. Great facilities such as indoor pool, bar, spa, games room and many more things. Staff were amazing and friendly who all had great knowledge of places to see and visit. Definitely a place to visit!

Absolutely fantastic break here. The staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. Spa and the massage treatment was great. Breakfast delicious. Lovely gardens and pools. 2 star Michelin restaurant on site. What more could you ask for?

If I’m being honest, it’s not what it sells as. It’s really just… Eh. Maybe I’m sounding too posh and all, but it seems more like one of those instances where it sounds amazing, then they arrive and it isn’t what it sounds like. It’s like some sort of fancy old people’s home. The saltwater pool feels very limited. The only 3 (4 if you count the bar) restaurants on site are mostly mediocre. Food doesn’t really seem impressive. And as for the Michelin place? I didn’t go there. Too expensive. And anyway, the food there seemed like it was more for show than for eating. Apparently this is one of 3 5 star hotels on the island(maybe I’m wrong), but I think you should consider other options.

The hotel is so outdated and desperate for a renovation. The room is dark with no ceiling lights and furniture is so old. The free toiletries are supposely from ”the ritual ” but did not smell good at all. Spa area is smelly and needs renovating, didnt give the zen relaxing feeling. Many old people sit around the pool area, fully clothed reading books… Breakfast was repetitive and quickly became boring. Staff are not very professional and friendly as you would expect on a 5 star hotel. Unless you are a senior and retired, this is certainly not a place for you. One star goes to the cleaning team, they are doing an amazing job to keep this outdated place a tad more attractive.

Hotel built in the mid 1990s into the cliffs, so no beach, but very well designed. Short walk into Funchal, plus loads of restaurants and supermarkets nearby. 10% discount with their loyalty scheme. No espresso machine. Also they are building a villa on the west side of the hotel from 0800-2000 six days a week. However with the balcony door closed it was pretty much quiet. TV switched on every time we entered the room. Huge bed but it was two mattresses put together. However well run, happy staff and spotless rooms. Unrivalled views!

Fantastic hotel, incredible friendly & helpful staff. We were upgraded on our arrival without asking to a stunning suite. The food is incredible and has such a large variety of options for breakfast. The gardens are a delight to see, so green and lush. There is a seawater pool, spa, two restaurants, access to the sea, and a jacuzzi, to name just a few of the facilities. The hotel is situated close to Funchal Town and is central for stunning restaurants. It's a great place to stay.

**TL;DR:** The Cliff Bay hotel is a fantastic place to regenerate. It is well located, offers many attractions, and has excellent service. The view on the ocean is worth the price. The food is delicious and light. I recently stayed at the Cliff Bay hotel on Madeira, and I was absolutely blown away. The hotel is located in a stunning setting, right on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The views from the hotel are simply breathtaking. The hotel itself is very luxurious, with spacious rooms and impeccable service. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and they go out of their way to make sure you have a memorable stay. The hotel has a variety of amenities, including several swimming pools, a spa, and a fitness center. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars on-site, so you won't have to go far for a bite to eat or a drink. I especially enjoyed the food at the hotel. The restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, and the dishes are all made with fresh, local ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the seafood dishes, which were cooked perfectly. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at the Cliff Bay hotel. It is a truly luxurious and relaxing place to stay, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special getaway. I would definitely stay at the Cliff Bay hotel again, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a luxurious and relaxing vacation.

Amazing stay at The Cliff Bay Hotel. Rooms were big, really clean, food was amazing and staff were very friendly. Breakfast in the morning was very good and well organised with a wide selection. Drinks and food by the pool also very good. The sea access was amazing. Was brilliant to jump off from the pier every morning. Wouldn't stay anywhere else in Madeira this is the place to be.

We had a wonderful stay at The Cliff Bay Hotel. The location is absolutely beautiful with sea view from every room. It is quiet and right by the waterfront with ocean access from the downstairs area with a nice seawater pool. The service is also great and we loved the dinner menu on the terrace of the restaurant Rose Garden with a view to the ocean and a lovely three course menu every evening. The hotel is in walking distance (30min) to Funchal city center and there is also a bus stop or rental car stations located close by which makes it a perfect base for exploring the island.

Lovely hotel and well presented. Part of the PortoBay collection as is Porto Mare where we are staying. We only had a cup of tea so cannot coment on the rooms, but going on the cleanliness and design of the hotel I should think they are very nice, just like Porto Mare. The flower arrangements within the foyer are stunning and the atmosphere very relaxed.

We were looking for a realaxing gateaway, and we found it! The staff is professional and welcoming, special thanks to Carla. Cleaners are very kind and smiling! The room is big, the view over the ocean is amazing. We enjoyed the breakfast with many tasting options. The hotel, located close to the main promenade, has beautiful flowers, is extremely clean and it's the ideal place to recharge your batteries. We recommend it, and hope to come back.

Smart hotel on the cliff top. Definitely recommend going for a Seaview room. The rooms are kept spotlessly clean. Personally, I found the mattress too hard for my taste and never had a good night's sleep, but that's just me. Almost without exception the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. There are two pools. The first is on the ground floor (or cliff top), the second down a further lift at sea level. There is no beach, but there is access to the sea via a small pier and steps. There can be a very strong rip around the pier and sea swimming can be stopped even if the conditions seem otherwise calm. Breakfast is fairly standard. Be careful of the scrambled eggs under the lights For some reason, they can have a peculiar smell and taste. This was not a one off occurrence. The hotel offers a sort of half board at check in. It's definitely worth considering as it does represent a saving. Dinner was in the Rose Garden restaurant and the food was of an exceptional standard. Special mention for the Creme Brulee. Happy hour in the Cliff Bar 1700-1800. If you want to eat out, go out the main gate and turn left. You will find numerous restaurants to suit all tastes. I can recommend Casa Espetada and the Atlantic. Turning right out of the gate, a minute's walk takes you to a bus stop. This includes a stop for the Yellow Bus hop on hop off tour, bookable in the hotel. The buses arrive there roughly 15m before and 15m after the hour. All in all, it is a very good hotel and one I would be quite happy to return to.

This hotel is amazing! I loved everything - starting from the service quality (reception, cleaning, restaurant), rooms, food, location, facilities, views, sundecks an so on. I'd especially like to thank the whole team that made this stay amazing! The reception (always ready to help), cleaning personnel (the room was spotless and the service was there a couple of times a day to see if everything is ok) and the waiters and other kitchen personnel. Everyone was nice, polite, smiling and willing to help. Btw the guests were all very kind and well-behaved, there were no drunken people disturbing everyone else, no loud parties at night. I'd definitely recommend this place. Hardly ever did I come across such a wonderful place that I will remember forever. Plus they have a two str MIchelin restaurant, but for this I will post another review.

If I could give half-stars, this would be a 4.5 star rating. It was a wonderful experience, there were just a few things that weren't ideal. We will definitely be recommending this hotel to others though!

I loved this hotel! It evokes such a sense of peace. The grounds are absolutely stunning, with so many nice places to sit and just take in the beauty. The staff were warm and kind. The rooms are a bit dated but I think that's part of the charm. The spa and pool are fantastic and open to all guests.

Our first stay here was a good one. The location was nice, far enough away from the craziness of the central tourist area but close enough to walk there. Well maintained facilities and the staff was obviously well trained and were always guest centered. The view of the harbor, bay, and Atlantic from our room was well worth the price of the upgrade! The breakfast was very enjoyable too. One suggestion...The front desk can be a bit chaotic, we were interrupted during check-in several times by a very boisterous Tui guide needing information. Perhaps providing a separate tourist/Information desk away from the check-in area would help remedy this, we saw it happening throughout our stay. The small desk that is somewhat hidden to the right rarely had anyone staffing it so it was unclear what its purpose was.

Overall a fantastic experience at the Cliff Bay Hotel in Funchal. Nestled on the cliffs overlooking the bay, this hotel has everything you can offer and is equipped with wonderfully exceptional staff. Centrally located on the island, you can drive anywhere on the island un under 1 hour (and many hiking spots in the mountains are about 35 min out. The free breakfast on site was awesome. If you can’t be satisfied by their many offerings, then it is you who has the problem! The restaurants on-site are all of very high quality. We had lunch at Avista on our first day and we were impressed with the quality and elevated nature of the cuisine. The views from our room was amazing and the staff were so friendly! There is a pool for everyone; whether you want the zen of the spa-level pool, or the blue lagoon, or an infinity pool with a view… they have it all… and parking was free! We came to hike, stayed 6 nights here, and would recommend it to anyone from young couples who have a hiking agenda or other older couples who are looking for the 5-star experience with high end culinary options.

Have been here 7 days so far and our stay has been wonderful ( so relaxing). The staff are so friendly and helpful. It's my wife's birthday today and she was so thrilled when we got back from swimming to find the hotel had left a chocolate cake and a bottle of spumanti (with glasses) in our room. Thank you so much, it has made her day. Colin Rouse

I love this hotel (more like a resort)! We first stayed there 6 years ago and now again recently until June 4, 2023. It is still in great shape; no wear on details as one sees in some hotels as they age. Service all round is tops. I don't expect to be treated royally but they really do. Above & beyond. The morning breakfast buffet still feels like the classy restaurant it is, in a classy hotel, not a cafeteria. There are so many places to eat and get sun, and no attention feels neglected. It's a good walk to see Funchal and explore, which I could do every day. So many options from this location. The next time I come to Madeira, I am staying here for the whole stay. I really regret that this last time I did not. Anything outside of the Porto Bay chain is a disappointment by comparison, in my humble opinion.

Excellent hotel, great quality food, friendly & attentive staff, ideal location with sweeping views of beautiful bays. Special mention for Ana - restaurant manager in Blue Lagoon - her customer service was outstanding. We’ll be going back soon!!

Absolutely stunning hotel and location. Staff are attentive and very friendly. A great hotel to either sit by one of the pools and relax or to go out and explore. Loved every minute of our stay.

Literally the best hotel I have ever been to. The view was AMAZING and the staff was the best! Breakfast was always on point and there were multiple options to choose from. If in one of the days you don't feel like going out the hotel offers 3 restaurants. Literally this hotel made my holiday. If I will come back to Madeira, I will always come to this hotel.

Love this place. Soothing and relaxing in a delightful setting with lovely staff. Highly recommend this hotel. No beach but fantastic pools and a pontoon into the sea. 5 star luxury at its best. Not a single complaint. Amazing!!!!

We have just returned having spent 11 nights and what a wonderful stay we had. The hotel is just lovely, so clean, the staff do a great job and friendly. The restaurants, breakfast, dinner, poolside bars, food and services excellent. So many areas to relax inside and out. We didn't try the spa but it looked amazing. The pools are great, as are the options of sun beds and seating. The hotel has a lovely feel to it. Thank you we will be back. David Lister & Pam White

Stunning hotel, beautiful setting. In door, out door pools. Access to the sea. Staff are helpful and friendly. Breakfast was delicious. Make sure to book the restaurants in advance (before you travel) as they can be full.

Had I realized before I arrived how amazing this place would be, I would've booked a full week! It started before I even arrived, when the hotel reached out to arrange transportation from the airport. Upon check in I was upgraded to a bay view room, which was beautiful! The pool facilities were excellent, and I even booked a spa day despite my intentions to hike the entire weekend. I cannot say enough about this resort, and hope to return soon!

The most relaxing hotel & vacation we’ve had in years. No request was too much. Quality everywhere. Our room was perfect & the view superb. Massage, AVISTA dinner, happy hour Madeira wine, breakfast in paradise. Service plus plus plus. I can’t wait to return very soon.

We have just come back from a weeks stay in the Cliff Bay, it was fabulous. We could not fault it in any way, it was probably the best hotel I have stayed in any where in the world. The setting is beautiful, the food is exceptional, we dined in the two star Michelin restaurant one night and the experience was out of this world. The staff are so attentive and the place spotlessly clean, can't wait to return.

This is one of those hotels, that if you returned to Madeira and stayed somewhere else you are going to regret not returning to Cliff Bay! Rooms and restaurants with stunning views out over the ocean or over Funchal bay. It oozes luxury and quality. The staff are professional yet personal and do everything they can to make your stay memorable. The dining is excellent from the buffet breakfast, to the experience of ultimate fine dining, all under one roof. Two heated pools, access to the sea and yes it is warm enough to swim in! A well equipped gym and Spa. Musical experiences from exceptional musicians. Everything you could possibly need. 48hrs after our arrival we received a satisfaction questionnaire from guest services asking how they could improve our experience. Pretty damn hard? We like, in fact we love the late afternoon sun on our hotel balcony. We mentioned this and within 24 hrs had been offered another room which provided that sun. Now that's what you call service - going that extra mile. If we return to Madeira, why would we want to go anywhere else!

Incredible hotel. The staff are so lovely and do a great job. The room I was in had an amazing sea view with a nice balcony. The whole place just feels comfortable and relaxing. The spa and pool area is free to use for guests and is perfect to relax and enjoy the view of the bay. Breakfast incredible and served infront of very pretty garden. Yes it's more expensive than other hotels in the area, but you get what you pay for here, and is perfect for a treat.
