The hotel officially is ranked as 4 star hotel. I would be more generous and gave it 4+ to 5 stars. Beautiful gardens, top quality food, great spa, 4 (incl child) swimming pools, tennis table decent gym with cardio area, big class/stretching area and free weight room. Bar with happy hour, 3 restaurants and day lunch bar by the pool. Huge rooms with very nice balconies and stunning views... Add mild whatever the weather - What else anybody could wish for their holiday however long or short?

This is our 3rd time in the hotel but first time with 2 children (8&6y) and first time since Covid. The hotel has done exceptionally well to deal with the changing environment and we have had the most relaxing experience which has been so long over due! Would highly recommend to anyone for a relaxing get away who also loves good food!

Located in a lush area just 5 minutes with Bus/Taxi from the center, with nice restaurants and walking strips. However, the Hotel itself is so nice you don't really need to leave it in the first place. Of course you get bored after a day or so. But the hotel food prices are surprisingly good, I expected them to rob me for eating by the pool - they didn't. We traveled there with our two little kids, there are lots of different pool- and play areas. The kids were happy, but there are not that many families when we stayed here. Great breakfast buffet as well.

The hotel offers great services, comfort and a wonderful, large and well maintained garden with pools, bar and views. Rooms are spacious, with wide terraces, very clean and the toiletries are good quality from ‘Rituals’. Car parks are free during the stay and the bus station is just in front of the hotel in case you don’t have a car. 3 different restaurants within the complex you can choose from, a bar, gym , spa, extensive and comfortable seating in common areas. I would definitely chose this hotel again, it’s just great value.

This hotel certainly has the potential to be a 5 star if a few improvements were made. The positives - the hotel itself from the outside is lovely, the pool is great surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers. Pool bar and snacks are good with good waiter service especially Helena and Ruben they always have service with a smile. The pool temperature is a bit too cold, many people were put off buy how cold the water is, if it was a few degrees warmer like the spa pool I think more people would use the main pool. Buffet breakfast has a great selection and always fresh including a great egg man making nice omelettes and fresh fried eggs. The spa is beautiful with great treatment options, sauna and steam indoor/outdoor pools and jacuzzi. Staff are friendly and spa sells espa products. The hotel also has tennis courts, orchid Gardens and is linked to another hotel next door Eden Mar (which I cannot comment on as we did not visit this hotel). All rooms are supplied with Rituals bathroom products. The points that need improving in my opinion. The rooms need a major update each room has patterned carpet which is worn and isn't looking or smelling too fresh. A splash of paint and new floors would massively improve the rooms. The bathrooms are nice but again small improvements are needed as the bathroom shower seals are not good and water comes through to the floor tiles which is leaving mildew stains and smell ( this could be easily fixed). The minibars are empty in the rooms. This is a small detail which makes hotels feel more equipped to be able to reach into your minibar and grab a fresh water when you are thirsty in the middle of the night. (Again this is something that can easily be improved) The hotel reception lobby has been updated and is a nice welcome with the fresh plants and new furniture but the hallways to the rooms again are very dated with old patterned carpets which are worn and stained in places (this is the problem with carpets it makes it hard for hotels to keep them looking fresh unfortunately). They should use the SPA fragrances around the hotel. The SPA is a massive asset to this hotel and it should be more advertised. To have the same SPA fragrance at the hotel reception and around the hotel hallways would help it to have a better relaxing feeling for guests. The final pointer is that the hotel advertises breakfast between 7.30 to 10.30. This should be that guests can still arrive as the last sitting at 10.30 and be able to get breakfast. Unfortunately the hotel see 10.30 as breakfast being cleared away which is not good service. If breakfast is until 10.30 then guests should be able to arrive at 10.30 and have time to explore the buffet and eat their food and get fresh tea and coffee. On 2 occasions we came to breakfast at 10.15 and food was being cleared from the buffet at 10.31. Waiters stopped serving and instead were tidying the tables away. This does not make guests feel welcome Either breakfast is until 10.30 for guests and therefore food should still be available for guests to eat until 11am. Or if you need the food cleared by 10.30 for particular reasons the you should only advertise to guests that breakfast finishes at 10am so that they still have time to get food and are not rushed. Overall I would stay at this hotel again and would recommend but I would love to see this hotel live up to what potential it has be implementing small changes to make it feel a better experience for their guests. X

A very good 4* hotel. We stayed here twice during our visits to Madeira and both times it met our expectations. Rooms, premises and swimming pools are very well looked after. The staff is very polite and will always do their best to help and accommodate. The breakfast buffet has a very good variety of dishes and is very reasonably priced. I look forward to coming here again.

We had an amazing experience in Hotel Porto Mare. The staff go above and beyond and the hotel with its gardens and facilities definitely has a 'wow' factor. The area is beautiful as well with a boulevard in front and enough restaurants to choose from if you'd like to go outside of the hotel.

Amazing hotel ! We got the sea view room and it did not disappoint! There's 2 big outdoor pools and 2 indoor pools that goes to the outdoors! Has an amazing spa which I would recommend booking yourself into for a massage! The food in the hotel is top drawer. Beds are super comfy, rooms are super clean! Would 100% recommend you stay here!

Visited here for the 2nd time first 2 week's of July and was not disappointed. This is a really good hotel and I just hope it manages to continue to avoid the idiot crowd. Light, bright and airy with a modern touch. Excellent hard working staff that are friendly and work very hard. The rooms are very clean with everything you could possibly need, we had one this time with a lounge and a lovely big balcony to sunbathe on. The food was excellent and very good quality with a choice of sitting inside or outside. A marvellous pool situated in beautifully kempt gardens with a variety of different sunbathing area's and a fantastic sea view. Made even better with no annoying blaring music and no animation team. Lovely pool bar and civilised lunch area. Well located with easy access into Funchal. Friends have already enjoyed this recommendation and we will visit again in the future, hoping it will be the same calm oasis.

Das Hotel war einfach der Wahnsinn. Wir wurden sehr herzlich empfangen. Die Dame an der Rezeption sprach sogar deutsch (was ich absolut nicht voraussetzte) Wir hatten ein Doppelzimmer mit Meerblick und das Zimmer war echt riesig im Vergleich zu anderen Hotelzimmern. Das Personal war wahnsinnig Freundlich und der Service sehr gut. Die Außenanlagen des Hotels ist wunderschön 😍 Sauberkeit 1a 👍🏻

Booked this place by mistake, but boy, we weren't disappointed. Ideally located, close to the promenade, shops bars and restaurants, the hotel is gorgeous. Spacious reception at the head of the horseshoe-shaped accommodation, most of the rooms have a view of the pool area and sea. The pool area itself is well tended, stocked with native plants, trees and fauna, and there's even a small botanical garden to explore. A large pool has plenty of loungers available, with other loungers placed thoughtfully around the gardens. There's also a pool bar that serves you drinks and a good menu of meals of various sizes - snacks to a full 3 course meal. Attentive and efficient staff wait on the tables. And the staff.... Throughout the hotel the staff are welcoming and efficient. You really couldn't ask for better service. Our room was labelled 'superior' as we wanted a sea/pool view, rather than a street. It was welcoming and a great size. There were two double beds close together, desk, wardrobes and a table and chairs. The whole far wall was glass, patio doors leading to the spacious balcony. Also in the room was a safe (free), unstocked fridge (though you could buy a snack and drink package from reception), large TV, wi-fi extender, and wardrobes. The bathroom was modern and spacious. There was a UK 3 pin plug socket for your straighteners or hair dryer (a hair dryer was also provided for you) and an over the bath shower. Which worked! Strong and hot water... The room was turned down everyday, with fresh towels. All in all, a great experience in a lovely hotel, with welcoming staff and a great location. In fact, the whole of Madeira was a lovely holiday, despite (or perhaps because of) dodging the odd rain shower. Thinking of booking? Don't hesitate....

Hotel Porte Mare: This should be a 5 star + hotel! (I have stayed at 5 star accommodation in Madeira and it was not such a good experience, very sterile and spartan!). The hotel surpasses in quality of furnishings, decor and superior gardens, with over 500 botanicsl species. There are 5 pools and 4 restaurants Staffing is very professional yet friendly. The entertainmenent is excellent and there is plenty in the hotel for children to do. Location is near all the restaurants and promenades. A children's Lidio is close by and safe with life guards. All in all a fabulous experience and l shall stay there again as l consider it one of the best l have been to!

The noise from a restaurant in the street to the west of the hotel is incredible - very, very loud music. Do not, under any circumstances accept a room looking out to the west. Apparently the hotel “call the police after 11pm” which tells you all you need to know.

Great hotel! From the breakfast to the room facilities, everything was extraordinary! Food is very good, rooms are very clean and cozy, pools are so diverse and staff is just amazing! You can dine in the main restaurant at dinner or you can choose the restaurants that belong to the hotel - you must have a reservation for this. I also received a champagne for my birthday, it was a pleasant surprise! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making our holiday so comfortable!

Standout feature of this hotel is the beautiful garden, which is lovely to walk around at any time of the day. Our room was very spacious and the bed very comfortable. The water pipe from the next door room was, however, very loud, which meant we were woken up early on some mornings. The breakfast is good quality, just missing a few more cooked vegetables. Thank you for a lovely stay!

I had a great week staying at this hotel, the staff were friendly and always on hand if you needed something. I only had breakfast in the hotel but your spoilt for choice and was never boring. I can only assume the other meals would be of the same standard. The facilities were great and the only fine side was the pool was freezing, but I did visit in Nov/Dec. So I should moan really. All in all thank you to the staff for a great week :)

Unser Aufenthalt war (wieder) sehr angenehm, es ist alles sehr sauber, der Pool war wirklich außerordentlich sauber (wie kriegt man das hin?) und wurde streng kontrolliert. Respekt auch vor dem qualitativ hochwertigen Essen am Abend! Das Personal ist durchweg freundlich und gut ausgebildet. Ganz herzlichen Dank zudem für den hervorragenden Einsatz von Cäcilia bei der Zimmervergabe! Man merkt, das Cäcilia ihren Job mit viel Hingabe, Einsatz und Fachwissen ausübt. Sie bleibt uns in ganz toller Erinnerung und ist sicher auch ein Grund dafür, erneut ein Portobay Hotel zu buchen! Das Rabattprogramm bei erneutem Besuch ist mit klaren Prozentabzügen (10% bei Silverstatus) sehr effektiv!

Sehr schönes Hotel!!! Wir hatten ein großes Zimmer im 5. Stock mit herrlichen Blick über den Garten und Pool bis zum Meer. Sehr große  Poolanlage in einem wunderbar bepflanzten und gepflegten Garten. Ansprechendes Restaurant mit der Möglichkeit draußen zu sitzen. Das Essen ist gut, große Vielfalt an den Buffets, ein bisschen wenig gewürzt. Super freundliches Service Personal! Immer freie Liegen am Pool oder Garten verfügbar. Besonders gut hat uns auch das Hallenbad mit Außenpool  und Whirlpool gefallen. Somit konnten wir auch bei kühlerem bzw. windigen Wetter schwimmen gehen. Wir würden das Hotel auf jeden Fall weiter empfehlen!

No complaints at all, fantastic hotel all round. Great pools, rooms are lovely, great staff, food excellent. Would recommend the Hotra restaurant. Always free loungers when we went, late school hols.

The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The rooms were spacious and clean and the staff was very welcoming and helpful. It is definitely worth the price, also the breakfast was really good. Inside the hotels there are plenty of restaurants and a big park with birds, pools and the spa. I can’t wait to come back already. Highly recommended!

We stayed here during covid in 2021 booked through a 3rd party booking service. We felt more welcomed then and we even got an upgrade at the time. This time because we loved it so much we booked directly through booking.com. Unfortunately I booked a standard room which was different from the one we had last time. We asked at reception kindly if we could upgrade and pay the difference. The receptionist looked puzzled and even annoyed at an innocent question - we didn't ask it to be free and we were willing to pay. We were dismissed quickly and we felt really awkward about it... Everyone else was nice, some staff at the breakfast don't seem to speak Portuguese and that can be a bit annoying since we are in Portugal and my older mother for example doesn't speak English... The room is ok, carpets make it a bit hot and personally would prefer wooden floors for hygiene. The toiletries are fantastic from Rituals. The pools are fantastic, clean. The outdoor smaller one is quite cold but the weather was cloudy ao maybe that was why.

We had a fantastic time just before Christmas with our little one (aged 2). Beautiful hotel, pools and food was great. Reception very helpful too, thank you.

First time in Madeira. Love love loved it. We were in room 2103 which overlooked pool bar and pools. Considering that, it wasn't noisy at all. Don't know what it would be like in height of summer. The floral display in the reception area is really beautiful complete with Waterfall. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful, well manicured and you can visit orchid Gardens. Lovely and cool down there. Gym is a good size. Arts and craft room for children a good size. Spa pool is massive and I like that it opens up to the outside. We used the mini golf. There's children's playground suitable to entertain little ones. A walk down towards the Lido, you will find many eateries, seafood ones as well, and a large green space where you can relax under shady trees, play football etc.

They have 4 stars but as you can see from my pictures I think they should have 5. Booked a junior suite, to avoid the line travelers curse(deepest, darkest corner)

Love this hotel have been coming for many years. I would say the only problem is the bars opposite the hotel where the Melia Mare is situated. They can be noisy at times.

Our fifth visit to this outstanding hotel with beautiful scenery. The staff are friendly, efficient and helpful. The food in the Atlantida restaurant which we used for breakfast and dinner was excellent .we cannot wait to return.

Overall 5 stars, the whole experience there was enoyable. Starting from the service, the outdoor gardens, the cute birds in the giant birdcage, the cocktails next to the pool, the neat little orchids garden, ... Breakfast buffet was good, we especially enjoyed the waffles and all the fresh fruit. Evening buffet is not really worth it for the price, also the buffet themes did not seem to hit the mark. That was easily fixable thoght, the attached restaurants (Alfama and Il Basilico) are great and there are good restaurants all around outside the place. Gladly will go there again!

Had an enjoyable stay at this property with a friend. The vegetarian/vegan food could have been more plentiful and better labelled - particularly at the evening salad bar when it was difficult to ascertain which label related to which dish. One fairly big gripe - the spa treatment rooms were closed during our stay for 'staff training'. We were not informed of this before we arrived - in fact any pre-departure e-mails referred to the spa and the treatments available. We asked the reception staff both in the spa and the front desk if they would be kind enough to contact the spa in one of their sister hotels to book us in for treatments - unfortunately they all declined to help us.

A beautiful hotel! Rooms are spacious and clean, the garden is breathtaking and the pools are magnificent. There is nothing to pick on other than the internet. Well, the internet is slow, uselessly slow at times. An internet update is absolutely due.

The employes are great , but maybe not enough employeees? The rooms are good but the pool bar is bad as you can see. First priority seems to be $

We had a great time in portomare, the hotel is very nice and clean, the food is good with lots of choice, the evening singers are talented. The only thing that displeased us was the caged birds, they are very beautiful but it is not necessary, the same for the falconer. We particularly appreciated the friendliness of the staff, especially at the pool bar and at the portofino :)

Fantastic hotel. Great food and drinks, excellent friendly service, loyalty discounts now we have been more than once. Apartments on the Residence are so spacious and comfortable. We will be back again in the future.

As we are visiting The Residence in November rather than our usual February stay, we were given a different appartment. Exactly the same layout, just a different view. Still a pretty good outlook though. It's great to be back in our second home. #damncovid19

Excellent location, breakfast v good selection, lunches v good. Didn't have evening meals. V well located for lots of restaurants and walks. Thoroughly recommend.
