Unawatuna
was
at
the
end
of
our
tour
of
Sri
Lanka
where
we
wanted
to
relax
and
chill
after
a
hectic
week
of
sightseeing.
We
chose
the
Nooit
Gedacht
Heritage
hotel
for
its
history
and
charm
along
with
its
proximity
to
the
beach.
The
room
we
originally
booked
was
a
standard
double
which
would
have
been
OK
for
one
or
two
days
but
for
1
week
we
just
found
it
too
small
and
dark
so
we
upgraded
a
superior
double
and
glad
we
did.
the
two,
two
story
blocks
to
the
left
and
right
of
the
pool
are
the
superior
rooms
with
the
standard
rooms
in
the
area
of
the
grounds
between
the
main
building
and
the
pool
under
the
canopy
of
some
rather
large
trees
and
bamboo.
The
Superior
rooms
were
bright
clean
and
spacious
with
a
balcony
overlooking
the
pool
and
gardens.
The
original
building
maintains
its
heritage
status
but
can
be
a
little
gloomy
at
times.
Breakfast
tends
to
be
the
same
each
day
with
fruit
shake,
fresh
fruit,
Tea
&
Coffee,
cake,
eggs
of
choice
with
2
sausage,
toast
and
jam.
We
ate
most
evenings
in
the
restaurant
and
the
food
was
good,
however
as
vegetarians
it
did
limit
the
choice
a
little.
Following
a
chat
with
Pradeep
the
chef
we
were
able
to
adapt
some
menu
options.
July
is
the
low
season
for
Sri
Lanka
and
there
were
a
number
of
new
members
of
staff
undergoing
their
training
under
the
watchful
eye
of
Nimal
the
manager.
It
is
a
short
walk
to
the
beach.
Right
out
of
the
hotel
then
1st
right
where
there
are
many
shops
and
cafes.
There
are
two
ATM
machines
directly
opposite
the
hotel
which
is
very
convenient
as
Sri
Lanka
is
in
the
main
a
cash
culture,
even
hotels
require
payment
by
cash.
The
currency
is
also
a
closed
currency
so
can
not
be
obtain
before
arrival.
There
is
always
a
tuktuk
outside
to
take
you
anywhere
you
want
within
reason.
He
dropped
us
at
the
Galle
fort
and
then
came
back
to
collect
us
2
hours
later
for
1500lkr.
He
also
gave
a
running
commentary
as
we
drove
along.
We
enjoyed
our
stay
at
the
Nooit
Gedacht
Heritage
hotel
and
have
booked
to
return
in
February
2024.
There
are
monkeys,
monitor
lizards
and
a
large
number
of
exotic
birds
in
the
grounds
which
makes
it
a
joy
to
just
sit
and
watch
the
wildlife.
Also
be
aware
if
you
have
an
upper
level
room
you
will
probably
hear
the
monkeys
on
the
roof
at
night
either
for
warmth
from
the
tiles
or
just
transiting
from
tree
to
tree.
Note
the
only
downside
is
there
are
lots
of
mosquitoes
both
in
the
grounds
and
around
the
pool
and
dinning
areas.
Usually
under
the
tables.
Ensure
you
pack
plenty
of
repellent
and
wear
long
trouser
in
the
evenings.
