What a perfect stay for the first leg of our Sri Lankan holiday. Our room was a good size and well equipped. The veranda looked out over a very clean and perfect temperature pool surrounded by extremely comfortable sun loungers. With the lake and beautifully manicured gardens, it offers a peaceful location to relax. You can imagine the main hotel as its former residence to the Governor in all it's elegant grandeur. The staff are friendly and helpful. Perfect location for a saunter to shops, cafes and restaurants. However the highlight has to be THE most delicious vegetable curries with fish or chicken - ask for 'no bones'. Not only is it THE best Sri Lankan curry we have had but great value. Head to the Jungle Beach with a tuk tuk - steep climb but worth it. Sunbeds, umbrellas and café. Even a nice clean loo there!

We stood 2 weeks in the nooit gedacht hotel had a wonderful time there. The staff was really friendly and the service very good. The hotel manager Jude always helped us if we had any needs or questions. You can feel that they all do their job by heart. The place is quiet and provides a nice large pool. It has a beautiful garden surrounding which take care of daily. We really recommend the hotel and will definitely come back again.

Very nice heritage place to stay with indoor and outdoor dining. They serve really delicious food, we had simple veg curry with rice and fish curry with rice, but food was super yummy. Probably our best meal in Unawatuna. The rooms are extremely clean and spacious. However, they definitely have a ant problem which may be attributed to the location and surrounding, but it's not an annoyance. Breakfast is sumptuous. We were there during off season hence there was no buffet. But it was an unlimited breakfast. There is also swimming with a beautiful green mountain view. About 7-10mins walk to the beach.

Located in a great area. Loved the room and they have a great pool. Staff was so helpful starting from the reception to the room service. Didn’t enjoyed their breakfast much but kinda ok. Prices are kinda ok. Had a great time and definitely recommending them.

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights. The property is beautiful and has the heritage bungalow feel. But we were disappointed by lack of maintenance- the AC was making a loud ticking sound when switching on, the fan was making noise, and the blinds outside the balcony couldn't be hoisted up. They tied them up after asking them to do so, without which the view of the pool would be partially blocked. The restaurant staff were extremely good and helpful, but we were disappointed with the room service when they failed to provide an extra blanket after asking thrice. The English breakfast served was good. The view from the room was really pleasing. There is a swamp in the property due to which there are too many mosquitoes. It's impossible to spend time beside the pool without being bit by several of them. Also take care not to leave the room doors open, or you'll not be able to sleep at night.

Having a glamorous traditional atmosphere. However rooms are not into the traditional look and experience. Rooms are clean. Worth the price paid. However the hotel garden and swimming pools could have been managed better.

Highly recommended, we were given with highly efficient and friendly service and the hotel itself was beautiful with colonial structures preserved. Amazing food and a great place for a relaxing getaway in Unawatuna. Looking forward to coming back ☺️

It's a sad place and I can not recommend to go there at the moment. The location, the spacious garden and the staff are nice, but it's needs some serious renovation. The rooms smell mouldy, there is insufficient airflow and you can see the mould on the walls. The pool water is murky and does not invite for a swim.

Absolutely loved our stay here.. Beautiful oasis hidden away in the busy tourist town of Unawatuna. The staff are absolutely fantastic, shout out to the hotel owner Pragna and the manager Nimal. Thank you very much for everything.

Unawatuna was at the end of our tour of Sri Lanka where we wanted to relax and chill after a hectic week of sightseeing. We chose the Nooit Gedacht Heritage hotel for its history and charm along with its proximity to the beach. The room we originally booked was a standard double which would have been OK for one or two days but for 1 week we just found it too small and dark so we upgraded a superior double and glad we did. the two, two story blocks to the left and right of the pool are the superior rooms with the standard rooms in the area of the grounds between the main building and the pool under the canopy of some rather large trees and bamboo. The Superior rooms were bright clean and spacious with a balcony overlooking the pool and gardens. The original building maintains its heritage status but can be a little gloomy at times. Breakfast tends to be the same each day with fruit shake, fresh fruit, Tea & Coffee, cake, eggs of choice with 2 sausage, toast and jam. We ate most evenings in the restaurant and the food was good, however as vegetarians it did limit the choice a little. Following a chat with Pradeep the chef we were able to adapt some menu options. July is the low season for Sri Lanka and there were a number of new members of staff undergoing their training under the watchful eye of Nimal the manager. It is a short walk to the beach. Right out of the hotel then 1st right where there are many shops and cafes. There are two ATM machines directly opposite the hotel which is very convenient as Sri Lanka is in the main a cash culture, even hotels require payment by cash. The currency is also a closed currency so can not be obtain before arrival. There is always a tuktuk outside to take you anywhere you want within reason. He dropped us at the Galle fort and then came back to collect us 2 hours later for 1500lkr. He also gave a running commentary as we drove along. We enjoyed our stay at the Nooit Gedacht Heritage hotel and have booked to return in February 2024. There are monkeys, monitor lizards and a large number of exotic birds in the grounds which makes it a joy to just sit and watch the wildlife. Also be aware if you have an upper level room you will probably hear the monkeys on the roof at night either for warmth from the tiles or just transiting from tree to tree. Note the only downside is there are lots of mosquitoes both in the grounds and around the pool and dinning areas. Usually under the tables. Ensure you pack plenty of repellent and wear long trouser in the evenings.

One intriguing place to stay and the service is very good. Dutch colonial interior can impress, too. The hotel itself needs some further maintenance though, after quite some idle time in it’s operation. Has a large swimming pool, didn’t use as was under maintenance.

Extremely clean room. We loved the contemporary design. Everything looked really new when we were there. We stayed in the small room... some might find it a little tight.. but it was okay for us. Really nice breakfast spread. Only downer is that there was a little musty or damp smell in our room. Just a little whenever we entered. Other than that it was great.

We stumbled upon this hotel while searching for accommodation in the beautiful Unawatuna area for our group. Its prime location facing Galle-Matara road and its proximity to Welle-Dewalaya road in Unawatuna make it incredibly convenient for exploring all the nearby tourist attractions. As we entered through the main gates, the spaciousness of the place immediately caught our attention. One of the striking aspects of this hotel is its rich history dating back to the Dutch era, where it served as the residence of a Dutch governor and later passed down through generations of the same family. During the pre-reservation period, the staff were exceptionally helpful in understanding our needs and accommodating our custom requirements. We had the pleasure of staying for one night, during which they even arranged a delightful BBQ for us upon our request. The hotel boasts a range of essential amenities, including two swimming pools (one for kids), a bar, a restaurant area, and even an ayurvedic spa. The variety of room categories ensures there's an option to suit everyone's preferences. The rooms, though of average size, are comfortable and equipped with all the necessary items. Notably, the food was delicious, and we were pleased to learn that they grow organic produce on their own farm. Considering the excellent facilities provided, we were pleasantly surprised by the reasonable and affordable room rates. Moreover, the hotel's strategic location allows for a 10-minute walk to the stunning Unawatuna beach and a quick 10-minute ride to the historic Galle fort. Throughout our stay, the staff, especially Mr. Viraj, went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly, and they were incredibly friendly and accommodating. In conclusion, we highly recommend this hotel to both solo travelers and groups alike. Whether you're exploring the area's attractions or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, this place ticks all the right boxes.

This location was perfect for us and atmosphere is very good and food and staff are very cooperative, close to everything, but in a calm environment. Greenery was all around, no noise, just birds singing and monkeys fighting 😊 The staff was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was very tasty. The swimming pool was big and beautiful. We enjoyed our staying very much.

Manager behaviour is rude. Didn't listen carefully to what we requested. Forced us to wait while we were leaving unnecessarily. He needs to be more attentive and polite. Stay was pleasant. Property is nice.

Nice place. The rooms were clean. But the food was not satisfactory at all. Not a good place for the non meat eaters. They have a lot of stuff with chicken. Pool is good. Has a baby pool too. Rooms are ok. Clean. Had only 4 sachets of coffee so had to buy it from outside.

I really enjoyed my stay, went with a group of friends for a budget and this is way better than I expected considering the price hikes after covid and economic crisis. When we entered the hotel it gave a dated look and I was worried for a sec, but its actually that part of the hotel which is dated (old dutch resthouse). Our rooms, pool and the background scenery was constructed recently after refurbishing the dutch resthouse. Rooms were clean, had all the amenities; same with the bathroom and as well. All modern designed and constructed. The rooms did not have a telephone which I thought is a must to contact for room service, they also didn't have body lotion which most hotel do provide. They also don't have a beach view but its a very peaceful area, surrounded by nature. Their gardens are very well maintained. Since we booked B&B I can only vouch for the breakfast in this review. It was average, bread, some fruits, pancake (1), and a choice of omelets. Its not filling, its the bare minimum. You can order more food ala carte and get drinks from the bar, they do charge for corkage if you are in public but if you stay in the room they don't charge. Overall, I'm more than happy with my stay if you consider the price and the country situation. Its a very clean, beautiful, historic hotel which is very well maintained.

Ideal for traveling with kids. The garden is like an oasis. We had two interconnecting rooms. Very spacious and cleaned every day. Aircon and fan. Wi-Fi works. Friendly staff. Great pools (2!) From shallow to deeper water, warm. Towels available. Kids menu and good food although the fish was a bit dry. Nice curries and deserts. By tuctuc 15 minutes to Galle fort and 5 minutes (or a nice stroll) to Unawatuna beach with lots of restaurants, beautiful beach en rough waves.

Really love everything about this place. We went there for a night stay and booked triple and double standard room HB, but we got a upgrade to two standard rooms with the balcony (we were lucky I guess haha). It was worth the price. Really liked the experience. Pool was nice and clean, the environment also eye-catching with greenish surrounding and calm. Rooms are clean, so the bathroom, beds are comfy. Dinner and Breakfast were delicious. Liquor (a bar) also available. The manager was so friendly and so was the other staff member. Highly Recommended to everyone. Cheers to the team!

Beautiful hotel located in a green garden with palms and leafy trees. Very quiet place, rooms are far from the road. The main noisemakers are chipmunks jumping on the roofs and munching on your fruits if you accidentally left it outside ☺️ About 10 minutes walking to the beach. Once I had a dinner there and I enjoyed the food. The hotel staff is extremely polite and helpful. I didn’t expect my calls will be answered at 4am when I arrived. However the hotel manager Jude was waiting for me and escorted me to my room. He also helped me with my PCR to travel back to Dubai. Waiter Anuradhapura greeted us every morning for breakfast, and Sanjula was helpful not only with the meal choice, but also he helped me to decide which beach do I go first and how do I get there. Overall, very much recommended!

Overall, good. The rooms are a bit old and the bathroom is small, but after all it is a heritage building. Positive experience with the service.

Beautiful colonial building, beautiful garden. The staff are nice and helpful. European or Sri Lankan breakfast is pretty tasty. Coffee not the best though.
