A very beautiful and eye catching place where you can have a wide angle of spectacular view of sea waves . Crystal blue waters and sea breeze will calm up down. A better place to go on a hectic day or after a stressful week for have a relaxing day out. Before falling dusk in the evening and before 10.00 am in the morning is the best time to have a visit. Otherwise a straight and heavy beam of light will toast you . You also can have a swim right away from point Dondra, where there is a sandy beach. A right decision on a perfect destination, for a little family gathering or a personal journey.

Dondra Head Lighthouse is a beacon situated on Dondra Head, Dondra, the southernmost point in Sri Lanka and is Sri Lanka's tallest beacon, and furthermore one of the tallest in South East Asia. Dondra Head beacon is worked and kept up with by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. The beacon is close to the town of Dondra, and is around 6 km (3.7 mi) southeast of Matara. The name Dondra is an equivalent word for "Devi-Nuwara" in the nearby Sinhala language, "Devi" signifying "Divine beings" and "Nuwara" signifying "City". Dondra is thusly inferred to signify "City of the Gods".

This is the end point in southern Sri Lanka. This is a place you must visit. South corner. Yes, it's a really eye-catching place. It wasn't until I got to this place that I realized how much of a corner it would be. The road on the map is a bit difficult but can be heard from the locals.not parking facility.but you can park your vehicle near the road edges and then take a foot for the end.nice looking. If you want to take a great view ,you must here at after 5'o clock. You will surely like to watch the evening sunset scene again from the light house.

Visiting this place was one of my best decision. If you are going the gates to Light House open around 9/10 a.m and close around 6 p.m. (No tickets. You don't need tickets to enter the place) The surrounding areas have plenty of places to sit and chill. I personally like the backside beach which I used to sit and enjoy. If you are not good at swimming but still love to feel like a baywatch kinda person I guess this place will give you that chance. My reconsidering time to be here either early morning or evening. Because afternoon is too hot.

The southern most tip of sri lanka is a nice quiet place to visit but sadly was closed when I tried (Dec 16, 2021) due to corona policies. It seemed like a quick nice place for few pictures, try your luck by going to the beach by fisherman houses located next to the light house if you want a picture

Beautiful scenic place. Best time to go is in the evening when the sun sets. (If you want to get beautiful photos) Not crowded usually so good place to relax. Good biodiversity. Can take a safe sea bath at a closeby spot. I think now people need to get permission to climb up the lighthouse and take a great view.

Dondra Head offers a captivating experience centered around its beautiful old lighthouse. Designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglass and constructed by William Douglass of the Imperial Lighthouse Service in 1887, the lighthouse stands as a historical marvel. The exclusive access, requiring permission from the habromaster, adds an intriguing element to the visit. Situated amidst the southern sea, Dondra Head boasts the title of being the lowest point in Sri Lanka (දෙව්න්දර තුඩුව). The breathtaking view from this iconic location further enhances the visit, making it a must-see destination. Dondra Head's lighthouse not only stands as a testament to history but also offers a memorable and awe-inspiring vista of the southern seascape.

More than 100 years old, this lighthouse stands at the southern most top of Sri Lanka. It boasts of a mind blowing view of the ocean. The white brick lighthouse is ideal for instagrammers who want to take advantage of the rustic white backdrop. Don't forget to wear colourful clothes when visiting this!

We went there on a Saturday morning. Place was almost empty. Place needs some maintenance. There is a nice small beach beside the lighthouse if you want to have a bath. It is not possible to go up in the Lighthouse without prior approval from the Harbour master.

Dondra Head Lighthouse is a lighthouse located on Dondra Head, Dondra, the southernmost point in Sri Lanka and is Sri Lanka's tallest lighthouse, and also one of the tallest in South East Asia. Dondra Head lighthouse is operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. The lighthouse is near the village of Dondra, and is approximately 6 km southeast of Matara. The name Dondra is a synonym for "Devi-Nuwara" in the local Sinhala language, "Devi" meaning "Gods" and "Nuwara" meaning "City". Dondra is therefore derived to mean "City of the Gods". Dondra Head Lighthouse was designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglass, with construction, by William Douglass of the Imperial Lighthouse Service, commencing in November 1887.All the building materials including the bricks and steel were imported from England. The granite rock was supplied from quarries at Dalbeattie in Scotland and Penryn in Cornwall. The lighthouse was completed and commissioned in March 1890.The combined cost of erection of the lighthouse and the Barberyn Lighthouse was £30,000 and was paid for by dues collected at the Basses lighthouses.

This lighthouse is near matara and is at the southern most tip of Sri lanka. There was no guide and the lighthouse was shut. The main gate however to the lighthouse was open. Make sure you go around the lighthouse. Their are various puddles where one can enter in and sir at ease. Their is also a post office. Make sure you carry a card to post from there. There is a joint just outside lighthouse which can serve snacks and soft drinks.

Nice and romantic. The lighthouse dominates the Dondra beach. You have to climb many steps, but then enjoy commanding views. Dondra beach is very beautiful. Vast Indian Ocean seems endless. The next land on the south is Antarctic.

Located at the southern tip of Sri Lanka, it is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka as well as in South Asia. It was built in the year 1890 during the British rule. 49 meters high. Some say that the light can be seen here as far as 100 km. It is located in a very beautiful coastal environment. Therefore, tourists from home and abroad come to see this in abundance. The tower is white with yellow windows. Everyone who goes here should keep the surrounding environment clean. As this is controlled by the Navy, permission should be obtained to fly drones around.

Dondra Head is at the Southern tip of Sri Lanka near the small town of Dondra or ‘Devundara’. The Galle Lighthouse and a Vihara are located in the area. There was a temple to Vishnu with a gilded copper roof, destroyed by the Portuguese but the place still attracts pilgrims today to the Dondra Fair and Perahera, held in the month of Esala (July-August). It might interest you that Dondra Head was once the capital of the country. It was built in 1889 making it still the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka and was designed by Sir James Nicholas Douglass and constructed by William Douglass of the Imperial Lighthouse Service. Dondra Head was also at the epicentre of a beneficial sea route. Possibly fuelling inspiration for the 1955 movie, Dondra Head was instrumental in bringing about ‘Soldiers of Fortune: Pearls off Dondra Head’ directed by John English starring John Russel, Chick Chandler, Nancy Gates, Howard Negley, Christopher Dark, Lawrence Dobkin, George Keymas and Dale Van Stickel. The story is about Tim and Toubo who, upon learning of a rich pearl bed from a dying man, they decide to try their luck at pearl diving. The tower height of Dondra Head is 160m and the tower is a white octagonal brick tower and it is now used as an active aid to navigation. Its characteristic is a white flash every 5 seconds of a range of 28 nautical miles with a height focal plane of 153m. who knwon as Devinuwara the ‘City of Gods’ in Sinhala was vital for several reasons. The immense historical, geographical and religious importance makes it one of the more discerning places to visit in Sri Lanka.

🇱🇰 According to the geological data of Sri Lanka, this place is named "Dewundara Thuduwa" (the Southern Point of Sri Lanka). 🚙 The access road is in good condition. But heavy vehicles or big buses cannot reach the destination parking lot. 🌊 It has a beautiful beach with many beautiful rocks. Only one part of the beach is suitable for swimming. ⚓️ There is a large working lighthouse at this place. If you want to go up there and look around, you need to get special permission from the Galle Port Authority and Naval Southern Headquarters.

Absolutely stunning! My first time visiting the southern most tip of Sri Lanka and amazing to think that that is the last land mass until the south pole. The sea and the views are breathtaking, beyond describable. Definitely a bucket list item.

The southern end of Sri Lanka and a small post box is fixed on that place. Light house is magnificent but I couldn’t go inside. The blue beach surrounded the location is outstanding.

  • 2/5 Sudheera S. 1 year ago on Google
The tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka, located at the southern most point (Point Dendro) of the country. No visitor can enter the lighthouse tower and there's no information available as to the reasons. Presence of Navy could be seen. There are no facilities for visitors apart from a unsecured public parking and toilets. No tickets are required to enter the premises. The fundamentals benchmark to establish the height above mean sea level is located within the premises. There was an old postbox with the demarcation that it's the southern most point. But it's was gone (may be being repaired/replaced) when we visited! The whole premises is a classic example of ineffecincy in government management of these places of public interest and tourist attraction. Better parking (charged), charging for entrance, a restaurant, souvenir sales center and a guided tour with entrance to tower (charged), etc would result in satisfactory visitor experience and revenue to authorities.

The headland is home to the iconic Dondra Lighthouse, a majestic structure that stands tall against the backdrop of the azure Indian Ocean. South most point of Sri Lanka. There's a mark of south most point(a postbox), lighthouse, and a benchmark stone that used to measure the sea level. Photogenic area. Small parking available. There is no need to buy tickets. Need to get prior approval to enter into the lighthouse.

(Went on 18 June 2023, reviewed on 25 June 2023) This is the highlight of my trip towards the Down South. Whilst you would have to travel through a narrow road (i.e. Lighthouse road) to reach the destination, it is worth the drive as you will be able to view the endless ocean spanning in front of Sri Lanka’s southernmost point. I definitely recommend it as a place for both Sri Lankans and non-Sri Lankans who want to experience it, especially since there is just the Indian Ocean from Point Dondra to Antarctica (view on the map for evidence). Now, I feel like I want to go to Point Pedro (Sri Lanka’s northern most point) after experiencing the beauty at Point Dondra!

Dondra Lighthouse, also known as Point Dondra Lighthouse, is a historic lighthouse located in the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, in the town of Dondra, near Matara. The lighthouse was built by the British in the late 19th century and stands at a height of 160 feet (49 meters), making it one of the tallest lighthouses in South Asia. The lighthouse is an important navigational landmark for ships and boats traveling through the Indian Ocean, particularly those traveling along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The light is visible from up to 17 nautical miles (31 kilometers) and is still operational today. In addition to its historical and navigational significance, Dondra Lighthouse is also a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can climb up the lighthouse to the top, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and Indian Ocean. The lighthouse is open to visitors every day from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Point Dondra Head, located in the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, is a captivating destination known for its scenic beauty, historical significance, and a beautiful beach that lies adjacent to the iconic tower. Standing proudly as the country's southernmost point, this headland offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. However, it's important to note that the lighthouse's top light has been removed, which can be disappointing for some visitors. Visitors to Point Dondra Head are treated to a mesmerizing sight as the mighty waves crash against the rugged cliffs. The area's pristine beach, with its golden sands and clear blue waters, provides a perfect spot for a refreshing swim or a leisurely sunbathing session. The beach offers a tranquil escape and is an ideal place to unwind and soak up the sun. Aside from its natural splendor, Point Dondra Head holds cultural significance too. It is home to the historic Dondra Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya, a revered Hindu temple. The temple attracts devotees from far and wide, especially during religious festivals, adding a spiritual touch to the area's allure. While the removal of the top light from the tower may diminish its visual impact, the overall beauty of Point Dondra Head and its surroundings remain intact. The rugged coastline, stunning sunsets, and the opportunity to spot marine life, such as dolphins and whales, continue to captivate visitors. For those seeking a combination of natural wonders and cultural exploration, a visit to Point Dondra Head and its beach is a must. Whether you want to witness the power of the ocean, immerse yourself in cultural heritage, or simply enjoy a peaceful day by the beach, this coastal gem promises a memorable experience. -copied-

The southern most point in Srilanka or the sub-continent. Very beautiful and serene. The less crowded point compared to Point Pedro (northern-most point of Srilanka). It also has a lighthouse and and radar room for enabling directions. Though not many might know about this, this is a beautiful place. Access to this area is very minimal and the roads are small and parking is not available. Use a tuk-tuk though.
