Some of the best fish and chips I had in Ireland or Scotland during my vacation! The food came out quickly and was fresh and tasty. The person who took our order was also great. I mentioned my husband didn't like fish and she suggested he should try it with curry. My husband said he was fine without the curry but after we sat down she brought us over a small side of curry for free which she didn't have to do! She was right the fish was great with the curry, my husband really enjoyed the fish with the curry too! Can't recommend this place enough for fish and chips

Served very quickly, but the fish and chips were neither the best nor the worst I've eaten. The fish was well cooked and a good sized portion, but a little on the oily side. Chips were crisp and tender inside. If you're looking for a quick and not too pricey meal, you can't go wrong here. Atmosphere? Upscale fast food tourist.

The oysters are delicious! Really fresh! Fish and chips is ok. Fish soup was a great surprise. The ambience is quite nice with all the fishing decoration :)

Really nice authentic Irish food. It's an old place with plenty of fish to try out. The Cod and fries is what they recommend, and the Oysters are apparently fresh daily, but I didn't get that feeling. The Cod, IMO, lacked flavor. Not even salt. Simply fried as is, and call it a day. The fries were good. The Oysters were flavorful with lemon, but truly didn't taste like the ocean, or perhaps I'm not used to this type of Oyster? Either way, it's fairly priced and a good experience.

The cod fish is so fresh, and the chips are good too! I might be wrong but I find the ketchup taste little different here, and I liked it lol. Once you place order, they will serve you the food right away! Best fish&chips I had in Ireland ;)

This place came highly recommended for its fish and chips. I found the ordering to be a little confusing as it was not clear how much you were getting when ordering. That being said, the fish was fresh and the portions huge. From a flavor profile, it was nothing special. We had to pull bones out of our fish and it was alright. Glad we tried it but would pass on a repeat visit

Mc donaghs was always the go to place for fish and chips in galway. Reviewed it a few years ago on some other platform and felt the standard had dropped. Well glad to say went back this week and had a portion of fish. Excellent food. Batter perfect, fish cooked perfectly, tartar sauce was excellent.

Very crispy and fresh fried cod with chips. The service was quick, but they messed up the order. The fish soup had chunky bites of salmon, cod and other fish.

We sat on the restaurant side just before the Q started. The server was pleasant and provided a superb suggestion. We shared the seafood platter and monkfish. Both dishes were delicious. Make sure you save the bread on the seafood platter to sop up the garlic lemon butter at the bottom of the platter. Very tasty and will stop by again.

Awesome experience. Pick the fish - I chose Salmon and it was made into the most incredible fish and chips I’ve had during this first week in Ireland! Fresh and very tasty!! You can’t beat the service and friendly atmosphere. Very prompt and efficient and reasonably priced as well!! Also clean bathrooms!! Always a plus. Loved the staff!!

Came here for dinner, got the cod, scampi and chips with a few sides. The fish is a thick piece and cooked perfectly. The fish was moist and flaky, with a crunchy batter. Son loved the shrimp. Staff were friendly and service was prompt. Very busy and they have indoor seating but you might have to wait to grab a table. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was considered by locals as the best place for fish and chips in Galway.

Decent cod fish. Not the best ones chips, kind of floppy. In coleslaw too much of mayo. Service could be better.

It was so busy during my visit so we had to share the table with others. But the food was great and quick. They were so friendly as well, helping us to get our table. Highly recommended!

I had the fish and chips. The fish was fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The chips were a bit dry, but the malt vinegar fixed that. The service was pleasant and efficient. No complaints whatsoever. I would recommend.

We really enjoyed the fish and chips dish! The only problem in this restaurant is that you get in line and once you order and you get your food you have to try to find somewhere to sit, which means when it gets crowded you might stay without a table with your food in your hands 😮‍💨

MCDonagh’s is a popular fish and chips restaurant in Galway. You walk in, order your fish of choice to be fried (Cod, Salmon, Whitting, etc.) at the counter and seat yourself. We were a family of four and knew what each person in our party wanted. We were next in line to order when our daughter sat at a table. She was scolded by the employee for sitting at a table before ordering. She explained and signaled (by pointing) that her family was currently ordering. The worker continued her condemnation until we arrived at the table. Our fish was fried well: super crispy! However, there was no use of seasoning. The fish was bland and inedible without the garlic sauce. The chips were the worst chips we had while in Ireland. They were soft, mushy and also without seasoning. The ambiance was festive, causal, and filled with Irish charm. Personally, we wouldn’t go back again and it’s hard to recommend.

Well worth the price and experience! A GIANT serving of whiting fish for about €8.10 ($8.57 USD), and great quality. Highly, highly recommend. The fish was about 21.5 cm (8½ inches) long. I'm telling ya, the hand in the photo is that of a small (human) bear paw. Not only was the serving hearty, but it was also ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! Also, the quaint and "diner" atmosphere is pretty dang cool.

(Translated by Google) Moderate cost for huge portions! Really good fish, despite a perhaps too exaggerated breading, almost nauseating after a while. Great selection of sauces. I recommend sharing the small portion of chips with someone, as they put too many, too many. P.s. Eating inside the restaurant is recommended or the birds in the surroundings (pigeons, crows, seagulls) steal your fish!

Amazing fish and chips and for a great price. Too bad they ran out of oysters. Downside is they charge for tartar sauce otherwise would be 5stars.

Too many places buy in prebattered & frozen fish. Not McDonald's real freshly made fish & chips. Highly recommended not difficult to see why this chipper is a Galway institution.

Nice fish&chips while sitting and watching the time pass bye outside. Take your time.. My choice was the right one. Very good quality (no oily sponges with fat ugly fries) The kitchen team is Top and the "salle" service is welcoming and helpfull. Reason enough to comme back. You have to show your covid vaccine passport BUT ....HOLY PANCAKE.....it's open. Life comes back exept for a few fishes.

Autumn 2019, tried a fish soup and a dish of fish and chips. Liked the soup better. The taste of their oil on the chips, I guess was too much and a bit strange.

Came here because of the reviews and was so psyched to eat some really great fried cod before on fly out tomorrow, but frankly, was not in love at all with the fish, not worth the fried onions. That lacked taste , have had much better in other places.

Good for Fish and Chips. Various choices, and good portion of food at reasonably price. Despite the fish is slightly oily, otherwise it is crispy and delicious. Everything is charged individually such as Tartar sauce (70cents) & fries.. it’s definitely worth the visit for a quick dinner.

Smoked fish and chips! For the win. This place has won countless awards for its fish and chips and it's well deserved! Fast friendly service that doesn't sacrifice quality. If you're in Galway, you must try their smoked fish and chips.

This is such a cute little place and also it has a walk up order process of a variety of different seafood items. I got the cod fish and chips. Very good. The breading wasn't to thick which I like. The cod itself was thick. Fast service friendly staff

Enjoyed a nice plate of Cod Fish and Chips, and waited about 15 minutes in line for it but the food was immediately ready once at the counter. Seating can be filled, but tables will become available as you wait in line. The fried cod was generous in portion and tasted mild, with a good texture. The chips were very crispy and seasoned really well. The garlic sauce was very crisp in garlic flavor and cut the fattiness of the meal. This was a really enjoyable meal in Galway!

Great food as always, always has been, I found out today too just how much the Manager Padraig understands and values his customers and just how sincere and genuine the man is about Quality Customer Service and the little things. This is why McDonaghs is a Galway institution and always will be.

Every time we visit Galway city, we always go to McDonagh's. They always have wonderful fresh Cod, and the chips are beautiful. They have a wonderful selection of fresh fish on the menu. Great Service, and nice staff.

Fast and virtuous service. Solid food, fresh fish. Not going to compare its flavors to a cutting edge molecular gastronomy place, but decent flavors for this part of the world. The bruschetta was great as was the seafood risotto. The fish and chips were standard, crispy and fried. They have a kids menu and coloring placemats and crayons.

  • 5/5 J T. 4 years ago on Google
Great fish and chips. Tried the cod and hake, you can choose your own fish from the list above the counter. Cod is firm and flaky, hake is smooth. Both excellent! Chowder is flavourful, chock full of fish and seafood.

Worst service that I ever had in Ireland. Feels like the people working just want to get ride of you. The fish taste like nothing, no salt, no nothing. Wish I had chosen a different place to experience Galway culinary.

Truly the greatest fish and chips in Ireland. I've eaten many a cod although this was the freshest, tastiest and most delicious I've had in a long time; probably caught that day. Inexpensive food and some friendly staff that made me laugh. Will surely return.

HOW CAN YOU GIVE A HIGH RATE TO A SO DISGUSTING PLACE. If I could I'would give 0. Fried fish with so much oil on the plate. Disgusting fries. I think they have changed the oil a few weeks ago. NEVER AGAIN.

The oysters were really gritty (sandy? bits of shell?) and I spotted a small worm alive and moving on the back of the shell. I really wish I took a picture of the worm… my other family members had fish and chips and they were excellent. I’m giving one star because although I have had raw oysters many times this experience almost put me off of them. So I can recommend the fish and chips but stay away from the oysters. Based on other reviews I may have just been unlucky? Strange experience.
