This is the place which has all the great stone calving and they are nicely reserved. It is amazing to observe how skilfull they have been on these early days. The most iconic artifact is the lovers statue, which according to the general view of public is a calving of great two lovers, price saliya and his low cast lover Ashokamala for whome he has given up on his throne. This is a historical love story of Sri Lanka

The old British colonial administration building has recently been renovated and has an interesting collection of artwork, carvings and everyday items from Anuradhapura and other historic sites around Sri Lanka. Exhibits include a restored relic chamber, found during the excavation of the Kantaka Chetiya dagoba at nearby Mihintale, and a large-scale model of Thuparama Dagoba’s vatadage (circular relic house) as it might have been if a wooden roof had existed.

rumuniya is a Buddhist temple located in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is known for its historical and religious significance, as well as its beautiful rock carvings and sculptures. Here's a brief history of Isurumuniya: Origins and Construction: Isurumuniya is believed to have been built during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa (307 BC - 267 BC) or King Kasyapa I (473-491 AD). The temple was initially known as "Isirigama Viharaya," and its name evolved over time to Isurumuniya. Location: Isurumuniya is situated near the Tisawewa (Tissa Tank) in Anuradhapura Significance: The temple is renowned for its rock carvings, sculptures, and its tranquil setting. It is a place of worship and meditation for Buddhists. The rock carvings at Isurumuniya depict various scenes, including the famous "Isurumuni Lovers." This carving shows a couple in an embrace, believed to represent a royal couple or an episode from local folklore. Isurumuni Lovers: The most famous rock carving at Isurumuniya is that of a couple in an affectionate pose. The identity of the couple is uncertain, and various legends surround this carving. Some believe it represents the doomed love affair between a royal prince and a commoner's daughter. Architectural Features: Isurumuniya features a traditional Buddhist architectural style, with a stupa, image houses, and other structures. The temple complex includes a vihara (monastery), which has been a center for Buddhist meditation and worship over the centuries. Cultural and Historical Importance: Isurumuniya is an important site for both historians and Buddhists, offering insights into the ancient history and culture of Sri Lanka. The temple has witnessed the ebb and flow of different dynasties and kingdoms that ruled over Anuradhapura. Restoration and Preservation: Like many ancient sites in Sri Lanka, Isurumuniya has undergone restoration and preservation efforts to protect its structures and carvings. Visitors to Anuradhapura often include Isurumuniya as part of their itinerary to explore the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region. The serene atmosphere and historical significance make it a noteworthy site for those interested in Sri Lanka's ancient past.

Isurumuniya Archaeological Museum is a site museum located in Isurumuniya, Sri Lanka. It was established in Isurumuni vihara in 1984. The museum is maintained by Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka. The museum exhibits some valuable pieces of sculptures found in vihara premises. The most famed sculpture amongst them is the Gupta styled carving of Isurumuni lovers which belongs to the 5th century. It is believed to have been found from the royal pleasure garden. The other significant stone sculptures in the museum are the royal court (or the royal family), the Kavata sculptures, Kuvera Triod, Sculptures of Kinnaras and figures of dwarves. many ancient stuff to visit.

The museum houses the famous Isurumuniya Lovers. Tourist will need to buy a ticket to enter the temple/museum premises as the Anuradhapura sacred city ticket does not cover the Isurumuniya temple. Not much information is presented at the museum and it will be worth while to get a registered tour guide for the visit. Inquire about tour guides at the ticket counter.

Anuradhapura Archaeological Museum is one of the archaeological museums of Sri Lanka. It is situated in the old kachcheri building, between the Brazon palace and Ruwanwelisaya. The museum was established in 1947 under the prime effort of Dr. Senarath Paranavithana.

The museum building is currently being renovated. There are stone antiquities in the grounds that you can see, but with very little context. But you can buy the US$25 tickets for Anuradhapura at the gate.

  • 1/5 Fabio S. 4 years ago on Google
Do not buy the tickets here! It is a tourist scam! We bought the horrendously overpriced tickets for all the sites in anuradhapura here but actually never needed it as all of the sites are actually free! The museum itself is extremely poorly maintained with people burning plastic on the premises. Avoid

(Translated by Google) The museum at the temple depicting the life of one of the rulers who ruled these areas 300 years BC, honestly the exhibits gathered here make a really big impression where they show that Europe is not the navel of the world and before European civilizations there lived other which were much more developed in those times if it seems to us worth to see (Original) Muzeum przy świątynne przedstawiające życie jednego z władców który władał tymi terenami 300 lat przed naszą erą powiem szczerze zgromadzone tutaj eksponaty robią naprawdę duże wrażenie gdzie pokazują że Europa to wcale nie jest pępek świata i przed cywilizacjami europejskimi żyły inne które były o wiele bardziej rozwinięte w tamtych czasach jeżeli nam się wydaje warto wejść zobaczyć
