Came to see Patrick Van Caeckenbergh’s whimsical, magical and fantasy creations based on his encyclopedic knowledge of history, culture, traditions and the understanding of the sciences, very impressed.

Wonderful museum, with significant focus on late medieval and renaissance biblical paintings. Some of the more recent era works (paintings and statues) are absolutely stunning, possibly up there with the best I’ve ever seen.

Overall very happy with my visit; spent about 1.5 hours there. Not crowded at all on the Sunday, when I arrived about 12:30. Only negative is the HASSLE the reception gave me over my press business card, claiming it was invalid bc it didn’t have my picture and wasn’t laminated in plastic. Get a clue lady, not every press organisation does that. She reluctantly let me in for free as per press conditions. On the plus side, wonderful art collection especially of Gothic art. Everything is translated into English and French. Museum layout is confusing. Photos allowed inside except at the Van Eyck panels under restoration.

Amazing collection! SMAK (the city contemporary art museum) used to be in the same building here so it seems they retain some of the great paintings here. Magritte, Tytgat, Ensor... And more that I'd thought I would find in SMAK are actually here. Initially wasn't very keen on going because I thought it'd be strictly limited to very old paintings, but glad I was wrong!! With that said, to me, this is the best museum in Gent.

Lovely museum. I especially appreciated the use of colours on the walls. Makes the art really pop and whatever designer did that should be very proud!

Very good at gallery which has more rooms than first meets the eye. Expect to spend a decent couple of hours here. Paintings range from the 1400s to the 20th century and there's an interesting sculpture section.

Very good. Some old masters, modern, surrealism & weird. Like all art museums not enough time to look at all fully if just visiting the city. Highly recommend.

Great experience, interesting presentation of the collections, in an almost treasure hunt like circuit. Enjoy getting there by walking in the park, grab a coffee on your way out. Kids friendly. All in all, makes for a well spent afternoon

Spontaneous museum trip, was wonderful! Lots of variety and not too crowded on a weekday (Wednesday afternoon), Entrance was €3 (ages -26) fun little photo booth where you can take pictures for 3€ and got a card of my favourite painting there for 1€ .

Nice painting and sculpture museum from middle ages to more recent many times linked to the city of Ghent. The contemporary art museum is just across the road. They regularly change a part of the museum - it was Theodoor Rombouts until 23/4/23 when I visited. Good audio guide

Stunning collection of works from different eras. I especially loved the James Ensor paintings. They have Rubens and Bosch, too. There were a few rooms dedicated to children’s art as well, which proves Ghent is focused on the future art world, too. Highly recommend you visit.

Small and special. Wi-Fi doesn’t work well but no matter because the curator boards are well done.

Excellent art museum. Lots of variety of works, so there will be something for pretty much everyone. Some parts were closed but they told us ahead of time and it was a pretty big museum so didn’t feel like we were cut short at all.

Bit out of the city centre but in a lovely park. Large collection of art ranging from the Flemish primitive to realist and surrealist masterpieces. Lovely audio guide. The building is spacious and easy to get lost in. The tour is about 2 hours long.

The building itself is magnificent and the permanent collection is outstanding. Located at the other end of town, you might be tempted to give this museum a miss but you'll regret it of you do. If for no other reason than you getting to see the conservators working on the restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece in real time - an enormous privilege

I gave this museum a try with its great reviews. I am not disappointed! The permanent collections are divided into digestible themes that put the artworks into context. I am not particularly interested in the arts and I learned quite a few things from this museum.

Very impressive selection of traditional art in a wide range of styles. Personally, I loved taking my time to look at the details in the background of paintings to find interesting and sometimes amusing scenes/illustrations.

Beautiful art museum with many Belgian artists Entrance for adults below 25 was only 2,5€ Some of the museum is undergoing construction right now but there was still much to see

Wanted to see Bosch here, but one of the two paintings was traveling. The other was worth the visit. Then- BIG surprise- this is where the “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” is being restored and you can watch!!

We had a wonderful 2.5 hours last week here. I really love that the museum features so many local artists but also offers international artwork – I was so delighted to see one of Anders Zorn's most famous works right here. Everyone was very nice, it wasn't too crowded & for the price of your tickets you can also leave your stuff in the locker room which was very helpful and there are also audio guides for you to take, and the descriptions of paintings are also in English, so it was even cooler because we got to understand everything. 😊

Beatiful art museum in Gent. Well organised and displayed in the many rooms in the museum. Bar/coffeeshop service could be improved. Waiter was kind of rude today, as he was too busy.

  • 3/5 Eleni K. 10 months ago on Google
Interesting museum, but a bit confusing the layout and not having automated doors between some of the rooms; touch-free is better. The description for each room was not very clear as to the movements the works represented in each room. Staff was not very polite when communicating information. Great location for tourists, close to the train station.

Jan Van Eyck expo was REALLY amazing! Well organised and superb artwork with excellent audio guide. Very interesting! Thank you for the opportunity to see these masterpieces.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, is situated at the East side of the Citadelpark. The museum holds a large permanent collection of art from the Middle Ages until the mid 20th century. The collection focuses on Flemish Art but also has several European- especially French- paintings. My favorite paintings are Hieronymus Bosch - St. Jerome at Prayer Hieronymus Bosch - Christ Carrying the Cross Pieter Brueghel the Younger - Wedding Dance in the Open Air Fernand Khnopff - Incense René Magritte - Perspective II, Manet's Balcony

  • 5/5 Bart T. 4 years ago on Google
The Jan Van Eyck exhibition with guided tour was so stunning. The organisational staff guides and helps visitors flawlessly. With a guide you get that extra information which adds to the great artwork itself. Definitely worth visiting!

  • 4/5 Nikolas B. 5 years ago on Google
Very nice museum where paintings of great Flemish artists are exhibited. Apart from the works of the renaissance era, when flemish art was at its bests, you can also see works by artists from other periods. Some of them are really interesting. The entry to the museum is free with the Ghent city card.

Great collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings in chronological order. Great explanation of each era and the evolution of painting techniques and themes.

The staff in the museum were rude. Overly formal and rude when giving instructions. The museum itself is full of oil paintings if that’s your thing. Personally, I recommend walking over the road to the SMAK museum instead, lots more friendlier, cooler and more polite people work there. The style of art is really unique at SMAK too. Overall, I would avoid this museum due to the rudeness of the staff, it ruined the experience for me.

The space is beautiful and the exhibition of the Gent altarpiece being restored was really fantastic. Such a great idea. Only four stars though, specifically due to the ground floor security guard. What a dreadful presence! He spent the whole time marching around, looking for 'trouble' and appeared to be on the verge of having a stress-induced stroke. He really needs to rein it in when there's nothing to police because his general attitude ruins the enjoyment of the space.

A true gem in Ghent. After visiting this museum my girlfriend and I decided to buy a museum pass so we could visit the museum as often as we would like. And of course to explore the rest of Belgium’s top musea.

  • 5/5 Chiquita M. 6 months ago on Google
Nice museum with interesting exhibits which is well worth a visit. The museum shop sells beautiful handpainted lamps by a young artist from Ghent. For the designs painted on these lamps, she took inspiration from the mosaics around the museum entry.

It has some great paintings. The best of the collection was locked behind a door this week for a private, press exhibition. That's all well and good but when the art you've come half way over Europe to see is closed, I have an issue with that. They could have left it open during the day, a very poor show for a privileged few. This totally goes against what a public gallery stands for.

Amazing place! Completely recommended. You can find a lot of different art pieces by important artist specially from Belgium and The Netherlands.

Staff were friendly! But the art wasn’t to my taste! Some of the older more classical parts where okay but the more modern installations weren’t very good! The best part was the draw your own kids section!

Absolutely overpriced and i do not regard most of the artwork on display here as true art. Only 2 levels make up this museum. The staff on the other hand was extremely friendly and helpful! 10/10 for them!

There are many museums in Ghent, some of which can be easily missed. This one is definitely NOT one of them. It contains a rich and varied collection of works of art, including pictures of Pieter II Brueghel and Jheronimus Bosch. Just a must visit when you are in Ghent!

Museum voor Schone Kunsten is my top favorite museum in Belgium. My experience here was even better then The Royal Museums of Fine Arts - Brussels museum that is my second favorite museum in Belgium. The building looks recently renovated and the background colors of the walls enhance the whole experience of admiring the masterpieces exposed. The collection includes Old Masters such as Jheronimus Bosch, Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck hang alongside impressionists, surrealists and modernists such as James Ensor, Auguste Rodin, Emile Claus, René Magritte and George Minne. If you enjoy art, a visit to Museum voor Schone Kunsten is a must.

Museum voor Schone Kunsten (MSK) is a fine arts museum located at Citadel Park in Ghent, just across from Stedelijk Museum voor Acktuele Kunst (SMAK). Opening Hours are 10-6pm daily and entry fee is €8 per person. MSK was established in 1897 and has occupied its present building since 1900. The permanent collection focuses on works from the medieval period to the mid 20th century, offering visitors chance to see Flemish masterpieces by Jan Van Eyck, Rogier Van Der Weyden, Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Brueghel II as well as Dutch Golden Age works by Anthony Van Dyke, Pieter Paul Ruebens, Jacob Jordeans amongst other Netherlandish artists. Overall, the Museum of Fine Art in Ghent provides a nice opportunity to see quite a few historic artworks and to see masterpieces by important Old Masters.

Collection is beautiful and well thought out. Layout of the museum isn't great and wheelchair/buggy accessibility is abismal, they prefer you don't come if you can't use stairs.
